What do BMW owners in Temple City usually need?
Most BMW calls from Temple City fall into a few situations: a key that has quit working, a spare that was never made, a key locked inside the car, a key lost somewhere between the car and the front door, or a worn key that is one drop from failing. The model year decides almost everything about how we handle it, which is why it is the first thing we ask on the phone.
Temple City is mostly postwar single-family housing: 1940s and 1950s bungalows and ranch houses on modest lots, with newer two-story rebuilds mixed in. Whether your BMW sits in a driveway on a bungalow block near Temple City Park, or in a space at one of the small apartment and condo buildings along Las Tunas Drive and Rosemead Boulevard, the car key often travels on the same ring as a house key. A lost ring can become two problems at once: a car you cannot start and a door you cannot open. We handle both kinds of work, so you do not have to book two companies.
These are the BMW key problems we see most, and several are not replacement jobs at all:
- Rechargeable key batteries that have died on 2000s EWS and slot-key cars. The remote stops working, but the chip inside can still start the car.
- Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars, which often get blamed on the key.
- Worn dash key slots, and fobs that no longer hold a charge.
- Dead coin cells in F- and G-chassis smart fobs: the dash says key not detected, yet the emergency blade still opens the door.
- Cracked key shells, broken flip hinges on the E83 and worn buttons.
- Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults that look like a key problem.
- Lost-key jobs on G-chassis cars, where the cost surprises people because all-keys-lost is dealer territory.
How does mobile BMW key service work at the curb?
We work from mobile vans backed by our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. Temple City is about 25 miles from that base, and the van carries the key-programming equipment to wherever the car is parked: your driveway, the curb or a shopping-center lot.
If your car turns out to need more than a curbside visit, such as module work, we say so up front and explain the next step instead of improvising.
- Call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers at any hour of the day or night. Give us the year, the model and the chassis code if you know it, and tell us whether you still have any working key.
- We tell you plainly which key generation your car uses and whether it is work we do or a dealer-only job, before anyone drives out.
- On arrival we confirm ownership and check the VIN, because some models straddle two key systems and the year alone can mislead.
- We diagnose before we replace. A dead battery, an ELV fault or a door-handle sensor problem can look exactly like a bad key.
- We cut the key and program it with equipment suited to your car's module. Depending on the era, that means OBD work at the car or, on older systems, working from module data on the bench.
- We test every key: start, lock, unlock, remote buttons and the emergency blade. Your existing keys get tested too.

Call (213) 577-1366Which BMW key generation does your car use?
BMW key systems fall into clear eras, and the era tells you what is possible. Here is the plain version.
The overlap matters: the same year can land on different systems depending on the model. If you do not know your chassis code, the year and model are enough to start, and we confirm by VIN before promising anything. Our BMW key page goes deeper on each generation, and our Temple City car key replacement page covers every make.
- EWS era (through the mid-2000s, and through 2010 on the E83 X3): a remote-head 'diamond' key with an ID44 (PCF7935) chip.
- CAS era (from the 2002 E65 7-series, then the 2004 E60 5-series, 2006 E90 3-series, 2007 E70 X5 and 2013-2015 E84 X1): an ID46 (PCF7945/Hitag2) fob that inserts into a dash slot, with a Start button. The module runs from CAS1 through CAS3+.
- F-chassis (F01 7-series 2009, F10 5-series 2011, F25 X3 2011, F30 3-series 2012, F15 X5 2014, F48 X1 2016): true keyless smart fobs on the ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro) chip. The F01, F10 and F25 use CAS4/CAS4+ modules; the F30, F15 and F48 use FEM/BDC body modules.
- G-chassis (from the 2016 G11 7-series): a BDC2 body controller and an N5F-ID21A-family 434 MHz fob.
- Newest generations (G70 7-series 2023, U11 X1 2023, G60 5-series 2024, G45 X3 2025): Digital Key architecture, with no established aftermarket path yet.
What if you have lost every BMW key?
All-keys-lost is where the era matters most, and where we would rather be honest than optimistic.
On the G-series, one aftermarket all-keys-lost route is advertised, but it locks the car against future dealer keys. We do not use it, and we will not promise G-series all-keys-lost. If that is your situation, we will tell you so on the phone and point you to the dealer, which will ask for proof of ownership. Our lost car key replacement page explains the general process for any make.
- EWS cars (through about 2006, X3 through 2010): routine specialist work. Keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench, all-keys-lost included.
- CAS1 to CAS3+ cars (roughly 2002 to 2015, depending on model): documented OBD add-a-key and all-keys-lost procedures exist. Late CAS3+ firmware can need a flash downgrade first.
