Why a 3 Series key is never just one job
Across the model years covered here, the 3 Series key has changed form four times. A 2002 car uses a remote-head key with a mechanical blade. A 2009 car uses a fob that slides into a slot in the dash. A 2016 car uses a push-button smart key talking to a body module called FEM. A 2021 car uses a newer controller, BDC2, and that one changes what an independent locksmith can and cannot do.
So the first thing we ask is not just the year but the body style and VIN. The year-by-year table on this page lists key type, chip family and programming method for every model year. This text explains what those entries mean for the person standing next to the car, and where the data is clean versus where we need to look at the car before promising anything.
Three spots deserve a flag up front. 2006, 2012 and 2013 each straddle two generations, because coupes and convertibles kept the older platform while the sedan moved on. And 2022 onward carries chip information over from earlier G-series listings that was not separately confirmed. For those years we confirm the exact setup by VIN. For other BMW models, see our BMW key hub, or browse all car key services.
What does an E46 3 Series (1999-2006) need?
The E46 uses the EWS3/EWS4 immobilizer with an ID44 (PCF7935) chip in a remote-head 'diamond' key. The blade is an HU92 two-track profile. The sedan ran through 2005; the coupe and convertible carried into 2006 alongside the new E90 sedan. Our year-by-year data starts at 2000, so if you own a 1999 we confirm by VIN.
This is the friendliest era for a lost-key situation. A working key is not required: new keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench, using EWS3-class tools such as AK90 or Abrites, or ordered pre-cut by VIN. All-keys-lost is routine specialist work here, not a dealer-only problem. The data lists the programming method as EEPROM, which means the job centers on the immobilizer module's stored data rather than a simple plug-in-and-pair at the OBD port.
The E46 key also carries a mechanical blade, and the chip and the remote are separate systems. That matters in the problems section below: a key with dead buttons can still start the car.
What do E90, E91, E92 and E93 cars (2006-2013) need?
These are CAS-era cars. The fob carries an ID46 (PCF7945, Hitag2) chip and slides into a slot in the dash, and you press the Start button to fire the car. Hands-free Comfort Access was optional, so some cars have it and some do not. The immobilizer module is CAS2 on the earliest cars and CAS3 or CAS3+ later, and we confirm which one by VIN.
Add-a-key and all-keys-lost are documented OBD procedures on CAS3 and CAS3+ cars, and neither needs a working key. One wrinkle: late CAS3+ units with 'ISTAP' firmware can need a flash downgrade first. That is specialist work, not a reason to go to the dealer, but it is one reason we look at the car before quoting.
Watch the transition years. A 2006 sedan is the new E90, but a 2006 coupe or convertible is still an E46 with the older ID44 diamond key. In 2012 and 2013 it flips the other way: the coupe and convertible (E92/E93) keep the CAS slot fob while the sedan has moved to the F30. The data marks those years as conflicting, which is our cue to confirm body style and VIN first.

Call (213) 577-1366What do F30, F31 and F34 cars (2012-2018) need?
The F-series moved to the FEM body module and an ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro) smart key, with push-button start standard. Vendor key catalogs list the same hardware across 2012-2018 3 Series, which is why the table shows one key family for the whole run. As noted above, 2012 and 2013 depend on body style, and we confirm by VIN.
This is advanced specialist work. Most tools preprocess the module on the bench, and Abrites documents a full OBD path for F-series FEM and BDC cars, including all-keys-lost. A working key is not required. We quote it as a specialist job rather than sending you to the dealer, but expect it to involve more equipment and more care than an E-series car.
These keys still have a mechanical backup blade, and the car has an emergency start position for when the fob battery dies, so a dead coin cell does not by itself mean the key is lost.
What do G20 cars (2019-2026) need?
The G20 uses the BDC2 body controller and a 434 MHz smart key in the N5F-ID21A family, with an ID49 (Hitag Pro) chip per the G-series catalog listings that cover 2015-2021. For 2019 through 2021 the chip data is verified. For 2022 through 2026 it is carried over from those listings and was not separately confirmed, and facelifted cars may use a newer fob. We confirm by VIN before we quote.
Here the rules change. If you have a working key, add-a-key is possible for specialists, using tools such as Autel BDC02 licenses. If you have lost every key, that is dealer territory. Xhorse's BDC2 bench adapter explicitly cannot do all-keys-lost. The one advertised aftermarket route, Yanhua ACDP, carries the vendor's own warning that it locks the BDC2 against future dealer keys. We do not offer it, because trading a lost key for a car the dealer can no longer help is a bad deal.
The data also leaves open whether a secure-data registration is required on these cars, so we check rather than assume. If your G20 uses BMW Digital Key on a phone or card, mention it on the first call, since enrollment problems are a known issue on equipped cars.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes by era?
Making a spare while you still hold a working key is the lighter-cost way to handle every one of these cars, and on a G20 it is the difference between an independent-locksmith job and a dealer visit. Here is how the options split.
Where a year is flagged conflicting or unverified, these lines apply to the platform your VIN shows, not the calendar year alone.
- E46 (2000-2006 in our table): original key not needed. All-keys-lost is routine, with keys originated from EWS data or ordered pre-cut by VIN.
- E90-E93 (2006-2013): original key not needed. All-keys-lost is a documented OBD procedure, with a possible firmware downgrade on late CAS3+ cars.
- F30/F31/F34 (2012-2018): original key not needed. All-keys-lost is specialist work through the FEM module.
- G20 (2019-2026): a working key is needed for add-a-key. All-keys-lost is dealer territory, and we tell you so rather than risk the car.

