Lexus NX key replacement in Los Angeles

Lexus NX smart keys (2015–2024) program through the OBD port; 2025–2026 we confirm by VIN. With a working fob, adding a spare is routine. All keys lost is harder: 2020 and newer need server authorization, 2022 and newer need specialist online programming or the dealer. Call (213) 577-1366.

Which Lexus NX do you have: first or second generation?

The NX has two key eras, and they behave differently when something goes wrong. The first generation, internal code AZ10, runs 2015 through 2021 and covers the NX200t, NX300 and NX300h. The second generation, AZ20, starts in 2022 and runs through 2026. Every model year in both eras uses push-button start with a proximity smart key, and every one has a mechanical backup key hidden inside the fob.

That shared design is why people assume all NX keys are alike. They are not. The fob hardware changed in 2022, and the rules about who can program a replacement tightened in 2020, partway through the first generation. So the model year on your registration matters more than the badge on the trunk.

If you are not sure which era your car belongs to, the VIN settles it, and we are glad to check it with you over the phone before anyone drives anywhere. The year-by-year table on this page lays out each model year; the sections below explain what those rows mean for a real owner standing next to a car that will not start.

If you drive a different Lexus, our Lexus key replacement page covers the rest of the lineup, and the main car keys section covers other makes.

What do 2015–2021 NX owners actually need?

The first-generation NX uses the HYQ14FBA smart fob, built on what the trade calls an AG board 2110, with an 8A chip. That chip family is 128-bit DST-AES encryption. It is a real step up from older transponder keys that a basic key machine could copy in a minute. A fob for this car is a small computer, not a cut piece of metal.

If you still have one working fob and want a spare, this is the easy case. Adding a key over the OBD port is routine on these years. If you have lost every fob, it is still possible. On 2015 through 2019 models, the all-keys-lost job uses a DST-AES emulator with professional tools, and we can talk you through that on the phone.

2020 and 2021 sit in the middle. The fob is the same HYQ14FBA and the chip is the same, but from 2020 US all-keys-lost work generally requires Toyota and Lexus server codes. Those come either through locksmith-credentialed NASTF VSP access or through tool-specific authorization. Adding a key when you have a working fob is less restricted.

In plain terms, a 2021 NX with one good fob and a 2021 NX with none are very different afternoons. One is a quick programming visit. The other depends on authorization and equipment, and we will tell you where your car lands once we have the VIN.

What do 2022–2026 NX owners need?

The redesigned NX moved to the 'B9' DST-AES smart key, still in the 8A family. Two fob part numbers are in play: the HYQ14FLC on 315 MHz and the HYQ14FLD on 434 MHz. They are matched per vehicle, so you cannot simply buy whichever one looks right online. A fob with the wrong frequency or part number will not work, no matter how convincing the case and buttons look.

Duplicating from a working key is the manageable route. All keys lost is the hard one. These cars need server-authenticated specialist programming, using a tool such as the Abrites TN016 over an online connection, or they need the dealer. Not every shop is set up for that yet, and we would rather say so than promise it blindly. When you call, we will tell you whether your situation is one we can complete or one you are better off taking to Lexus.

2025 and 2026 deserve a note of caution. HYQ14FLD fob listings run through 2026, but we did not find the chip named for those two years, and we do not have a confirmed programming method for them. Same-generation hardware is expected, and all keys lost is expected to stay server-authenticated specialist or dealer work. We confirm the exact setup by VIN rather than assume.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what is the difference?

Across every NX year in our data, a duplicate requires an original key, and all keys lost is possible. Those two facts hide a large gap in effort. Here is how the cases break down by era:

  • Duplicate or add-a-key, any year: you give us a working fob and we program an additional one to the car. This is the less restricted path in every era, though we still confirm the fob part number by VIN.
  • All keys lost, 2015–2019: possible with a DST-AES emulator and professional tools.
  • All keys lost, 2020–2021: generally needs Toyota and Lexus server codes through NASTF VSP access, or tool-specific authorization.
  • All keys lost, 2022–2024: needs server-authenticated specialist programming over an online connection, or the dealer.
  • All keys lost, 2025–2026: expected to follow the 2022–2024 process, but unverified, so we confirm by VIN.

Is NX key programming OBD work or dealer-only?

For 2015 through 2024, the programming method in our data is OBD. A tool plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash and talks to the car's immobilizer. That is the reassuring part. The less reassuring part is that OBD access alone does not decide the outcome. From 2020 on, manufacturer authorization sits behind that connection, which is what the NASTF requirement flag in our data means. For 2025 and 2026, the programming method is listed as unknown and the authorization requirement is unconfirmed, so we will not claim more than we know.

The honest summary is this. With a working fob in hand, an NX is generally a locksmith job in every era. With no fob on a 2015–2019 car, it is a locksmith job with the right tools. With no fob on a 2020 or newer car, it depends on authorization and equipment, and on 2022 and newer it may end up at the dealer.

