BMW X3 key replacement in Los Angeles

The X3's key story splits by era. 2004-2017 models are specialist work we handle, even with every key lost. 2018-2024 cars need one working key to add another, and 2025-2026 are dealer-only. Call (213) 577-1366 and we confirm the exact setup by VIN.

Which BMW X3 do you have? Four key eras, four different jobs

The X3 spans four generations in our data, and the key system changed enough between them that a 2006 and a 2020 are practically different problems. The year-by-year table on this page lists key type, chip family and programming method for every model year from 2004 through 2026. This text covers what the table can't: what each era actually means for you when a key is lost, worn out, dead, or was never duplicated.

The short version: the E83 (2004-2010) is the older EWS system with a flip remote-head key. The F25 (2011-2017) uses CAS4 or CAS4+ with a push-button smart key. The G01 (2018-2024) is the BDC2 generation, where a working key matters a great deal. The G45 (2025-2026) is the newest and, as far as we can establish, dealer-only. For other models see our BMW key replacement overview, or browse all of our car key services.

  • A flip key with a metal blade that you turn in the ignition: E83, 2004-2010.
  • A smart fob with push-button start: F25, G01 or G45, sorted by model year.
  • Not sure which one you have? Give us the VIN and we sort it out, including edge cases like 2010 and 2022-2024.

What does an E83 X3 (2004-2010) need?

The E83 is one of the last BMWs on the older EWS immobilizer. Its key is a flip remote-head key carrying an ID44 (PCF7935) transponder chip on an HU92 blade. There is no CAS module and no slot in the dash; the X3 kept EWS to the end of E83 production.

This is the most forgiving X3 era when keys go missing. New keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench with EWS-class tools such as the AK90 or Abrites family, or ordered pre-cut by VIN. No working key is needed, so all-keys-lost is routine specialist work, not a dealer-only situation. Duplicating from a key you still have is simpler again.

One honest caveat about 2010. Most key catalogs list the E83 key as 2003-2009 or narrower, and only a single catalog extends it to 2010. No source shows a different key system for that year, and the chip is single-sourced, so we confirm the key by VIN and FCC ID (the LX8FZV family) before cutting. If it checks out, it is the same EWS job as the earlier years.

What does an F25 X3 (2011-2017) need?

The F25 moved to CAS4 or CAS4+ and a smart key with an ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro) chip. Push-button start is standard, and the fob holds a mechanical backup key.

This is specialist territory but not dealer-only. If you still have a key, adding another is done through the OBD port with professional programming tools (VVDI2, Autel and CGDI-class equipment, according to the tool documentation), and you don't have to surrender the original. If every key is gone, the usual route is bench-reading the CAS4 module to get the data a new key needs. That is more involved than the E83, and it is not a job for a general-purpose key machine.

Many F25 owners only discover they have a single key when it stops working. If that is you, a spare made while the car still starts is far less trouble than an all-keys-lost call later.

Why is a G01 X3 (2018-2024) a different story?

The G01 runs on the BDC2 body controller with an N5F-ID21A-family smart key built on the ID49 (Hitag Pro) chip, plus a mechanical backup key. Some cars are equipped with BMW Digital Key, which lets a phone or card act as a key.

Here the rule flips: a working key matters. With one in hand, add-a-key is possible for specialists, for example with Autel BDC02 licenses. Without one, true all-keys-lost is dealer territory. Xhorse's BDC2 bench adapter explicitly cannot do all-keys-lost, and the one advertised aftermarket route, the Yanhua ACDP, carries its own vendor's warning that it locks the BDC2 against future dealer keys. We do not offer it. We won't risk leaving you unable to get a dealer key later just to say yes to a job.

For 2022 through 2024, the key part and chip were carried over from an earlier G-series catalog listing and not separately confirmed, and a 2022 facelift car may carry a newer fob. For those years we confirm the exact setup by VIN before quoting.

If you own a G01 with exactly one working key, treat that key as the thing to protect. Getting a second key made while the first still works keeps you out of dealer-only territory.

What about a 2025 or 2026 X3?

The G45 is the current generation, with the newest BDC architecture and Digital Key as standard. We have no verified chip family for it, and there is no established aftermarket add-key or all-keys-lost path. So, plainly: for a 2025 or 2026 X3, key programming is dealer-only. We would rather say that in the first conversation than leave you waiting on a job we can't do.

What we can still help with is working out what is actually wrong. On this generation a 'key not detected' warning is commonly a dead coin cell in the fob, not a lost key, and that is a very different problem from needing a new key. Tell us the symptoms and we will tell you which one it sounds like.

Duplicate or all-keys-lost: how the answer changes by era

Two terms matter. A duplicate, or add-a-key, means programming a new key while at least one working key exists. All-keys-lost means none do. On these cars a cut blade alone won't start the engine; the chip has has to be accepted by the car's immobilizer system.

The pattern runs opposite to what most owners expect: the newer the X3, the less room there is outside the dealer.

  • E83 (2004-2010): an original key is not needed, and all-keys-lost is possible and routine. For 2010 we confirm by VIN and FCC ID first.
  • F25 (2011-2017): an original key is not needed. All-keys-lost is possible, usually by bench-reading the CAS4 module.
  • G01 (2018-2024): an original key is needed. All-keys-lost is dealer territory and not something we offer.
  • G45 (2025-2026): an original key is needed, and the whole job is dealer-only.

