What do Hyundai owners in Whittier usually need?
Most Hyundai calls fall into a few groups: a spare because only one key is left, a replacement after the last key is lost, a smart fob that has stopped working, and a car that was tampered with in an attempted theft. The last one is more common with Hyundai than with most makes, and the reason is covered below.
Where it happens depends on how people live in Whittier. Around Uptown Whittier and along Whittier Boulevard, much of the apartment stock means cars sit at the curb or in shared lots, and keys get lost somewhere between the apartment door and the driver's seat. Near Whittier College, student rentals mean a key gets passed between roommates, left in a borrowed jacket, or dropped somewhere on campus. In the lots at Whittwood Town Center and around PIH Health Whittier Hospital, a key can go missing during a shift or a long errand, and the car is stuck right where it is. Out at a trailhead like Hellman Park, a key that slips out of a pocket on the hill leaves you with a locked car and no way home.
Which job you have decides the approach. If the key is only locked inside the car, that is a Whittier car lockout call, and no new key is needed. If every key is gone, you are looking at lost car key replacement in Whittier. If you still have the fob but it has quit, that is a separate repair or replacement job, which we cover on our Whittier key fob replacement page.
How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?
We bring the tools to the car, wherever it is parked in Whittier. You don't tow it anywhere or wait for a dealer appointment. This is the order we work in:
- You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour, any day. Tell us the model, the year, the trim if you know it, and whether the car starts with a turn key or a push button.
- We ask what you still have: a working key, a fob with a weak battery, a broken blade, or nothing at all. That tells us what to bring to the car.
- At the car, we confirm ownership. Registration and ID that match the vehicle are required. We don't make keys for a car without that.
- We identify what the car actually carries. We look at the ignition type, the key or fob part number, and whether the car has an immobilizer at all. For a Hyundai, model year alone does not settle that question.
- We cut the key or the emergency blade, and on chip-equipped cars we connect a professional programming tool to the OBD-II port.
- We program the new key and test it: unlock, start, run, lock. If you want older keys removed from the car's memory, we handle that at this step.
- We tell you what we did, and we point out any ignition or door-lock wear or damage we noticed so it doesn't surprise you later.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Hyundai key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Hyundai's key history in the US is split by trim more than most brands. When a chip is present, the systems have moved through these stages:
- Late 1990s and early 2000s: some cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60 chip.
- Through the 2000s and early 2010s: Philips ID46 chip keys.
- Mid-to-late 2010s: DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES chip listed as '8A' on some models.
- Newest generations: NXP Hitag-AES smart keys. By model, that means Elantra from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025.
Why we confirm the chip before ordering anything
Sellers label the newest NXP chips inconsistently. Most models are listed as '4A', but the 2021 and newer Elantra shows a '4A' versus '6A' split in listings. A fob that looks identical can be the wrong one. That is why we confirm the chip by fob part number instead of guessing from a photo or a model name, and why we would rather check the car than promise a fob over the phone.

Does your Hyundai even have an immobilizer?
This is the part that surprises people. A very large share of base turn-key Hyundais from 2011 to 2022 shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even Palisade 2020-2021. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.
In practice, trim and build date decide, not the model year alone. On a no-immobilizer car, a plain metal key that is properly cut will start the engine, and no programming is involved. On a chip-equipped trim, that same hardware-store copy will turn the lock and then fail to start the car. We see owners buy a cheap copy for one Hyundai, have it work, then buy the same copy for a different one and have it fail.
That missing immobilizer is also the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave sometimes called the 'Kia Boys' trend. If your car was targeted, you may need more than keys: a repaired ignition lock cylinder, a damaged steering column looked at, and Hyundai's free anti-theft software update, which is a Hyundai service separate from key work. We can sort out the key and ignition side and tell you plainly what we see.

