Why did my key fob stop working?
A key fob is a small radio transmitter that talks to your car, and in most modern vehicles it also carries the chip that lets the engine start. When one stops working, the cause is usually one of four things: a dead battery, worn buttons or a cracked case, a fob that has lost its pairing with the car, or a fob that is simply gone. All four feel the same from the driver's seat. You press the button and nothing happens. The fix is very different for each.
Check the battery first. It is the lighter-cost fix, and it takes a few minutes if you have the right coin cell. If a fresh battery doesn't bring the fob back, or the fob has been dropped, soaked, or left on a dashboard, you are probably looking at a replacement shell, a replacement fob, or reprogramming. Valencia summers are hot and dry with large swings between day and night, and that is not kind to small plastic cases and electronics.
If the fob is lost rather than broken, the situation changes. A lost fob is also a security question, because whoever finds it may be able to get into your car if they connect it to the vehicle. We cover that on our lost car key replacement page. This page is about the fob itself: replacing it, programming it, and adding a spare.
Do I have a remote fob or a push-to-start smart key?
People use the words loosely, and the difference matters because it changes the job. Most of what we replace falls into two families.
A plain chip key with no buttons at all is a different job. That one is covered under transponder key programming. The pairing between key and car is similar, but the hardware is simpler.
If you are not sure which one you have, send us the make, model, and year, or tell us what the fob looks like and whether the car starts with a button. We confirm by VIN rather than guessing from the model name, because the same model can use different fobs across different years.
- Remote fob or remote head key: buttons for lock, unlock, and sometimes trunk or panic. You still put a key blade into the ignition or turn it to start the car. These are what people usually mean by a remote car key replacement.
- Smart key or proximity key: the fob stays in your pocket or bag, the car senses it nearby, and you start the engine with a push button. Proximity key replacement and push button start key replacement involve pairing the fob with the car's security system, and they are usually more involved than a basic remote.
- Flip keys and combination keys: a blade that folds into the fob. These count as remote keys, but the blade may need to be cut as well as the fob programmed.

Call (213) 577-1366How does mobile key fob programming work, step by step?
Mobile key fob programming means the work happens at your car, wherever it is parked in Valencia. Here is how a typical job goes.
Not every job follows this exact order. If you have a working fob, adding a spare is often simpler than starting from nothing. If every fob is gone, the process is different and takes more preparation. We explain which situation you are in before we begin.
- You call (213) 577-1366. The phone is answered at any hour, and you give us the make, model, year, and what kind of fob you have or had.
- We confirm what your vehicle needs by VIN: which fob type fits, whether programming can be done at your car, and whether anything about the job points toward a dealer.
- We tell you what the job involves and what will affect the cost, then send a mobile van to your location.
- On arrival we ask you to show that the vehicle is yours, and we check the fob against the car so we are not working with a mismatched part.
- If the key has an emergency blade, we cut it. Then we pair the new fob with the car.
- We test every function: lock, unlock, trunk or hatch, panic, and starting the engine. We also test any existing fob, since programming can affect the others.
- We talk through lost fobs that should no longer work, where the system allows removing them, and whether a spare makes sense now.
Can every key fob be programmed on the spot?
No, and anyone who says yes without knowing your VIN is guessing. Whether we can program a fob at your car depends on the make, model, and year. Many can be done on-site. Some depend on equipment or access that varies by manufacturer, and a few are dealer-only, meaning the dealership has to order or program the key.
When your vehicle falls into that last group, we tell you plainly before we start, and we help you work out the next step. That is better than driving 34 miles from our Westwood storefront to start a job we can't finish.
Fobs bought online are a similar case. Some pair fine and some don't, and quality varies a lot. If you already have one, tell us the details on the phone and we will say whether it looks workable before the van leaves.
What affects the cost of key fob replacement?
We don't quote numbers on a web page because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the factors that move the cost, so you can see where a quote comes from.
Our advice for keeping cost down is not complicated. If you still have one working fob, adding a spare now is usually the more economical route compared with waiting until every fob is gone. Fewer unknowns means a simpler job.
- Fob type: a basic remote is generally a lighter-cost part than a smart or proximity key.
- Original or aftermarket: manufacturer parts and aftermarket parts differ in price and in how reliably they pair.
- Vehicle make, model, and year: newer and more protected systems take more time and more specialized equipment.
- Whether you have a working key: copying from a working fob is different from creating a new key when all are lost.
- Emergency blade cutting: flip keys and smart keys with a hidden blade need the blade cut as well.
- Number of fobs: programming two at once is less work than two separate visits.
- Location and time of day: distance from our base and after-hours calls both factor in.
- Dealer involvement: if a dealer has to supply or program part of the job, that cost sits outside ours, and we tell you up front.

