Which key does a Honda Ridgeline use?
The Ridgeline has had two very different key systems, and your model year decides which one you hold. Trucks from 2006 through 2014 are first generation and use a transponder key with the remote built into the head. Trucks from 2017 through 2026 are second generation and use a push-button-start smart fob. There was no 2015 or 2016 Ridgeline in the US, so if a listing or parts site claims one, check the VIN before ordering anything.
That split is where most wrong-part mistakes begin: a remote-head key bought for a push-button truck, or a fob ordered for the wrong year. The year-by-year table on this page shows each model year. The prose here explains what it means when you are standing beside a truck you cannot start.
Everything here rests on the chip and key data we have checked. Where a year is unverified or vendors disagree, we say so and confirm by VIN. For the wider picture, see our Honda key replacement page or the car key service overview.
What do 2006–2014 Ridgeline owners need?
First-generation trucks use an ID46 transponder chip (Hitag 2) inside a remote-head key: a metal blade with the remote buttons in the plastic head. None of these trucks has push-button start. From 2006 to 2008 the key is the OUCG8D-380H-A, a part shared with the 2005–2006 CR-V and 2007–2008 Fit, and the chip is listed as PCF7936/7941. From 2009 to 2014 it is the MLBHLIK-1T with a PCF7936/7961 chip. Every one of these years has a mechanical backup key, and the chip data is verified for all of them.
Owners of these trucks usually land in one of four situations:
Because these are older trucks now, ignition wear deserves a mention. Our data lists worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage trucks as a known issue. A new key cannot fix a worn lock, so we pay attention to how the key turns before we cut anything.
- You have one working key and want a spare before it disappears. This is the simplest job.
- The key works, but the remote is dead, the buttons are worn out, or the shell has cracked.
- A hardware-store copy will not start the truck. Without the chip, no copy will, however well it is cut.
- Every key is gone, and the truck is sitting where you parked it.
What do 2017–2026 Ridgeline owners need?
Second-generation trucks use a smart fob carrying an ID47 chip (Hitag 3). Push-button start is standard on every trim from the 2017 launch. Proximity door entry was not available on the base RT from 2017 to 2020, but the fob still starts that truck. Early trucks use the KR5V2X family of fobs. The KR5T41 fob, OEM 72147-T6Z-xx, is listed by US vendors from 2020 on.
The 2020 year is where vendors disagree: some catalogs show the KR5V2X and others the newer KR5T41. Both are ID47, so programming is unaffected. We match the fob in your hand rather than trusting a catalog.
One thing surprises people. Unlike Honda's redesigned models, the Ridgeline has not moved to the 4A smart platform, so do not assume a fob from another recent Honda will work. Our data for 2021 and 2022 carries the most support. For 2023 and 2024 the chip listing is thinly sourced, and 2025 and 2026 are unverified year by year. On those trucks we confirm the fob part number and tool coverage by VIN before we quote.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Duplicate or all keys lost: how does it differ by era?
Our data says a duplicate needs an original key to copy on every Ridgeline year, and that all-keys-lost is possible on every model year from 2006 through 2024. For 2025 and 2026 the all-keys-lost answer is not confirmed, so we tell you plainly after the VIN check instead of promising.
A duplicate from a working key is the lighter-cost option and usually the more economical route, which is why we keep nudging people toward a spare. Losing the only key means building a new one from the truck itself. That takes more steps and more equipment, and on the smart-fob years the replacement fob costs more than an older bladed key.
On a 2021–2024 truck we confirm the fob part number and tool coverage before giving an all-keys-lost quote, so you do not hear one answer on the phone and a different one in the driveway.
Either way, we ask for proof of ownership and photo ID before cutting or programming anything. It protects you as much as it protects us.
Is Ridgeline key programming OBD or dealer-only?
For every year with verified data, 2006 through 2024, programming goes through the OBD port, and our data shows no NASTF SDRM registry requirement. In plain terms, nothing in the verified years is flagged dealer-only, so a mobile locksmith with the right tools can do the job at your truck.
The edges are where honesty matters. For 2025 and 2026, the programming method and the SDRM question are both unverified. Catalogs list the ID47 KR5T41 smart key through 2026, but we have not verified those years individually. If a newest-year truck turns out to need dealer involvement, we will tell you before any work starts, and we will not sell you a fob we cannot program.
