The 2011–2017 X3 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW X3 key guide.
2011 BMW X3: key facts

CAS4/CAS4+ car: specialist territory. Add-a-key is possible via OBD with pro tools (VVDI2/Autel/CGDI per tool documentation); all-keys-lost usually means bench-reading the CAS4 module. Not dealer-only, but not a general-purpose-tool job either.
What kind of key does a 2011 X3 use, and what does that mean for you?
The 2011 X3 is a smart-proximity, push-to-start car. The fob talks to the car by radio, so you can leave it in a pocket or bag, press the brake, and push the start button. Inside the fob is an ID49 transponder chip, the PCF7953P, which is part of the Hitag Pro family. That chip data is verified. A fob that has not been programmed to the car will not start it, however well the plastic case matches.
There is also a mechanical backup key. If the fob battery dies or the fob is damaged, you can still open the door with it. Keep it somewhere you can reach, because it is the simplest way back into the car on a bad day.
The most common complaint on this setup is a dead coin cell in the fob. The dash shows a 'key not detected' warning, and the car may refuse a normal start. The emergency start position still works, so a dead battery usually does not mean you need a new key. Try a fresh battery first, since it costs far less than replacing a fob. If the warning continues with a good battery, bring the fob and car in and we will test both.
Some X3s are fitted with Comfort Access, and on those cars the door-handle sensors can fail. That is a car-side problem, not a key problem. A new fob will not fix a handle sensor, so we check which one you have before suggesting any replacement.
Do I need my original key, or can you work from all keys lost?
Neither is a blocker on this year. Our verified data shows an original key is not needed to make a new one, and all-keys-lost is possible. The difference is in the work involved.
With one working fob, we add another over the OBD port using professional programming tools. The tools in this class, such as VVDI2, Autel and CGDI, are documented for this kind of job on this platform. This is called add-a-key, and it is the more economical route compared with starting from nothing.
If every key is gone, the job is bigger. The X3 of this year has a CAS4 or CAS4+ immobilizer module, and all-keys-lost usually means reading that module on the bench. This is specialist work. It is not dealer-only, but it is not a job for a general-purpose tool either.
- One working fob: add-a-key over OBD, usually the lighter-cost option.
- No working fob: module data is read, a new fob is prepared and programmed, and the car is cleared to start.
- Dead battery only: replace the coin cell and test before anything else.

Call (213) 577-1366How we handle a 2011 X3 key job
We keep the process simple and tell you what we find at each stage.
- Call (213) 577-1366. Tell us the year, model, and how many working fobs you have. The line is answered around the clock.
- We confirm the car by VIN, including which CAS module it has and whether it has Comfort Access.
- We come to you with a mobile van, or you bring the car to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- We program the new fob over OBD. If all keys are lost, we read the CAS module first.
- We test everything: push-to-start, door entry, the mechanical backup key, and any fobs you already had.
What affects the price of a 2011 X3 fob?
We will not quote a number before we know your situation, and neither should anyone else working over the phone. These are the factors that move the cost:
Lost-fob replacement on this car costs more than keys for the older E-series BMWs. The fob and the module work are the reason, not the labor alone.
- Add-a-key or all-keys-lost. Bench-reading a CAS4 module is more involved than programming from a working key.
- Whether you need one fob or several. A spare made now costs less than an emergency later.
- The fob itself, and whether the mechanical backup key also needs cutting.
- Where the job happens. A mobile visit and a drop-off at the shop involve different logistics.
- Whether the real fault is a battery or handle sensor, which would mean no new fob at all.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
The chip family and programming method above are verified for this year. Even so, BMW built variations within a model year, so we confirm the exact module and fob by VIN or in person before we order or cut anything. We would rather say that plainly than guess.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We have a storefront and mobile vans, and one company handles your call from start to finish with no dispatch middlemen. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for theirs before they touch your car.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2011 BMW X3 key without the original?
Yes. An original key is not required, and all-keys-lost is possible. With no working fob, the CAS module usually has to be read on the bench, so the job is more involved than add-a-key.
Why does my X3 say 'key not detected'?
The usual cause is a dead coin cell in the fob. The emergency start position still works, so replace the battery first. If the warning continues with a fresh cell, bring the car and fob in for testing.
Is this a dealer-only job?
No. The 2011 X3 is not dealer-only. It is specialist work because of the CAS4 or CAS4+ module, but professional tools can program keys over OBD.
Do I need a special NASTF credential for this car?
According to our data, NASTF SDRM is not required for programming this year. We still confirm the specifics of your car by VIN before starting.
Does the X3 have a physical backup key?
Yes. The smart fob carries a mechanical backup key that opens the door if the fob battery is dead. Keep it accessible, not locked in the car.
Will a new fob fix my Comfort Access door handle?
No. Door-handle sensor faults on Comfort Access cars are a separate problem from the key. We check which one you have before recommending a fob.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the X3 in?
Either. Our mobile vans cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.
