What do Hyundai owners in Valley Glen usually need?

Most calls come down to a few situations: a key that has gone missing, a spare that was never made, a fob that quit working, or a car that a thief has already been into. Hyundai is different from most makes in one important way. The right answer depends on the trim and build date of your specific car, not just the model and year. Some Hyundais carry a transponder chip and need programming. Many base models from 2011 to 2022 have no immobilizer at all, and a plain cut metal key starts them.

Where these problems show up tracks the housing. Valley Glen is mostly postwar single-family tracts from the 1940s and 50s, with apartment buildings concentrated along Victory and Vanowen. A car sitting in front of a tract house or at an apartment building is where a lockout or a lost key usually turns into a phone call. Lockouts at student rentals near Los Angeles Valley College are another scenario we plan for, since a key can easily end up in the wrong place in a shared household.

The requests we hear most for Hyundais are:

  • A spare or duplicate key for a car that currently has only one
  • All keys lost, with no working key to copy
  • A smart fob that stopped working or a battery that seems dead
  • A locked-out car, with the key inside or missing
  • A worn key that sticks in the ignition or door
  • Ignition or steering column damage after a theft attempt

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

You do not need to tow the car anywhere. Our mobile vans come to wherever the Hyundai is parked: your driveway, an apartment lot, a street near campus, or your workplace. Our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood backs up the vans, and Valley Glen sits about 13 miles from it. The call itself goes to a person at (213) 577-1366, any hour of any day.

  1. Call and tell us the make, model, year, trim, and whether the car uses a turn key or a push-button start. Tell us whether any working key exists.
  2. We ask a few questions to work out whether your car likely has an immobilizer. On a base turn-key trim, that changes the whole job and often the cost.
  3. A van comes to the car. We'll want to see that the car is yours, such as registration or title and your ID, and you should expect that from any reputable locksmith.
  4. We cut the key and, if the car has a chip, program it through the OBD-II port with professional tools. On smart-key cars we match the fob by part number first.
  5. We test every key: door, trunk if applicable, ignition or push-button start, and remote functions. You see it work before we leave.

Does your Hyundai even have a chip? Key eras in plain terms

Hyundai's US key history is split by trim more than most brands. Where a chip is present, the systems moved through several generations. Some late-1990s and early-2000s cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60 chip. Through the 2000s and early 2010s, Hyundai used the Philips ID46. In the mid-to-late 2010s you see DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES chip listed on some models. The newest generations use NXP Hitag-AES smart keys, arriving by model: Elantra from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025.

Sellers label those newest chips inconsistently. Most are called '4A', but the 2021 and newer Elantra is split between '4A' and '6A' listings. That is why we confirm the chip by the fob part number rather than trusting a listing.

The part that surprises people is the other end of the range. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers a very large share of base turn-key trims that shipped with no immobilizer at all: Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even Palisade 2020-2021. On those cars, a hardware-store copy of the metal key starts the engine. On a chip-equipped trim, the same copy turns the lock and does nothing else. Trim and build date decide it, not model year alone, and we verify it on your actual car. For a broader look at the brand, see our Hyundai key guide.

  • No immobilizer: any properly cut metal key starts the car, so no programming is needed
  • Chip key or flip key: needs OBD-II programming with professional tools
  • Smart fob: needs matching by part number and programming, with the emergency blade cut separately
  • Built after November 1, 2021: Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after that date, so later builds always carry a chip

What happens if you've lost every Hyundai key?

All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On most 2006-2019 Hyundais, the immobilizer PIN can be read or calculated by the programming tool, so add-a-key and all-keys-lost are routine locksmith work that does not involve the dealer. If your car is a base no-immobilizer trim, it can be even simpler: we cut a metal key that fits and the car starts. We establish which situation you're in before anything else, because it decides the approach.

The newest Hitag-AES '4A' generations, roughly 2023 and later depending on the model, are less settled. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented. For instance, a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost job has been done with an Autel IM-series tool and an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage for your VIN and car before we promise anything, and if your car turns out to be a dealer-only case, we'll tell you plainly rather than start a job we can't finish.

Smart fobs, dead batteries and cheap clones

If your dash says 'key not detected' but the emergency blade still opens the door, a dead fob battery is the first thing to check. It is a much smaller problem than a failed fob, and we'd rather tell you that over the phone than send a van for it. If the battery is fine and the fob still won't communicate, the fob may need replacing and programming. Our key fob replacement in Valley Glen page covers that in detail.

One more thing we see: low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that work for a while and then fail intermittently. The car starts on Monday and not on Thursday. Those are frustrating because they look like a car problem. If a fob has been flaky since the day it was made, replacing it with a properly matched one usually clears it up.

