What does it mean to rekey a lock?
Rekeying changes what a lock responds to without changing the lock itself. Inside a standard pin tumbler cylinder sits a column of small pins at different lengths. The right key lifts every pin to the shear line and the cylinder turns. When we rekey, we take the cylinder apart, swap in a new pin combination, and cut keys to match. The deadbolt, knob or handle stays on your door. The old key still slides in, but it no longer lifts the pins correctly, so it won't turn.
People search for things like rekey locks near me or house rekey when the question is who holds the keys, not whether the lock works. If the hardware is sound and the problem is key control, rekeying is the right answer. If the lock is worn, damaged, or something you don't trust, rekeying is the wrong job, and we'll tell you that instead of doing it anyway.
Wilshire Lock & Key handles lock rekeying for houses, apartments, mobile homes and businesses in Sylmar. The phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
When should you rekey your locks?
The rule is simple: rekey whenever you can't account for every copy of a key. Keys get copied at hardware counters, handed to cleaners, left with relatives and forgotten in drawers, and none of that leaves a record. New pins reset the count to the keys in your hand. These are the situations we get called for most:
- After moving in. Whether you rent or have just taken over a place, treat every existing key as unknown. This is the most common reason people ask us to rekey locks after moving.
- After buying a house. Previous owners, their agents, contractors and house sitters may all hold keys. Rekeying after closing is routine and is usually the more economical route compared with replacing every lock.
- After a tenant moves out. Tenant turnover is the textbook rekey: the unit is empty, the keys are unaccounted for, and the next tenant should get keys nobody else has.
- After losing keys. A ring that vanished with nothing identifying it is lower risk than one lost along with a wallet or bag showing your address. When in doubt, rekey.
- After a roommate, partner, employee or contractor leaves. Anyone whose access has ended shouldn't still hold a working key.
- When you want fewer keys. We can rekey all house locks to the same key, so the front door, back door and side door, and a gate lock where the hardware allows, all open with one.

Call (213) 577-1366How does a rekey work, step by step?
A rekey is mostly careful bench-style work done at your door. Here is how a typical visit goes, whether it is one front door or every lock on the property.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what happened: a move-in, a closing, a tenant leaving, lost keys. Tell us how many doors and locks are involved and whether any are padlocks, gate locks or smart locks. A photo of the hardware, if you can send one, helps us plan.
- A technician comes to the property in one of our mobile vans, carrying pinning kits and key-cutting equipment for the common residential and commercial cylinder types.
- We inspect each lock before touching it. If a cylinder is worn, sticking, or damaged, we tell you now, because rekeying a failing lock only gives you a failing lock with new keys.
- We remove the cylinder, replace the pins with a new combination, and reassemble it. If you asked for one key to work everywhere, we pin every compatible lock to the same combination.
- We cut the new keys and test each one in each lock. We also try an old key to confirm it no longer turns.
- We put everything back, check that the latch and deadbolt throw and retract cleanly, and hand over the keys. If we noticed anything else, such as a loose strike plate, we point it out, and you decide whether to deal with it.
Should you rekey, change the locks, or replace them?
Most of the time the question answers itself once we look at the door. Rekeying makes sense when the locks are in good shape, you like the hardware, and you only need to cut off old key access. It keeps your existing finish and fit, and it is typically lighter on cost than buying new hardware.
Changing the locks is a better call when the hardware is worn, mismatched across doors, a style you dislike, or not worth keeping. If you want to move up in security, that's a lock replacement conversation, because a rekey changes the key but not the quality of the lock.
One thing worth knowing for Sylmar: summer heat can warp wood doors, and a door that binds can feel like a bad lock when the real issue is alignment. We check for that before recommending anything, so you don't pay to replace a lock that was never the problem.
How much does lock rekeying cost in Sylmar?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your doors. What moves the cost:
- How many cylinders. One front door is a different job from every lock on a property.
- The type of lock. Standard residential cylinders are the simplest. Restricted keyways, high-security cylinders and some commercial hardware take more time and specialized key blanks.
- Whether you want everything keyed alike. Matching all locks to one key takes planning, but it can mean carrying a single key instead of four.
- How many keys you need. Each additional key is a cut and a test.
- The condition of the locks. Stiff or dirty cylinders take longer, and a damaged one may need repair or replacement instead.
- The time of day. Late-night and holiday calls are different from a daytime appointment, and we say so up front.
- Travel. Sylmar is about 24 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we factor that in honestly.

Call (213) 577-1366What about apartments, tenant turnover and business locks?
An apartment lock rekey between tenants is standard property management. The unit's lock gets new pins, the outgoing tenant's keys stop working, and the incoming tenant gets a fresh set. If you manage several units, our page for landlords covers how we handle turnover across multiple doors. We can work in a consistent way, so you aren't getting a different approach on every visit.