Call (213) 577-1366Is 3 Series key programming OBD or dealer-only?
The honest answer: OBD for nearly all of these cars, dealer-only in exactly one situation. E90 through F-series cars program through the OBD port with specialist tools, and the E46 works from the EWS module data. The G20 also programs by OBD for add-a-key, but once the last working key is gone, the safe independent route closes. That is the single dealer-only case on this page.
Here is how a typical job runs, and David oversees it as owner and lead technician.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, whether it is a sedan, coupe, convertible or wagon, and how many working keys you still have.
- We confirm the chassis and key family by VIN. This is essential for 2006, 2012, 2013 and 2022 onward, where the data is conflicting or unverified.
- We tell you plainly whether it is work we do or a dealer job, before anyone starts.
- Our mobile van comes to you, or you bring the car to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. We cut the blade and program the key.
- We test everything: starting, locking, the remote buttons and the mechanical backup, before the job is done.
What affects the cost of a 3 Series key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because two cars from the same model year can land in very different places. Here is what moves the price:
Once we have your VIN and know what you are holding, we give you a real quote. If the dealer is the right call for your car, we will say so.
- Generation: F-series fobs are costlier than E-series keys, and G20 replacement is expensive and often involves the dealer.
- Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost: with a working key in hand, adding a key is usually the more economical route.
- Module work: F-series cars may need bench preprocessing, and late CAS3+ cars may need a firmware downgrade first.
- VIN confirmation: on facelifted G20 cars the correct fob may differ from the catalog listing.
- Key condition: a worn blade or cracked shell may be fixable without replacing the whole key.
- Location: a van visit to your car versus bringing it to the storefront.
What goes wrong with 3 Series keys?
Most calls are not a truly lost key. By era, the problems in our data are:
The symptom and the cause are not always the same. A key that will not start the car might need a battery, a new shell or a module check rather than a new key, and an ELV steering-lock fault is not fixed by cutting another key. We diagnose first so you do not pay for a key you do not need.
- E46: dead rechargeable remote battery, so the buttons stop but the chip still starts the car; worn HU-series blades and cracked shells; and an EWS no-start where the key turns but the engine will not crank, from a key and module sync fault.
- E90-E93: dead or worn-out rechargeable fob battery, though the dash slot still reads the fob and the car usually starts; electronic steering-lock (ELV) faults that look like key failures; a worn dash slot and cracked fob shells.
- F-series: a dead coin cell with a 'key not detected' warning, while the emergency start position still works; Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults on equipped cars.
- G20: a dead coin cell with the same 'key not detected' warning, and Digital Key enrollment issues on equipped cars.

Call (213) 577-1366When should you call us, and when the dealer?
Call us for E46, E90-series and F-series cars in any key situation, including all keys lost, and for a G20 when you have at least one working key. Call the dealer for a G20 with every key gone. If you are unsure which situation you are in, call anyway. We would rather tell you the truth on the phone than have you guess.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a BMW 3 Series key if I have lost every key?
It depends on the generation. E46, E90-E93 and F-series cars can be done by specialists without a working key. On 2019 and newer G20 cars, all-keys-lost is dealer territory, and we do not use the aftermarket route that can lock the BDC2 against future dealer keys.
Do I need my original key for a 2019 or newer 3 Series?
For add-a-key, yes. G20 cars need a working key for specialist programming. Make a spare while you still have one, because losing the last key sends you to the dealer.
How do I know which key my 3 Series uses?
Start with the year-by-year table, then confirm with body style and VIN. 2006, 2012 and 2013 straddle two generations, and 2022 onward is unverified in our data, so we confirm the exact setup by VIN before quoting.
My remote buttons stopped working but the car starts. Do I need a new key?
Often not. On E46 and E90-era cars the chip can still start the car while the rechargeable remote battery is dead. On F-series and G20 cars, a dead coin cell gives a 'key not detected' warning. We check the battery and shell first.
Is an E46 key still a transponder key with a mechanical blade?
Yes. It is an ID44 (PCF7935) remote-head 'diamond' key on an HU92 two-track blade, used with the EWS immobilizer. Worn blades and cracked shells are common on these cars.
How much does a 3 Series key cost?
We do not publish numbers, because the price depends on generation, whether you need add-a-key or all-keys-lost, module work, and the fob itself. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will quote you.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Either. Our mobile vans serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. The line is answered around the clock.
