What are high security locks, exactly?
High security locks are cylinders and deadbolts built to resist the ways people actually get through a locked door without the key. A standard builder-grade lock uses simple pin tumblers with loose tolerances, which is why it can be picked or bumped with common tools. A high security lock tightens those tolerances and adds hardened parts and extra locking elements, so those methods become slow, noisy or impractical.
Three things usually define the category:
On this page, high security means the whole system: cylinder, bolt, strike plate and the door and frame it is mounted in. A strong cylinder on a weak frame is still a weak door, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a part you do not need.
- Pick-resistant internals: security pins such as spool or serrated pins and, in many designs, a second locking element like a sidebar, so lifting pins one at a time is not enough.
- Bump-resistance: cylinder designs that do not let a bump key pass energy to the pins the way it does in an ordinary lock.
- Restricted keys: protected key blanks and keyways, so copies cannot simply be cut at a hardware store kiosk. Many designs also add hardened inserts that resist drilling.
Why do Palmdale homeowners and businesses ask about high security locks?
The reasons are usually practical, not dramatic. Someone moves into a home and has no idea how many keys are still out there. A tenant leaves and nobody can say who kept a copy. A contractor, a former employee or a relative had a key years ago. Or a neighbor had a break-in, and the standard lock on your own front door suddenly feels thin.
Often the real issue is key control rather than the lock itself. A cheap key can be copied by anyone, anywhere, without asking you. A restricted key system changes that: the blank is protected, and duplicates are made only through an authorized process. For a household that wants to know who holds a key, or a business that hands out keys to several people, that is the main benefit, more than the pick resistance.
The other common trigger is a lock that is simply worn out. Locks that have been turned thousands of times, exposed to heat and dust, start to feel gritty and loose. If you are replacing it anyway, it makes sense to ask whether a better cylinder costs much more to put in the same door. Sometimes it is a modest step up, and sometimes the door needs work first. We check before we quote.

Call (213) 577-1366What is the difference between pick-resistant and bump-resistant locks?
They are related but not identical. Picking is manipulating the pins with tools, one at a time or in sequence, until the cylinder turns. Bumping uses a specially cut key and a sharp tap to jolt the pins into place for an instant. A lock can be hard to pick yet still be vulnerable to bumping, and the reverse is also true, so a good high security cylinder is designed to address both.
We want to be straight about one thing: no lock is pick-proof. Given enough time, skill and tools, a determined person can defeat almost any mechanical lock. The real aim is to raise the effort and skill required so that most attempts fail or are not worth the noise and time. Cylinders rated under recognized standards, such as UL 437 for key locks, have been tested for resistance to picking, drilling and similar attacks, and deadbolt strength is graded under ANSI/BHMA, where Grade 1 is the strongest tier. When we recommend a product we will tell you what it is built to resist and what it is not.
It is also worth knowing that a lot of forced entries are not lock attacks at all. They are a kicked door, a split frame or a pried strike. That is why the bolt, the strike plate, the screws and the frame matter as much as the cylinder.
How do we install high security locks, step by step?
Here is how a typical high security lock installation or replacement goes when you call us in Palmdale.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what you have: how many exterior doors, what type of lock is on them now, who has keys, and what prompted the upgrade. We answer around the clock, so you can call at night or on a weekend.
- We look at the door, frame and existing hardware in person. We check whether the door closes squarely, whether the bolt lines up with the strike, whether the wood around the strike is sound, and whether the door itself is solid or hollow.
- We explain the options and what each would change. That might mean swapping only the cylinder, or fitting a new deadbolt installation with a high security cylinder, or fixing the frame first. We give you the reasoning, and you choose.
- We install the hardware, reinforce the strike with long screws into the framing where the situation calls for it, and adjust the door so the bolt throws freely without forcing.
- We cut and test the keys, then check every lock from inside and outside, including the bolt throw and the key action. If the system is restricted, we explain how the keys are registered and how additional copies are obtained.
- We hand over the keys and walk you through what to do if one goes missing, so you are not guessing later.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of high security lock replacement?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the door in front of us. Here is what actually moves the cost:
If budget is tight, ask us about the lighter-cost route. When the existing hardware is sound and your main concern is who holds keys, lock rekeying is usually the more economical route. Be aware, though, that rekeying a standard cylinder changes the key but does not make that cylinder pick-resistant. We will say plainly which of the two problems you are solving.
- How many cylinders and doors are involved, and whether they should all use one key.
- Residential versus commercial grade hardware, and how robust the deadbolt body itself needs to be.
- The key system: a protected keyway with restricted blanks and authorization paperwork costs more to supply than a standard one.
- Whether the door and frame need reinforcement, strike repair or realignment before new hardware will work properly.
- Whether you need a cylinder swap only or a full new deadbolt and trim.
- How many keys you need cut at handover, and whether any need to be keyed alike or fit a larger system.
- Time of day and distance. Palmdale is about 59 miles from our Westwood storefront, and after-hours calls can affect a quote. We tell you before we start, not after.
What does a high security upgrade look like around Palmdale?
Palmdale is not one housing type, and the right approach changes depending on where you live. The area is served by ZIP codes 93550, 93551 and 93552, and we work across all three.
