Why are Agua Dulce homeowners switching to smart locks?
A smart lock replaces or adds to the key-operated deadbolt on your door so you can open it with a code, a phone, a fob or a fingerprint, instead of or alongside a brass key. On a multi-acre property that matters more than it sounds. When the house sits at the end of a long driveway, a lost key is not a short walk to a neighbor's spare. And when the people who need to get in include a farrier, a pool service, a house sitter, a feed delivery or a relative visiting for the weekend, handing out physical keys gets messy quickly.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been installing and servicing locks since 1987, and keyless entry is now a regular part of that work. This page explains what a smart lock installation involves, how we set one up, what moves the cost, and what to expect on a high-desert ranchette.
One honest note up front: a smart lock is an access-control and convenience upgrade, not a magic security upgrade. The lock is only as strong as the door, the frame and the strike plate it sits in. If your door needs attention first, we will say so before we install anything electronic on it.
Which kind of smart lock is right for your door?
Smart lock is a broad label. The right choice depends on how you want to open the door, whether you want to control it from away from home, and what the signal is like at your front door. These are the main types we install and set up:
- Keypad deadbolts: you enter a code on the outside. No phone needed, battery powered, and usually with a key override. This is the simplest keyless door lock and a good fit for households with regular visitors or workers.
- Bluetooth locks: your phone talks to the lock directly when you are close. No home network is required, which helps where Wi-Fi is weak at the door. Remote control from away usually needs an extra bridge.
- Wi-Fi locks: the lock joins your home network, directly or through a small bridge, so you can lock, unlock and check status from anywhere and get notifications. They depend on a reliable signal at the door.
- Fingerprint and combination models: useful if you do not want codes to remember or share, though not every household needs them.
- Retrofit smart units: these fit over the inside of your existing deadbolt and keep your current outside hardware and keys. They are a lighter-touch way to add app control.

Call (213) 577-1366How do we install and set up a smart lock, step by step?
Most smart lock installation is a few hours of careful work, and most of the care goes into the door, not the electronics. Here is how a typical visit runs. If you want a full new deadbolt without the smart features, that is covered on our deadbolt installation page.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the door type, what you have now, and how you want to open it. We help you narrow the lock type before we load the van.
- We arrive with hardware suited to your description and look at the door itself: thickness, bore holes, backset, alignment, and whether the latch meets the strike cleanly.
- We fix or adjust what needs it. A door that drags or a strike that sits slightly off will make a motorized lock jam or fail to throw fully.
- We remove the old hardware and install the new smart deadbolt or retrofit unit, checking that the bolt extends and retracts smoothly by hand before power goes in.
- We install batteries, pair the lock with its app or keypad, and set the date, time and any auto-lock settings.
- If it is a Wi-Fi model, we connect it to your network and test the signal at the door. If the signal is poor, we tell you plainly and talk through a bridge or a Bluetooth-only setup.
- We create your user codes or app users and walk you through changing, deleting and scheduling them yourself.
- We test every method of entry, including the physical key override, and leave you with the keys and the setup details you need. For general new hardware beyond smart models, see our lock installation page.
What affects the cost of smart lock installation?
We do not quote a flat figure over the web, because two smart lock jobs that sound identical can differ a lot once someone sees the door. What actually moves the cost:
- The lock itself: a basic keypad deadbolt and a Wi-Fi lock with a fingerprint reader are very different products.
- The door: a standard prepared entry door is quick. A thick custom door, a double door, or a door that needs new bore holes takes more time and sometimes more parts.
- Door and frame condition: alignment, a worn strike, or a swollen frame may need correcting first.
- Connectivity: a bridge, a network change or extra setup work adds time.
- How many locks: several doors in one visit are usually handled more efficiently than the same doors spread over several trips.
- Travel: our storefront is in Westwood and Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our base, so the trip is part of planning the job.

Call (213) 577-1366Can you repair, replace or troubleshoot a smart lock that has stopped working?
Yes. Smart lock repair, replacement and troubleshooting are all part of what we do, whether we installed the lock or not. The usual causes are less dramatic than people expect: weak batteries, an app that lost its pairing, a Wi-Fi password that changed, or a bolt that no longer lines up with the strike plate.
In a high-desert climate, that last one is common. Temperature swings shift door frames through the seasons, and a motorized bolt has far less tolerance than a hand-turned key. If your lock works in the morning and struggles in the afternoon heat, or the other way around, alignment is a likely suspect. Cold winter nights can also shorten battery life in some models, so a lock that behaved well in summer may start warning you in January.
When a smart lock is beyond a sensible repair, we replace it and set up the new one properly. For mechanical failures in any lock, see our lock repair page. If a dead battery or a failed lock has left you outside, our house lockout service is the faster route back in without damaging the door.
How do smart locks fit Agua Dulce homes and the high-desert climate?
Agua Dulce is almost entirely rural ranchettes and custom single-family homes on multi-acre parcels, much of it built from the 1970s onward. There is effectively no apartment or condo stock. That shapes smart lock work in a few practical ways.
First, doors vary. Custom homes often have heavier or oversized entry doors, sidelights, double doors and unusual hardware prep, so we measure rather than assume. Second, properties are spread out, which makes Wi-Fi range at the front door a real question rather than a footnote. A Bluetooth or keypad-first setup can be the dependable choice when the router is far from the entry.
Third, the weather works on hardware. The area sits at about 2,500 feet with hot, dry summers, cold nights in winter and frequent wind. Dust works into exterior locks, and heat and cold move door frames. For doors that take direct sun or wind, we choose hardware rated for exterior use and keep the keypad area protected where we can. An indoor-grade lock on an exposed door is a repair call waiting to happen.
Fourth, there are outbuildings. Barns, workshops and guest houses are standard here, and a keypad lock can make sharing access simple. Whether a smart lock suits a given outbuilding door depends on what that door is made of and how it closes, which we check in person.