How do we handle an X3 key job, step by step?

Every X3 call starts the same way, because the year and the key situation decide everything that follows.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366, any hour, and tell us the model year, how many working keys you have, and what the car does when you try to start it.
  2. We identify the generation from the VIN, including the edge cases: 2010 for the E83 and 2022 through 2024 for the G01.
  3. We tell you which path applies: bench or OBD work we do, a job that needs a working key, or a dealer-only situation.
  4. For jobs we do, either a mobile van comes to the car or you bring it to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, whichever suits the work.
  5. We prepare the key, program it, and check every function: starting, the remote buttons, and the mechanical backup blade.
  6. We talk through a spare, because a second key made while one still works is the most sensible protection an X3 owner has.

What affects the cost of an X3 key replacement?

We don't quote a figure for an X3 until we've confirmed the VIN, because the same badge covers very different jobs. These are the factors that move the cost.

For E83 and F25 cars, a specialist is often the more economical route compared with the dealer. For a G01 with every key lost, or any 2025-2026 car, there is no aftermarket route to compare, so the dealer is the answer.

  • Era: an E83 flip key is a simpler part than an F25 or G01 smart fob, and our data notes that a lost-fob replacement costs more on the F-series than on E-series keys.
  • Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost: programming beside a working key is a lighter job than bench-reading a module.
  • Bench work: F25 all-keys-lost usually means reading the CAS4 module itself, which takes specialist time and equipment.
  • Software access: some G01 add-a-key work depends on specific tool licenses for the BDC2.
  • Fob type: Digital Key equipment, facelift fobs and VIN-ordered parts can change the part itself.
  • Where the work happens: our van coming to the car, or you bringing it to the storefront.

Which key problems do X3 owners run into?

Many 'I need a new key' calls turn out to be smaller problems. These are worth checking before you replace anything. If your symptom matches one, mention it when you call; it may save you a new key.

  • E83: the rechargeable battery in the remote dies and the buttons stop working, while the chip still starts the car. The key isn't lost, only the remote side is tired.
  • E83: worn HU-series key blades and cracked key shells.
  • E83: an EWS no-start, where the key turns but the engine doesn't crank, caused by a key and module sync fault.
  • F25: a dead fob coin cell gives a 'key not detected' warning, while the emergency start position still works.
  • F25: Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults on cars equipped with it, which are worth diagnosing separately from the fob.
  • G01 and G45: the same 'key not detected' warning from a dead coin cell, plus BMW Digital Key enrollment issues on equipped cars.
  • Any lost fob: replacement costs more on the F-series than on E-series keys, and on the G-series it is expensive and usually involves the dealer.

When should you call us, and when should you go to the dealer?

Call us for any E83 or F25, whether you have one key, two, or none. Call us for a G01 when you have at least one working key and need another, or when you aren't sure what is wrong. Go to the dealer for a G01 with every key lost and for any 2025-2026 X3. If you can't tell which situation you are in, call anyway; telling you where to go is part of the job.

Why us for the jobs that are ours: Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024, and mobile service vans, serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and the phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Whoever you hire, ask for their BSIS LCO license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a legitimate company will give it to you without fuss. When you're ready, use our contact page or call, and for the wider range of what we do, start from our home page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace a BMW X3 key if I've lost every key?

It depends on the generation. For 2004-2017 models, yes: all-keys-lost is specialist work we handle, using EWS module data on the E83 or bench-reading the CAS4 module on the F25. For 2018-2024 cars it is dealer territory, and for 2025-2026 it is dealer-only. We confirm by VIN first.

Do I need my original key to make a copy?

Not on 2004-2017 X3s; our data shows no original key is needed. On 2018 and newer, a working key is required to add another, and for 2025-2026 the job is dealer-only anyway.

My X3 is a 2010. Does it use the older E83 key?

Probably, but catalogs conflict. Most list the E83 key as 2003-2009 or narrower, and only one extends it to 2010. No source shows a different key system for 2010, but we confirm by VIN and FCC ID (the LX8FZV family) before cutting.

Why don't you do all-keys-lost on a 2018 or newer X3?

The only advertised aftermarket route, the Yanhua ACDP, carries its vendor's warning that it locks the BDC2 against future dealer keys, and Xhorse's BDC2 adapter explicitly cannot do all-keys-lost. We won't put your car in that position.

Are 2022-2024 X3 keys the same as 2018-2021?

That isn't confirmed. The part and chip are carried over from the earlier listing, and facelifted cars may use a newer fob. We confirm by VIN before quoting.

My X3 says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?

Possibly not. A dead fob coin cell is a listed common cause on the F25 and G-series cars, and on the F25 the emergency start position still works. Call us and describe what the car does.

Can you program a key for a 2025 or 2026 X3?

No. As far as we can establish, that generation is dealer-only, with no aftermarket add-key or all-keys-lost path. We would rather say so up front.

How much does an X3 key cost?

We can't give a number without the VIN, because era, add-a-key versus all-keys-lost, bench work and fob type all move the cost. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will walk through which factors apply to your car.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?

We run mobile service vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Which suits depends on the job; tell us when you call.

We cover all these cities
