What does good key duplication look like in Agua Dulce?

A duplicate key sounds like the simplest job in the trade, and it is a small one. But a key that is cut a little off will still go into the lock, feel almost right, and then bind, stick or wear the pins on the one day you need it. Good key duplication means the right blank, a clean cut that follows the original's depths and spacing, and a test in the lock before you walk away with it.

Agua Dulce is not a place where most people can pop around the corner to a hardware counter. The community is made up almost entirely of ranchettes and custom homes on multi-acre parcels, and a single household often carries more keys than a city apartment ever would: front door, deadbolt, a side door, a driveway gate, a barn or outbuilding, a padlock or two, and a mailbox. When you need spares, you want them made once, made right, and labeled so nobody is guessing which brass key opens which door.

We have been doing this work since 1987, and key duplication is the kind of job where that history shows in small habits: checking the blank against the keyway before cutting, deburring the edges, and trying the copy in the actual lock when we can. This page explains how we handle it, what changes the cost, and what is specific to Agua Dulce properties.

Why do copies fail, and how do we avoid it?

Most bad copies come from one of three problems. The first is a worn original. Every copy made from a copy carries the small errors of the one before it, and after a few generations the cuts drift out of tolerance. If the key you hand us is visibly worn, we will say so, and where it makes sense we may suggest cutting from a fresher key or working from the lock itself rather than copying the error forward.

The second problem is the wrong blank. Keys that look the same can have different keyways, different shoulder positions or different lengths. A blank that is close but not correct can enter the lock and still cut poorly. The third is a rushed cut on a worn machine, which leaves burrs that chew the inside of your lock over time.

None of this is exotic. It is just attention. We would rather take a minute to match the blank properly than hand you a key you have to jiggle.

  • Start from the best original you have, not the key that has lived on a ring for years.
  • Match the blank to the keyway, not just to how the key looks.
  • Remove burrs so the new key does not scrape the pins.
  • Test the copy in the lock whenever the lock is available to us.

How do we duplicate a key, step by step?

The process is the same whether you come to the storefront or we meet you at your property, with a few differences for restricted and high-security keys that we cover below.

  1. You tell us what the key opens and how many copies you want. Knowing it is a deadbolt, a gate lock or a mailbox helps us choose the right blank.
  2. We inspect the original for wear, bends and cracks, and identify the brand and keyway.
  3. We select a matching blank. If the key is stamped with a restriction or looks like a high-security type, we stop and check what is required before cutting anything.
  4. We cut the copy, clean the edges, and compare it against the original.
  5. Where possible, we test the new key in the lock, then test it again after you turn it a few times under normal use.
  6. We hand back the original and copies, and we suggest marking them so the household can tell them apart.

Which kinds of keys can we copy?

Most keys fall into a handful of families, and the right approach depends on which one you hold.

  • House keys and spare house keys: standard residential keys for front doors, side doors and garages are the most common request. Having a spare cut before you need it is far easier than being locked out, though if that happens we can help with a house lockout.
  • Duplicate deadbolt keys: many homes use a separate key for the deadbolt, or a different keyway on the knob and the bolt. Tell us which lock the key belongs to so we do not mix up the blanks.
  • Apartment key copies: Agua Dulce has effectively no apartment or condo stock, but if you own or manage a rental unit elsewhere, or have a guest unit on your property, we can copy those keys too, subject to building rules on restricted systems.
  • Office and commercial key duplication: shop, office and outbuilding keys, including keys on a master system. Master-keyed cylinders need special care, because a wrong cut could open doors it should not. See our notes on a master key system if you are thinking about reorganizing who can open what.
  • Mailbox key duplication: private and property mailboxes use small, simple keys that copy easily. Boxes controlled by the postal service are a different matter, because the postal service holds those keys.
  • High-security and restricted keys: these are covered in the next section, since the rules are different.

What about high-security and restricted keys?