Call (213) 577-1366Where do we install smart locks around Agua Dulce?
We serve all of 91390, from the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center and the Sierra Highway corridor to the Darling Road area, Sleepy Valley, the properties near Vasquez Rocks and the Mint Canyon side toward Canyon Country. Every one of those areas has the same basic pattern: long driveways, big parcels and few neighbors close enough to hold a spare key.
One scenario we see in this area is new owners of horse properties along Sierra Highway. Once the deed changes hands, you do not know who still has keys. Rekeying is the straightforward fix, and our lock rekey service covers it. Many new owners choose to go a step further and fit a smart deadbolt on the main house door, so that a ranch hand, a trainer or a vet can have their own code that you can delete later without changing any keys.
Another is the driveway gate. Smart locks are designed for doors, not gates, and gate hardware is built differently and takes more dust and weather. If your issue is a gate latch or gate lock off Agua Dulce Canyon Road, our gate lock repair page is the right place. We can still make the house entry smart and leave the gate on its own purpose-built hardware.
For hangar and outbuilding doors at Agua Dulce Airpark, tell us what the door is when you call. Large hangar doors often need different hardware than a standard entry door, and we would rather confirm that on site than promise a smart lock that does not suit it.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a smart lock installation?
Smart locks sit between hardware and electronics, and a lot of the trouble people have comes from one half of that being done carelessly. Here is what we offer, without dressing it up:
- In business since 1987. We have seen locks, doors and frames in every condition across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and that experience shows up in the door prep.
- A real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile service vans. You are dealing with a shop that exists, not a phone number that forwards somewhere.
- One company, no dispatch middlemen. The person who answers (213) 577-1366 works for the same business that comes to your door, so what we discuss on the phone is what turns up.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If something is unclear or unusual, it goes to him.
- Phones answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, so you can ask a question about a lock at any hour.

Call (213) 577-1366What should you ask any locksmith before an electronic lock installation?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), called an LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start work, including us. It is a normal question and a reasonable one. If someone cannot answer it clearly, move on.
A few other questions are worth asking. Will they check the door and strike plate, or just swap the lock? Will they test the key override with you watching? Will they show you how to manage codes yourself, so you are not dependent on them for every change? And will they tell you if the lock you picked is a poor match for your door or your signal? A good installer will happily answer all four.
If you want a stronger physical lock behind your smart deadbolt, our high security locks page explains what that involves. If you are not sure whether you need a visit or just advice, call, and we will say which it is. We can come to you with our mobile locksmith service, which is how most Agua Dulce work is done.
Frequently asked questions
Do you install smart locks that I have already bought?
Yes, in most cases. Bring or tell us the make and model when you call, and we will check it suits your door. We also look at the door itself, because a good lock on a misaligned door will still jam. If the lock is a poor match, we will say so before starting.
Will a smart lock work if my Wi-Fi does not reach the front door?
It can. Keypad and Bluetooth locks do not need your home network to open the door. If you want remote control from away, a bridge or a better placed access point may be needed, and we test the signal at the door during setup to see what is realistic.
What happens if the batteries die and I am locked out?
Most smart locks give a low-battery warning well ahead of time, and many keep a physical key override or a way to power the lock temporarily. We show you which one yours has. If you do get locked out anyway, call us any hour at (213) 577-1366.
Are smart locks safe, and can they be hacked?
Any connected device carries some risk, but most break-ins at doors come from weak doors, loose strike plates and unchanged codes, not hacking. A properly installed lock, strong passwords and removing old user codes cover most of it. We tell you plainly where a particular model is stronger or weaker.
Can I give a code to a ranch hand, farrier or house sitter and remove it later?
Yes, that is one of the best uses of a smart lock on a property like yours. Most models let you create separate user codes, and many let you schedule them. When the person no longer needs access, you delete the code and nobody has to hand a key back.
Can a smart lock go on my driveway gate or barn door?
Smart locks are made for doors, and gates and barn doors are different. Gate hardware has to handle dust, wind and weather and often uses purpose-built latches. We can tell you whether a barn or outbuilding door suits a keypad lock once we see it, and gate problems go to our gate lock repair service.
Will heat, cold and dust affect a smart lock out here?
They can. Temperature swings shift door frames, which affects alignment, and dust gets into exterior hardware. Cold nights can shorten battery life on some models. We choose exterior-appropriate hardware for exposed doors and check alignment as part of every installation.
Do I still need a key if I install a smart lock?
Usually yes, and we recommend keeping one. Many smart deadbolts include a key override, which is a useful backup if batteries run low or the electronics fail. Some models are keyless, and if you want one of those we will explain the backup options before you decide.
How do I know a locksmith is properly licensed in California?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number before work starts and check it with the state if you want to be sure. You are entitled to ask any locksmith that, including us.
