Which Lexus IS key do you actually have?
The IS has been sold in the US across four key eras, and they have little in common. The first-generation IS300 uses a bladed transponder key. Everything from the 2006 IS250 and IS350 onward uses a push-button smart fob. Inside that smart era there are three different fob families and more than one chip generation, so 'a key for my IS' is not enough for us to order or cut anything.
Your model year is the starting point and your VIN settles the rest. Where the table on this page marks a year as verified, the chip and fob are confirmed in the sources we use. Where it marks a year as unverified, we say so and check the car itself before promising a fob. We have worked on vehicles since 1987, and the habit is the same on an IS as on anything else: identify the exact system first, then talk about the job.
- 2001-2005 (XE10, IS300): 4C transponder chip on a short laser-cut TOY48 blade.
- 2006-2013 (XE20, IS250/IS350): SmartAccess push-button start, HYQ14AAB fob.
- 2014-2020 (XE30): 8A (DST-AES) smart system, HYQ14FBA fob.
- 2021-2026 (facelifted XE30, IS 500 added 2022): HYQ14FLB fob confirmed for 2021-2022; later years confirmed by VIN.
What do 2001-2005 IS300 owners need?
The IS300 is the only IS with a traditional key. It has a 4C chip in the head and a short laser-cut TOY48 blade, with a mechanical backup key available. The chip has to be programmed to the car, which means a hardware-store copy will turn the lock but will not start the engine. We see that mistake often on older cars, where someone cut a cheap blade and assumed it was finished.
Most IS300 keys are now twenty years old or more, so wear matters. A worn or chipped blade can stop turning the lock, and worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars cause the same symptom. Sometimes the problem is the cylinder, not the key, and we will tell you which before we cut anything new.
If you still have a working key, adding a spare is a straightforward OBD programming job. If every key is gone, the earliest cars can be different: all-keys-lost on these years can require an immobilizer ECU reset rather than a quick OBD add. We confirm that by year and VIN, and we tell you before we start whether your car falls on the easy side or the harder side.
What do 2006-2013 IS250 and IS350 owners need?
The 2006 redesign brought SmartAccess push-button start as standard, using the HYQ14AAB fob. There are two sub-eras. Through 2008 the fob carries board 0140. From 2009 through 2013 it carries the 'E' board 3370 with a DST40 chip. The board letter must match when a fob is replaced, which is why we check the existing fob or the VIN before ordering. A fob that looks identical but carries the wrong board will not pair.
For 2009-2013 the DST40 chip is verified. For 2006-2008 we leave the chip unverified on purpose. Catalogs confirm the HYQ14AAB fob and board 0140, but they rarely name the chip, and one lists a 4D-71 smart chip. The first-generation smart system is DST40-based by industry convention, but we do not state that as fact. For those three years we confirm the exact setup by VIN.
The IS F (2008-2014) and the IS C convertible (2010-2015) share the IS name, but we match fobs by VIN for those as well rather than assuming they follow the sedan year-for-year.

Call (213) 577-1366What do 2014-2020 IS owners need?
The XE30 generation moved to the 8A (128-bit DST-AES) smart system with the HYQ14FBA fob, AG board, part number 89904-53651. This is a verified setup for 2014 through 2020. Adding a key over OBD is routine when you have a working fob. If every fob is lost, the job uses a DST-AES emulator with professional tools.
2020 is the year where the rules change. From 2020, US all-keys-lost work generally requires Toyota/Lexus server codes through locksmith-credentialed NASTF VSP access or tool-specific authorization. Adding a key with a working fob in hand is less restricted. So a 2019 IS and a 2020 IS use the same fob and chip, but losing every key is a very different day on each.
What about 2021-2026, including the IS 500?
The facelifted XE30 continues through 2026, and the IS 500 joined in 2022. For 2021 and 2022 the HYQ14FLB fob (Texas H-8A chip, part number 89904-53E70) is confirmed. All-keys-lost on these years generally requires server-code authorization.
For 2023 through 2026 we are straightforward about what we do not know. The platform continues, but the fob catalog listings we checked end at 2022. The exact fob and the current all-keys-lost coverage are confirmed by VIN. If you own one of these, call with your VIN in hand and we will tell you what the car needs before you commit to anything. In some cases the honest answer may be that the dealer is the practical route; we would rather say that than start a job we cannot finish.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what is the difference?
Every year of the IS in our data requires an original key for a straightforward duplicate, and every year allows all-keys-lost recovery in principle. In practice the two situations are separate jobs.
A duplicate means you have at least one working key or fob. The car is read, a new fob or key is cut and programmed, and the existing key keeps working. This is the lighter-cost route and the less stressful one, and it is the best reason to add a spare before you need it.
All keys lost means nothing in your hand can start the car, so the system has to be reset or authorized from the car side. That is more involved on every era of the IS, and the method changes by year.
- 2001-2005: possible, but the earliest cars can require an immobilizer ECU reset instead of a quick OBD add.
- 2006-2013: current professional tools usually reset the smart code over OBD. Older methods meant smart-ECU work or a dealer visit. For 2006-2008, coverage is confirmed per vehicle.
- 2014-2019: DST-AES emulator with professional tools.
- 2020 and newer: server-code authorization generally required.

