What do Hyundai owners in Ventura usually need help with?
Most Hyundai calls fall into a few groups: a lost or broken key, a fob the car no longer recognizes, a lockout, or an ignition that has been damaged. In Ventura, where those problems happen follows how people live here. Visitors and vacation rental guests leave cars near the Ventura Pier and Promenade and Ventura Harbor Village, and a key slipped into a beach bag or dropped off a dock does not come back. Students and renters near Ventura College sometimes lock themselves out of the apartment and the car in the same week. People who work along Main Street keep a spare in a drawer at the shop while the car sits at the curb outside.
The coast adds its own wear. Marine layer damp and salt air are hard on metal, and near the shore that is why we replace corroded house locks and gate hardware so often. A key ring that lives in a damp pocket, or a fob that gets rinsed with a wet towel after a day at Surfer's Point, ages faster than one that stays inland. A worn blade or a gritty lock is often what turns a small annoyance into a car that will not open.
Hyundai has one more wrinkle that most other makes do not. Whether you need a chip programmed at all depends on your trim and build date, not just the model year. That is the first thing we sort out on every Hyundai call, and it can change the job completely.
Does your Hyundai even have a transponder chip?
Hyundai's US key history is split by trim more than most brands. Here is the plain version, taken from our verified Hyundai data. When a chip is present, the earliest systems used a Texas 4D-60 chip on some late-1990s and early-2000s cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe. Through the 2000s and early 2010s, Hyundai moved to Philips ID46. In the mid-to-late 2010s, you will see DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with Texas DST-AES listed on some models. The newest generations use NXP Hitag-AES smart keys: the Elantra from 2021, the Santa Fe from 2023, the Sonata and Kona from 2024, and the Tucson from 2025.
Parts sellers label those newest NXP chips inconsistently. Most models get called '4A', while the 2021 and newer Elantra is split between '4A' and '6A'. Because of that, we do not trust a listing. We confirm the chip by the part number on your fob.
Then comes the big caveat. A very large share of 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers the Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even the Palisade 2020-2021. That gap is the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave. We verify chip and immobilizer fitment by model year and by the individual car.
- No immobilizer: a properly cut metal key starts the car, and no programming is needed.
- Immobilizer present: the key needs a matching chip programmed to the car.
- Smart-key trims: the fob has to be programmed, and the newest ones need extra checking on tool coverage.

Call (213) 577-1366How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?
You do not need to tow the car or find a ride to a dealership. We bring the cutting and programming equipment to wherever the Hyundai is parked in Ventura: a driveway, a street, a garage, or a lot near the harbor. Here is what happens.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. We ask for the model, year, trim, and whether the car has a push-button start or a turn key.
- We ask for the VIN and whether you have any working key. If you have a fob, a photo of the back with its part number helps a lot.
- On arrival, we confirm you own or are entitled to the car, which means matching your ID to the registration or title.
- We check whether the car has an immobilizer. If it is a base trim with none, a cut metal key may be all you need.
- If there is a chip, we connect to the OBD-II port with professional tools, read or calculate the immobilizer PIN where the model allows, and program the new key.
- We test every key: door, trunk, ignition or push-button start, and remote functions. We also check that your old keys still work, or remove lost ones from the car's memory when that applies.
What if you have lost every Hyundai key?
All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. For immobilizer-equipped Hyundais, programming runs through the OBD-II port, and on most 2006-2019 models the immobilizer PIN can be read or calculated by the tool. That makes add-a-key and all-keys-lost routine locksmith work, with no dealer visit needed. We can cut a key from the car's VIN and lock data, then program it on site.
If your Hyundai is a base trim with no immobilizer, which is common across 2011-2022, there is nothing to program. Any properly cut metal key starts it. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.
The newest Hitag-AES generations, roughly 2023 and newer depending on the model, are where we are most careful. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost job done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage for your exact car before we start, and we tell you plainly if it needs the dealer.
If you are locked out and also missing your keys, our car lockout service in Ventura is a separate step, and our page on lost car key replacement in Ventura covers the broader situation.

Call (213) 577-1366What about ignition damage and the anti-theft update?
Many Ventura Hyundai owners call us after a theft attempt, not just after losing a key. The 2021-2023 'Kia Boys' theft wave targeted the no-immobilizer base trims, and the usual leftovers are a damaged ignition lock cylinder or steering column. A new key will not fix a ruined cylinder, so we look at the ignition first.
If your car is on Hyundai's anti-theft software-update list, it is worth contacting a Hyundai dealer about the free update. We can repair or replace the ignition lock cylinder and cut a key to match, but the software update is a dealer item, and we say so.
Two other common problems are worth knowing about. The first is a hardware-store copy: on a no-immobilizer trim, a plain metal copy starts the car, but on a chip-equipped trim it will not. The second is a dead fob battery. The dash says 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door. Try a new battery before you assume the fob has failed. For fob-specific work, see our key fob replacement in Ventura page.