The chip and the remote are separate jobs. A key can start a first-generation truck while its buttons are dead, and a fob can still lock the doors while the truck refuses to see it. We test the chip, the remote functions, and the backup blade separately.
How do we handle a Ridgeline key job?
Here is the order of work, whether you reach us by phone from a parking lot or walk into the storefront.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the model year, whether the truck has a push-button, and how many keys you have left, if any.
- We read the VIN and place the truck in its era: ID46 remote-head, or ID47 smart fob. For 2025–2026 trucks, this is where we confirm tool coverage.
- We explain what the job involves and what drives the cost, before any work begins.
- We come to you with a mobile van, or you bring the truck to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd if it runs.
- We check proof of ownership and photo ID.
- We cut or source the key or fob, program it through the OBD port, and test it.
- We check every function: door locks, remote buttons, engine start, and the backup blade. If you ordered a spare, we test that too.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a Ridgeline key?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your truck and your situation. These are the things that move the cost:
We give you the figure before work begins. Call (213) 577-1366 or use the contact page with your year and VIN, and we can be specific.
- Era. A first-generation remote-head key and a second-generation smart fob are different hardware, and fobs cost more.
- Duplicate versus all keys lost. Copying a working key is the lighter-cost option.
- Which fob your truck takes: the KR5V2X family or the KR5T41, and whether it is an original or a compatible part.
- How many keys you want made in one visit.
- Repair versus replacement. A new battery, shell, or set of buttons is usually the more economical route when the chip and blade are fine.
- Where the work happens: at our Westwood storefront or at your truck.
What key problems do Ridgeline owners run into?
Our data points to a handful of repeat problems, split by generation. On 2006–2014 trucks:
On 2017–2026 trucks:
A 'key not detected' message does not always mean a failed fob. A dead battery is a known cause, and the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first, and check your owner's manual for the backup start method on your trim. If the message persists with a fresh battery, bring the fob to us and we will test it.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage trucks.
- Cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons.
- Remote battery failure.
- Non-transponder hardware-store copies that will not start the truck.
- Dead fob battery: the truck reports 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door.
- Lost-fob replacement that costs more than an older bladed key.
- Water-damaged or crushed fobs.
When should you call us instead of the dealer?
Call us when you are stranded, when every key is lost and you would rather not arrange a tow, or when you want a spare made without scheduling around a service department. We work from vans and a storefront, so the job can come to the truck.
The dealer can make sense if you already have an appointment and the truck is drivable, or if a 2025–2026 truck turns out to need dealer-side programming. We will say so openly if that is the case.
Whichever route you pick, ask any locksmith for their California BSIS LCO license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a legitimate company will give it to you without hesitation.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a 2015 or 2016 Honda Ridgeline key?
No. The first generation ended with the 2014 model year, and the second generation started with 2017. If someone calls a truck a 2015 or 2016, we check the VIN to find out what it really is before ordering any key.
Can you replace a Ridgeline key if I have lost every one?
For 2006 through 2024 our data says all-keys-lost is possible, and programming goes through the OBD port. For 2025 and 2026 it is not confirmed yet, so we check the VIN and current tool coverage and tell you plainly what applies.
Will a hardware-store copy start my 2010 Ridgeline?
No. These trucks use an ID46 transponder chip, and a copy without that chip will not start the engine. It needs a real transponder key that is programmed to the truck.
My 2019 Ridgeline says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a known cause, and the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the message continues, bring the fob to us and we will test it.
Do 2025 and 2026 Ridgelines use the same fob?
Catalogs list the KR5T41 ID47 smart key through 2026, but we have not verified those newest years individually. We confirm the setup by VIN and current tool coverage before we quote.
Which fob does a 2020 Ridgeline take?
Vendors split between the KR5V2X and the newer KR5T41 for 2020. Both are ID47, so programming is the same. We match the fob that is in your hand.
Is Ridgeline key programming dealer-only?
Nothing in our verified data, 2006 through 2024, is flagged dealer-only. Those trucks program over OBD, and our data shows no NASTF SDRM requirement. For 2025 and 2026 we confirm first and say so honestly if a dealer is needed.
What should I have ready when I call?
Have your model year, the VIN (visible at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb), and your photo ID with proof of ownership. Tell us how many working keys you have left, if any.