Commercial rekey and business lock rekey follow the same principle with more doors and more people. When an employee leaves, a manager changes, or a keyholder can't be tracked down, rekeying shuts off the old access without replacing every lock in the building. For offices and shops, our commercial locksmith work includes rekeying and the hardware around it. If your building has outgrown a pile of loose keys, a master key system lets individual keys open specific doors while a controlled few open everything. That is a planned project, not a quick fix, and we'll tell you honestly whether you need one.
What does rekeying look like around Sylmar?
Sylmar's housing is largely postwar through 1980s tract homes, and one of the jobs we see is rekeying after move-ins in the tract neighborhoods around Los Angeles Mission College. Those houses have usually passed through several owners and renters, and nobody can say how many keys are out there. If you've just closed on a place in the 91342 ZIP code, a rekey is the first thing worth doing, before the movers are done. The same goes for the Polk Street area, along the Hubbard Street corridor, and in the Olive View area.
Closer to Foothill Boulevard, newer gated townhome and small-lot developments are common. Rekeying the unit's front door, garage entry and any interior keyed doors is straightforward. The community gate or entry system is usually managed by the association, not by you, so we'll tell you what we can and can't touch before starting.
On the larger lots toward the foothills, such as near Kagel Canyon and near Lopez Canyon, long driveways, detached garages and perimeter gates mean more locks per property. That is where rekeying everything to one key pays off, since a ring of five keys becomes one. Santa Ana winds funnel through Newhall Pass and the foothill canyons and drive dust into outdoor padlocks and gate locks, which can leave them gritty and stiff. We clean and test those during a rekey, and if a gate lock is past saving, we'll point you toward gate lock repair or a replacement rather than pinning something that will keep failing.
Sylmar also has several large mobile home parks. The hardware on a mobile home door can differ from a standard house lock, so we look at what is installed first. Some can be rekeyed, and others are simply cheaper and more sensible to swap. If it's the latter, we'll say so.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We've been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles and mobile service vans that reach 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including Sylmar. When you call, you reach our company, not a call center that sells your job to whoever is closest. There are no dispatch middlemen between you and the technician. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
Someone answers (213) 577-1366 at any hour. If you need a mobile locksmith at night after a lost-keys scare, that is a normal call for us.
One more thing worth saying plainly: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS locksmith company license, known as an LCO. Ask any locksmith for their license number before they start work. It is a reasonable question, and a company that dodges it is telling you something.
What won't a rekey do?
Rekeying is a narrow service, and it's worth being straight about its limits. It will not make a flimsy lock strong, and it will not repair a worn cylinder or a latch that doesn't catch. It won't change a smart lock's electronic codes, which you manage in the lock's own settings; we can rekey the physical key cylinder on those locks. And it doesn't replace a conversation about whether the door, frame and strike plate are doing their job.
If you lose a ring with a car key on it, that's a separate job. We handle it, but it's not part of a house rekey. For extra copies once the rekey is done, ask about key duplication, and keep spare keys only with people you trust.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a lock rekey take?
It depends on how many locks are involved. A single door is quick work, and a whole house or a property with several gates takes longer. When you call (213) 577-1366, tell us the count and we'll give you a realistic sense of the visit.
Should I rekey locks after buying a house in Sylmar?
Yes. You can't know how many keys previous owners, agents, contractors or tenants kept. Rekeying after closing is usually the more economical route compared with replacing all the hardware, as long as the existing locks are in good condition.
Can you rekey all my locks to use one key?
In most cases, yes. We can pin compatible locks, such as front door, back door and side door, to the same combination. Some locks, like certain padlocks or high-security cylinders, may use different key types, and we'll tell you what is and isn't possible once we see them.
Will my old keys still work after a rekey?
No. That is the point. We test an old key in each lock after the work to confirm it no longer turns. Only the new keys will open the locks.
Is rekeying cheaper than replacing the locks?
Often it is the more economical route, when the existing hardware is sound. If a lock is worn, damaged or poor quality, replacing it can make more sense. We look at each lock and tell you which makes sense.
Can you rekey a lock if I've lost every key?
Usually, yes. If you're locked out, the door has to be opened first, and how we do that depends on the lock. Once it's open, we can rekey the cylinder so a lost key stops working. Call us and describe the lock so we can plan.
Do you rekey business and commercial locks in Sylmar?
Yes. We handle commercial rekey and business lock rekey, including shops and offices with many doors. If you need different keys for different staff, we can talk through whether a master key system fits your building.
Can you rekey a smart lock?
We can rekey the physical key cylinder that most smart locks keep as a backup. The electronic side, including codes and app access, is managed through the lock's own settings, and you should change those after a move or turnover too.
