Hyundai Santa Fe key replacement in Los Angeles

A Hyundai Santa Fe key job depends on the generation. 2007-2012 cars use ID46 transponder keys we program over OBD, 2013-2022 base trims may have no chip at all, and 2023-2026 use push-button Hitag-AES smart fobs. Call (213) 577-1366 with your year and VIN, and we'll tell you exactly what your car needs.

What does a first-generation Santa Fe (2001-2006) need?

The Santa Fe has been sold in the US since 2001, and its key has changed more than most owners realize: plain metal, then chipped transponder keys, then push-button smart fobs. Which one you hold decides whether a replacement is a quick cut, a cut plus programming, or a fob job. The year-by-year table on this page lists each model year. The sections below explain what it means for the era your car comes from.

The first generation (SM, 2001-2006) is the era with the most uncertainty, and we would rather say so than bluff. Only one catalog we consulted lists a Texas 4D-60 chip for 2001 and 2002, so we treat that as unverified. From 2003, catalogs list an ID46 (PCF7936) chip for immobilizer-equipped cars, also unverified. What we do know is that many US base cars shipped with no immobilizer at all, and fitment depended on trim.

So on these years we identify chip-or-no-chip on your actual vehicle before anything is cut. No chip means a cut key is the job. A chip means the key must be cut and programmed, which our data lists as an OBD procedure. Onboard key-programming procedures are also reported for some mid-2000s cars, and we verify which applies on the vehicle. We confirm the exact setup by VIN rather than assume.

Two problems come up on these cars. A hardware-store copy cut without a chip can open the doors but will not start an immobilizer-equipped Santa Fe. And worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars can make a perfectly good key feel bad. It is worth knowing which one you have before you buy a new key.

What does a 2007-2012 Santa Fe use?

This is the cleanest era to answer. The second generation (CM, 2007-2012) uses an ID46 transponder key (PCF7936 or PCF7952), and that chip is verified against more than one source. The car is absent from Hyundai's anti-theft list, which is consistent with a standard immobilizer, so assume the key has a chip and must be programmed to the car.

ID46 keys program through the OBD port, and an all-keys-lost situation is possible on these years. There is a mechanical backup key in the system, but a metal-only copy will not start the engine. If someone offers you a blade-only spare for a car this age, ask whether it is chipped and programmed. Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips are another trap: they can work at first, then fail intermittently, usually at the worst moment.

What about 2013-2018, when some Santa Fes had no immobilizer?

The third generation (DM, 2013-2018) was sold as the 2-row Santa Fe Sport and the 3-row Santa Fe, also called the XL, which ran through 2019. Both are on Hyundai's official anti-theft list: Santa Fe 2013-2022 and Santa Fe Sport 2013-2018. On that list, base turn-key trims have no factory immobilizer.

That changes the advice. On a base trim with no immobilizer, a plain metal copy starts the car, so a duplicate is a mechanical job. On equipped trims, catalogs list an ID46 chip, with ID47 on some 2016 and later smart keys. We have not verified that for every car, so we identify the chip on your Santa Fe and confirm by VIN.

These model years were also primary targets of the 2021-2023 theft wave sometimes called the 'Kia Boys' trend. If your Santa Fe was hit, the damage is often to the ignition lock cylinder or steering column, and that usually needs a lock rebuild or replacement, not just a new key. Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update at hyundaiantitheft.com, and we recommend it alongside any key work.

How do 2019-2022 Santa Fes differ?

Model year 2019 is confusing because two vehicles share it: the new TM Santa Fe and the carry-over 3-row Santa Fe XL. Both are on Hyundai's anti-theft list, and the 2019 XL is named explicitly. Base SE and SEL turn-key trims have no immobilizer. Smart-key trims are catalog-listed as ID47 (Hitag 3), though fob-level listings for 2020 through 2022 do not state the chip, so we mark it unconfirmed.

2022 is the year where build date matters. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so a late-build 2022 carries a chip while an earlier build may not. Two 2022 Santa Fes can need different work, so we check your car instead of going by the model year alone.

If your key is a fob, confirm the fob part number and VIN before ordering anything online. A mismatched fob is an avoidable mistake and a wasted purchase.

What about 2023 through 2026 push-button Santa Fes?

The facelifted TM in 2023 came off the anti-theft list, with an immobilizer standard, and moved to the 4A Hitag-AES smart key. Our data for 2023 is marked conflicting. Fob listings show the Hitag-AES 4A chip, and a 2023 all-keys-lost has been documented over OBD with the PIN read on the programming tool itself rather than bought from a third party. But some catalogs still list ID47 for 2023, so the fob part number decides. Lower trims may retain a bladed ignition, which we confirm on the car.

The all-new MX5 generation (2024-2026) makes push-button start standard with Hitag-AES 4A fobs. Example fob numbers in our data include 95440-P6040 and TQ8-FOB-4F61M43. Aftermarket OBD all-keys-lost is documented on adjacent 4A Hyundais, and we confirm coverage per job instead of promising it up front. 2026 is early data: we expect the hardware to carry over from 2024-2025, and we confirm that by VIN.

Every one of these fobs has a mechanical emergency blade inside, so a dead fob battery should not leave you locked out of the car.

Spare key or all keys lost: how does the job change by era?

