What do BMW owners in Valley Glen usually need?

Most BMW calls fall into a few groups: a smart fob that suddenly says 'key not detected,' a lost key with no spare, a cracked shell or worn buttons on an older car, and the occasional lockout with the key sitting inside. The problem matters less than the generation of BMW you drive, because the generation decides what can be done at the curb and what can't.

Valley Glen is mostly postwar single-family tracts from the 1940s and 50s, with apartment buildings concentrated along Victory and Vanowen. That mix shapes where key trouble shows up. Apartment residents often have a car parked wherever the building allows, and when the only key goes missing, the car is stuck right there. Student rentals near Los Angeles Valley College are a typical lockout setting, because keys get passed between roommates and set down in the wrong place. In the tract neighborhoods, the common story is a used BMW bought without a clear count of how many keys exist.

If you're in any of those situations, the first thing we need is your model, year, and what actually happened. A VIN speeds everything up. The rest of this page explains how we sort the job, what we can and can't do, and what drives the cost.

How does mobile BMW key service work at the curb?

We run mobile service vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Valley Glen is about 13 miles from that base. It's one company, so the person who answers the phone is part of the same operation that sends the van. There is no dispatch middleman.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Tell us the model, year, and what happened.
  2. We place your car in a key generation using the year, model, and VIN, and we tell you honestly whether the job is curb work, bench work, or dealer-only before anyone drives out.
  3. A van comes to wherever the car is in Valley Glen, whether that's a driveway, a street, or a lot behind an apartment building.
  4. We confirm you're the owner with registration and ID before cutting or programming anything. Skipping that step protects nobody.
  5. We cut and program the key, or work on the car's module with dedicated BMW equipment where the generation calls for it.
  6. We test every function: start, lock, unlock, trunk, and any spare keys, so you're not discovering a problem in the parking lot next week.

Which BMW key era is yours?

BMW key systems fall into clear eras, and knowing yours is the fastest way to know what's realistic. Here it is in plain terms.

  • EWS era: cars through the mid-2000s, and the E83 X3 through 2010. These use the EWS immobilizer and the ID44 remote-head 'diamond' key. This is routine specialist work, and keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench.
  • CAS era: starting with the 2002 E65 7-series and spreading through the 2004 E60 5-series, 2006 E90 3-series, 2007 E70 X5, and 2013-2015 E84 X1. These use an ID46 fob that inserts into a slot in the dash, with a Start button. The CAS module comes in generations from CAS1 through CAS3+.
  • F-chassis era: the F01 7-series (2009), F10 5-series (2011), F25 X3 (2011), F30 3-series (2012), F15 X5 (2014), and F48 X1 (2016). These move to true keyless smart fobs on the ID49 chip. The F01, F10, and F25 use CAS4 or CAS4+ modules; the F30, F15, and F48 use FEM or BDC body modules.
  • G-chassis era: from the 2016 G11 7-series onward. These use the BDC2 body controller and a 434 MHz fob.
  • Newest generations: the G70 7-series (2023), U11 X1 (2023), G60 5-series (2024), and G45 X3 (2025) add Digital Key architectures. There's no established aftermarket path for these yet.

What can we do in each era?

EWS cars are routine specialist work, including all-keys-lost. CAS1 through CAS3+ cars have documented add-a-key and all-keys-lost procedures through the OBD port, though late CAS3+ firmware can need a flash downgrade first. That's more involved, and we'll tell you if your car falls there.

CAS4/CAS4+ and FEM/BDC F-chassis cars are advanced specialist jobs. Some can be done through OBD with the right tool, while others need bench work on the module. It's possible, but only with dedicated BMW equipment, and we'll say plainly when a specific car is beyond what we'd do at the curb.

G-chassis BDC2 cars are different. Adding a key is specialist-possible if you still have a working key. The newest generations, G70, U11, G60, and G45, are dealer-only for key work.

What if you've lost every BMW key?

All-keys-lost is where honesty matters most, because the answer depends entirely on the era. On EWS cars, we originate keys from the module data. On CAS cars, there's a documented all-keys-lost procedure. On F-chassis cars, it's an advanced job that depends on the module and tooling. We confirm by VIN and in person rather than promise something over the phone.

On G-chassis cars from 2016 on, all-keys-lost is effectively dealer territory. There is one advertised aftermarket route, but it locks the car against future dealer keys. We don't use it, and we won't promise G-series all-keys-lost. If your BMW is a G-series and every key is gone, the right move is usually the dealer, and we'd rather tell you that on the phone than after a van trip.