What affects the cost of a Hyundai key in Ventura?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car. These are the factors that actually move the price:
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A base trim that takes a cut metal key is usually the more economical route compared with a chip-programmed key or a smart fob.
- Key type: plain metal key, chip key, flip key, or push-button smart key. Smart keys cost more to supply and program.
- Model year and generation. The newest Hitag-AES cars take more tool time and may need extra verification.
- Add-a-key or all keys lost. With a working key already in hand, the job is simpler. With none, we may need to cut by VIN and read the PIN from scratch.
- Ignition or door-lock repair. If the cylinder was damaged, that is added work.
- Time of day and distance. Ventura is about 63 miles from our Westwood storefront, and after-hours calls differ from daytime ones.
- Fob part number. Cheap clones with low-quality chips can fail intermittently, so we confirm what is right for your car.
Should you go to the dealer or call a locksmith?
Both are legitimate options, and which is better depends on your car. A dealer is the right call when your Hyundai is a very new Hitag-AES model whose tool coverage is still limited, when a software update is part of the problem, or when you want warranty-related work. In those cases we say so and do not pretend otherwise.
For most older and mid-era Hyundais, a locksmith is the more practical choice. We come to you, so there is no tow. We can often start the job sooner than a dealer's service schedule allows, and when the car is stranded at a harbor lot or in a driveway, that matters. We can also program the key right there.
Whichever way you go, ask any locksmith for their California BSIS LCO license. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a legitimate company will tell you the number. Our license number is being added to this site. Until it is, ask us for it directly.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Hyundai?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Ventura included. We run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so there is a physical business behind the phone number.
When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a national call center that sends the job to whoever is closest. We are one company with no dispatch middlemen, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
We also tell you when a job is outside what we can do well. That is part of why people call us back. For the full overview of our services in the area, see car key replacement in Ventura.
Where do we help Hyundai owners around Ventura?
Ventura covers a lot of ground, and the car situation changes by neighborhood. We work across the city, including ZIP codes 93001, 93003, and 93004.
In Downtown Ventura and Midtown, you find Victorians and Craftsman homes, condos along the corridors, and shops on Main Street. Lockouts there often mean a car parked at the curb with a spare key sitting inside an older house with period hardware. We can sometimes help with both the car and the front door in one visit.
On the Westside near Ventura Avenue and in Pierpont, the beach cottages and 1920s bungalows sit close to the salt air. In Ventura Keys, waterfront homes with private docks mean cars that live in damp, salty conditions, which is hard on key blades and door locks.
Up in Hobson Heights, Ondulando, and Clearpoint, the hillside ranch and custom homes mean driveways on slopes and cars parked in the sun. The East End is mostly later tract housing with driveways and garages. Near Ventura College, the College Area has apartments where a lockout often involves both the car and the unit.
We also see calls from visitors at the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center, Mission San Buenaventura, Pacific View Mall, and Community Memorial Hospital, where a key lost in the middle of a day is a real disruption. Frequently asked questions
Does my Hyundai need a chip programmed?
It depends on the trim and build date. Many 2011-2022 base turn-key Hyundais shipped with no immobilizer, so a properly cut metal key starts them. Immobilizers became standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021. We check your VIN and trim to confirm before we cut or program anything.
Can you make a Hyundai key if I lost all of them?
In most cases, yes. On immobilizer-equipped models, programming runs through the OBD-II port, and on most 2006-2019 cars the PIN can be read or calculated. On the newest models, around 2023 and later, coverage varies and some jobs may need the dealer. We confirm that for your car before starting.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Hyundai?
Only if your car has no immobilizer. On a no-chip base trim, a plain metal copy usually starts it. On a chip-equipped trim, it will open the door but not start the car. Trim and build date decide, not model year alone.
My Hyundai says 'key not detected.' Is the fob broken?
Often the battery is dead. The emergency blade inside the fob can still open the door, but the car will not see the fob. Replace the battery first. If the message continues, the fob may need testing or reprogramming.
Do you come to me in Ventura, or do I have to bring the car?
We come to you. Our mobile vans bring cutting and programming equipment to your driveway, street, garage, or lot. We also have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, but you do not need to drive the car there.
My Hyundai was targeted in a theft attempt. Can you help?
We can repair or replace a damaged ignition lock cylinder and cut or program a key to match. The free anti-theft software update on Hyundai's list is a dealer item, so we recommend contacting a Hyundai dealer for that. We tell you which parts of the job are ours.
What should I have ready when I call?
Your Hyundai's model, year, and trim, the VIN, your ID, and proof of ownership such as the registration. If you have an old fob, a photo of the part number on the back helps. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate in California?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work starts. A real company will give you the number without hesitation. You can also reach us through our contact page if you want details about how we work.
