What does deadbolt installation actually involve?
Most people think a deadbolt install is just swapping one lock for another. Sometimes it is. Often it is more than that: boring a new hole in a door that never had one, correcting a hole that was drilled badly years ago, or fitting a new bolt into a frame that has moved since the last one went in. The hardware is the easy part. The fit is what decides whether the lock works smoothly for the next twenty years or sticks every January.
A deadbolt is a different animal from the spring latch in your doorknob. The latch holds the door closed. The deadbolt is what actually resists someone pushing, prying, or kicking, because the bolt is a solid piece of metal that only moves when a key or thumb-turn moves it. If the bolt only just reaches into the frame, or the strike plate is held by short screws into soft trim, you have a lock that looks like security and performs like decoration.
This page covers new deadbolt installation and deadbolt replacement on residential doors in Agua Dulce: single-cylinder bolts, double-cylinder bolts, and the door and frame prep that makes either one work. If your real problem is a lock that is worn but otherwise fine, or a lock whose keys you want to invalidate, we will say so on the phone, because there is a lighter-cost route for those cases and we would rather point you to it.
Single or double-cylinder: which deadbolt fits your door?
A single-cylinder deadbolt takes a key on the outside and has a thumb-turn on the inside. It is the standard choice for nearly every entry door, and for most homes it is the right one. You can leave quickly, a guest can let themselves out, and nobody is hunting for a key in an emergency.
A double-cylinder deadbolt takes a key on both sides. The reason people ask for one is almost always glass: a door with a window or sidelight within arm's reach of the thumb-turn, where a person could break the pane, reach in, and turn the bolt. That concern is legitimate. The tradeoff is just as real: if you cannot get a key into the inside cylinder fast, you cannot get out through that door.
Because of that, many building and fire codes restrict keyed-both-sides locks on exit doors in homes, and the rules depend on the door and the jurisdiction. We will not install a double cylinder without talking through it first. Agua Dulce is unincorporated Los Angeles County, so before you commit, confirm what applies to your property, and we will tell you plainly what we have seen work and where a double cylinder is a poor idea.
- Single cylinder: key outside, thumb-turn inside. The right answer for most solid entry doors.
- Double cylinder: key both sides. Considered for doors with glass near the lock, and only where code and your own household safety allow it.
- Glass-door alternative: a single cylinder paired with a security film, a door with a smaller or higher window, or a different glass layout can solve the same problem without trapping anyone inside.
- Barns and outbuildings: a double cylinder is far more defensible where nobody sleeps and the door is not a household exit.

Call (213) 577-1366How we install or replace a deadbolt, step by step
Every job is a little different, but the order of work is consistent. This is what happens when we come out to a house, barn, or outbuilding in Agua Dulce.
- Look at the door first. We check material, thickness, condition, and whether the door hangs true, before anything is drilled or removed.
- Identify what is already there. If a deadbolt exists, we note the backset, the bore size, and whether the old hole is clean enough to reuse. If there is no deadbolt, we mark a fresh location with a template.
- Choose the hardware with you. We talk through grade, finish, cylinder type, and whether you want the new bolt keyed to your existing keys or set up on its own key.
- Bore and fit. For a new bolt we cut the cross bore and the edge bore, keeping the cut clean so the bolt travels freely. For a replacement we remove the old hardware and test the existing holes.
- Install the strike and reinforce. The strike plate goes in with long screws that reach the structural framing, not just the trim. Where the frame is weak or split, we address that before closing it up.
- Align and test. We cycle the bolt many times with the door open, closed, and under slight pressure, and check that it throws fully without dragging or needing a lift on the handle.
- Hand over the keys and explain the lock. You get the keys, a short walkthrough, and honest advice on anything else we noticed on the door.
What affects the cost of deadbolt installation in Agua Dulce?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because a deadbolt job can be very simple or surprisingly involved depending on the door. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost up or down so you know what you are being asked to pay for.
The biggest single factor is whether the door already has a properly drilled bolt hole. Swapping a deadbolt into an existing bore is usually the more economical route. Cutting a new bore into a solid door, or fixing an old one that was drilled crooked, takes more time and more care.
Hardware grade is next. A basic residential bolt, a heavier bolt with a hardened throw and a reinforced strike, and a bolt built to resist picking and drilling are all different products at different price points. The door itself matters too: solid wood, steel, fiberglass, and older hollow-core doors all behave differently under a hole saw.
Finally, there is the trip. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood base, so travel is part of how we plan and price a visit out here. Being straightforward about that is better than hiding it. If you have several doors in need of work, doing them in a single visit is the usual way to make the trip count.
- Existing bore versus new bore or repair of a poorly drilled hole
- Single or double cylinder, and the grade of the hardware
- Door material and condition: wood, steel, fiberglass, or an older hollow door
- Frame and strike repair when the jamb is split, shifted, or soft
- Number of doors done in one visit
- After-hours or emergency scheduling versus a planned appointment
- Whether you want the bolt keyed to existing keys or a new key

