What do Hyundai owners in Valencia usually need?

Valencia is a master-planned community, built out in named villages linked by paseo walkways, and the Hyundai key calls we get follow the way people live here. Some are planned: a spare before a road trip, a second fob after one has gone missing, a worn key that has started to stick. Others are not: a key that has vanished, a smart fob that suddenly reports 'key not detected', or a locked car with the key inside.

Where it happens is fairly predictable. Residents of apartments and condos along the McBean Parkway corridor near Valencia Town Center lock themselves out in shared parking. Students in housing near CalArts misplace keys in the middle of a busy week. Homeowners in the HOA-governed tracts across the villages tend to call about a spare or a replacement, often from their own driveway or street.

With a Hyundai there is always a question underneath the request: what does this particular car have? Hyundai's key history is split by trim, not just by model and year, and that changes the whole job. A base trim from the 2010s may have no immobilizer at all. A neighboring trim of the same model may need a programmed chip. We sort that out first, because it decides what you need and what it should cost.

  • Spare or duplicate key, made before you are stuck without one
  • Replacement after a lost, stolen or broken key
  • All keys lost, with no working key to copy from
  • Smart fob that is dead, unreliable or no longer recognized
  • Locked-out car, covered on our Valencia car lockout page
  • Ignition or door-lock trouble, including damage from a theft attempt

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

Our vans are equipped to do the work where the car is parked, so you do not need to tow a Hyundai to a shop to get a key. Nothing here is complicated, but the order matters, and it is the same order whether you are at home in one of the villages or in a parking lot.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the year, and what happened to the key.
  2. We ask about the trim and the key style: a plain metal key, a flip key, a push-button start fob. If you can read the VIN from the dash or the door jamb, that helps a great deal.
  3. We come to you, which in Valencia means a drive from our Westwood storefront, about 34 miles away, or from wherever a mobile van is working.
  4. At the car we confirm what it has: whether there is an immobilizer at all, what kind of key it uses, and how many keys currently work.
  5. We cut the key blade where one is needed, then program the chip or fob through the OBD-II port if the car requires it.
  6. You test it yourself. The key should turn, the car should start, and the remote functions should work. We do not leave until you have seen that.

Which Hyundai key do you have? Key eras in plain terms

Hyundai's US keys do not follow a clean timeline. When a chip is present at all, the systems moved through several generations, and knowing which one is in your hand tells us how the key is made and programmed.

On some late-1990s and early-2000s cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, the chip was a Texas 4D-60. Through the 2000s and into the early 2010s the common chip was Philips ID46. In the mid-to-late 2010s, Hyundai moved to DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES chip listed on some models.

The newest cars use NXP Hitag-AES smart keys. By model, that means Elantra smart keys from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025. Parts sellers label these newest chips inconsistently. Most models are listed as '4A', while the 2021 and newer Elantra is split between '4A' and '6A'. Because of that, we confirm the chip by the fob's part number rather than trusting a catalog listing or the year alone.

If you are holding a fob and are not sure which kind it is, that is fine. Tell us what it looks like and read us any number printed on the case, and we will work from there.

Does my Hyundai even have an immobilizer?

This is the part of Hyundai's story that surprises most owners. Per Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list, a large share of base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer at all. That list covers Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even Palisade 2020-2021. That missing hardware is the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave sometimes called the 'Kia Boys' trend.

What this means for keys is practical. On a no-immobilizer car, no programming is needed. Any properly cut metal key starts it, and a hardware-store copy can work. On a chip-equipped trim, that same plain copy will turn in the lock but will not start the car. Trim and build date decide, not model year alone. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.

If your car was a theft target, you may need more than a key. Owners often come to us with a damaged ignition lock cylinder or steering column. We can look at the ignition, repair or replace the cylinder where that is the real problem, and tell you plainly that Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update for affected models. A new key does not fix a car that can be started without one.

What if I have lost all my Hyundai keys?

All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On immobilizer-equipped Hyundais, programming happens through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and on most 2006-2019 models the tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN. That makes add-a-key and all-keys-lost routine locksmith work, with no dealer involvement and no need to tow the car.

On a no-immobilizer base car, all keys lost is mostly a cutting job. We make a key that fits the lock and the car starts, since there is no chip to program.

The newest generation is where we are honest about limits. On the Hitag-AES '4A' cars, roughly 2023 and newer depending on model, aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost done with an Autel IM-series tool that read the PIN through the OBD port. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We check coverage for your exact vehicle before we promise anything, and if your car is one that needs the dealer, we will tell you so before you pay for a visit.

What affects the cost of a Hyundai key in Valencia?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because for Hyundais the range is wide and honest pricing depends on the car in front of us. Here is what moves the cost, so you can see why two Hyundais can end up in very different places.

