What makes a lock high security?
A standard builder-grade cylinder is made to keep honest people honest. It has loose tolerances, plain pins, and a keyway that any hardware store can cut a key for. A high security lock is built differently, and the differences are specific rather than a matter of branding.
In practice, a high security cylinder combines several features. The machining is tighter, so the pins sit where they should and are hard to manipulate. Security pins such as spools and serrated drivers fight a pick. Hardened inserts resist drilling. A second locking element, such as a sidebar or a rotating disc, has to be satisfied along with the pins. And the keyway is restricted, meaning the key blank is controlled and cannot simply be cut at a kiosk. Not every product has every feature, and we will tell you which feature does what before you buy.
One honest note up front: no lock is pick-proof. What high security hardware does is raise the skill, time and noise needed to defeat it, and it shuts off the quick, cheap methods like bumping and casual picking. It also only works as part of a door that holds together. A strong cylinder in a weak frame is still a weak door, so we look at the strike, the frame and the hinges, not just the cylinder.
Why do Agua Dulce properties need more than a stock lock?
Agua Dulce is made up almost entirely of rural ranchettes and custom single-family homes on multi-acre parcels, much of it built from the 1970s onward. Horse facilities, driveway gates, barns and outbuildings are standard features, and there is effectively no apartment or condo stock. That means nearly every property here has a long list of locks, not just one front door.
That changes the security picture. Neighbors are not close by, and a lock on a tack room, workshop or barn may sit a long way from the main house and out of sight. The original hardware on a 1970s or 1980s custom home may also have passed through many hands over the decades: previous owners, contractors, ranch hands, boarders, trainers. Often nobody can say how many keys exist or where they ended up.
Restricted-key high security locks answer that problem directly. When the key blank is controlled, copies are made only through an authorization process, so you decide who can order one. That is a different kind of protection than a stronger pin alone, and for a multi-building property it is often the more valuable half of the upgrade.
Typical reasons Agua Dulce owners look at high security hardware include taking over a property with unknown key history, replacing worn cylinders that no longer turn cleanly, protecting equipment, tack or tools stored away from the house, and wanting one controlled key system across several buildings.

Call (213) 577-1366How does a high security lock installation work, step by step?
Most high security work can be done at your property in one visit from one of our mobile vans. The one exception is restricted-key orders: depending on the system, keys may have to be ordered through the manufacturer's authorization process, and we will tell you if that applies so you are not surprised by the timing.
- Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us which doors, gates and outbuildings are involved, what hardware is there now if you know, and whether any keys are lost or unaccounted for.
- We assess each opening: door material and thickness, frame condition, strike plate, hinges, and for gates, the latch and the exposure to weather. The cylinder is only one part of what we are checking.
- We recommend a cylinder and rating for each opening. Not every door needs the same level, and we will say so plainly rather than selling the top tier everywhere.
- We explain the key system: who holds keys, how copies are authorized, and whether one keying can cover several locks.
- We install the cylinders or complete deadbolts, reinforce the strike and frame where needed, and align everything so the bolt throws freely.
- We test every lock with every key, confirm the door closes and latches properly, and hand over the keys along with the information you need to order copies later.
Pick-resistant, bump-resistant and restricted: what each term means
Product labels throw these words around loosely, so here is what they mean at the door.
Pairing a mechanical high security cylinder with electronics is also an option. If you want keypad or app access on the main house, a high security cylinder can stay in place as the mechanical backup behind a smart lock installation, so you are not relying on batteries alone.
- Pick-resistant: security pins, tight tolerances and sometimes a second locking element make it far harder to set the pins with picks. Harder, not impossible.
- Bump-resistant: bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck to jump the pins. Bump-resistant designs use features such as sidebars, active elements or special pins so an impact does not line the pins up.
- Drill-resistant: hardened inserts or plates protect the shear line against a drill.
- Restricted keys: the key blank is controlled, so copies are cut only with authorization. This is what stops a stray key from turning into ten.
- Rated hardware: for deadbolts, look for ANSI/BHMA Grade 1. For cylinders, tested standards such as UL 437 describe resistance to picking, drilling and similar attacks. We read the ratings with you so you know what a given lock was actually tested against.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of high security lock installation?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your doors, and a price given without seeing them is a guess. Here is what moves the cost, so you can judge a quote when you get one.
Upgrading only the cylinders on a sound door is often the lighter-cost option compared with replacing complete hardware sets. Rekeying standard locks is lighter still, but it is not the same thing as high security, and we will tell you honestly when a rekey is enough for your situation. See our page on lock rekeying if that is where you are leaning. A scheduled upgrade during the day is also usually the more economical route than an after-hours emergency call, though we answer both.
- How many cylinders and openings are involved, including gates, barns and outbuildings
- The security level of the cylinder and whether it uses a restricted keyway
- Extra keys and authorization cards for a restricted system
- Whether several locks are keyed alike so one key works across them
- Door and frame condition, and any reinforcement of the strike, frame or hinges
- Whether the existing door is already prepped for the new hardware or needs new boring
- Weather-rated or shrouded hardware for exposed gates and padlocks
- Travel: Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood storefront, and that is a real part of the visit
- Time of day, since after-hours emergency work costs more than a planned appointment
How we approach high security locks around Agua Dulce
Agua Dulce is one ZIP code, 91390, but it covers very different pockets of property, and the lock question changes a little from one to the next. We work across the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center, the Sierra Highway corridor, the Darling Road area, Sleepy Valley, the area near Vasquez Rocks, and the Mint Canyon area toward Canyon Country.
