Hyundai Palisade key replacement

A Palisade key depends on trim and year. Most 2020-2025 SUVs use ID47 push-button smart fobs programmed through the OBD port, while base 2020-2021 turn-key SUVs have no immobilizer. 2026 is new and unsettled. We confirm by VIN. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour.

Which Palisade key do you actually have?

The Hyundai Palisade has been sold in two generations so far, and the key situation changes more than most owners expect. The 2020 through 2025 models are the LX2 generation. The 2026 model is the all-new LX3. Even inside the LX2 years there is a split worth understanding before anyone talks about programming or replacement, because trim decides as much as model year does.

Most Palisades on the road are push-button cars with ID47 (Hitag 3) smart keys, programmed through the OBD port. But the base 2020 and 2021 SE was built with a turn-key ignition and a mechanical key, and no factory immobilizer. An owner holding a plain metal key and an owner holding a proximity fob need very different things from a locksmith.

This page walks through each era, what we can say with confidence, and where we simply confirm by VIN before telling you anything firm. The table on this page lists the year-by-year key details. For the wider picture, see our Hyundai key page or the main car keys overview.

What do 2020 and 2021 Palisade owners need?

These two years have the most surprising setup. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list includes the 2020 and 2021 Palisade, because the base SE trim used a turn-key ignition with no immobilizer. A 2021 spec table we consulted confirms that push-button start and the proximity key were not available on the SE. They came on SEL and above only.

So there are really two kinds of early Palisade. The SEL and higher trims carry ID47 (Hitag 3) smart keys, and that part of our data is verified against two separate sources. The base SE has a mechanical key and no chip check at the ignition.

That has real consequences. On a base SE, a plain metal copy will turn the ignition and start the vehicle. That is convenient when all you want is a spare, but it is also the reason these model years were primary targets of the 2021-2023 theft wave people call the 'Kia Boys' trend. If your Palisade is a base SE, a new key is only part of the conversation.

If you have an SEL or above from these years, you have a push-button car, a smart fob, and a mechanical emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Having an original key in hand is the straightforward path to a duplicate, and all-keys-lost is possible if you have none. Our data lists no NASTF SDRM credential requirement for these years.

Not sure which one you drive? Look at the dash. A start button means a smart-key car. A slot you turn a key in means turn-key. Either way, we confirm by VIN before we order or cut anything.

What about 2022 through 2025 Palisades?

From 2022 the Palisade comes off the anti-theft list, because immobilizers became standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021. Push-button start with a smart proximity key is the expected setup, and the facelifted LX2 that arrived for 2023 has push-button start as standard.

Here we want to be careful, because our data for these years is not fully verified. The fob listings we consulted show Hitag 3 ID47 smart keys, but the picture has gaps. For 2022 we could not confirm the exact fob part number from a second source, and we could not confirm whether a turn-key base configuration persisted into early 2022. For 2023 and 2024, sources conflict: the better-sourced listings show ID47 through 2024, while one catalog lists a 4A chip starting in 2023. For 2025, the final LX2 year, ID47 fobs are expected to carry over, but the listings we consulted stop at 2024.

What that means for you is simple. We do not guess from the model year alone. We read the part number on your fob or vehicle, check by VIN, and confirm the chip family before ordering anything. A fob built on the wrong chip family will not program, so that check is cheaper than a mistake.

  • 2022: ID47 smart key expected; fob part number and any early turn-key base configuration checked per vehicle.
  • 2023 and 2024: ID47 is the better-sourced answer, one catalog says 4A, so we confirm by the fob part number on your vehicle.
  • 2025: ID47 expected to carry over from earlier LX2 years; confirmed by part number before we order.
  • All of these years have a mechanical backup blade in the fob and use OBD programming.

What if you own the 2026 Palisade?

The 2026 Palisade is the all-new LX3 generation, and the honest answer is that aftermarket support has not settled yet. One catalog points to a Hitag AES 4A smart key, which would be a newer chip family than the ID47 on earlier cars. But aftermarket part listings and programming procedures are not established, and we do not want to pretend otherwise.

For 2026, an original key is the starting point for any duplicate. Whether an all-keys-lost situation can be handled outside the dealership is something we cannot state yet. It may be dealer-only until tool support settles. We confirm current coverage before quoting, and if the dealer is the only route we will tell you that plainly instead of letting you wait on us.

If you have a 2026 and a working key, call anyway. Knowing what is possible today, before you lose the only fob, is worth a short conversation.

Spare fob or all keys lost: what changes?

Across the LX2 years, our data says an original key is needed for straightforward duplication and that all-keys-lost is possible. For 2026 the all-keys-lost question is open.

A spare is the easier job. The car still recognizes a working key, the fob family is easier to identify, and nothing is urgent. An all-keys-lost job is harder because we work from the vehicle alone: identifying the right fob, cutting the emergency blade, and programming from scratch with nothing on the key side to start from.

