What do BMW owners in Valley Village usually need?
Most BMW calls in Valley Village are ordinary ones: a spare key that never got made, a fob that no longer holds a charge, a 'key not detected' message on the morning you need to leave, or a key locked inside the car. Sometimes it is a lost key, which is a different and more involved conversation.
Where it happens follows how people live here. Interior streets are lined with 1930s and 40s cottages and ranch homes, and the garden apartments and small condo buildings along Magnolia, Riverside, and Laurel Canyon mean many residents come and go from a building rather than a single front door. A lockout can happen at any of those places. We work wherever the car is: driveway, garage, curb, or apartment lot.
The first thing we need from you is the year and model, because a BMW from 2005 and a BMW from 2022 are completely different jobs. That is why most of this page is about key generations.
How does mobile BMW key service work at the curb?
Wilshire Lock & Key works from a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile vans. Valley Village is about 13 miles from that base, and the van brings the equipment to the car instead of the car going to a shop.
- You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers at any hour, any day. Tell us the year, model, and how many working keys you still have.
- We tell you honestly which key era your car belongs to and whether it is curbside work or a dealer-only job. If it is dealer-only, we say so on the phone rather than send a van for nothing.
- At the car, we confirm the vehicle by VIN and ask you to show that you own it.
- We prepare the key and program it with equipment suited to that generation of BMW.
- We test everything: remote buttons, door entry, starting the car, and on keyless cars the Start button and handle response. A spare you haven't tested isn't really a spare.
Which BMW key generation is yours?
BMW key systems fall into clear eras, and the era decides almost everything about the job. This is a plain summary. We confirm your exact car by VIN or in person, because model years overlap and nobody should guess on a key.
- EWS era, through the mid-2000s (and to 2010 on the E83 X3): a remote-head 'diamond' key with the ID44 (PCF7935) chip.
- CAS era, starting with the 2002 E65 7-series and running through the 2004 E60 5-series, 2006 E90 3-series, 2007 E70 X5, and 2013-2015 E84 X1: an ID46 (PCF7945/Hitag2) fob that inserts into a dash slot, with a Start button. The CAS module itself comes in generations from CAS1 to CAS3+.
- F-chassis (F01 7-series 2009, F10 5-series 2011, F25 X3 2011, F30 3-series 2012, F15 X5 2014, F48 X1 2016): true keyless smart fobs on the ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro) chip. The F01, F10, and F25 use CAS4/CAS4+ modules, while the F30, F15, and F48 use FEM/BDC body modules.
- G-chassis, from the 2016 G11 7-series onward: the BDC2 body controller and the N5F-ID21A-family 434 MHz fob.
- Newest generations (G70 7-series 2023, U11 X1 2023, G60 5-series 2024, G45 X3 2025): Digital Key architectures with no established aftermarket path yet.

Call (213) 577-1366What can be done at the curb, era by era?
Here is the honest picture. 'Possible' is not the same as 'quick' or 'simple,' and we would rather explain that now than at the car.
- EWS cars: routine specialist work. Keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench, and that includes all-keys-lost.
- CAS1 to CAS3+ cars (roughly 2002-2015 depending on model): documented OBD add-a-key and all-keys-lost procedures exist. Late CAS3+ firmware can need a flash downgrade, which adds work.
- CAS4/CAS4+ and FEM/BDC F-chassis cars (2009-2022 depending on model): advanced specialist jobs. Some tools work through the OBD port and others require bench module work. It can be done, but only with dedicated BMW equipment.
- G-chassis BDC2 cars (2016 and newer): adding a key is specialist-possible when you have a working key in hand.
- G70, U11, G60, and G45: dealer-only for key work.
What if you have lost every BMW key?
All-keys-lost is where BMW differs most by era. On EWS cars and CAS-era cars we have established procedures, and it is legitimate work we take on. F-chassis cars are advanced jobs that depend on which module your car has and which tools it needs, and we will tell you which path applies before we start.
On G-chassis cars with the BDC2 controller, all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only. One aftermarket route is advertised for it, but it locks the car against future dealer keys. We don't use it, and we won't promise G-series all-keys-lost. On the G70, U11, G60, and G45, key work belongs to the dealer, period.
BMW does not use the NASTF SDRM process the way domestic makes do, and dealer paths require proof of ownership. Keep your registration or title and photo ID handy. If you are down to your last working G-series key, call us before it goes missing, because adding a key is far easier than starting from nothing. Our page on lost car key replacement in Valley Village covers the general process.
Is it really a key problem?
