What do Hyundai owners in Westmont usually need?

Most Hyundai calls from Westmont fall into a few groups: a lost or broken key, a spare that was never made, a smart fob that stopped being detected, and a car locked with the key inside. Before any of that, we ask three things: what year, which model, and which trim. Hyundai's key history is unusually split by trim, so two cars of the same model and year can need completely different work.

Westmont is densely built. Bungalows and Spanish-style cottages from the 1920s to 1940s sit beside small postwar homes and two-story apartment buildings along Vermont, Normandie and Western avenues, and renters make up a large share of households. That shapes the calls. A lockout often happens at the curb outside an apartment building, or in a driveway when someone is carrying things inside. A lost key tends to surface in households that share one key between several drivers. If that sounds like yours, a spare made on a calm afternoon is a much easier job than one made at midnight.

  • Lost the only key, or every key
  • Adding a spare key or a second fob
  • A broken blade, a worn ignition, or a key that sticks or will not turn
  • A dead fob battery and a 'key not detected' message
  • Locked out with the key inside, which we cover under car lockout service in Westmont
  • Ignition or steering column damage after a theft attempt

Which Hyundai keys have a chip, and which do not?

Here is the key history in plain terms, from what we have verified for Hyundai. When a chip is present, some late-1990s and early-2000s cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60. Through the 2000s and early 2010s the system moved to Philips ID46. In the mid-to-late 2010s you find DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES '8A' listed on some models. The newest generations use NXP Hitag-AES smart keys: Elantra from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025.

Sellers label those newest chips inconsistently. Most models get a '4A' tag, and the 2021 and newer Elantra is split between '4A' and '6A'. So we do not trust a listing title. We confirm the chip by the fob part number and your VIN.

The big caveat is that a very large share of 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022 and even Palisade 2020-2021. On a no-immobilizer car, any properly cut metal key starts the engine and nothing needs programming. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.

That is why a hardware-store copy confuses people. On a no-immobilizer trim, a plain metal copy runs the car. On a chip-equipped trim, the same copy opens the door and then will not start it. Trim and build date decide, not model year alone.

What about the 2021-2023 theft wave and damaged ignitions?

The no-immobilizer cars were the ones targeted in the 2021-2023 theft wave often called the 'Kia Boys' trend. If your Hyundai was one of them, you may need more than a key. Ignition lock cylinders and steering columns are often damaged in theft attempts, and a car that has been forced may turn badly, stick, or not turn at all.

We handle the key and ignition-lock side of that problem. Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update for covered models. We do not perform that update, so contact a Hyundai dealer with your VIN to see whether your car qualifies.

Worn ignitions are a separate issue. On high-mileage cars the ignition and door-lock wafers wear, and the key starts to stick or turn unevenly. Please do not force it. A worn key or lock is usually a simple fix if you stop before it snaps in the cylinder.

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 14 miles from Westmont, and our mobile vans do the work where your car is parked. Here is how a typical job goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and tell us the year, model, trim, and where the car is. If you can read us the VIN from the dashboard or door jamb, that helps.
  2. We ask whether the car has a turn key or a push-button start, and whether any working key still exists. That tells us whether this is an add-a-key job or an all-keys-lost job.
  3. The van arrives at your curb, driveway, or lot. Before we cut or program anything, we verify that the car is yours with ID and registration or title.
  4. We identify the system: no immobilizer, or a chip. If there is a chip, we confirm its type by the fob part number and VIN rather than guessing from the model name.
  5. We cut the key. If the car has an immobilizer, we program it through the OBD-II port with professional tools. A no-immobilizer trim needs only the cut.
  6. We test everything before you pay: starting the car, the doors, the trunk, the fob buttons, and the emergency blade on a smart key.

What if you have lost every Hyundai key?

Losing every key sounds worse than it usually is. On most 2006-2019 Hyundais, the programming tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN through the OBD-II port. That makes add-a-key and all-keys-lost routine locksmith jobs without dealer involvement. A no-immobilizer base car is easier still, since it only needs a properly cut key.

The newest Hitag-AES '4A' generations, roughly 2023 and later depending on the model, are less settled. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost job done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage for your VIN before we start work.

If your car lands in that group, we will tell you plainly and not start a job we cannot finish. For more on this situation, see our page on lost car key replacement in Westmont.