  • Whether the car has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer base trim needs a cut key only. A chip car needs the key, the chip and programming.
  • Key type. A plain blade, a flip key and a push-button smart fob involve different parts and different amounts of work.
  • Chip generation. Older ID46 and ID47 systems are better understood than the newest Hitag-AES cars, where tool access can be more involved.
  • Spare or all keys lost. Adding a key to a car that still has a working one is simpler than starting from nothing.
  • Fob quality. Genuine or good-quality parts cost more than the cloned and aftermarket chips that sometimes fail intermittently, and we would rather not install the second kind.
  • Whether the ignition needs work. Theft damage or worn wafers can turn a key job into a lock repair job.
  • Time and place. Service at night or on a weekend and the distance to your location can affect the total.
  • Dealer-only cases. If a newer model needs the dealer, we say so rather than bill you for an attempt that cannot succeed.

Dealer or locksmith for a Hyundai key?

Both are legitimate, and which one is better depends on the car. A dealer has factory access, and for the very newest Hitag-AES models that access can still matter. If your Hyundai is a recent build and our tools do not yet cover it, the dealer or a NASTF-credentialed service may be the right call, and we would tell you that.

For most other Hyundais, a locksmith is the more practical route. Immobilizer cars from roughly 2006 through 2019 are generally routine for us. Coming to you also removes the cost and hassle of towing a car with no working key across the valley to a service department and waiting on a schedule.

One more fair point: the dealer is also where you go for Hyundai's free anti-theft software update, which is a separate matter from the key. Many owners do both, with the key from us and the update from Hyundai.

If you want to compare before deciding, call and describe the car. We will tell you what we think it needs and whether we expect to handle it.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Hyundai in Valencia?

We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Valencia is part of our regular map. We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and mobile service vans that come to you. When you call, you are dealing with one company, not a dispatch middleman who passes your job to whoever is free.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on Hyundais in particular, because so much depends on identifying the trim correctly before touching anything.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you call for that license number. It is a fair question and we encourage it. For a wider look at what we do with other makes, see our Hyundai key page or the overview of car key replacement in Valencia.

Hyundai key service across Valencia's villages

Valencia covers ZIP codes 91354 and 91355, and the character of the area changes from village to village. In Bridgeport, Northpark and Northbridge, the single-family HOA tracts built from the 1960s through the 2000s mean most Hyundai calls are about spares, replacements and worn keys in a home driveway. In Valencia Summit, Valencia Glen, Old Orchard, Valencia Hills and the Copper Hill area, the story is much the same.

Gated enclaves such as Westridge and the north edge of Tesoro del Valle add a practical wrinkle: we may need to be let in, so tell us your gate details when you call. In the newer FivePoint Valencia development to the west, owners of new homes are often setting up smart locks, and the car keys go on the same to-do list.

Near Valencia Town Center, the townhome and condo clusters and the McBean Parkway corridor are where lockouts and lost keys show up most. Near Valencia Industrial Center, work vehicles and personal cars share the same need for a quick answer. In CalArts-area student housing, a lost key in a busy week is routine.

Climate plays a small part. Hot, dry summers with large day-night swings cause seasonal door and frame movement on houses, and wind-blown dust reaches exterior locks during Santa Ana events. On a high-mileage car, a worn or dusty door lock can start to stick, and that is worth looking at before it becomes a lockout. Our Valencia service page lists everything we do in town, and you can also reach us through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just get a copy of my Hyundai key at a hardware store?

It depends on the trim. On a no-immobilizer base car, a plain metal copy can start the engine. On a chip-equipped trim, a hardware-store copy will turn in the lock but will not start the car, because the chip has to be programmed. Build date and trim decide, not model year alone, so we check your car first.

Does my Hyundai have an immobilizer?

Maybe not. Hyundai's own anti-theft update list shows many base turn-key trims from 2011-2022 shipped with none, and immobilizers became standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021. Because it varies by trim and vehicle, we confirm it in person or by VIN.

Can you make a Hyundai key if I have lost every key?

Usually yes. On most immobilizer-equipped 2006-2019 models, the tool can read or calculate the PIN, so all-keys-lost is routine. On the newest Hitag-AES cars, roughly 2023 and newer, coverage is still maturing and some jobs may need the dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm for your exact car.

My Hyundai says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery in a smart fob is a common cause, and the emergency blade inside the fob can still open the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob itself may be failing, which we can test. See our key fob replacement in Valencia page.

Do you come to me in Valencia, or do I bring the car in?

We come to you. Our mobile vans work where the car is parked, whether that is a driveway, a condo lot or a street in any of the villages. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and calls are answered 24/7 at (213) 577-1366.

My Hyundai was a theft target. Is a new key enough?

Often it is not. Theft attempts can damage the ignition cylinder or steering column, and no-immobilizer trims are the ones affected by the 2021-2023 wave. We can repair or replace a damaged ignition lock, and Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update for affected models.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the number before they start work. It is a normal request, and a legitimate company will not mind it.

What if I am locked out and the key is still inside?

Call us and tell us the model and year. A lockout is a different job from key replacement, and we handle it without damaging the car. Details are on our car lockout service in Valencia page.
