The 2004–2010 X3 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW X3 key guide.

EWS system: new keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench (AK90/Abrites EWS3-class tools) or ordered pre-cut by VIN — all-keys-lost is routine specialist work, no working key needed. The E83 kept EWS to the end of production — no CAS, no slot.
What kind of key does a 2004 BMW X3 use?
The 2004 X3 (E83) uses a remote-head key: a metal blade with a plastic head that holds the transponder chip and the remote buttons in one piece. It is not a push-to-start car, so there is no proximity fob and no start button. You turn a physical key in the ignition.
The chip is in the ID44 family (PCF7935), and that detail is verified. Each key also carries a mechanical blade, so there is a physical key to open the door and work the lock even when the remote side has quit. The chip is a separate matter: it is what the car checks before it lets the engine run.
The X3 kept BMW's EWS immobilizer right through the end of production. There is no CAS module and no key slot like you find on later BMWs. That matters because it decides how a new key gets made: from the EWS data, not from a dealer-style slot procedure.
Do I need my old key to get a new one?
No. For this setup the original key is not needed for a duplicate, and an all-keys-lost situation is possible to solve. New keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench using specialist EWS-class tools, or a blade is ordered pre-cut by VIN. Either way, all keys lost is routine specialist work on this vehicle, not an emergency exception.
Programming on this year goes through EEPROM-level data from the EWS system. It does not depend on NASTF or SDRM secure-data access, which is one less hurdle between you and a working key.
Here is how a typical call goes:
- You call (213) 577-1366 and give us the year, model and VIN. The VIN is visible at the base of the windshield or on your registration.
- We confirm the key setup for your car by VIN before anything is ordered or cut.
- The blade is cut to match, either by VIN code or from a pre-cut blank ordered by VIN.
- We read the EWS module data and originate the new key from it, so the car recognizes it.
- We test the door, the remote buttons and the ignition start, and check any other keys you still have.
What goes wrong with these keys?
Most calls on this year come down to one of three things, and they are not all the same repair:
- A dead rechargeable remote battery. The buttons stop working, but the chip is fine and the key still starts the car. This is a different fix from replacing the whole key.
- Worn HU-series key blades and cracked key shells. A rounded blade can stick or fail in the ignition or door, and a cracked shell can leave the key head in pieces.
- An EWS immobilizer no-start. The key turns but the engine does not crank, which can come from a key and module sync fault.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2004 X3 key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. These are the factors that move it:
Whether you have a working key. Making a spare while one key still works is generally the more economical route compared with all keys lost, simply because less bench work is involved.
Whether the blade is cut on site or ordered pre-cut by VIN, and whether you need the remote buttons working or only the ability to start the car.
Whether the problem is a battery or shell, which is a lighter job, or a full key origination from the EWS data. Where you are and when you call also play a part, since a mobile van trip differs from a visit to our shop.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start work, and ask for the price in full before anyone touches your car.
What do we confirm by VIN, and why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
The data we hold for the 2004 X3 is verified, but we still confirm by VIN and in person before we order or cut anything. Blades and shells are ordered by VIN, and we would rather check the car than assume. If anything on your vehicle does not match what we expect, we will tell you plainly.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024 in Westwood, plus mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You reach one company, not a dispatch middleman, and the owner and lead technician, David, oversees the work. Phones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2004 BMW X3 key if I lost every key?
Yes. All keys lost is possible on this year and is routine specialist work. We originate a new key from the EWS module data on the bench or order a blade pre-cut by VIN. No working key is needed.
Is the 2004 X3 a push-to-start car?
No. It uses a remote-head key that you turn in the ignition. There is no proximity fob or start button on this model year.
What transponder chip does the 2004 BMW X3 use?
The verified chip family is ID44 (PCF7935). The car's EWS immobilizer checks that chip before it allows the engine to run.
My remote buttons stopped working but the car still starts. Do I need a new key?
Often not. The remote in these keys runs on a rechargeable battery, and when it dies the buttons stop while the chip keeps working. That is a different and lighter job than replacing the whole key. We check the key to confirm.
My X3 key turns but the engine won't crank. What is going on?
That pattern points to the EWS immobilizer, often a key and module sync fault. We confirm on the car rather than guess, since a no-crank can have other causes.
Do you need special dealer access to program this key?
No. On this year the programming method is EEPROM-based from EWS data, and NASTF or SDRM secure-data access is not required.
Do I have to bring the car to your shop?
Not necessarily. We have a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans, so we can come to the car. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation. You can also browse all of our car key services.
