What do Lexus owners in Burbank usually need?

Most Lexus calls from Burbank fall into a handful of patterns, and they follow how people here actually live, work and park. Someone flies out of Hollywood Burbank Airport, comes back days later, and the car says 'key not detected' because the fob battery gave out while they were away. Someone in one of the large controlled-access apartment complexes near Downtown Burbank or the Chandler Bikeway is locked out in a garage where no one else holds a spare. Someone working in the Media District realizes the only fob is in a jacket back at the office. And someone parked along Magnolia Boulevard or San Fernando Boulevard comes back to a blade that has worn down and no longer turns the lock.

Lexus is Toyota's luxury line, and the range of key technology on the road is wide. A 2003 sedan with a bladed transponder key is a very different job from a 2024 SUV with a server-authenticated smart key. So the first thing we ask on the phone is always the same: what year, what model, does it start with a button or a key, and do you still have any working key at all. Those answers decide what we bring and what we can honestly promise you about the job.

The requests we see most often from Burbank drivers:

  • A spare smart fob made, because the only one is failing or already lost
  • A dead fob battery that has left the car unable to detect the key
  • A worn or chipped blade on an older Lexus that sticks in the ignition or no longer turns the locks
  • A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine
  • A cracked fob shell, broken buttons or a water-damaged board
  • All keys lost, with no working key to copy from

How does mobile Lexus key service work at the curb?

We run mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Burbank is roughly 16 miles from that base. The point of a mobile job is that you never have to tow the car or arrange a ride to a dealer. The work happens where the Lexus is parked, whether that is an apartment garage, an office lot, a driveway or a street space.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. We ask for the year, model, trim, whether the car has push-button start, and whether you have any working key.
  2. Tell us exactly where the car is. Garages with gate or fob access sometimes need a little coordination, so mention that up front.
  3. Before any work starts, we verify that the car is yours. Expect to show a photo ID and registration or title that matches the vehicle.
  4. We identify the key system from the VIN and the key itself. This is where we confirm whether your exact year and model is something we can do in the field.
  5. If you are locked out, we open the car first. See our Burbank car lockout service for how that works.
  6. We cut the emergency blade or the full key where one is needed, then program the new key or fob to the car through the OBD-II port with professional equipment.
  7. We test everything before we leave: door lock and unlock, trunk, push-button or ignition start, and any spare you had made.

What kind of Lexus key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Lexus follows Toyota's chip technology but adopted smart keys earlier than most brands. Here is how the progression breaks down, in plain terms. Exact changeover years vary by model, which is why we check your specific year rather than guess from a general timeline.

Late 1990s to roughly 2005: fixed-code transponder keys using a Texas 4C chip, on laser-cut blades. These came in a longer style and then a shorter one. They are the simplest Lexus keys to deal with.

2001 to 2009 on models such as the LS430, GX470, ES330 and RX330/RX350: the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip, in a short high-security style key. Still a bladed key, but with a more secure chip inside.

Roughly 2006 to 2012, arriving model by model: the first push-button SmartAccess systems. The IS got it in 2006, the ES and LS in 2007, and the RX and GX in 2010. These fobs are a different animal from the bladed keys that came before them.

2010 to 2017 on the RX, GX and LS: a newer generation of smart fob built on a stronger chip platform than the first-generation fobs.

From 2013: 128-bit smart keys, sold under several fob part families. Adding a key on these is generally straightforward over the OBD-II port.

2022 and newer on the NX, 2023 and newer on the RX, and the new GX550: the newest smart keys, which are authenticated through a server. These are the hardest to handle, and we cover that honestly below.

Every one of these has an emergency blade hidden in the fob if it is a smart key. If your fob is dead, that blade can still open the door. It will not start the car by itself on a push-button model, though, so the battery or a replacement fob still matters.

What if I've lost every Lexus key?

All keys lost is where the key era matters most, and where we want to be straight with you instead of promising everything.

On 2000s bladed Lexus models with the 4C or 4D-68 chip, all keys lost is routine for a mobile locksmith. We cut a new blade from the car's lock or its key code, then program the chip through the OBD-II port. Toyota's own immobilizer reset path also covers a long span of model years, which gives professional tools a way in.

On first-generation smart-key cars, roughly 2006 to 2012, all keys lost used to mean replacing or resetting the smart ECU, or going to the dealer. Current professional tools can usually reset the smart code through the OBD port, but coverage differs by vehicle, so we confirm it for your car before we promise anything.

On cars from 2013 on, adding a key when you still have a working one is easy over OBD. When every key is gone, we use specialized hardware built for that encryption. It works, but it is a bigger job than a spare.

From about 2020, all keys lost in the US increasingly requires Toyota or Lexus server codes, which means credentialed access or tool-specific authorization. On the newest platforms, the 2022 and newer NX, 2023 and newer RX, 2024 and newer GX550 and the 2026 ES, key registration is server-authenticated. We can do all keys lost on many of these with specialist server-connected equipment, but coverage is still maturing, and some of these jobs remain dealer-only. If yours is one of them, we will say so on the phone, before you wait for a van that cannot finish the job.

If this is your situation, our pages on lost car key replacement in Burbank and general car key replacement in Burbank walk through the process for any make.

Why does my Lexus say 'key not detected'?

Often it is nothing more than a dead battery in the smart fob. The car reports 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door, so you are not stuck outside. A fresh battery solves it in many cases. If a new battery does not help, the fob may have a damaged board, a cracked shell or water damage, and that is when replacement or repair enters the picture. Our key fob replacement service in Burbank covers those cases.