Some keys cannot be copied on an ordinary machine. High-security keys, such as those with a cut on the side of the blade or dimples drilled into the face, need specialized cutting equipment and specific blanks. Restricted keyways go a step further: the manufacturer controls the blanks, and copies are normally made only with the right authorization on file.

A stamp reading Do Not Duplicate on a key is not a lock in itself. Anyone with the right blank and a machine can physically cut it, which is exactly why those stamps do not provide real security. If you need that level of protection, the answer is a restricted system, not a stamp. We will tell you honestly if a key you hand us is a restricted type, what authorization is typically needed, and whether the copy has to be ordered rather than cut on the spot.

If you have been thinking about moving to a system where keys cannot be casually copied, that is a lock decision more than a copying decision. Our page on high-security locks explains how those systems work and what they change for you.

How much does key duplication cost in Agua Dulce?

We do not quote prices on a web page, because the real number depends on the key in your hand. Here is what moves the cost, so you know what you are paying for when you call (213) 577-1366.

A plain, common house key is the lighter-cost end of the work. Cost goes up as the blank becomes harder to source, as the key needs special equipment, or as it is restricted and requires verification and ordering. Quantity matters too: several copies of the same key are usually more economical per key than one-off requests spread over many visits.

  • Key type: standard, high-security, restricted, or a key with a built-in electronic component.
  • Blank availability: common blanks are on hand; unusual ones may need to be ordered.
  • Number of copies and whether some are cut from a worn original that needs extra care.
  • Where the work happens: coming to the storefront is different from a mobile trip out to your property.
  • Time of day: our phone is answered around the clock, but after-hours visits are priced differently from daytime ones.
  • Whether the job is only copying, or turns into something else, such as rekeying so all keys match.

Can you come to my property for mobile key duplication?

Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and Agua Dulce sits about 46 miles from our base. For some people that distance means bringing the key to us is not practical, and that is where the mobile vans come in. Our mobile locksmith service lets us bring the cutting to many common keys at your door.

We will be straightforward about the limits. Some keys can be cut on the van. Others, such as restricted keyways or unusual blanks, may need to be matched at the shop or ordered. When you call, describe the key, read us any markings on the blade or head, and tell us the lock brand if you know it. We will say whether a mobile visit will finish the job or whether it makes more sense to do it another way.

Because it is one company, you speak to the same people who do the work. There is no dispatcher passing your request to a subcontractor you have never met.

Key duplication on Agua Dulce ranchettes and rural properties

Properties here do not look like the typical city lot, and key needs follow the land. Around the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center, the Sierra Highway corridor, the Darling Road area, Sleepy Valley, and the homes near Vasquez Rocks, the same pattern repeats: a main residence, often built from the 1970s onward, plus gates, barns, horse facilities and outbuildings, each with its own lock. In ZIP code 91390, a household can easily end up with a ring of keys that nobody has ever organized.

Take the new-owner situation. Someone buys a horse property along Sierra Highway and receives a handful of keys from the previous owner, some unlabeled, some already worn flat from copying. The sensible order is usually to rekey the locks so the old keys stop working, then cut the number of copies the household actually needs from the fresh set. Rekeying is its own job, and you can read about it on our lock rekey page, but doing the copying after rekeying means every copy you pay for is the key that works.

The climate matters too. At around 2,500 feet, Agua Dulce has hot, dry summers, cold winter nights and frequent wind. Door frames shift with the temperature, which can make a slightly off key feel worse than it would in a milder place. Dust works into exterior gate locks and padlocks, and a gate key that has been sitting in a dusty cylinder can arrive at our counter with grit packed into the grooves. We clean what we can before we cut, and when a key will not turn smoothly in a dusty gate lock, the fix may be the lock rather than the copy. That is where gate lock repair comes in.

Hangars and outbuildings follow the same logic. People who keep a plane at Agua Dulce Airpark or run an outbuilding behind a house often need extra keys for a partner, a family member, a hand or a contractor. Getting those copies made once, from a clean original, is cheaper in time and trouble than discovering the only key snapped off in a padlock. If that does happen, see our page on broken key extraction.