One more point worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith to show you theirs before work starts, and that includes us. A company that hesitates on that question is telling you something.

How does an NX key replacement work with us?

We keep the process simple and we tell you the answer to the dealer-or-us question early, before anyone spends your time.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us the model year, whether any fob still works, and where the car is parked.
  2. We confirm the generation and fob by VIN, including the 315 MHz or 434 MHz version on 2022 and newer cars.
  3. We tell you plainly which kind of job it is: add-a-key, an emulator job, an authorization-dependent job, or one that belongs at the dealer.
  4. You show proof that the car is yours, which any reputable locksmith should ask for on a vehicle key.
  5. We program the fob through the OBD port where the car allows it, then test push-to-start, the lock and unlock buttons, and the mechanical backup key.
  6. You leave with every fob working, and we tell you what to do about the batteries so you do not repeat the call.

What affects the cost of a Lexus NX key replacement?

We will not quote a number on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car and your situation. These are the factors that actually move the price:

  • Whether you have a working fob. Adding a key is a lighter job than starting from zero.
  • Model year and era. All keys lost on 2020 and newer involves authorization steps that earlier cars do not need, and 2022 and newer adds specialist online programming.
  • The fob itself. Smart fobs cost more than bladed keys, and the HYQ14FLC and HYQ14FLD versions have to match the vehicle.
  • Where the car is. A mobile van visit to your location is priced differently from bringing the car or fob to our Westwood storefront.
  • Time of day. Late-night calls are real work for a real technician.
  • How many fobs you want. A spare made during the same visit is usually the more economical route compared with a second call later.

What goes wrong with NX keys most often?

Our data lists three recurring problems across every model year, and they match what owners tend to describe.

Dead fob battery. The car reports 'key not detected' and will not start, even though the fob is in your pocket. A fresh battery often fixes it, and the mechanical backup key inside the fob will still open the door. If the message persists after a new battery, the fob itself may be failing, and that is a replacement conversation.

Costly lost-fob replacement. Because these are smart keys, a lost fob costs more to replace than a bladed key ever did. That is another reason to make a spare while you still have a working one, since a duplicate is a far easier job than all keys lost.

Water-damaged or crushed fobs. Fobs go through washing machines, pools and car doors. A damaged board often cannot be saved, and a replacement then has to be programmed to the car like any other new fob.

None of these needs a tow if the car is parked at home or work. Our mobile vans come to you, and we can start with a phone call.

When should you call us, and when the dealer?

Call us when you have a working fob and want a spare, when a fob is dead, damaged or lost on a 2015–2021 NX, or when you simply want to understand your options before committing. We have worked since 1987, we run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You deal with one company, with no dispatch middleman between you and the person who shows up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

Consider the dealer when you have lost every key on a 2022 or newer NX and we tell you, after checking the VIN, that the job needs authorization we cannot complete. We will say so directly. Sending you to the right place is better than a half-finished visit.

For 2025 and 2026 cars, call first. Our data on those years is incomplete, and a short VIN check beats a wasted trip. You can reach us at (213) 577-1366 or through our contact page, and you can learn more about who we are on our home page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Lexus NX key if I have lost every fob?

On 2015–2019 models, yes, using a DST-AES emulator with professional tools. On 2020 and newer it generally requires server authorization, and on 2022 and newer it needs specialist online programming or the dealer. We confirm by VIN and tell you honestly which route applies.

Do I need the dealer for a 2022 or newer NX?

Not always. If you have a working fob, adding a key is the less restricted route. If all keys are lost, these cars need server-authenticated specialist programming or the dealer, and not every shop can do that yet. We tell you up front whether we can.

Can a hardware store key machine copy an NX key?

No. The NX smart fob uses DST-AES encryption, and the fob must be programmed to the car. Our data also shows an original key is needed for duplication. A cut blade alone will not start the car, though the mechanical backup key can open the door.

My NX says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?

Usually the fob battery is dead. Replace it first. The mechanical backup key inside the fob will still open the door in the meantime. If the message continues with a fresh battery, the fob may be damaged, and a replacement is the next step.

How do I know which replacement fob my second-generation NX takes?

Second-generation NX fobs come as HYQ14FLC (315 MHz) or HYQ14FLD (434 MHz), matched per vehicle. Buying the wrong one wastes money. Give us your VIN and we confirm the correct part before anything is ordered or programmed.

Is the 2025 or 2026 NX key the same as the 2022–2024 key?

Probably, but it is unverified. HYQ14FLD fob listings run through 2026, yet we did not find the chip named for those years, and the programming method is unconfirmed. Same-generation hardware is expected, and we confirm the exact setup by VIN.

Is it worth making a spare NX key before I lose the last one?

Yes. Adding a key with a working fob is the least restricted job in every era. Losing every fob moves you into server-authorization or specialist territory on 2020 and newer cars, which takes more effort and cost.

Will you come to my car, or do I need to bring it in?

Both work. We run mobile service vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. If the car will not start or you have no fob to drive with, a mobile visit saves you a tow. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.