- CAS4/CAS4+ and FEM/BDC F-chassis cars (2009 to 2022, depending on model): advanced specialist jobs. Some tools work through OBD, others need bench module work. It is possible, but only with dedicated BMW equipment.
- G-chassis BDC2 cars (2016 onward): adding a key is specialist-possible if you still have a working one. All-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only.
- G70, U11, G60 and G45: dealer-only for key work, period.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of BMW key replacement?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the cost.
We would rather talk it through once we know your VIN and what you still have in hand. A dead battery or a cracked shell is usually the lighter-cost fix, so we check those first.
- Key generation. A diamond key, a slot fob and a keyless smart fob are very different parts.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car that still has one is simpler than all-keys-lost.
- Module generation. CAS1 to CAS3+ jobs, CAS4/CAS4+ jobs and FEM/BDC jobs call for different tools and different amounts of labor.
- Firmware. Late CAS3+ cars can need a flash downgrade before programming.
- Where the work happens. OBD work at the curb differs from module work on the bench.
- How many keys you want made, and the condition of the ones you already have.
Should you call the BMW dealer or a locksmith?
Both are legitimate, and the right choice depends on the car. For EWS and CAS cars, and for many F-chassis cars, a specialist can do the work where the car sits, which is usually the more economical route and spares you moving a car that will not start.
For G70, U11, G60 and G45 cars, the dealer is the only path for key work, and for G-chassis all-keys-lost it is effectively the only route we trust. Dealer paths require proof of ownership, since BMW does not use the NASTF SDRM process the way domestic makes do, so have your registration and ID handy. If you are in dealer territory, we will say so rather than take a call for a job we cannot do properly.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and mobile vans serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they work on your car.
- One company. The people who answer the phone belong to the same company that sends the van, with no dispatch middlemen in between.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
- Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round.
- We tell you when a job is dealer-only instead of dragging it out.
BMW key help across Temple City and ZIP 91780
We take BMW calls throughout Temple City, ZIP 91780: downtown along Las Tunas Drive, the Camellia Square area, the Rosemead Boulevard and Temple City Boulevard corridors, the Longden Avenue area and north Temple City near the Arcadia border. Places like Temple City Park, Live Oak Park and Community Center, Temple City High School and the Civic Center make easy meeting points if you are stranded away from home.
The housing mix shapes the calls we get: lockouts on bungalow blocks near Temple City Park, rekeying on newly rebuilt two-story homes on the north side, smart lock installs on remodeled homes near Longden Avenue, and unit lock changes for small apartment buildings along Rosemead Boulevard. If a car key and a house key are tangled in the same problem, mention both when you call. Our Temple City locksmith page lists the rest of what we do here.
Summers are hot and dry this far inland, and the heat makes wood doors on postwar homes expand and stick, which is worth knowing before you blame a key. If your BMW is locked with the key inside, see car lockout help in Temple City. If the fob itself is the issue, key fob replacement covers batteries, shells and replacements.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a BMW key in Temple City if I have lost all my keys?
It depends on the era. EWS and CAS cars have established procedures, and F-chassis cars are advanced specialist work. G-chassis all-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only, and the newest generations are dealer-only outright. Call with your year and model and we will tell you which category you are in.
My BMW says key not detected, but the emergency blade opens the door. What is wrong?
On F- and G-chassis cars that often points to a dead coin cell in the smart fob rather than a failed key. Try a fresh battery first. If the message continues, the fob or the car's door-handle sensors need testing, which we can do at your car.
How much does BMW key replacement cost in Temple City?
It depends on key generation, module type, whether you have a working key, firmware, how many keys you want and whether the work happens at the curb or on the bench. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will talk it through.
Do you work on 2023 and newer BMWs?
Not for key work. The G70, U11, G60 and G45 use Digital Key architectures with no established aftermarket path yet, so those jobs are dealer-only. We would rather say that on the phone than send a van for a job it cannot finish.
Do you come out at night or on weekends?
Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Temple City. We do not promise an arrival time over the phone because it depends on where the vans are, but we will tell you honestly what to expect.
Do I need a working key to get a spare made?
It helps a great deal. EWS cars are keyed from module data on the bench, and CAS cars have documented OBD add-a-key procedures. F-chassis cars are advanced specialist work. On G-chassis BDC2 cars, add-a-key is specialist-possible with a working key; without one it becomes dealer territory.
Why will you not do aftermarket all-keys-lost on a G-series BMW?
The one advertised aftermarket route locks the car against future dealer keys. That can leave you worse off than you started, so we do not use it and will not promise G-series all-keys-lost. The dealer, with proof of ownership, is the safer path.
How can I tell whether a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for it before any work begins. Also ask what will be done, which key generation your BMW uses and whether the job is realistic for a locksmith or belongs at the dealer.
