Which BMW X1 do you have? Three key eras
The X1 has changed more under the skin than most people expect. Between 2013 and 2026 it went through three generations, and each one has a different key, a different body controller and a different answer to the question 'can a locksmith do this, or do I have to go to the dealer?' Before anything else, it helps to know which era your car belongs to.
This page walks through all three. It is written around what an owner in each era actually needs, not around a generic 'we make BMW keys' claim. Where our information is solid, we say so. Where it is not, we say that too, and we confirm the exact setup by VIN before we touch anything. A year-by-year key table sits elsewhere on this page, and what follows is the explanation behind it. If you want the wider picture for the brand, our BMW key page covers the other models, and the car keys overview covers everything else we do on the automotive side.
- E84, 2013-2015: slot-style fob, ID46 chip, 315 MHz, OBD programming, all-keys-lost is possible.
- F48, 2016-2022: BDC body controller, ID49 smart key family, push-button start, OBD programming with the right tool license, all-keys-lost is possible.
- U11, 2023-2026: newest BDC architecture, treated as dealer-only. No aftermarket add-key or all-keys-lost route is established.
E84 X1 (2013-2015): what owners of the first generation need
The US-market E84 uses a CAS system, and the fob is the slot type: you push it into a slot in the dash rather than leaving it in your pocket. The fob belongs to the KR55WK49127 family, carries an ID46 chip (the PCF7945, a Hitag2 part) and works at 315 MHz. That is the combination listed in the parts catalog for the 2009-2015 first-generation X1, and it is what we work from.
You may see a different claim online. At least one locksmith page describes the 2013-2015 X1 as an EWS4 car with an ID44 chip. We checked that against the catalog fitment and it does not line up, so we treat it as unreliable. That said, we do not guess on a customer's car. If your X1 is on the border of a production change or has had a module replaced, we confirm what is actually in it by VIN before cutting or programming anything.
Our data also tags these years as push-to-start. In practice, most US trims of this generation are the slot-fob type without Comfort Access, so expect to insert the fob into the dash. If yours is one of the exceptions, VIN confirmation settles it.
For an E84 owner, the practical news is good. Add-a-key and all-keys-lost are both documented OBD procedures for this CAS family. You do not need the original key in hand to get a working one made, and you generally do not need the dealer. The car has a mechanical backup key inside the fob, so the door can be opened even if the battery inside the fob is flat.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366F48 X1 (2016-2022): BDC cars with smart keys
In 2016 the X1 moved to the F48 platform and the key changed with it. These cars use a BDC body controller and a smart key in the ID49 family, with push-button start as standard. Some cars also have Comfort Access, which lets you unlock by touching the door handle while the fob is in your pocket or bag.
Here is where we are careful. The ID49 chip family is stated from the common F-series key. We have not confirmed it against an F48-specific listing, so we describe it as unverified and confirm the exact setup by VIN. What is better documented is the programming side: the tool maker Abrites lists the F48 as fully OBD-programmable with the right license, firmware version permitting. Newer BDC firmware versions need the newer license, and some tools handle those cars by preprocessing the BDC module on the bench.
In plain terms, this is advanced specialist work but it is not dealer-only. Add-a-key and all-keys-lost are both possible by OBD on these years. Not every locksmith has the tools for the newer firmware, and that is the biggest reason a quote from one shop can look nothing like another's. We look at the car and the VIN first, then tell you what the job involves.
These fobs also have a mechanical backup key and an emergency start position, so a dead coin cell is an annoyance rather than a stranding.
U11 X1 (2023-2026): why we are upfront that this one is dealer-only
The current X1 is built on BMW's FAAR platform with the newest BDC architecture, and BMW Digital Key support is part of the picture on equipped cars. We have not established any aftermarket way to add a key or to recover from all keys lost on this generation, so we treat it as dealer-only. We would rather say that plainly than take a deposit on a job we cannot finish.
Duplicating a key on a U11 also needs an original key. There is no all-keys-lost path for these years in our data. If you have lost every key to a 2023-2026 X1, the realistic route is the dealer, and you should expect that path to be the expensive one.
We do not publish a chip family for these years, because we do not have a verified one. The key is still a smart-proximity fob with push-button start and a mechanical backup key. If you have a U11 and a key problem that is not a lost key, such as a dead coin cell, a 'key not detected' warning or Digital Key enrollment trouble, call us anyway. Some of those are simple, and some are a dealer matter. We will tell you which, even if the answer is that we are not the right call.

Call (213) 577-1366Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes by era
The distinction matters for the X1 more than it does for many cars, because the answer flips between generations. A duplicate means you still have at least one working key. All keys lost means you have none, and the car's immobilizer has to accept a brand-new key from scratch.
- E84 (2013-2015): the original key is not needed. Both add-a-key and all-keys-lost are documented OBD procedures for this CAS family.
- F48 (2016-2022): the original key is not needed. Both are possible by OBD, depending on the BDC firmware version and the tool license required for it.
- U11 (2023-2026): an original key is needed to duplicate, and all-keys-lost is not an established aftermarket job. Dealer-only.
How we handle an X1 key job, step by step
Every X1 job starts with the same questions, because the generation decides everything after it. This is how it goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers around the clock, every day of the year. Tell us the model year, whether you have any working key, and where the car is.