Why have Wilshire Lock & Key cut your keys?

We try to be plain about what we offer. We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront in Westwood and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Agua Dulce among them. We are one company, so the person who answers your call is part of the team that does the work, and our owner and lead technician, David, oversees how jobs are handled.

One thing worth knowing for any locksmith you hire: California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), known as an LCO license. Ask for the license number from anyone who comes to your property, and check it. That applies to us and to every other company you call.

Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, at (213) 577-1366. Key duplication is rarely an emergency, but it can become one at an odd hour: a house sitter needs a key tonight, a ranch hand starts early, or a lost spare means the only key left is the one you are holding. If the situation is urgent, our 24-hour locksmith and emergency locksmith pages cover that side of the work.

How should you manage your spare keys once you have them?

A few habits save time and money later. Label each key by what it opens, using a code or a short mark rather than writing your address on a tag. Keep one complete spare set somewhere secure and off the property, with someone you trust. Do not hide a key outside, because rural properties with long driveways and quiet frontage make hiding places easy to find for anyone who looks.

Make copies from a good key, and keep that good key as your master copy rather than the one you use every day. If a key starts sticking in the lock, have it checked before it breaks. If you are ever unsure who still holds a copy, such as after a tenant moves out, a contractor finishes, or a property changes hands, treat that as a reason to rekey rather than to keep making more copies.

Finally, if you run a rental or a guest house, consider how many keys you really want in circulation. Our mailbox lock replacement page is a helpful reference if a mailbox key has gone missing and copying is no longer enough, but the same principle applies across the property: fewer keys, clearly assigned, are easier to keep secure.

Frequently asked questions

Can you copy a house key the same day?

Often yes, for common residential keys, if the blank is one we carry. Call (213) 577-1366 and describe the key. We will tell you whether it can be cut right away, whether a mobile visit will finish it, or whether the blank needs to be ordered.

Do you come to Agua Dulce to make duplicate keys?

Yes. Our mobile vans serve Agua Dulce, which is about 46 miles from our Westwood base. Many common keys can be cut on site. Restricted or unusual keys may need to be handled at the shop or ordered, and we will tell you that when you call.

Can you copy a key stamped Do Not Duplicate?

That stamp is a request, not a technical barrier, and it does not guarantee that a key is restricted. We will look at the key and tell you what it is. If it belongs to a restricted keyway, copies normally require the proper authorization, and we will explain what is needed before cutting anything.

What is the difference between a regular key and a high-security key?

A regular key has cuts along its edge and can be copied on a standard machine. High-security keys often use side cuts or dimples and need specialized equipment and specific blanks. They are harder to copy casually, which is part of why people choose them.

Can you duplicate a gate or padlock key?

Yes, in most cases. Dust and grit in exterior locks can make a key hard to read, so we clean the original before cutting. If the key sticks in the lock even when it is clean, the lock may need attention and we can look at repair rather than just another copy.

Can you copy a mailbox key?

Private and property mailbox keys are usually simple to copy. Mailboxes controlled by the postal service are different, because the postal service holds those keys and we cannot copy them. If you cannot tell which kind you have, describe it when you call.

Should I copy a worn key or have a new one made another way?

If the original is worn flat, copying it can pass the error along to every new key. We will check the wear. Sometimes cutting from the lock or from a better original gives a more accurate result, and we will suggest that if it applies.

Is it better to rekey before making copies?

If you have just bought a property, lost track of old keys, or are unsure who holds copies, yes. Rekeying first means the new keys are the only ones that work. If you only need a spare of a key that is already secure, copying alone is fine.

What should I bring for key duplication?

Bring the best working original key, not a worn copy. If it is for a restricted or high-security lock, bring any card or paperwork that came with the lock, and photograph any markings on the key head. Tell us what each key opens.

Can you copy car keys as part of this service?

Plain metal car keys are copied like any other key, but many modern keys contain a chip and need programming. That depends on the make, model and year, so we confirm by VIN or in person rather than guess. Call (213) 577-1366 with your vehicle details.
