Why Camry keys vary so much by year
A 2001 Camry and a 2025 Camry share a badge and almost nothing at the ignition. Toyota moved from a plain chip key to remote-head keys, then flip keys, and finally a push-button smart key. Each one needs different parts and different programming. The year-by-year table on this page lists the key type and chip for every model year from 2000 through 2026, and the text here explains what that means when a key is lost, broken, or dead.
One honest caveat: in several Camry years the sources we rely on disagree. Chip catalogs split on 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2014, and the 2000 and 2001 cars carry their own question about whether every trim had an immobilizer. Where that is the case we say so, and we confirm the exact setup by VIN or by the stamp on your key before cutting or programming anything. If you want the wider brand picture, our Toyota key replacement page covers it.
What do 2000 to 2011 Camry owners need?
The 2000 and 2001 cars (XV20, 4C chip) are Toyota's first Camry immobilizer era. The data conflicts here: some sources say the immobilizer was not standard on every US trim, so a base car may use a plain mechanical key. If yours has a chip, a hardware-store copy will turn the lock but will not start the car. We check the key and the VIN first.
The 2002 to 2006 cars (XV30) start on the 4C chip, though some catalogs mark the transponder as optional equipment that year. 2003 and 2004 are the real puzzle: transpondery.com and JMA list the 4C chip through 2004, while several Ilco-aligned catalogs list the 4D-67 'dot' key (TOY44D) from 2003. We do not guess between them. The 4D-67 is verified for 2005 and 2006.
The 2007 to 2010 Camrys (XV40) use remote-head keys with the verified 4D-67 chip, and the standard car has a twist ignition. An optional push-button smart-key system with the HYQ14AAB fob was offered on some trims and hybrids, so we check which one you have. 2011 is another conflict year: some catalogs continue the 4D-67 chip, others show the 80-bit G chip starting then, so the key stamp or VIN decides.
What do 2012 to 2026 Camry owners need?
Regular-ignition 2012 and 2013 cars use the G chip (4D-72, 80-bit) in a remote-head key. 2014 is a boundary year with a documented mid-year production split: Ilco guidance says first-half cars use the G chip (TOY44G) and later cars the 128-bit H chip (TOY44H), while transpondery.com lists H from 2014. The letter stamped on the blade, or the build date, settles it. Regular-ignition 2015 to 2017 cars use the 128-bit H chip. Smart-key trims in these XV50 years use the HYQ14FBA fob on Toyota's 128-bit 8A smart system.
From 2018 to 2024 (XV70), base trims use an H-chip flip key (HYQ12BFB) with a twist ignition, while XLE, XSE and option-package cars use the HYQ14FBC smart fob (8A-A9 system) with push-button start. 2023 spec tables confirm the LE and SE kept the twist ignition. For 2024, some buyer guides say push-button start became standard on every trim, but dealer listings show it bundled as an optional package on LE and SE. Both setups exist, so we confirm by window sticker or VIN.
The 2025 and 2026 Camry (XV80) is hybrid-only, with push-button start on every trim and an NXP Hitag-AES '4A' smart key. Hands-free proximity entry is standard only on upper trims. This is the least settled territory, and our data marks programming for these years as unverified. More on that below.

Call (213) 577-1366Duplicate a Camry key or replace it after all keys are lost?
Copying from a working key is the easier job in every era, and the data lists the original key as needed for duplication. Cutting a spare before you lose the last key is usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job. When every key is gone, the answer depends on the era:
- 2000 and 2001: possible, but on 1998 to 2001 cars it can require an ECU reflash or removal rather than a simple OBD reset. We confirm by VIN before quoting.
- 2002 to 2014: possible through the OBD port according to our data. In the 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2014 conflict years we identify the chip first.
- 2015 to 2017: H-chip bladed keys have a documented aftermarket OBD procedure for all-keys-lost.
- 2018 and 2019 smart-key cars: may require Toyota security pass-codes or credentialed access, depending on the tool. We confirm per job.
- 2020 to 2024 smart-key cars: US jobs generally require Toyota server codes with locksmith-credentialed access. Adding a key when you still have a working fob is less restricted.
- 2025 and 2026: our data does not confirm an all-keys-lost method. It may need Toyota server access, specialist bench work, or dealer service.
Is programming a Camry key an OBD job or a dealer job?
For Camrys through 2024, our data lists OBD programming. That means we connect to the diagnostic port in the car instead of sending you to a service department, which is why a mobile van can handle most Camry key jobs right where the car sits.