One scenario comes up again and again here: new owners of horse properties along Sierra Highway. When you buy a ranchette with a barn, a tack room, a house and a driveway gate, you inherit every key the previous owner ever handed out. A basic rekey resets those keys, and for some buyers that is enough. Others use the changeover to install restricted-key cylinders on the house, barn and workshop, so that from the first day nobody can have a copy made without their say-so.
The driveway gate and entry lock work on ranchette properties off Agua Dulce Canyon Road raises a different point. A gate latch is exposed, unattended and often far from the house. A high security lock is only useful there if the hardware around it is up to the job, so we look at the latch, the post and the weather exposure, and we point you to gate lock repair when the gate itself needs work rather than the cylinder.
On the larger custom homes near Vasquez Rocks, the usual picture is a solid front door, a separate garage or shop door, and a side or patio door that gets the least attention. We tend to find the best use of a security budget is bringing every exterior door up to the same level instead of putting a top-tier lock on one and leaving the rest alone.

Call (213) 577-1366Wind, dust and shifting frames: what the high desert does to locks
Agua Dulce sits at about 2,500 feet in a high-desert transition climate: hot, dry summers, cold winter nights and frequent wind. Those swings matter for lock work in two ways.
First, temperature changes move door frames through the seasons. A high security deadbolt has tight tolerances, which is a strength against picking and a minor annoyance if the strike is set with no allowance for the frame moving. We align the bolt and strike with that movement in mind, so a lock that turns smoothly in summer does not bind when the cold nights arrive.
Second, dust works its way into exterior gate locks and padlocks. For anything outdoors we lean toward weather-rated hardware, shrouded shackles on padlocks, and covers where they make sense. We also steer owners away from heavy oil, which holds dust and gums up a tight cylinder. A dry lubricant used sparingly works better. If a lock is already sticking from grit, it may need cleaning or repair instead of replacement, and we will tell you which.
What about commercial security locks and outbuildings?
Plenty of property here is not a house. Hangars at Agua Dulce Airpark, barns, workshops and storage buildings hold expensive equipment and are often left unattended for long stretches. Hangar and outbuilding lock work is a standard scenario in this area, and high security cylinders and padlocks fit it well.
For these buildings we typically look at commercial-grade cylinders, hardened hasps, and high security padlocks with protected shackles. If several people need access, such as partners sharing a hangar, staff, or a trainer and a boarder, a controlled key system with different levels of access is cleaner than passing out identical keys. Our page on master key systems explains how that works, and our commercial locksmith service covers the business side in more detail.
Restricted keys also change how you get spares. Copies are made through an authorization process instead of at a counter, so plan ahead. When you do need extra keys, we can walk you through key duplication for your specific system.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for high security locks?
We have been in business since 1987. We are a real company with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Agua Dulce among them. When you call, you reach our own team rather than a call center that sells your job to whichever subcontractor picks it up. One company handles the visit from the first call to the final key.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. For high security jobs that matters, because the right answer depends on reading the door and the property correctly and not just swapping a part. Our mobile locksmith vans come to you, and the phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
One piece of advice that applies to any locksmith, including us: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number before anyone starts work on your locks, and be wary of anyone who cannot give it. That is more important when the job involves the keys and cylinders that protect your whole property.
Frequently asked questions
Are high security locks really pick-proof?
No, and be skeptical of anyone who says so. A high security lock raises the skill, time and noise needed to defeat it, and it blocks quick methods like bumping. How well the whole door holds up also depends on the frame, strike and hinges, which is why we look at all of it.
Will a bump-resistant lock actually stop lock bumping?
Bump-resistant cylinders are designed so a struck bump key does not line up the pins, using features like sidebars or special pins. They close off that cheap, fast method. We confirm that the specific cylinder you are considering has those features, since labeling varies between products.
Can you upgrade just the cylinders on my existing deadbolts?
Often yes, if the deadbolt body and door are sound. Swapping the cylinder is usually the lighter-cost route compared with replacing full hardware. If the door, frame or strike is weak, we will tell you, because a strong cylinder will not make up for that.
Why can't I copy a restricted key at the hardware store?
The key blanks are controlled, and copies are made only through an authorization process. That is the point of the system: nobody can make a copy without the approval of whoever is set up to authorize it. It means spares take some planning, so we suggest ordering extras at installation.
Can one key work for my house, barn and gate padlock?
In many cases yes. Several locks can be keyed alike within a system, or arranged so certain keys open more doors than others. Which options exist depends on the products, so we sort that out during the walk-through before ordering anything.
Do you come out to Agua Dulce at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood storefront, so we will talk through the timing when you call. Scheduled high security upgrades are usually the more economical route than after-hours calls.
Will dust and wind damage a high security lock?
Outdoor locks take the most punishment here. Weather-rated hardware, shrouded padlock shackles and a light dry lubricant help a great deal, while heavy oil tends to collect dust. Tight-tolerance cylinders do best when kept clean and when the strike is aligned for seasonal frame movement.
I just bought a horse property. Do I need high security locks or just a rekey?
A rekey resets who can open your existing locks and is often enough for a first step. High security with restricted keys goes further by controlling who can make copies, which suits properties with many buildings and many past key holders. We will give you a straight opinion once we see the doors.
What should I ask a locksmith before they work on my locks?
Ask for their BSIS LCO license number, which California requires of locksmith companies. Ask what is included in the quote and whether travel or after-hours charges apply, and ask which lock ratings they are recommending and why. A good locksmith answers all of that without fuss.