What affects the cost of a Hyundai key in Westmont?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost up or down:

  • Trim and build date. A no-immobilizer car with a plain metal key is usually the more economical route. A chip key costs more, and a smart fob costs more again.
  • Key type: metal blade, flip key, or push-button smart fob.
  • Chip generation, and whether the fob you need is easy to source or has inconsistent labeling.
  • Add-a-key versus all keys lost. If a working key exists, the job is usually simpler.
  • Tool coverage. On the newest models, PIN-read support varies, and a job that needs dealer-level access changes the picture.
  • Ignition or lock repair. If a theft attempt or heavy wear damaged the cylinder, that is separate work.
  • Part quality. Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs can fail intermittently, so we do not treat the lowest-cost part as the better value.
  • Time of day and where the car is parked.

Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Hyundai?

Both are legitimate, and the right one depends on the car. A Hyundai dealer has factory access, which matters for the newest smart-key generations and for any job where aftermarket coverage is not there yet. A dealer is also where you go for Hyundai's anti-theft software update.

For many other cars, especially 2006-2019 models where the PIN can be read or calculated, a locksmith can do the whole job without a tow and without scheduling a service appointment. We drive to the car, which matters if you have lost every key and the car cannot move under its own power. We would rather tell you honestly that your car needs the dealer than take a job we cannot complete.

If you are unsure which category you are in, call first and give us the VIN. We will say which route applies before you commit to anything. You can also read our broader Hyundai key service page for the models we work on.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, it is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. You reach our company, not a call center that sells your job to whichever subcontractor picks it up.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on Hyundais in particular, where the right answer depends on trim, build date and tool coverage, and where guessing costs you money.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. It is a fair question to put to any locksmith company before work begins, including ours, and you should ask for the license number.

Hyundai key service around Westmont

Westmont covers ZIP codes 90044 and 90047. We work along the Vermont Avenue, Western Avenue, Normandie Avenue, Century Boulevard and Manchester Avenue corridors, around the Jesse Owens Park area, and the edges near Vermont Knolls and near Morningside Park in Inglewood. Landmarks like Jesse Owens Community Regional Park, Woodcrest Library, Washington Preparatory High School, and the Vermont and Manchester intersection are easy places to meet.

The local pattern is practical. Apartment lockouts along Vermont and Western often involve a car parked on the street near the building. Business owners along Century Boulevard and Manchester Avenue who depend on a vehicle should not be one lost key from losing a day of work. Rental turnovers in small multifamily buildings are a good moment for a household to make a spare for its car as well.

The weather is not hard on keys here. Westmont is a flat inland coastal plain with morning marine layer and mild temperatures, and corrosion is minor. A worn key is almost always a mileage problem, not a weather problem. If the same damp winter mornings are swelling an older wood door at home, we also do house lock work, and you can see what we offer on our Westmont locksmith page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Hyundai key if I have no original key?

On most 2006-2019 Hyundais, yes. The programming tool can usually read or calculate the immobilizer PIN through the OBD-II port. On no-immobilizer base trims, we only need to cut a key. On the newest models, around 2023 and later, coverage varies by model and tool, and some jobs may need the dealer. We confirm by VIN before starting.

Does my Hyundai key need to be programmed?

It depends on the trim and build date. Many 2011-2022 base turn-key trims had no immobilizer, so a properly cut metal key starts them with no programming. Cars with a chip need programming. Anything built after November 1, 2021 carries an immobilizer.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Hyundai?

Only if your car has no immobilizer. On those trims, a plain metal copy starts the car. On chip-equipped trims, it may open the door but will not start the engine. Trim and build date decide this, not the model year alone.

My smart fob says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause, and the emergency blade can still open the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob may be failing, and we can check it. See our key fob replacement in Westmont page for more.

How do I know if my Hyundai has an immobilizer?

Check the trim and build date. Hyundai's anti-theft software-update list covers many models without immobilizers across 2011-2022, but fitment varies by vehicle. Cars produced after November 1, 2021 always have one. Give us your VIN and we will tell you.

Do newer Hyundais always need the dealer?

No, but some may. On the newest Hitag-AES '4A' generations, aftermarket OBD programming is documented, including an all-keys-lost job on a 2023 Santa Fe. Tool coverage and PIN-read support still vary by model, so we confirm per job and say so if the dealer is the right route.

What do I need to show you before you make a key?

We verify that the car is yours, which means ID and registration or title. This is standard practice for any reputable locksmith and protects you from someone else getting a key to your car.

Do you come out at night and on weekends in Westmont?

Yes. Our line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Westmont, including ZIP codes 90044 and 90047. Our other options are listed on our car key replacement in Westmont page.

Can I get a quote before you come?

We can explain what will affect your cost, and once we know the year, model, trim and whether any key still works, we can tell you what to expect. If you have questions first, you can also reach us through our contact page.