The newest cars deserve plain talk. For 2025 and 2026, the programming method is unknown in our data, and aftermarket support for the 4A smart key is still maturing. Guides for all-keys-lost on that key are only beginning to appear. We confirm current tool coverage before quoting, and if a job turns out to be dealer-only we tell you so instead of starting something that cannot be finished.
On 2020 and newer smart-key cars, the access requirement for all-keys-lost is a manufacturer security gate, and it changes how the job is done. It is not something a locksmith can skip.
What affects the cost of a Camry key replacement?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because one model name covers very different jobs. These are the things that move the cost:
- Key type: a transponder key, a remote-head key, a flip key and a smart fob are different parts.
- Chip and generation: the right chip has to match the car, which is why we verify the conflict years first.
- Duplicate or all keys lost: copying from a working key is usually the lighter-cost option.
- Extra work: an ECU reflash on the earliest cars, or server-code access on 2020 and newer smart-key cars, adds steps.
- Condition of the old key: a worn blade or cracked shell may mean replacing the whole key rather than repairing it.
- Where and when: whether we come to you with a van or you visit our Westwood storefront, and what hour you need us.

Call (213) 577-1366What goes wrong with Camry keys?
The data points to different failures in different eras:
- 2000 to 2006: worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars, worn key blades that stop turning the lock, and non-transponder copies that will not start the car.
- 2007 to 2017: cracked remote-head shells, worn buttons and remote battery failure. The 2007 to 2011 cars also show worn ignition wafers, and 2012 to 2017 adds non-transponder copies that will not start the car.
- 2018 to 2024: broken flip-key hinges, worn shells, fob battery failure, and a 'key not detected' message on smart-key trims when the fob battery runs down.
- 2025 and 2026: fob battery failure, water-damaged fobs, and lost-fob replacement that costs more than an older bladed key.
- Try a fresh battery first if the fob is dead or the car says the key is not detected.
- If the shell is cracked or the hinge has failed, bring the key in. Sometimes the electronics are fine and only the housing needs replacing.
- If the key will not start the car at all, stop and call us before trying more copies.
When should you call us instead of the dealer?
Call us when you have lost your only key, snapped one in the lock, want a spare, or a fob has stopped working on a Camry from 2000 through 2024. We come to the car with a mobile van, or you can visit our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (213) 577-1366, and you can also reach us through our contact page.
The dealer may be the right call for some 2025 and 2026 jobs, especially all-keys-lost, where our data says dealer service could be needed. We will tell you that on the phone rather than let you wait on a job we cannot finish.
Whoever you call, ask for their BSIS LCO license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and any legitimate company will give you the number without hesitation.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Camry key if I lost every key?
Often yes, but it depends on the year. Our data shows it is possible on 2000 to 2024 cars, with extra steps on 2000 and 2001 cars and on smart-key cars from 2018 on. For 2025 and 2026 it is unconfirmed. We confirm by VIN before quoting.
How do I know which chip my Camry key has?
Check the stamp on the key blade, such as a G or H on a 2014 car, or give us the VIN. Catalogs disagree on 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2014, so we verify the chip in those years before cutting.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Camry?
If your car has an immobilizer chip, no. A non-transponder copy may turn the lock but will not start the engine. That problem appears in our data for 2000 to 2006 and 2012 to 2017 cars.
My Camry says the key is not detected. Do I need a new fob?
Often it is a dead fob battery, which is a listed problem on smart-key trims. Try a fresh battery first. Every Camry in our data also has a mechanical backup key. If the message persists, call us.
Does every 2024 Camry have push-button start?
Not necessarily. Some buyer guides say so, but dealer listings show Smart Key with push-button start as an optional package on LE and SE, with a twist-ignition flip key otherwise. We confirm per vehicle from the window sticker or VIN.
Is a 2025 or 2026 Camry key a dealer-only job?
Not always, but we will not pretend it is settled. The 4A smart key is new, and aftermarket support is still maturing. Programming may need Toyota server access, specialist bench work, or dealer service. We confirm current tool coverage first and tell you honestly.
Can you come to me for a Camry key?
Yes. We run mobile vans and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and the phone is answered around the clock at (213) 577-1366. Tell us the year and where the car is.
How much does a Camry key cost?
It depends on the key type, the chip, whether you have a working key to copy, and any extra steps like ECU work or server access. Give us the year and the situation, and we will explain what drives the cost for your car.
