What do Honda owners in Valencia usually need?
Most Honda key calls come down to three situations: a key that no longer works, a key that is gone, or a fob that has stopped talking to the car. Valencia shapes how those play out. It is a master-planned community begun in the mid-1960s, organized into named villages linked by paseo walkways. Housing is mostly HOA-governed single-family tracts built from the 1960s through the 2000s, with townhome and condo clusters near Town Center and newer construction in FivePoint Valencia to the west. A lot of Hondas here sit in home driveways and garages, and plenty more sit in shared residential lots where the owner has one spot and one set of keys.
These are the situations we plan for when a Honda owner in Valencia calls:
- Apartment and condo residents along the McBean Parkway corridor near Town Center who have locked a key in the car or lost the only one.
- Students near CalArts who share a car or a key among housemates, then find the key missing the night before it is needed.
- Workers at the Valencia Industrial Center whose Honda is parked at a business, with the key in a jacket at home.
- Families in the HOA villages with a worn ignition, a cracked key shell, or a spare that opens the doors but will not start the engine.
- Drivers with a smart fob that has gone quiet and a dash message reading 'key not detected'.
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
We run mobile service vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. Valencia is about 34 miles from that base, so we tell you plainly on the phone what the trip involves instead of guessing. The work itself happens beside your car, whether that is a driveway, a condo lot, or a parking space at work. You do not need to tow the Honda anywhere in nearly every case.
- Call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers any hour of the day, any day of the year. Tell us the model, the year, where the car is parked, and whether you have any working key.
- We identify the key type from the year and model, and we confirm by VIN or in person when the data is not clear-cut. If your car is one of the newest model years where aftermarket coverage can lag, we say so before we drive out.
- We arrive, ask for proof the car is yours, such as registration and ID, and check the vehicle. A locksmith who skips this step is not someone you want working on your car.
- We cut the key to your door and ignition code. If the car's locks are worn, we cut to what actually works.
- We program the transponder or smart fob through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, then match any memory-linked keys to the right driver slot.
- You test everything before we leave: doors, remote buttons, start, and a second key if we made one.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Honda key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Honda did not switch to chip keys all at once. It added immobilizers model by model, so the era depends on your exact car and year. Here is the broad picture, and we verify the specific year before touching anything.
Several US Hondas kept plain mechanical keys into the early 2000s. The Civic ran that way through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. A key like that has no chip, so a copy from a hardware store will start the car. That is also a main reason those years still top theft lists.
The first chip era used a fixed-code chip called Megamos 13. It appeared on the Accord from 1998 to 2002, the Odyssey from 1999 to 2004, the Civic from 2001 to 2005, the CR-V from 2002 to 2004, and the Pilot in 2003 and 2004.
Next came the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip: the Accord in 2003, the CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot in 2005, the Ridgeline and Civic in 2006, and the Fit in 2009. Then Honda moved to the Honda G chip (ID47, Hitag 3), starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014 to 2017 redesigns.
Smart proximity keys became standard at each model's following redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: the Accord from 2018, the Civic from 2022, and the CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026. Changeover years differ by model, which is why we do not rely on a rule of thumb. For a model-by-model overview, see our Honda key guide.
What if you have lost every Honda key?
Losing the last key feels like the worst case, but for most Hondas it is a routine job for us. Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, most models do not need a PIN code from the manufacturer, and Honda does not generally require special registry credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. In practice, we can usually cut a new key from the car and program it on site, and you do not need a tow. Our page on lost car key replacement in Valencia covers the process in more detail.
There are honest exceptions you should know about:
- Earliest chip cars, roughly 1998 to 2004 (the Megamos-13 era): some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That can take longer and costs more than a simple add-a-key.
- Memory-linked keys: Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys on Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims must be matched to the correct memory slot, or seat and mirror settings will not follow the key.
- Newest platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023): aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before we quote you, so you are not paying for a trip that cannot finish the job.

Call (213) 577-1366What other Honda key problems do we see?
Not every call is a lost key. Some are keys that are wearing out, and a few of these are easy to fix without replacing anything. Here are the issues that come up most often on Hondas:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996 to 2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning. Keep using a worn key and the problem gets worse. Sometimes the ignition needs repair rather than another key.
- Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005 to 2015 models. The chip inside is often fine and can be moved into a new shell.
- Dead smart-fob batteries: the dash says 'key not detected' while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. A battery may be all you need.
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder: they open the doors but will not start the engine. The key needs to be programmed to the car.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently, working one day and not the next.
- A flashing green key (immobilizer) light, which can point to an antenna-ring or chip fault, not just a bad key.
- Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs through 2000 to 2001: any hardware-store copy starts them, which makes them frequent theft targets. A new key will not fix that, so talk to us about what actually helps.
What affects the cost of a Honda key in Valencia?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the price, so you can see why two Honda owners can get different quotes for what sounds like the same job.