In East Palmdale, much of the housing dates from the 1950s to the 1980s and is tied to the aerospace industry. Older doors and frames there have had decades of seasonal movement, so we look at the frame and strike area closely before recommending a new cylinder. A high security cylinder on a door that no longer lines up with its strike will bind, and that is a frame problem, not a lock problem.
In West Palmdale, tract homes around Rancho Vista and the Antelope Valley Country Club Estates went up quickly from the late 1980s through the 2000s, often with similar builder-grade hardware throughout. Anaverde, the newer master-planned community in the southwest hills, tends to have newer doors but still typically ordinary builder-grade cylinders on the front. For these homes, replacing the entry cylinders with pick-resistant, bump-resistant ones and adding a restricted key is often the most sensible step.
The Antelope Valley climate matters too. Very hot summers, freezing winter nights and strong, dusty winds make doors and frames move with the seasons, and wind-blown grit shortens the life of exposed exterior locks. A tight-tolerance cylinder is less forgiving of dust and misalignment, so we pay attention to the finish, the exposure of the door and how the bolt enters the strike. We also suggest a dry lubricant made for locks rather than oil, which tends to hold grit.
For apartment and duplex stock along Palmdale Boulevard and the east-side avenues, property owners often want a restricted key system so that unit keys cannot be copied freely between tenants. That is where our locksmith for landlords service fits alongside high security hardware.
For industrial and aerospace-adjacent buildings near U.S. Air Force Plant 42, the question is usually how many people hold keys and how access is organized. Our commercial locksmith work covers commercial security locks, and where many doors share a hierarchy, a master key system can sit on top of high security cylinders. Because Palmdale is a drive from our storefront, we plan the visit on the phone, including what hardware to bring, so you are not waiting on a second trip.

Call (213) 577-1366When are high security locks not the right answer?
Sometimes the honest recommendation is something else. If your door is hollow, cracked around the strike or hung in a frame that flexes, spend on the door and frame first. A premium cylinder will not rescue weak wood. Sliding glass doors, windows and garage service doors are separate weak points, and a lock on the front door does not change them.
If your real goal is keypad or phone entry, that is a different product. Our smart lock installation service covers it, and we can talk through how a mechanical backup fits in.
If you are locked out right now, a high security upgrade is not the first job. Call our emergency locksmith line to get inside, and we can discuss better locks once the situation has calmed down.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for high security locks?
We have been in business since 1987, and we are one company, not a dispatch service that passes your job to whoever picks up the call. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Palmdale among them.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees our work, including how we approach security upgrades. That matters for high security locks, because the right product depends on judgment: reading a door, a frame and a situation honestly instead of pushing the most expensive part.
You can call (213) 577-1366 at any hour, any day of the year, and a person answers. If we do not think you need a high security lock, we will say so.
What should you ask any high security locksmith before hiring?
Ask for the company's California BSIS locksmith company license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and any legitimate company should be willing to show it. Ask who will actually come to your door and whether it is the company you called. Ask exactly what the lock is rated for, who controls key duplication, and what they will check on the door itself. A vague answer on any of these is a reason to keep looking.
Ask for the work to be explained before it starts, including what could change the quote once the technician is on site. That is how it should work with us, too.
Frequently asked questions
Are high security locks really pick-proof?
No lock is pick-proof. A high security cylinder is built to take far more time, skill and specialized tools to defeat than a standard one, which makes most attempts impractical. We tell you what a given product is designed to resist and where its limits are.
Will a high security lock stop lock bumping?
Bump-resistant cylinders are designed so a bump key cannot jolt the pins into position the way it can on an ordinary lock. We install bump-resistant cylinders in Palmdale, and we also check the door, bolt and strike, because forced entry often goes through the door rather than the cylinder.
Can I rekey my current locks instead of replacing them?
Often yes, and it is usually the more economical route if your main concern is who holds keys. But rekeying a standard cylinder does not make it pick-resistant or bump-resistant. If you want those qualities, the cylinder needs to be replaced with a high security one.
Can I get extra keys for a restricted key system?
Yes, but not from a hardware store kiosk. Restricted keys are protected by design, so duplicates go through an authorized process, usually with identification or registration. Our key duplication team can explain how it works for your specific system.
Can I install high security locks in a rental or apartment?
If you rent, get your landlord's written permission first, since lock changes can affect lease terms and access obligations. Owners of apartments and duplexes in Palmdale often like restricted keys because they limit uncontrolled copies between tenants.
Will high security locks hold up to Palmdale heat, wind and dust?
Quality cylinders are built to last, but the high-desert climate is hard on exposed exterior locks. Hot summers, freezing nights and wind-blown grit shorten lock life, and seasonal door movement can misalign the bolt. We check alignment, advise on lubrication and talk through finishes when we install.
Can high security cylinders be part of a commercial master key system?
In many cases, yes. A master key hierarchy can be built on high security cylinders, though the available options depend on the product line. We plan the layout around how many doors, how many key holders and how access is organized.
How long does installation take?
A single deadbolt on a sound door is a fairly short visit. Several doors, a frame repair or a restricted key set-up take longer. We give you a realistic picture after looking at the door, because Palmdale is a drive from our Westwood storefront and we want to arrive with the right hardware.
Can I call about high security locks late at night?
Yes. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. For a planned upgrade we will usually discuss options and arrange a visit, and if you are locked out or had a break-in, say so right away.