Call (213) 577-1366Deadbolts on Agua Dulce ranchettes, barns, and outbuildings
Agua Dulce is nearly all rural ranchettes and custom single-family homes on multi-acre parcels, much of it built from the 1970s onward. There is effectively no apartment or condo stock here. That changes how deadbolt work looks. You are rarely dealing with a single front door on a tract house. You are dealing with a main house, a back door to a patio, maybe a guest house, a barn tack room, and a workshop, each with its own door and its own risk.
Properties in the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center area, along the Sierra Highway corridor, around Darling Road, and in Sleepy Valley are often set well back from the road, and some sit near Vasquez Rocks. Help is not next door, and in the 91390 ZIP code that distance is a real consideration. A deadbolt that actually holds matters more when a neighbor cannot see your door. On ranchettes, we most often see new bolts added to side doors and outbuildings that only ever had a knob lock.
A scenario we hear about regularly is new owners of horse properties along Sierra Highway. When you buy one, you inherit an unknown number of keys in unknown hands: the previous owner, trainers, farriers, caretakers, and anyone else who ever needed a barn key. For the house itself, rekeying the locks is often the most economical way to cut off old keys. But if the existing deadbolt is worn, mismatched, or a builder-grade bolt on a door that deserves better, this is the natural moment to put in a proper one while the locks are already being dealt with.
Climate matters here too. At roughly 2,500 feet, Agua Dulce has hot dry summers, cold winter nights, and frequent wind. Temperature swings move door frames through the seasons, and a deadbolt that was installed tight in July can bind in December. We set the bolt with a little tolerance and align it with both ends of the season in mind. Dust works into exterior hardware as well, so for outbuilding doors we pay attention to weather exposure and finish rather than assuming an indoor-grade bolt will hold up on a barn door.
If your property also has a driveway gate that needs its own lock work, that is a separate job from a door deadbolt, and our page on gate lock repair covers it. We keep the two separate so each job gets the right hardware.

Call (213) 577-1366Replace the deadbolt, rekey it, or add a new one?
These are three different jobs, and getting the right one saves money. If your deadbolt works smoothly and you simply want old keys to stop working, rekeying changes the internal pins so a new key fits and the old ones do not. That is usually the lighter-cost fix, and it is a different service from this one.
If the bolt is worn, rough, loose in the door, or damaged by a break-in attempt, deadbolt replacement is the better choice. If the lock is an older style, a plain latch, or a weak builder-grade piece, upgrading during a replacement makes sense. Our broader page on lock replacement covers worn and failing hardware across the whole house.
If the door has only a knob and no deadbolt at all, you need a new installation. That is the work on this page, and it also falls under our general lock installation service.
One more option people ask about is electronic locks. If you are thinking about a keypad or app-based bolt instead of a traditional keyed one, our smart lock installation page explains how that differs. Keep in mind that an electronic lock still relies on a mechanical bolt and a solid door, so the same fit issues apply.
A deadbolt is only as strong as the door and frame around it
A good bolt in a bad door is a wasted purchase. Most forced entries do not defeat the lock itself. They split the frame, kick through the strike side, or punch through a thin door skin. This is why part of every install is looking at the strike plate, the jamb, and the wood behind the trim.
On older custom homes in Agua Dulce, we sometimes find original jambs that have dried, cracked, or shifted over decades of heat and cold. Fixing that is part of doing the job honestly, and we will show you what we found. A longer strike screw into real framing often does more for security than a more expensive bolt.
If you want a bolt that resists picking, drilling, and bumping beyond the basic grade, see our page on high-security locks. It explains what the extra protection is and which doors justify it.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a deadbolt?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so a rural job in Agua Dulce is not unfamiliar to us. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, and the person who answers the phone is part of the same company that sends the technician. There is no dispatch middleman reselling your call to someone else.
David is the owner and lead technician, and he oversees the work. That matters on a job like this, where judgment calls come up: whether a door is worth reinforcing, whether a double cylinder is wise, whether a rekey would do the job instead.
One thing worth knowing about any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask to see that number from anyone you let near your doors. It is a fair question and a good habit.
Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you are locked out of a door we are about to work on, the situation is different from a planned install, and our house lockout page explains how we handle that. For planned work out here, our mobile locksmith service comes to the property, so you do not have to bring the door to us.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a deadbolt on a door that never had one?
Yes. We mark the location with a template, cut the cross bore and edge bore, fit the bolt, and install a reinforced strike plate. The door needs to be thick and solid enough to take the hole. Hollow or damaged doors may need repair or replacement first, and we will say so before cutting.
Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea for my house?
Only in specific cases. It is considered for doors with glass near the lock, but a key-both-sides lock can trap you inside in an emergency, and many building and fire codes restrict them on household exit doors. We talk it through first and often suggest a single cylinder or a different glass solution. For a barn or workshop, a double cylinder is easier to defend.
What is the difference between deadbolt installation and deadbolt replacement?
Installation means adding a deadbolt where none exists, which involves drilling the door. Replacement means taking out an existing deadbolt and fitting a new one, often into the same holes. Replacement is usually quicker. If the old holes were cut badly, a replacement can turn into a repair job as well.
Should I replace my deadbolt or just rekey it?
If the lock works well and you only want old keys to stop working, rekeying is usually the lighter-cost route. If the bolt is worn, loose, damaged, or a weak builder-grade piece, replacement makes more sense. Tell us what the lock is doing and we will recommend the right option, even when that is the smaller job.
Can you key the new deadbolt to match my other locks?
Usually yes. We can set the new bolt to your existing key so one key works across the doors, or give it its own key when you want it separate, for example for a barn or rental unit. Tell us how you want the keys to work before we start.
Will my deadbolt stick when the weather changes?
It can if it was installed too tight. Agua Dulce has hot summers, cold winter nights, and frequent wind, and door frames shift with temperature. We align the bolt with some tolerance and test it, so it throws cleanly in both seasons. If a door still moves a lot, the frame itself may need work.
Do you install deadbolts on barns, hangars, and outbuildings?
Yes. Outbuildings often get weaker hardware than the house, and they deserve a proper bolt, especially on rural parcels where no one is nearby. We choose hardware with the exposure in mind, since dust and weather wear exterior locks faster than indoor ones. For gates, see our gate lock repair page instead.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number, and be wary of anyone who dodges the question. Also ask who is actually coming to your property and whether the company you called is the one doing the work.
Do you come out to Agua Dulce at night?
Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood base, so call with your address and the situation, and we will tell you what is realistic. Planned installs are usually easier to schedule than after-hours calls.
