The 2018–2024 X3 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW X3 key guide.

G-chassis BDC2 car: add-a-key is possible for specialists with a working key (Autel BDC02 licenses; Xhorse's BDC2 bench adapter explicitly cannot do all-keys-lost). True all-keys-lost is dealer territory on these cars — the one advertised aftermarket AKL route (Yanhua ACDP) carries the vendor's own warning that it locks the BDC2 against future dealer keys, so we do not offer it.
What kind of key does a 2018 BMW X3 use?
The 2018 X3 is a smart-key, push-to-start car. You carry the fob, the car detects it, and you press the start button. The fob contains an ID49 transponder chip (PCF7953P, the Hitag Pro family), which we have verified against hardware references. This is not a metal key you turn in the ignition, and it is not a simple chip that can be cloned on a bench in a few minutes.
Hidden inside the fob is a mechanical backup key. That matters more than people think. If the coin cell inside the fob dies, the car may show a 'key not detected' warning, but the backup blade still lets you get into the vehicle, and the car has a way to read a weak fob when it is held in the right spot. A dead battery is the most common complaint on this setup, and it is often mistaken for a failed fob.
- Key type: smart proximity fob with push-to-start
- Chip family: ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro)
- Programming method: through the OBD port
- Mechanical backup key: yes, built into the fob
Can you copy a 2018 X3 key, or only replace a lost one?
This is where owners need straight talk. On this car, duplication requires an original key. If you have one working fob, we can add another. The X3 from this period is a G-chassis car with a BDC2 body control module, and adding a key to it is possible for specialists who have a working key in hand and the right licensed software and tools.
True all-keys-lost is a different situation. On a 2018 X3 it is dealer territory, and we do not offer it. There is one aftermarket route advertised for this module, but the tool vendor's own documentation warns that it can lock the BDC2 against future dealer-issued keys. We are not willing to risk leaving your car in a state where the dealer cannot help you later. We would rather tell you that up front than start work we should not do.
The practical lesson is simple. If you are down to one fob, get a spare made now, while the add-a-key route is open. Once the last key is gone, your options narrow and the process gets slower.
How we handle a spare or replacement key step by step
When you call, we ask what you have in hand, because that decides the path. Here is how a typical add-a-key job runs.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, the model, and whether you have at least one working fob. Give us the VIN if you can.
- We confirm by VIN that your car matches the setup described here, since equipment can vary from car to car.
- If you have a working key, we meet you with a mobile van or you come to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- We program the new fob to the car through the OBD port, then test starting, locking, and the proximity detection.
- We check that the mechanical backup blade is present and working, and we replace the coin cell if that was the real problem.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2018 X3 key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your situation. Replacing a BMW smart fob is not a lightweight job, and lost-fob replacement is known to be costly and often involves the dealer. These are the things that move the cost:
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car that still has one is a very different job from a total loss, and the dealer-only case is a different path entirely.
- The fob itself. The hardware is a major part of the cost, and the correct part depends on your car's exact build.
- Programming access and software. Specialist tool licenses for the BDC2 are part of what we bring to an add-a-key job.
- Where you are. Our mobile vans come to you across Los Angeles and Ventura counties; coming to our storefront is often the more economical route if the car can reach us.
- Whether the real fault is just a coin cell. If so, you may not need a new key at all.
What we confirm by VIN, and why you should ask for a BSIS license
Two things we do not assume. First, some X3s are equipped with BMW Digital Key, which lets a phone or card act as a key. Enrollment problems on those cars are a known complaint, and whether yours has the feature depends on how it was built, so we check by VIN or in person rather than guess.
Second, any variation in programming requirements on your specific car is something we verify before we commit to a job. If it turns out your car needs the dealer, we will say so rather than take your time.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start work, including us. Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, and David oversees the technical work. We run a storefront and our own vans, so you deal with one company rather than a dispatch middleman. See our other BMW key pages, the X3 overview, or get in touch with your VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2018 BMW X3 key if I lost all my keys?
No. All-keys-lost on this car is dealer territory, and we do not offer it. The one aftermarket route we know of carries the vendor's own warning that it can lock the module against future dealer keys, so we stay away from it.
I have one working fob. What should I do?
Get a spare added now. With a working key, add-a-key through the OBD port is possible. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will confirm your car by VIN first.
My X3 says the key is not detected. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead coin cell in the fob is a common cause of that warning. Use the mechanical backup key to get in, and have the battery replaced before deciding anything else.
Does the 2018 X3 have a hidden metal key?
Yes. The smart fob includes a mechanical backup key for the door, which is useful if the fob battery fails.
What chip does a 2018 X3 key use?
The verified chip family is ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro). That chip alone does not make the key easy to copy, because programming runs through the car's BDC2 module.
Do you come to me, or do I come to you?
Both work. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Does my X3 have BMW Digital Key?
It depends on how the car was equipped. We confirm by VIN or in person instead of assuming. See the BMW key overview for related models.