The first factor is the key type. A plain mechanical key is a different job from a transponder key, a remote-head key, or a smart proximity fob. Newer technology generally takes more equipment and more time to set up.
Second is whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car you can still start is usually the more economical route. All keys lost takes more steps, and on the earliest Megamos-13 cars it can mean bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU.
Third is the model year and platform. The newest Hitag AES platform can be dealer-only for some jobs, and we confirm coverage before quoting. Memory-linked Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys add matching work.
Fourth is whether the car or its lock needs repair. A worn ignition may need work before a new key will be reliable.
Last are the logistics: where you are, how far our van has to travel from Westwood, and the hour you call. Nights and holidays are real work for real people, and the call will cover that openly.
Whatever the job, you get the quote before work starts, not after. If a company will not say how it prices, that tells you something.

Call (213) 577-1366Should you go to the Honda dealer or call a locksmith?
Both are legitimate choices, and which is better depends on your situation. A dealer can order a key cut to your VIN and has factory-level tools. It is a sound choice for a brand-new model year where aftermarket tools have not caught up, and we will tell you straight if your car falls into that group.
The tradeoff is logistics. With all keys lost, a car that will not start typically has to be towed to the dealer, you work around their service schedule, and you wait for the part. A mobile locksmith brings the cutting and programming to your Honda, so you skip the tow and often the wait. For most Hondas, the locksmith route is usually the more economical one once towing and lost time are counted, though we would not claim that for every model year.
If you are not sure, call us and describe the car. We would rather tell you the dealer is the right call than send a van that cannot finish the job. If you only need a spare, our car key replacement page for Valencia explains what to expect, and the general car keys overview covers other makes.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Honda?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are one company, with a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and our own mobile vans, so your call does not get passed through a dispatch middleman who has never seen the work. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work we do.
One practical point: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith company for its license number before work begins, and be wary of anyone who dodges the question. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366, which matters when a Honda will not start at the wrong hour.
Honda key service across Valencia's villages and ZIP codes
We work across Valencia in both ZIP codes, 91354 and 91355. That includes the village neighborhoods of Bridgeport, Northpark, Northbridge, Valencia Summit, Valencia Glen, Old Orchard, Valencia Hills and Westridge, plus the Copper Hill area, the north edge of Tesoro del Valle, and the new FivePoint Valencia development on the west side.
Gated enclaves exist in villages such as Westridge and Tesoro del Valle, so when you call, have the gate code or a way to reach the guard ready so the van is not stuck at the entrance. Several HOA-governed areas also have their own parking rules, so tell us exactly where the car is.
Valencia's hot, dry Santa Clarita Valley summers bring large day-night swings that cause seasonal door and frame movement, and wind-blown dust reaches exterior locks during Santa Ana events. A sticky door lock is not always the key's fault, and a lockout in those conditions is a different job than a key that will not turn in the ignition. If you are locked out, we can open the car and sort out the key separately; see car lockout service in Valencia. For a worn or dead fob, there is a page on key fob replacement, and our Valencia service overview covers everything else we do locally. You can also reach us any time through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Honda key in Valencia if I have lost all my keys?
On most Hondas, yes. We cut a key from the car and program it through the OBD-II port at your location, with no tow needed. The exceptions are the earliest chip cars, roughly 1998 to 2004, which can need extended procedures or bench work, and the very newest model years, which can be dealer-only until aftermarket tools catch up. We confirm before we quote.
Do I need a PIN code from Honda to program a new key?
On most Honda models, no manufacturer PIN code is required. Programming goes through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. Memory-linked Driver 1 and Driver 2 keys on Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims do need to be matched to the correct slot, and we handle that during programming.
Why does my Honda key open the doors but not start the car?
Most often it is a copy cut without a transponder, such as one from a hardware store. The blade fits the lock, but the car's immobilizer does not recognize the missing chip. A low-quality cloned chip can also work intermittently. Either way, the key needs a properly programmed transponder.
My Honda says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade will still open the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob or the car's receiver may be at fault. We can test it and tell you which.
What does a flashing green key light on my Honda mean?
It is the immobilizer light, and flashing can point to a chip fault or a problem with the antenna ring around the ignition, not only a bad key. We check the key and the car before recommending anything.
Is the dealer ever the better option for a Honda key?
Sometimes. The newest model years on the Hitag AES platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023) can be dealer-only for all-keys-lost jobs until aftermarket tools support them. If that is your car, we will say so on the phone instead of sending a van.
Do you work at gated HOA communities and condo lots in Valencia?
Yes. Tell us where the car is and how we get past the gate. Gated enclaves exist in villages such as Westridge and Tesoro del Valle, and condo clusters near Town Center may have their own parking rules, so a quick note on access helps us arrive ready to work.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith company for its license number before work starts, ask how the price is figured, and make sure they ask for proof that the car is yours. If any of that gets brushed aside, call someone else.