- We confirm the generation. For 2013-2015 we check by VIN that the car matches the ID46 slot-fob setup and not the EWS4/ID44 claim. For 2016-2022 we confirm the chip family and BDC firmware situation. For 2023-2026 we tell you straight away if it is a dealer job.
- We tell you what the job involves and what drives the cost, then go ahead only when you are comfortable.
- We come to the car with a mobile van or, if it suits you, you bring the car to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. We cut the mechanical key as needed and program the new fob through the OBD port.
- We test everything before we leave: start, lock and unlock, the emergency backup key, and any remaining keys you already own so that none were disturbed.
What affects the cost of an X1 key replacement?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because an honest number depends on the car in front of us. What we can do is explain the things that move it, so a quote makes sense when you get it.
- The generation. E84 fobs and procedures are the more economical end. F48 keys cost more, and the lost-fob replacement is noticeably costlier than an E-series one. U11 work sits with the dealer, and that route is the most expensive.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car where one still works is a lighter job than all keys lost, where the system has to be reset to accept a new key.
- BDC firmware on F48 cars. Newer firmware needs a newer tool license, and some cars need the module preprocessed on the bench, which adds time and work.
- The fob itself. A genuine fob, an aftermarket fob and a used one are different things, and the fob must match the car's chip family and frequency.
- Where and when. A van coming to you at night costs more to run than a daytime visit to our shop. Distance within our service area also plays a part.
- Damage to repair. A worn dash key slot or a cracked shell is separate from the programming itself.

Call (213) 577-1366Common X1 key problems we see in the data
Not every key problem needs a new key. Some are cheaper to fix than to replace, and we would rather start there.
On the E84, the rechargeable fob battery wears out. The dash slot still reads the fob, so the car will often start anyway. Electronic steering-lock (ELV) faults can look like key failures, even though the key is fine. The dash key slot itself wears, and fob shells crack. A new key will not fix an ELV fault or a worn slot, so a proper diagnosis comes first.
On the F48, the most common issue is a dead coin cell in the fob. The car shows a 'key not detected' warning, but the emergency start position still works, so you can usually drive home. Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults on equipped cars can also mimic a dead key. If your door handle does not respond but the fob works the start button, the fob is probably fine.
On the U11, a dead coin cell gives the same 'key not detected' message. BMW Digital Key enrollment problems with a phone or card on equipped cars are another reported issue. Those can be software or account matters rather than a hardware fault, so we will say so if that is what it looks like.
When to call us and when to go to the dealer
Call us for a 2013-2022 X1 when you have lost your only key, lost all of them, want a spare while one still works, or have a fob that has stopped working and you are not sure why. We have been in business since 1987, we are one company with a storefront and mobile vans rather than a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so the van can generally reach you wherever the car is.
Go to the dealer for a 2023-2026 X1 when you have lost the key, or need anything that touches the newest BDC or Digital Key programming. If you are not sure which generation you have, call us first. A quick VIN check costs you nothing and can save you a tow in the wrong direction.
One more point on trust. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work. That includes us. Do not be shy about asking.
If you would like to talk it through or send details, use the contact page or call us directly. You can also read more about what we do on the Wilshire Lock & Key home page.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new key for a 2014 BMW X1 if I have lost all of them?
Yes, generally. The 2013-2015 E84 uses a CAS system and documented OBD procedures cover both add-a-key and all-keys-lost, with no original key needed. We still confirm the car by VIN first, because one source claims a different system for these years and we do not guess.
Can you replace a lost key on a 2024 BMW X1?
Not as far as we can establish. The 2023-2026 U11 generation is dealer-only in our data, with no aftermarket all-keys-lost route and an original key needed to duplicate. We would rather tell you that on the phone than waste your time.
What chip does a BMW X1 key use?
The 2013-2015 E84 fob uses an ID46 chip (PCF7945, Hitag2) at 315 MHz, which is verified against the catalog. The 2016-2022 F48 is in the ID49 smart key family, but that is not confirmed against an F48-specific listing, so we confirm by VIN. For 2023-2026 we do not have a verified chip family.
Do I need my original key to get a spare made?
Not for 2013-2022 cars. Both the E84 and the F48 can have keys added by OBD without the original key. For 2023-2026 U11 cars, an original key is needed to duplicate.
My X1 says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new key?
Often not. On F48 and U11 cars the usual cause is a dead coin cell in the fob, and the emergency start position will normally still start the car. On an older E84, a flat fob battery usually still lets the slot read the fob. If the battery is fine, call us and we will work out what else is going on.
Can I buy a fob online and have you program it?
Call us before you buy. The fob has to match your car's chip family and frequency, and a wrong or poor-quality fob is a common reason a job fails. For an E84 we look for the KR55WK49127 family at 315 MHz. For other years we confirm by VIN.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Both work. Our mobile vans come to the car, which is the sensible choice if you have no working key. You can also bring it to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. The line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, every day.
Is a worn dash key slot something you can help with?
A worn slot is a known E84 issue and a new key will not cure it. We will look at the slot and the fob before recommending anything, because the fix may be repair or a fresh fob shell rather than new programming.
How do I know a locksmith is properly licensed in California?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number from any locksmith before they begin, and check it with the state if you wish.
