Lexus ES key replacement in Los Angeles

Most Lexus ES keys can be replaced or added by a mobile technician using the OBD port. The big exceptions are 2020-and-newer cars with no working fob, which need manufacturer authorization, and the 2026 redesign. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour, and have your VIN ready.

Which Lexus ES do you have, and why does it matter?

The ES has used several very different kinds of key since 2000, and the model year tells us almost everything about what a replacement involves. A 2001 ES300 uses a chip key with a long blade and a separate remote. A 2005 ES330 uses a different chip and a short high-security blade. From 2007 the ES350 went to push-button start, and the fob technology changed again in 2013 and in 2019. The year-by-year table on this page lists the chip family and fob for each model year. This text explains what those rows mean when you are standing next to a car that will not start.

A few rows in the table are marked unverified, and we would rather say so than guess. Where catalogs disagree or stop short, we confirm the exact setup by VIN before we cut or program anything. If you are not sure of your year, the VIN is the fastest answer. You can send it through our contact page or just call (213) 577-1366.

Wilshire Lock & Key has worked from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd since 1987, with mobile vans for customers who cannot move the car. For the wider picture across brands, see our car key services and our Lexus key page.

What do 2000-2006 ES300 and ES330 owners need?

These are bladed transponder keys, and they are the simplest ES keys we handle. The 2000 and 2001 ES300 uses a 4C chip in a long TOY40 blade, with the remote as a separate piece. For 2002 and 2003 the ES300 keeps the 4C chip but moves to the short laser-cut TOY48 blade. The 2004 to 2006 ES330 changes the chip to 4D-68 on the short high-security TOY50-PT blade.

All of these program through the OBD port, and for the 2004 to 2006 ES330 that includes all-keys-lost. The one caution is on the earliest cars. On a 2000 or 2001, an all-keys-lost job can call for an immobilizer ECU reset rather than a quick OBD add, so we confirm the method by year and VIN before we commit to it.

A key on these cars has two jobs: the blade has to turn the lock, and the chip has to be recognized by the car. A hardware-store copy may turn the ignition and still not start the engine, because it has no transponder. That is the most common surprise in this era.

Age is the other story. Worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars and worn or chipped laser-cut blades are the usual complaints. A key that suddenly stops turning can be a worn key or a worn lock, and it is worth finding out which before replacing anything.

How do 2007-2012 ES350 push-button keys work?

The ES350 made SmartAccess push-button start standard. The fob is the HYQ14AAB. Through 2008 it carries board 0140. For 2009 through 2012 it is the 'E' board 3370 with a DST40 chip. The board letter must match when we replace a fob, which is why we ask for your year and VIN instead of handing over a fob that only looks right.

For 2007 and 2008 we treat the chip as unverified. Catalogs confirm the fob and board number but rarely name the chip, and one catalog lists the 4D-71 smart chip. The first-generation smart system is DST40-based by industry convention, but convention is not confirmation, so we confirm the exact setup by VIN.

All-keys-lost is where this era has a history. On early Lexus smart systems it meant resetting or replacing the smart ECU, or a dealer visit. Current professional tools usually reset the smart code through the OBD port, but coverage is confirmed per vehicle. For 2009 to 2012 that OBD smart-code reset is the method we expect to use, where the older approach needed smart-ECU work or dealer service.

If you still have one working fob, adding a second is the easier job, and it is worth doing before the only fob goes missing.

What changed on the 2013-2018 ES?

The 2013 to 2018 ES moved to the 8A system, a 128-bit DST-AES chip, with the HYQ14FBA fob (G board 0020). The data for these years is verified across the board.

Adding a key over OBD is routine on these cars. All-keys-lost is also possible, using a DST-AES emulator with professional tools. That is a heavier job than an add, but it does not depend on a manufacturer server approval in the data we have, and it is usually something a mobile technician can finish where the car is parked.

In practice, this is the generation where a spare fob is cheap insurance in the sense that matters: the add is the lighter-cost job, and the all-keys-lost job takes more equipment and more time. If you bought the car used with a single fob, this is the window to fix that.

What about 2019-2025 ES owners with the XZ10 generation?

The XZ10 generation brought the HYQ14FBF smart fob with a Texas H-8A chip, still on the 8A system. A HYQ14FBZ variant (board 3410) also appears on 2020 to 2023 cars, so two fobs that look alike are not always interchangeable. Catalog listings we checked cover these fobs through 2023.

The bigger change is on the security side. On 2019 cars, all-keys-lost requirements began tightening, and we confirm them per job. From 2020, US all-keys-lost generally requires Toyota/Lexus server codes, through locksmith-credentialed access (the NASTF VSP program) or tool-specific authorization. Adding a key with a working fob is less restricted.

For 2024 and 2025 the fob listings we checked stop at 2023, so we confirm the exact fob part number by VIN. Same-generation 8A hardware is expected, and server-code authorization applies to all-keys-lost.

We will tell you at the start if your car is one we can complete or one where the dealer is the realistic route. If you have a working fob in a 2020 or newer ES, call before it disappears. That one fob keeps you in the easier category.

What if you drive a 2026 ES?

The 2026 ES is an all-new eighth generation, launched EV-first with a hybrid to follow. Key hardware and aftermarket tool coverage are not yet established, so we cannot tell you what chip it uses or what tools will program it. All-keys-lost may be dealer-only at first.

