2000 Toyota Camry key replacement

A 2000 Toyota Camry normally uses a transponder key with a 4C chip, so a plain hardware-store copy will not start the car. We cut and program replacements, including all-keys-lost, and confirm your trim by VIN first. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour.

The 2000–2004 Camry uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota Camry key guide.

Sources conflict on whether the immobilizer was standard on every US trim this year — some base cars may use a plain mechanical key — and all-keys-lost on 1998-2001 cars can require ECU reflash/removal rather than a simple OBD reset; we confirm by VIN before quoting.

What kind of key does a 2000 Camry use?

Most 2000 Camrys use a transponder key. There is a small chip sealed inside the plastic head, and in this year it belongs to the 4C family. That chip talks to the immobilizer in the car. If the car does not recognize the chip, the engine will not run, even when the metal blade turns the ignition without trouble.

This is a traditional blade key, not push-to-start. There is no fob to carry and no start button. The key also has a mechanical side, so the blade works the door and ignition locks the old-fashioned way. What matters is the chip.

For you as the owner, that means a few practical things:

  • A copy cut at a hardware store will fit the lock but will not start the car, because it has no programmed chip.
  • A replacement needs two jobs: cutting the blade correctly and programming the chip to your car.
  • Programming on this year is done through the car's OBD port, and it does not require the NASTF secure data registry that some newer models do.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

If you still have a working key, making a duplicate is the simpler and usually more economical route. On this setup the original key needs to be present, because we cut the blade from it and program the new chip while the car can still recognize the existing key. Do not wait until the last key fails if you can avoid it.

If every key is gone, replacement is still possible. We can make a key from the car itself, cutting the blade from the lock and programming a new chip. But a lost-key job takes more work than a duplicate, and on cars from this era it is not always a simple OBD reset. Sources we rely on say that on 1998 to 2001 Toyotas, an all-keys-lost situation can sometimes call for working on the engine computer (ECU), such as a reflash or removal, rather than a quick programming session. We would rather tell you that up front than surprise you partway through.

If you are choosing between the two, a spare made now avoids the harder job later. See our overview of Toyota Camry key services for how other model years compare.

How we handle a 2000 Camry key, step by step

Whether you call from a driveway or come to the Westwood storefront, the order of work is the same.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you have any working key.
  2. We ask for the VIN, because it tells us which version of the car we are dealing with.
  3. We confirm the key type and whether this car has the immobilizer setup we expect.
  4. For a duplicate, we cut the blade from your original. For all keys lost, we cut from the lock and plan for the harder programming path.
  5. We program the chip through the OBD port, then test the key in the door, the ignition, and a full engine start.
  6. We test every key you hand over, including old ones, so you know which still work.

What affects the price of a 2000 Camry key?

We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the real cost depends on the situation. The factors that move it are fairly short:

  • Duplicate versus all keys lost. A duplicate from a working original is usually the lighter-cost path.
  • Whether the car needs only OBD programming or also ECU work, which is more involved.
  • The condition of the ignition. Worn wafers can make a new key stick or fail, and that may need repair too.
  • Where the car is. A mobile van visit to your location is a different job from you coming to the storefront.
  • How many keys you want made in the same visit. A second key is usually easier to add while we are already set up.
  • Whether the car is a base trim that may use a plain mechanical key, which we explain below.

One thing we confirm by VIN before quoting

Our sources conflict on whether the immobilizer was standard on every US trim in 2000. Some base cars may use a plain mechanical key with no chip. We do not guess. If you give us the VIN, or let us look at your key and car, we can say which setup you have before any work begins.

Common problems on this year include worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars, and a worn key blade that no longer turns the lock. If your key has become hard to turn, bring it up when you call. A new cut key may solve it, or the ignition may need attention.

Wilshire Lock & Key has served Los Angeles since 1987 from a Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, with mobile vans. You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David oversees the work. Frequently asked questions

Does a 2000 Toyota Camry have a transponder key?

Most do, using a 4C chip. Sources conflict on whether every US trim had the immobilizer, so some base cars may use a plain mechanical key. We confirm by VIN before we quote.

Can a hardware store copy start my 2000 Camry?

If your car has the immobilizer, no. A plain copy may fit the lock, but without a programmed chip the engine will not start.

Do you need my original key to make a duplicate?

Yes. On this setup the original key needs to be present for a duplicate. If you have lost every key, that is an all-keys-lost job, which we can also do.

Can you make a key if I lost all my keys?

Yes, it is possible. We cut a key from the car and program the chip. On 1998 to 2001 cars it can require ECU work instead of a simple OBD reset, and we check that by VIN.

Is a dealer visit required for a 2000 Camry key?

Based on the data we have, no. Programming is done through the OBD port and does not need NASTF registry access, so we can handle it ourselves.

My Camry key is hard to turn. Is the key or the ignition worn?

Either one. A worn blade can stop turning the lock, and worn ignition wafers are common on high-mileage cars. We look at both before suggesting a fix.

Can you come to me, or do I need to visit the shop?

Both work. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and we will sort out which makes sense.

We cover all these cities