Other common problems we see on Lexus keys:

  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage 2000s models, where the key sticks or stops turning
  • Worn or chipped laser-cut blades that no longer turn the locks even though the chip inside still works
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which open the doors but will not start the engine
  • Cracked fob shells, broken buttons and water-damaged boards

What affects the cost of Lexus key replacement in Burbank?

We do not quote numbers in an article, because the honest answer depends on your car. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down, so the figure we give you on the phone makes sense.

The biggest factor is the key generation. A bladed transponder key on an older Lexus is a far lighter job than a smart fob. Lost-smart-fob replacement costs run well above ordinary bladed keys, especially on 2020 and newer server-authenticated systems, because the key itself, the equipment and the access all cost more.

  • Key type: a bladed transponder key, a first-generation smart fob, a 2013-era smart key or a newest-generation server-authenticated key
  • Whether you have a working key: adding a spare is far simpler than all keys lost
  • Model year and platform: newer systems may need server-connected equipment or special authorization
  • Whether the blade needs cutting, and whether the lock itself is worn
  • Whether the car is locked and needs opening first
  • Where and when: a late-night call or a hard-to-reach location involves more than a daytime job at an easy address
  • Whether the problem is the key at all: sometimes a battery, a shell or a worn ignition is the real cause

Dealer or mobile locksmith: what's the fair comparison?

Both are legitimate routes, and for some Lexus jobs the dealer really is the right answer. Here is how we see it.

A mobile locksmith's main advantages are convenience and the fact that the car does not have to move. If your Lexus will not start, you do not have to arrange a tow. For many bladed keys and 2013-era smart keys, mobile service is also usually the more economical route, since you are not paying for a tow and a trip.

The dealer's main advantage is official access. On some of the newest platforms, coverage for independent tools is still maturing, and some all-keys-lost jobs remain dealer-only. When that applies to your car, going to the dealer is simply the correct move, and we will tell you so instead of sending a van that cannot finish the job.

A fair way to decide: call us with your year and model. If we can do it, we will say so and explain what the job involves. If we cannot, you will know before you spend time waiting. Either way, you get a straight answer.

One more thing worth knowing. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work on your car, including us. That is a reasonable question and any serious company will answer it.

Lexus key help across Burbank neighborhoods and ZIP codes

Burbank covers a lot of different kinds of places, and car key calls look different depending on where you are. We serve all five ZIP codes, 91501, 91502, 91504, 91505 and 91506.

In Downtown Burbank and along the Chandler Bikeway, the large controlled-access apartment complexes mean many lockouts happen in shared garages. If your Lexus is locked inside a gated structure, tell us how we get in and who can open the gate. In the Media District, office and studio-adjacent lots are where we get calls from people who left a fob at their desk or lost it between buildings. Warner Bros. Studios and Walt Disney Studios are nearby, and this is an area where daytime parking turns over constantly.

On Magnolia Park's older streets, you will find 1920s to 1940s bungalows, and a lot of our work there is home hardware rather than cars. Many older homes still carry original mid-century door hardware. The Rancho District has equestrian-zoned single-family lots with long driveways, which is a straightforward situation for a mobile van. In the hillside district above Glenoaks Boulevard in the Verdugo foothills, homes get more sun and wind exposure than the flats, and you may want to leave an extra window for access on a steep street.

Travelers are another regular group. If you have parked at Hollywood Burbank Airport and come back to a fob that will not work, call us and tell us which lot you are in.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Lexus

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. That experience shows up in small ways: we know which key problems are really a worn lock, which are a dead battery, and which need specialist equipment.

We are one company with a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and our own mobile vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who hands the job to a stranger. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If your Lexus is a hard case, such as a newest-generation all-keys-lost, he is the person deciding whether it is something we can do in the field or something that belongs at the dealer.

You can read about the brand more broadly on our Lexus key page, or reach us anytime through our contact page. If you already know your car is stuck, just call.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Lexus smart key in Burbank if I've lost the only one?

Often yes, but it depends on the year. On 2013-era and many earlier cars, we have a clear path with specialist equipment. On the newest platforms, the 2022 and newer NX, 2023 and newer RX and the GX550, we can do many but not all, and some remain dealer-only. We confirm by VIN before committing.

Will a hardware-store copy of my Lexus key start the car?

Not if it has no transponder chip. A plain cut key will usually open the doors but will not start the engine, because the car does not recognize the chip. A proper key has to be cut and programmed to your Lexus.

My Lexus says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not always. A dead fob battery is the most common cause, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob may have a damaged board, a cracked shell or water damage, and we can check which.

Do you come to airport parking at Hollywood Burbank Airport?

Yes, car key replacement for travelers parked there is a service we handle. Tell us which lot or structure you are in and whether you have any working key, and we will work out what we can do on site.

How much does a Lexus key replacement cost?

It depends on the key generation, whether you have a working key, the model year and whether the car is locked. Older bladed keys are a lighter job than smart fobs, and the newest server-authenticated keys cost the most. We give you the figure on the phone once we know your car.

Can all Lexus models be handled without going to the dealer?

Many can, but not all. Most bladed keys and 2013-era smart keys are routine for a mobile locksmith. Some newest-platform all-keys-lost jobs remain dealer-only, and we will tell you if yours is one of them.

Do you need proof that the car is mine?

Yes. We verify ownership before cutting or programming any key, usually with photo ID and registration or title that matches the vehicle. It protects you as much as anyone.

Is the locksmith you send licensed?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work begins. Our license number is being added to the site, and you are welcome to ask us directly on the phone.