Duplicating works best from a key that still works, and our data shows an original key is needed for a straightforward copy in every era. All keys lost is possible on the years through 2025, though it takes more work and the method depends on the car. For 2026 we cannot yet say all-keys-lost is supported, and we will tell you plainly after checking the VIN.

Expect to be asked to show the car is yours. Any reputable locksmith will ask.

  • 2001-2006: no immobilizer means a cut key; with one, the key is cut and programmed. Either way we identify it on the car first.
  • 2007-2012: an ID46 key is cut and programmed by OBD, and all keys lost is possible.
  • 2013-2022 base trims with no chip: a lost key is largely a mechanical problem, unless a theft attempt damaged the ignition and turned it into a lock repair.
  • 2013-2022 chipped and smart-key trims: we identify the chip, confirm the programming route, then make the key.
  • 2023-2026: fob programming over OBD, with all-keys-lost documented for 2023 and coverage for 2024-2025 confirmed per job.

Can a locksmith program a Santa Fe key, or is it dealer-only?

For the years in our data, programming is listed as OBD, meaning it is done through the diagnostic port with professional equipment, not only in a dealer service bay. Our data does not flag a secure-data-release registration as required for 2001 through 2023. For 2024 through 2026 that question is still open in our data, so we check it against your VIN. If a particular car turns out to need something only the dealer can supply, we will tell you before we start, not after.

Here is how a typical Santa Fe job goes:

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 with the year, whether it is the Sport, the 2-row or the 3-row, whether it starts with a key or a button, and the VIN.
  2. We work out chip-or-no-chip, or the fob part number, from the VIN and what is on the car.
  3. We explain what the job involves, what affects the cost, and whether it can be done where the car sits.
  4. We cut the key or prepare the fob, then program it to the car through the OBD port where the car calls for it.
  5. We test every key and fob: doors, remote functions, starting, and the emergency blade.

What affects the cost of a Santa Fe key?

We do not put numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost:

Once we know your year, trim and situation, we tell you what applies before any work begins.

  • Whether the key has a chip at all. A base-trim 2013-2022 metal key is a lighter job than a chipped or smart key.
  • Key type: bladed transponder, smart key with blade, or push-button fob. Fobs cost more than bladed keys, and a lost fob costs more than a lost bladed key.
  • Spare versus all keys lost. A working key to copy keeps the job simpler.
  • The exact fob part number and chip, especially from 2023 on, where catalogs conflict.
  • How many keys need programming.
  • Ignition damage. After a theft attempt, the cylinder may need a rebuild or replacement on top of the key.
  • Where and when. Night and weekend calls, or a car far from our Westwood storefront, affect the job. If the car can safely be driven, coming to us is sometimes the lighter-cost option.

What goes wrong with Santa Fe keys most often?

The problems in our data follow the eras. Matching the symptom to the right one saves you from buying a key you do not need.

If you tell us the symptom when you call, we can often say whether it is the key, the fob battery, or the lock before we come out.

  • 2001-2012: worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars, hardware-store copies cut without a chip, and low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently.
  • 2013-2022: no factory immobilizer on base turn-key trims, which made these cars targets, plus ignition cylinders and steering columns damaged in theft attempts.
  • 2023-2026: a dead fob battery, where the dash reports 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door.
  • 2023-2026: worn fob buttons and cracked shells. Replacing a lost fob costs more than a bladed key, and all-keys-lost needs professional programming.

When should you call us instead of the dealer?

Call us when you are stuck with no working key, or when you want a spare without arranging your week around a dealer service department. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (213) 577-1366, and our mobile vans come to the car. With all keys lost, a dealer visit can mean a tow. The dealer can be the right call if we have told you your specific car needs something only they can supply.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Santa Fe key if I have lost every key?

Generally yes on 2001 through 2025, though the method depends on the generation. Cars with no immobilizer need mainly a cut key, while chipped cars and fobs need programming. For 2026 we confirm by VIN first. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Santa Fe?

Only if your car has no immobilizer, as on some base 2013-2022 trims. On a chipped car, a copy cut without a chip may open the doors but will not start the engine. We identify chip-or-no-chip on your vehicle.

My 2015 Santa Fe key is just metal. Does it have a chip?

Possibly not. Base turn-key trims of this generation had no factory immobilizer, so a plain metal key starts the car. Equipped trims do use a chip, catalog-listed as ID46. We confirm on the car and by VIN.

Is my 2023 Santa Fe fob Hitag-AES or ID47?

Our data on 2023 conflicts. Fob listings show the Hitag-AES 4A chip, but some catalogs still list ID47. The fob part number decides, so we check it, and the car, before ordering or programming anything.

My dash says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Often it is the fob battery. The emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door. If a new battery does not help, worn buttons or a damaged fob may be the cause, and we can test it.

Should I do Hyundai's anti-theft software update?

We recommend it. Hyundai lists Santa Fe 2013-2022 and Santa Fe Sport 2013-2018 as eligible for a free update at hyundaiantitheft.com. It does not replace a worn or damaged ignition, but it is worth doing alongside any key work.

Do you cover both the Santa Fe Sport and the Santa Fe XL?

Yes. The 2-row Santa Fe Sport and the 3-row Santa Fe, called the XL, are both in our data. We check which one you have, since the 2019 model year had two different vehicles.

How do I check that a California locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. Ask for the number before work starts, and ask for a clear explanation of what your car needs. Any honest company will give you both.

We cover all these cities