Call (213) 577-1366Key fob help across Valencia's villages and ZIP codes
Valencia is a master-planned community of named villages tied together by paseo walkways, mostly HOA single-family tracts with townhome and condo clusters near Town Center. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, 34 miles away, so the work here is done by our mobile vans. Call first so we arrive with the right fob and equipment for your car, not a general kit.
We cover both ZIP codes, 91354 and 91355, and the villages in them, including Bridgeport, Northpark, Northbridge, Valencia Summit, Valencia Glen, Old Orchard, Valencia Hills, and Westridge. If you are in a gated enclave such as Westridge or the north edge of Tesoro del Valle, tell us the gate details when you call so the van can get to your car.
Here is how a few Valencia situations apply to fobs specifically. In the apartment and condo buildings along the McBean Parkway corridor near Town Center, the door key and the car fob often live on one keychain. Lose the keychain and you have two problems at once; if the apartment door is the one that's locked, our apartment lockout page covers that side. Near CalArts, a student driving a car with a single fob is one lost keychain away from being stuck, and a spare is worth sorting out early. And if your fob quits in a lot at Valencia Town Center or near Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, we can come to the car rather than you finding a way to a shop.
If you are moving into a newer home in FivePoint Valencia and setting up a smart lock, that is a separate job from your car fob. We handle both, but keep them separate when you call so we can prepare properly for each.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a key fob?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call for that number, including us, and check it against the state's records before you hand over a car key. A reputable company will not mind the question.
- We have been in business since 1987. Key fobs and cars have changed a great deal in that time, and we have worked through those changes.
- We run a storefront in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so you are dealing with a real shop, not a phone number with no address behind it.
- We are one company, with no dispatch middlemen. The person you speak to is part of the team that does the work.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees our work.
- The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366.

Call (213) 577-1366How do I keep from getting stranded again?
The best moment to get a spare key fob is while you still have a working one. Programming from a working fob is typically a simpler job than programming when none exist, and you avoid the worst of the stress. Keep the spare somewhere other than your main keychain, such as at home in a safe spot, not in the glovebox.
Replace the fob battery when the range starts to shrink or the car needs a few presses to respond, rather than waiting for it to die at the wrong moment. Keep the fob away from heat on the dashboard, and if the buttons get gritty or sticky, deal with it early. Wind-blown dust is a real thing in the Santa Clarita Valley during Santa Ana events, and small gaps in a fob case can let it in.
When the problem is not the fob
Sometimes the fob is fine and something else is wrong. If the fob is locked inside the car, see our car lockout service. If the key goes in but won't turn, or the car won't start with a known-good fob, the ignition may be the issue, and ignition repair is the right page. For a traditional key without a remote, car key replacement is the closer fit.

Frequently asked questions
How much does key fob replacement cost in Valencia?
It depends on the fob type, your vehicle's make, model, and year, whether you have a working key, whether a blade needs cutting, and where and when you need us. A basic remote is generally a lighter-cost job than a smart key. Call (213) 577-1366 with your vehicle details and we will explain what applies to your car before we send a van.
Can you program a key fob at my home or workplace in Valencia?
In many cases yes. Our mobile vans come to your car in any Valencia village. Whether on-site programming works for your vehicle depends on the make, model, and year, so we confirm by VIN when you call and tell you before we come out.
Do I have to go to the dealer for a smart key?
Not always, but sometimes. Some vehicles can be handled by a locksmith, and some are effectively dealer-only. We confirm by VIN and tell you honestly which case you are in, rather than starting a job we can't complete.
I lost my only key fob. Can you still make a new one?
Often yes, but an all-keys-lost job is different from copying a working fob and takes more preparation. Whether it can be done at your car depends on the vehicle. Call us with the make, model, and year and we will confirm what is possible. Our lost car key replacement page covers that situation in more detail.
Is it cheaper to replace the fob or just change the battery?
A battery is the lighter-cost fix, so try it first if the fob is physically fine. If a new battery doesn't help, or the fob is cracked, water-damaged, or has lost its pairing, then replacement or reprogramming is the realistic route.
Can you program a fob I bought online?
Sometimes. Quality varies, and some online fobs won't pair properly or at all. Tell us the make, model, year, and what the fob says or looks like, and we will say whether it is likely to work before the van leaves.
If I replace a lost fob, can the old one still open my car?
On some vehicles we can remove lost fobs from the car's memory when we program the new one, and on others the system doesn't allow it. We confirm by VIN for your car and explain what is possible at the visit.
Do you serve both 91354 and 91355?
Yes. We serve Valencia across both ZIP codes. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and tell us your village or cross streets. If you are inside a gated enclave, give us the gate details too.