Theft-wave cars: ignition damage and Hyundai's software update

The no-immobilizer trims are the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave sometimes called the 'Kia Boys' trend. Owners of those cars often come to us because the ignition lock cylinder or steering column was damaged in an attempt. In that situation a new key alone does not fix anything. The ignition may need repair or replacement first, and then a key that fits the repaired cylinder.

Separately, Hyundai offers a free anti-theft software update for the affected models. That is something to arrange with a Hyundai dealer, not with us, and it's worth doing if your car is on the list. We can handle the lock and key side of the repair; the update handles the electronic side. If you're unsure whether your car is on the list, ask us when you call and we'll point you the right way.

What affects the cost of a Hyundai key replacement?

We don't quote numbers in a web page because the honest price depends on your car, and no two Hyundais are quite the same. These are the factors that move the cost:

  • Whether the car has an immobilizer at all. A plain metal key for a no-chip base trim is a much lighter job than a programmed chip key or smart fob.
  • The key type: basic key, flip key, or push-button smart fob.
  • The generation. Older chips with readable PINs are generally more straightforward than the newest Hitag-AES cars, where tool coverage varies.
  • Whether you have a working key to start from. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
  • Whether there is ignition, door-lock, or steering column damage to repair first.
  • How many keys you want made, and where and when the car needs service.
  • Whether the job turns out to need dealer or NASTF-credentialed service, which we'll tell you up front.

Dealer or locksmith: what's fair to say

A Hyundai dealer is the right place for some things. The anti-theft software update is one. A dealer is also the likely route for certain newest-generation jobs where aftermarket tools can't yet do the work. We say that because it's true, and because sending you somewhere else beats starting a job we can't complete.

For a large share of the rest, a locksmith is the practical choice. The car doesn't have to be towed, we come to you, and on most 2006-2019 models the PIN can be read or calculated so no dealer is involved. We also tell you early if your car is a no-chip trim where a metal key is all you need. If you're comparing options for your car, start with our car key replacement in Valley Glen overview or call and we'll sort it out in a few questions.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you're considering for theirs, including us, and compare it against what the state shows. It's a simple check and a good habit.

Hyundai key service around Valley Glen

Valley Glen was carved out of Van Nuys and North Hollywood in the late 1990s, so its housing and hardware profile matches those older postwar neighborhoods. In ZIP 91401, 91405 and 91606 we're typically dealing with 1940s-50s tract homes and apartment buildings along Victory and Vanowen. In the Los Angeles Valley College district, the lockout and lost-key calls tend to come from student rentals. Along the Victory Boulevard, Burbank Boulevard and Oxnard Street corridors and around the Fulton Avenue area, we go to driveways, apartment lots and curbsides alike.

Hot, dry summers are the valley-floor norm here, and heat-driven expansion of doors and weatherstripping is the main seasonal issue. A hot day makes a lockout more miserable, so tell us when you call if you're standing in the sun. If you also need a house rekeyed after buying a postwar tract home, or gate and padlock work on a property backing the Tujunga Wash Greenway, mention it and we can plan the visit around both. For a quick lockout, see car lockout service in Valley Glen. Everything we do locally is listed at our Valley Glen locksmith page, and our general car keys overview covers other makes. To reach us in writing, use the contact page, though for an urgent car problem, call (213) 577-1366.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Hyundai need a programmed key?

It depends on the trim and build date. Many base turn-key trims from 2011 to 2022 have no immobilizer, and a properly cut metal key starts them. Chip-equipped cars need programming. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles built after November 1, 2021, so later builds always have a chip. We check your specific car.

Why did a hardware-store copy of my Hyundai key work, or not work?

If your car has no immobilizer, a plain copy starts it. If your trim has a chip, a plain copy opens the door but won't start the car. The difference comes from the trim and build date, not just the model year.

Can you make a Hyundai key if I've lost all of them?

In most cases, yes. On most 2006-2019 models the tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN, so all-keys-lost is routine. On the newest Hitag-AES generations, coverage varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm before starting.

My Hyundai says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery is the most common cause, especially if the emergency blade still opens the door. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob may need replacement and programming, which we can do.

Do you come to apartment buildings and student rentals in Valley Glen?

Yes. Our mobile vans go to driveways, apartment lots, curbs, and workplaces. We serve all of Valley Glen, including ZIPs 91401, 91405 and 91606. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us where the car is.

My Hyundai was damaged in a theft attempt. What should I do?

Ignition cylinders and steering columns are often damaged in those attempts, and a new key alone may not fix the car. We can handle the lock and key repair. Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update for affected models, which you'd arrange through a dealer.

How do you decide what a Hyundai key will cost?

Price depends on whether the car has a chip, the key type, the generation, whether you have a working key, any ignition or lock damage, and the location and timing of the job. We explain those factors on the phone and confirm what applies to your car.

Is the locksmith you send licensed?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts. That's a good habit with every company you call.