Call (213) 577-1366Is IS key programming OBD or dealer-only?
For every year in our data, the programming method is through the OBD port, and the car does not need to go to a dealer to accept a new key. That covers the IS300 through the facelifted cars. What changes is who can reach the programming function.
Through 2019, professional locksmith tools handle both add-a-key and all-keys-lost without manufacturer server access. From 2020, all-keys-lost generally needs Toyota/Lexus server codes, which means authorized access or tool-specific authorization. If that route is not available for your VIN, the dealer is the realistic option, and we will tell you plainly rather than string you along.
That is why we ask for your year and VIN on the first call. It lets us say, before anyone drives anywhere, whether this is an on-site job, a job for our Westwood shop, or one where the dealer is the right answer.
What affects the cost of a Lexus IS key replacement?
We do not quote numbers in a web page because the same model year can land in very different places. These are the things that move the cost:
- Era: a bladed IS300 key is a different job from a smart fob, and the fob itself costs more than a bladed key.
- Duplicate or all-keys-lost: adding to a working key is the more economical route. Starting from nothing takes more time and tooling.
- Authorization: 2020 and newer all-keys-lost work involves server-code access, and that adds a step.
- Fob match: the right board and part number for your year, such as board 'E' 3370 on 2009-2013 cars, so the correct part has to be sourced.
- Condition of the car: a worn ignition on an older IS300 may need work beyond the key.
- Where the job happens: our mobile vans come to you, or you can bring the car to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.
What commonly goes wrong with IS keys?
The problems in our data fall into a few patterns, and they line up with the eras.
On the IS300, expect worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars, a worn or chipped laser-cut blade that stops turning the lock, and non-transponder hardware-store copies that open the door but will not start the car.
On every smart-fob IS from 2006 on, the common issues are a dead fob battery, where the car reports 'key not detected', and water-damaged or crushed fobs. A dead battery is the first thing to rule out. Every IS fob carries a mechanical backup key, so you can usually get into the car and sort out the battery before assuming the fob has failed.
The other point worth knowing: replacing a lost smart fob costs more than replacing a bladed key. That is simply the difference in hardware and programming, and it is one more reason to make a spare while you still have a working fob.

Call (213) 577-1366When should you call us instead of the dealer?
Call us when you want a replacement or spare programmed at your location or at our shop, when you lost your only key and want to know your options, or when you want a straight answer on whether your specific IS needs dealer involvement. Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile service vans. You deal with one company, with no dispatch middlemen, and David oversees the work.
The dealer makes sense in a narrow set of cases: a 2023-2026 IS where the fob and authorization path are not available to us for your VIN, or a car with a deeper electronics fault beyond the key. We will say so if that is your situation.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they touch your car. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock, every day of the year. Have your year, VIN and the number of working fobs ready. You can also reach us through our contact page, browse all car key services, see our Lexus key coverage, or start from our home page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Lexus IS key if I lost all of them?
In principle yes, for every year in our data. The method depends on the era. IS300 cars may need an immobilizer ECU reset on the earliest years, 2006-2019 cars use professional OBD tools, and 2020 and newer generally need Toyota/Lexus server-code authorization. We confirm by VIN before starting.
Will a hardware-store copy start my IS300?
No. The IS300 has a 4C transponder chip, and a plain blade copy will turn the lock but will not start the car. The key has to be chip-equipped and programmed to the car.
Why does the fob board letter matter on a 2009-2013 IS?
Those cars use the HYQ14AAB 'E' board 3370 fob with a DST40 chip. The board letter must match when replacing a fob, so we check your existing fob or your VIN before ordering the part.
Is the chip on a 2006-2008 IS250 or IS350 verified?
No, and we say so. Catalogs confirm the HYQ14AAB fob with board 0140, but they rarely name the chip. It is DST40-based by industry convention, yet we leave it unverified and confirm the exact setup by VIN.
Does a 2020 IS need dealer programming?
Not necessarily. Adding a key with a working fob is less restricted. All-keys-lost from 2020 generally requires Toyota/Lexus server codes through authorized access or tool-specific authorization, and we confirm whether that route is open for your VIN.
What fob does a 2023-2026 IS use?
The facelifted platform continues, and 2021-2022 cars use the HYQ14FLB fob. The fob listings we checked end at 2022, so for 2023 through 2026 the exact fob and all-keys-lost coverage are confirmed by VIN.
My IS says 'key not detected'. Is the fob broken?
Often it is just a dead battery, which is the most common complaint on smart-fob IS models. Use the mechanical backup key in the fob to get into the car, and replace the battery first. Water damage or a crushed fob is the next thing we check.
How do I get the cost of a replacement IS key?
Call (213) 577-1366 with your year, VIN and the number of working fobs. Cost depends on the era, whether you have a working key, whether authorization is needed, and where the job takes place, so we explain those factors on the call.