Replacing a lost smart fob also costs more than replacing a bladed key. That is true of the Palisade as a rule, and it is the biggest reason we tell owners to make a spare while they still have one working key. The base 2020-2021 SE is the exception, since a mechanically cut key is enough to start it, which brings us back to the anti-theft update below.

Programming reality: OBD, dealer-only, and what we do not know

For 2020 through 2025 smart-key Palisades, the method is OBD programming. We connect a programming tool to the diagnostic port under the dash and register the new fob with the car. Our data lists no NASTF SDRM credential requirement for those years, so this is work we can do in the field with the right fob in hand.

The unknowns are narrower than they sound. Data for 2022 through 2025 is marked unverified or conflicting on the chip family, not on the programming method. That is why the fob part number matters so much. Get the part number right and the OBD procedure follows.

The 2026 LX3 is where we say plainly that we do not know. The programming method is not established, whether an NASTF credential is needed is not established, and all-keys-lost may be dealer-only for a while. If we cannot do it, you will hear that from us before any work starts.

How we handle a Palisade key job, step by step

Every job follows the same shape, though the details change with your year and trim.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the model year, the trim if you know it, whether the car starts with a button or a turned key, and how many working keys you have.
  2. We confirm the setup by VIN and, where our data is unverified or conflicting, by the part number on your fob or vehicle.
  3. We source the correct fob for your chip family and cut the emergency blade.
  4. We come to you with a mobile van, or you can visit our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024.
  5. We program through the OBD port, then test that the car starts, the doors lock and unlock, the proximity detection works, and the emergency blade opens the door.
  6. If your car is a 2020 or 2021, we point you to Hyundai's free anti-theft software update at hyundaiantitheft.com.

What affects the cost of a Palisade key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your car. Here is what actually moves the price.

  • Smart fob versus turn-key. A base 2020-2021 SE with a mechanical key is a different job from a push-button fob.
  • Spare versus all keys lost. All-keys-lost takes more work, and for 2026 it may not be available outside the dealer.
  • Which fob your car needs. Where data is unverified or conflicting, such as 2022 through 2025, the exact part is confirmed first, and the part itself affects cost.
  • Ignition or column damage. Theft attempts can wreck the lock cylinder, and that is a lock rebuild or replacement on top of a key.
  • Where the work happens. Coming to our storefront is usually the more economical route than a mobile visit, though the van is there when your car cannot move.

What commonly goes wrong with Palisade keys?

The failures we see described in our data are fairly specific to this vehicle, and most do not need a full replacement.

  • Dead fob battery. The dash reports 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first.
  • Worn buttons and cracked shells. The fob works but looks rough or responds poorly. A new shell or button set may be enough.
  • Theft damage to the ignition. Ignition lock cylinders and steering columns damaged in theft attempts often need a lock rebuild or replacement, not just a new key.
  • No immobilizer on the base 2020-2021 SE. A plain metal copy starts it, so these cars remain the easiest to steal. Hyundai offers a free anti-theft software update, and we recommend it alongside any key work.
  • Lost-fob cost shock. Replacing a lost smart fob costs more than a bladed key, and all-keys-lost needs professional programming.

Should you call us or the dealer?

For a 2020 through 2025 Palisade, calling us first usually makes sense. The method is OBD programming, and we can come to you or you can drive to Westwood. For 2026, the dealer may be the only route for now, and we will say so after checking current coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Palisade key if I lost every key?

For 2020 through 2025, our data says all-keys-lost is possible, with programming through the OBD port. For the 2026 Palisade, it may be dealer-only until tool support settles. We confirm by VIN and tell you straight.

Does my 2020 or 2021 Palisade have a chip key?

It depends on trim. SEL and above use ID47 (Hitag 3) smart keys with push-button start. The base SE has a turn-key ignition and no factory immobilizer. We confirm which you have by VIN.

My Palisade starts with a plain metal key. Is that normal?

On a base 2020 or 2021 SE, yes. There is no immobilizer, which is why these years were targets in the 2021-2023 theft wave. Hyundai offers a free anti-theft software update at hyundaiantitheft.com, and we recommend it.

Which chip does my 2023 or 2024 Palisade use?

Most listings show Hitag 3 ID47 through 2024, but one catalog lists 4A from 2023. Because sources conflict, we confirm the chip by the fob part number on your vehicle before ordering.

My dash says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery causes that message, and the emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the problem continues, call us and we will check the fob.

Do you need dealer credentials or NASTF access to program a Palisade?

Our data lists no NASTF SDRM requirement for 2020 through 2025. For the 2026 model, that question is not established yet, and we confirm current coverage before quoting.

Can you come to me, or do I need to bring the car?

Both work. We have mobile service vans, and you can visit our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour and we will sort out which suits your situation.

How much does a Palisade key cost?

It depends on whether you have a turn-key or smart-key car, a spare or all keys lost, which fob your car needs, and whether the ignition is damaged. Call with your year and trim and we will explain the quote before work starts.