Call (213) 577-1366What if you've lost every key to your Hyundai?
On immobilizer-equipped Hyundais, programming runs through the OBD-II port with professional tools. On most 2006-2019 models, the tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN itself. That makes adding a key and all-keys-lost routine locksmith work, with no dealer involved.
On a base no-immobilizer car, all-keys-lost is simpler still: we cut a new key to fit and there is nothing to program.
The newest generation is where honesty matters. On the Hitag-AES '4A' cars, roughly 2023 and later depending on the model, aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and by model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage per job, and if yours turns out to be dealer-only, we tell you before we start instead of after.
One more check before assuming the worst. If your smart key shows 'key not detected' but the emergency blade still opens the door, the fob battery is often the cause. A battery swap can solve that without any new key.
How much does Hyundai key replacement cost in Whittier?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car in front of us. These are the things that move the cost:
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A plain cut key for a no-immobilizer trim is usually the more economical route. A chip key or smart fob involves a part plus programming.
- The key type: a basic metal key, a flip key, or a push-button smart fob.
- Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost. Copying from a working key is simpler than starting from nothing, which is a good reason to make a spare before the last one disappears.
- The generation. Newer Hitag-AES cars can need more tool time and, in some cases, dealer-level access.
- Fob part-number sourcing, since the same-looking fob can carry a different chip.
- Ignition or door-lock condition. A worn or theft-damaged ignition cylinder may need repair before a key will work properly.
- How many keys you want made.
Dealer or locksmith: what's the fair comparison?
A dealer is the right call in some cases. The newest Hyundai generations may need factory-level or NASTF-credentialed access, and the free anti-theft software update is a dealer service anyway. If we find your car falls into that group, we will say so.
For a large part of the cars we see, especially immobilizer-equipped models from 2006 through 2019 and every no-immobilizer base trim, a locksmith handles the job without dealer involvement. The difference is mostly logistics: we come to the car, at any hour, instead of a tow and a weekday appointment. If you want to see how the process looks across makes, our car keys overview lays it out.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call, you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman who sells the job to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
One practical tip for choosing any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number before work begins, and compare it against the state's records. A company that dodges that question is worth walking away from.
Hyundai key service across Whittier's neighborhoods
Whittier is about 24 miles from our Westwood base, and our vans cover the whole city, including ZIP codes 90601 through 90606. The neighborhoods look different from each other, and so do the calls.
In Uptown Whittier and College Hills, older homes and apartments mean street parking and shared lots, and keys are easy to lose between buildings. Near Michigan Park and the Greenleaf Avenue business district, a car left for a workday can turn a lost key into a long evening. In East Whittier, the mid-century ranch tracts tend to mean driveways and garages, so a lockout or a misplaced fob is usually a quieter problem. Up in Friendly Hills and Rideout Heights, larger hillside homes often mean more cars per household, which is a good reason to keep a spare for each Hyundai. In the Whittwood area and around the Five Points and Murphy Ranch neighborhoods, a lot of the day happens in parking lots, and that is where many of our curb-side calls start.
Whittier sits against the Puente Hills and runs warmer than the coastal plain, with Santa Ana winds pushing hot, dry air across the hillsides now and then. The wet-winter, dry-summer cycle also swells and shrinks the old wood doors in the historic districts. If your Hyundai key shares a ring with the key to a Craftsman home near Uptown that has an original mortise lockset, we can look at both on the same visit.

Hyundai models in our key guide
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Hyundai key if I've lost every key?
In most cases, yes. On immobilizer-equipped models from roughly 2006 through 2019, the tool usually reads or calculates the PIN and we program a new key at the car. On no-immobilizer base trims, we just cut a key. On the newest Hitag-AES generations, coverage is still maturing and some jobs may need the dealer, so we confirm per job and tell you before we begin.
My Hyundai uses a plain metal key. Does it need programming?
Possibly not. Many 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer, and on those, any properly cut metal key starts the car. But trim and build date decide, not model year alone, so we check the car itself before saying whether programming applies.
Why won't my hardware-store copy start my Hyundai?
If your car has an immobilizer chip, a plain metal copy can turn the lock but cannot start the engine, because the car does not recognize a key without a programmed chip. On no-immobilizer trims, a plain copy does start the car. That is why the same copy can work on one Hyundai and fail on another.
My smart key says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, especially if the emergency blade still opens the door. Try a battery swap first. If the car still does not see the fob, we can test it and tell you whether the fob or the car's system is the issue.
My Hyundai was targeted in a theft attempt. Can you help?
We can help with the key and ignition side: ignition lock cylinder repair, key replacement, and a look at what the steering column has been through. Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update for many affected models, which is separate from key work. Tell us what happened and we will explain what we see.
Can you program a 2023 or newer Hyundai?
Sometimes. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented on some newest-generation cars, including an all-keys-lost job on a 2023 Santa Fe with an on-tool PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage before starting.
What do I need to show before you make a key?
We need to confirm you own or are authorized to use the car. Registration and ID that match the vehicle are the usual proof. We do not make keys for a car without that, and it protects you as much as anyone.
Do you come out at night and on weekends?
Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Whittier at any hour.