We will not guess. Call with your VIN, and we will confirm current coverage before we quote anything. If it is a dealer job right now, we will say so.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: how does it differ by era?

Across every year in our data, a working original key makes the job simpler, and all-keys-lost is possible but more involved. Here is how that plays out by era:

  • 2000-2003 ES300: OBD programming. All-keys-lost is possible, though the earliest cars can need an immobilizer ECU reset instead of a quick add.
  • 2004-2006 ES330: OBD programming, including all-keys-lost, on the 4D-68 chip.
  • 2007-2012 ES350: add-a-key from a working fob is the easy path. All-keys-lost usually works through an OBD smart-code reset with professional tools, confirmed per vehicle (and the 2007-2008 chip is unverified).
  • 2013-2018 ES: add-a-key over OBD is routine. All-keys-lost uses a DST-AES emulator.
  • 2019-2025 ES: adding with a working fob is less restricted. All-keys-lost generally needs server-code authorization from 2020 on, and 2019 is confirmed per job.
  • 2026 ES: not yet established. We confirm by VIN.

How do we handle an ES key job, step by step?

Every ES job follows roughly the same path, though what happens in the middle depends on the era.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and give us the year, the VIN, and whether you have any working key or fob.
  2. We identify the key type and, for push-button cars, the exact fob and board so the part matches. Where our data is unverified, we confirm it by VIN before ordering or cutting.
  3. We tell you whether your car is an OBD job we can complete, or one that needs authorization or the dealer.
  4. We come to you in a mobile van, or you bring the car to our Westwood storefront if it can be moved. We ask for proof of ownership, as any reputable locksmith should.
  5. We cut the blade or prepare the fob, program it to the car, and then test everything: starting, door lock and unlock, and the mechanical backup key.

What affects the cost of a Lexus ES key?

We do not publish numbers on a page like this because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the real drivers:

  • The era. A bladed chip key is a smaller job than a smart fob, and a fob costs more to replace than a bladed key.
  • The exact part. On the ES350 the board letter has to match, and on 2020-2023 cars the fob can be the HYQ14FBF or the HYQ14FBZ.
  • Add or all-keys-lost. Adding a spare from a working key is usually the more economical route. All-keys-lost needs extra equipment and sometimes authorization.
  • Authorization. On 2020 and newer cars, all-keys-lost involves server codes, which adds steps.
  • How many keys you want made, and whether the blade needs cutting as well as the fob programming.
  • Where the car is. A mobile call to a parking garage differs from bringing the car in.

What goes wrong with ES keys most often?

The problems in our data split cleanly by era:

  • Worn ignition wafers on high-mileage 2000-2006 cars, and worn or chipped laser-cut blades that stop turning the lock.
  • Non-transponder hardware-store copies on older cars. They look right and will not start the engine.
  • A dead smart-fob battery on 2007 and newer cars. The car reports 'key not detected'. Try a fresh battery first, and call us if the message continues.
  • Lost-fob replacement, which is costlier than replacing a bladed key.
  • Water-damaged or crushed fobs, which often need replacing instead of repair.

When should you call us, and when should you go to the dealer?

Call us for most 2000 to 2018 ES jobs, for spare keys on any year, and any time the car is stuck somewhere and cannot be driven. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You get one company, not a dispatcher passing your job along, and David oversees the work.

The dealer may be the better route for a 2026 ES while tool coverage is unsettled, or for a 2020 or newer car with no working fob if the authorization we need is not available for your VIN. We will tell you honestly if that is the case, and you can start at our contact page or go back to our home page to learn more about us.

One practical point: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith, us included, for it before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Lexus ES key if I lost every key?

In most years, yes. The 2004 to 2006 ES330 is OBD-programmable including all-keys-lost, and 2013 to 2018 cars use a DST-AES emulator. The earliest cars, 2007-2008 smart systems, 2020 and newer, and the 2026 car each have caveats we confirm by VIN.

Will a hardware-store copy start an older ES?

No. The 2000 to 2006 ES uses a chip family (4C or 4D-68) that the car must recognize. A plain copy may turn the lock but will not start the engine.

How do I know which fob my ES350 needs?

The HYQ14AAB has different boards by year: 0140 through 2008 and the 'E' board 3370 for 2009 to 2012. The board letter has to match, so we confirm by year and VIN.

Does a 2020 or newer ES have to go to the dealer?

Not always. Adding a key with a working fob is less restricted. All-keys-lost generally requires Toyota/Lexus server codes through credentialed access or tool-specific authorization, and we tell you up front whether we can complete it.

Can you program a key for a 2026 ES?

We cannot promise it yet. The 2026 ES is all new, and key hardware and aftermarket tool coverage are not established. All-keys-lost may be dealer-only at first. Call with your VIN and we will confirm current coverage.

Should I add a spare fob before I lose mine?

Yes. On nearly every year, adding from a working key is the more economical route compared with all-keys-lost, and on 2020 and newer cars it avoids the authorization steps.

Does the car need to be with you for programming?

Yes, since programming goes through the OBD port. Our mobile vans come to you, or you can bring the car to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.

What should I ask a locksmith before they start?

Ask for their BSIS LCO license, which California requires of locksmith companies, and ask how they will handle your specific year. A real answer mentions your chip or fob, not a generic promise.