Many BMW 'key problems' are something else, and sorting that out first can save you a bigger bill. These are the ones we see most often:
- Dead rechargeable key batteries on 2000s EWS and slot-key cars. The remote dies but the chip still starts the car.
- Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars, often misdiagnosed as a key fault.
- Worn dash key slots and fobs that no longer hold a charge.
- Dead coin cells in F and G-chassis smart fobs. The car says 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door.
- Cracked key shells, broken flip hinges on the E83, and worn buttons.
- Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults that get blamed on the key.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a BMW key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because honest pricing depends on facts we only have once we know your car. Here is what moves the cost:
- The key era and module generation. An EWS key and an F-chassis smart fob are very different amounts of equipment and labor.
- Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost. Having a working key makes nearly every job lighter.
- Whether the job is done through the OBD port or needs bench module work.
- Late CAS3+ firmware that needs a flash downgrade first.
- What you actually need: a battery or shell repair is a lighter-cost option than a full new fob.
- Time of day and distance. We serve 140 cities, and a call at 3 a.m. is a different job from a weekday visit.
- Whether the car is dealer-only. In that case our honest quote is a referral, not a bill.
Dealer or locksmith: which one for your BMW?
Neither is always right. For the newest generations (G70, U11, G60, G45), and for all-keys-lost on G-chassis BDC2 cars, the dealer is the route, and we'll tell you so. A dealer visit also means getting the car there.
For older cars, from EWS through CAS and many F-chassis models, a specialist locksmith coming to you is usually the more economical route, since you skip the trip to a dealership. Whichever way you go, ask whoever does the work to explain exactly what happens to the car's existing keys afterward. Our overview of BMW key services and the broader car keys guide go deeper on this.
What should Valley Village BMW owners know locally?
Valley Village sits in ZIP 91607, and we work across all of it: the Magnolia Boulevard corridor, the Chandler Boulevard corridor along the Metro G Line busway, the Riverside Drive corridor, the Laurel Canyon Boulevard corridor, and the Woodbridge Park edge near Studio City. If you are near Valley Village Park, Colfax Charter Elementary, or Adat Ari El Synagogue, we can come to you there too.
The neighborhood split from North Hollywood in 1991, and its interior blocks skew more owner-occupied than the surrounding area. In practice that means a mix of homeowners who want a spare fob before one gets lost and apartment residents along Laurel Canyon who get locked out. If a BMW key ends up inside the car, our car lockout service in Valley Village is the starting point.
We also do the house side here: rekeys after home sales on the interior streets, mailbox lock replacement in garden apartment complexes, and smart locks in remodeled 1940s cottages. Hot, dry summers make wood doors and frames expand, which can make a lock stick, but that is a door issue, not a key issue. Our Valley Village hub page lists everything we handle in the neighborhood.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a Westwood storefront and mobile vans. One company answers your call and sends the technician, with no dispatch middlemen in between. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before work starts.
For the full picture on cars in the neighborhood, see our car key replacement in Valley Village page. If your problem is a worn or dead fob, our key fob replacement page applies. To reach us in writing, use the contact page, or call (213) 577-1366 any hour.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a BMW key at my home in Valley Village?
For many BMWs, yes. EWS, CAS, and many F-chassis cars can be handled by mobile service with the right equipment. G-chassis all-keys-lost and the newest generations are dealer-only, and we will say so on the phone.
Do I need to bring the car anywhere?
No. The van comes to where the car is parked, whether that is a driveway, a street, or an apartment lot. The exception is a dealer-only job, where the dealer process applies.
I lost the only key to my G-series BMW. What now?
On G-chassis BDC2 cars, all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only. The one advertised aftermarket route locks the car against future dealer keys, so we don't use it. Bring proof of ownership to the dealer.
My BMW says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Often not. On F and G-chassis cars a dead coin cell is a common cause, and the emergency blade still opens the door. Comfort Access handle sensor faults can also look like a key problem.
Can you do a 2024 5-series or 2025 X3?
No. The G60 and G45 use Digital Key architectures, and key work on them is dealer-only. The same applies to the G70 7-series and the U11 X1.
Is my steering lock problem a key issue?
On E-series slot-key cars, electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures are often misdiagnosed as key faults. We check that before programming a new key, since a new key will not fix a failed ELV.
What proof of ownership will you ask for?
We confirm the car by VIN and ask you to show that you own it, typically registration or title and photo ID. Dealer routes for BMW also require proof of ownership.
How do you price a BMW key without numbers on the site?
The cost depends on the key era, module generation, add-a-key versus all-keys-lost, and whether bench work is needed. Give us the year and model on the phone and we will explain what drives your job.