One more point: BMW doesn't use the NASTF SDRM process the way domestic makes do, and dealer routes require proof of ownership. Have your registration and ID ready either way. If you want to read more about the situation generally, see our page on lost car key replacement in Valley Glen.

What goes wrong with BMW keys besides getting lost?

Plenty of BMW key complaints aren't lost-key problems at all, and some aren't key problems. These are the ones we run into most often:

  • Dead rechargeable key batteries on 2000s EWS and slot-key cars. The remote dies, but the chip still starts the car.
  • Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars, which often get misdiagnosed as a bad key.
  • Worn dash key slots and fobs that no longer hold a charge.
  • Dead smart-fob coin cells on F and G-chassis cars. The car says 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Cracked key shells, broken flip hinges on the E83, and worn buttons.
  • Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults that get blamed on the key.
  • Sticker shock on lost-key jobs for G-chassis cars, where all-keys-lost is dealer territory.

What affects the cost of BMW key replacement?

We don't quote numbers on a web page, because an honest number depends on facts we don't have yet. Here is what moves the cost, so you can see why two BMWs can be very different jobs.

  • The generation of the car. An EWS diamond key and a CAS4 smart fob are not the same kind of work or equipment.
  • Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost. Having a working key makes most jobs simpler.
  • Whether the job is done through the OBD port or needs module work on the bench.
  • The type of key itself: a new shell, a replacement fob, or a complete key.
  • How many keys you want made.
  • Where you are and what time you call. Valley Glen is about 13 miles from our Westwood storefront, and after-hours calls are part of what we do.
  • Whether the real problem is a battery, a worn slot, or a steering-lock fault. Sometimes the lighter-cost fix is a fresh coin cell rather than a new key.

Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key?

Both have a place. For the G70, U11, G60, and G45, the dealer is the only path, and for G-series all-keys-lost it's usually the right one. A dealer visit generally means getting the car to them and working inside their schedule.

For older BMWs, we can often do the same work where the car sits. That covers EWS cars, CAS cars, many F-chassis jobs depending on the module, and add-a-key on G-chassis cars when you have a working key. You'll also get a straight answer before we come out, including when the answer is 'go to the dealer.' More general detail is on our BMW key page and our wider car keys overview.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We've been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We have a real storefront in Westwood and mobile vans, and you deal with one company from phone to finished key. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

A fair thing to know about any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask to see it before work starts. That applies to us as much as anyone else.

BMW key help around Valley Glen

We work across Valley Glen, including ZIP codes 91401, 91405, and 91606. That covers the Los Angeles Valley College district, the Victory Boulevard, Burbank Boulevard, and Oxnard Street corridors, the Fulton Avenue area, and the streets along the Tujunga Wash Greenway.

Wherever your BMW is sitting, near Ulysses S. Grant High School, around Valley Glen Community Park, or outside an apartment building on Victory, the process is the same: call, get an honest read on your car's generation, and we come to you. This is a hot, dry valley-floor neighborhood in summer, so a car locked with the key inside isn't something to leave sitting. If that's your situation, see car lockout service in Valley Glen.

If your issue is a fob that has stopped working rather than a lost key, our page on key fob replacement in Valley Glen covers it. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a BMW key if I've lost all of them?

It depends on the era. EWS and CAS cars have established all-keys-lost procedures, F-chassis cars are advanced specialist jobs, and G-chassis cars from 2016 on are effectively dealer-only for all-keys-lost. We confirm by VIN and in person rather than promise it over the phone.

Can you program a key for a 2024 BMW 5-series?

No. The G60 5-series and the other newest generations, the G70, U11, and G45, are dealer-only for key work. We'd rather tell you now than send a van for something we can't do.

My BMW says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On F and G-chassis cars a dead coin cell in the smart fob is a common cause, especially when the emergency blade still opens the door. Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults also get blamed on the key. Check the battery first, and call us if it still fails.

Is a steering-lock problem the same as a bad key?

No. Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars are often misdiagnosed as key problems. A new key won't fix a failing lock, so it's worth diagnosing before spending money on keys.

Do I need to prove I own the car?

Yes. We ask for registration and ID before cutting or programming a key. Dealer routes require proof of ownership too.

Can you come at night or on weekends?

Yes. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Valley Glen.

Can you add a spare to my G-series BMW?

Add-a-key on G-chassis BDC2 cars is specialist-possible if you have a working key. Without one, you're in all-keys-lost territory, which is effectively dealer-only.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the license number before work starts, and be cautious with anyone who won't give it.
