What does lock installation actually involve?
Most people think a new lock installation is a ten-minute swap: unscrew the old one, screw in the new one. Sometimes it is. A lot of the time it is not, and the difference shows up months later as a bolt that drags, a latch that misses its strike, or a key that turns only if you lift the door slightly while you do it.
A proper door lock installation starts with the door itself. The lock has to match the bore holes, the edge preparation, the backset (the distance from the door edge to the center of the lock) and the thickness of the door. The strike plate and the frame behind it matter just as much as the lock. A very good lock fitted into a loose, misaligned frame will still fail to do its job.
We install locks for people in a few different situations. You may be building out or renovating and need hardware for doors that have never had a lock. You may have moved into a place with locks you do not trust. You may want to add a second layer of security on a door that only has a knob. Or you may be upgrading from a worn builder-grade lock to something sturdier. Each of those is lock installation, and each one is handled a little differently.
Which kinds of locks do we install?
We fit residential lock installation jobs and commercial lock installation jobs from one company, using the same standard of workmanship on both. Here is what typically comes up:
- Front door lock installation: a keyed entry set or handle set, usually paired with a separate deadbolt. We check that the door is solid enough to carry the hardware and that the strike is anchored into the framing, not just the thin trim.
- Lever lock installation: lever handles are easier to operate than round knobs, which is why they are common in accessibility upgrades and in commercial doors. Levers also have to be set so they do not sag over time.
- Mortise lock installation: a mortise lock sits inside a deep pocket cut into the edge of the door. It is common on older, heavier doors and many commercial entries. Cutting that pocket cleanly takes care, and so does choosing a lock body that fits an existing pocket if one is already there.
- Security lock installation: higher-grade deadbolts, reinforced strikes, longer screws and pick-resistant or key-controlled cylinders. If you want to go further, see our page on high-security locks.
- Commercial lock installation: storefront, office and back-door hardware, including functions such as storeroom and classroom locks that behave differently from a home lock.
- Gate and outbuilding locks: hasps, gate latches and keyed padlock setups for side gates, detached garages and sheds.

Call (213) 577-1366How do we install a new lock, step by step?
Every job is different, but the sequence is consistent. Here is how a typical door lock installation goes when you call us.
- We talk it through on the phone. Tell us what kind of door it is (wood, metal, glass, or a mobile home door), whether it already has holes drilled, and what you want the lock to do. That lets us bring the right hardware instead of guessing.
- We look at the door and frame in person. We check the door's thickness, the bore sizes, the backset, the condition of the edge and whether the frame is solid. If the door is warped, cracked or poorly hung, we tell you before we cut or drill anything.
- We confirm the lock choice with you. If what you picked will not fit the door well, or a different function suits your situation better, we say so and show you the options.
- We prepare the door. That may mean using existing holes as they are, enlarging a bore, adding a new one, or cutting a mortise pocket. Clean preparation is what keeps a lock from binding.
- We install the lock and set the strike. The latch and bolt have to reach the strike without forcing. We adjust the strike plate position and depth until the door closes smoothly and the bolt throws fully.
- We test everything. We cycle the lock repeatedly with the door open and closed, check every key, and confirm the door still seals and swings properly.
- We go over how it works with you. We hand over the keys, explain any function you need to know (such as a storeroom lever or a keyed-alike setup), and tell you what to watch for as the lock wears in.
How much does lock installation cost in Sylmar?
We do not quote numbers in an article, because the honest answer depends on the door and the lock. What we can do is explain exactly what moves the cost up or down, so you know what to expect when you call.
The lighter-cost option is usually a single standard lock on a door that already has the right holes and a sound frame. The more involved the job, the more labor and parts it needs.
- The lock itself. A basic keyed deadbolt and a high-security cylinder, a mortise lock body or a commercial-grade lever are very different products with very different price points.
- The door's existing preparation. If the bores are already cut and match, labor is lighter. If we have to drill new holes, cut a mortise pocket or repair a damaged edge, the job grows.
- Frame and strike condition. A weak or split frame may need reinforcement so the lock actually holds under force.
- The number of locks. Fitting several doors in one visit is usually more economical per door than coming back several times.
- Keying. Keyed-alike sets, restricted keyways and master-keyed systems add planning and parts.
- Door material. Solid wood, hollow-core, steel, aluminum storefront and mobile home doors each need different handling.
- When and where. Service after hours, on weekends, or at a location far from our base can affect the total. We explain that up front on the phone, before we are on the way.

Call (213) 577-1366Installation, rekey, replacement or deadbolt: which one do you need?
Customers often call for an installation when a different service would solve the problem more simply, and sometimes the reverse. Here is how we sort it out, so you do not pay for more than you need.
If you just want the same locks to work with new keys, for example after moving in, that is not installation. That is lock rekeying, and it is usually the more economical route because the hardware stays in place. If the existing lock is worn, broken or simply a style you dislike, lock replacement swaps it for a new one in the same door preparation.
New lock installation is the right call when the door has no lock at all, when the existing prep does not suit the hardware you want, or when you are adding something that was not there before. If what you want is specifically a second bolt on an entry door, our deadbolt installation page goes into that in detail. And if you are interested in keypads, app control or electronic entry, see smart lock installation.
If you are not sure which category you are in, call and describe the door. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone helping you choose than fit the wrong thing.
What should Sylmar homeowners know about installing locks here?
Sylmar sits in ZIP code 91342, in the far northern corner of the San Fernando Valley, and the housing there is varied. Much of it is postwar through 1980s tract homes. Those houses often still have their original door preparations, and sometimes original hardware, so installing a new lock means checking whether decades-old bores and frames still line up. Around the tract neighborhoods near Los Angeles Mission College, a common reason to call is a move-in: new owners or tenants want fresh, properly working locks on every exterior door. Sometimes rekeying handles that. Sometimes a lock turns out to be too worn to keep, and a new installation is the better answer.
Newer gated townhome and small-lot developments are common near the Foothill Boulevard corridor. These tend to have contemporary doors, narrower frames and association rules that may limit what hardware you can put on the exterior. If you live in one, check with your association before choosing a finish or style, then tell us what the rules say so we fit something compliant. Along the Glenoaks Boulevard and Hubbard Street corridors and in the Polk Street area, you will find a mix of older single-family lots where front door lock installation and added security hardware come up regularly.
Out toward the Olive View area, the El Cariso area, and the edges near Kagel Canyon and Lopez Canyon, lots get larger. Long driveways, detached garages and perimeter gates are common on the bigger parcels, and some properties keep horses. That means the installation job often extends past the front door: a keyed lock for a detached garage side door, a latch for a pedestrian gate, a padlock and hasp for a tack room or storage building. For worn gate hardware on those properties, see gate lock repair.
Sylmar also has several large mobile home parks. Mobile home entry doors often differ from standard residential doors in their preparation and dimensions, so we confirm the fit on site before ordering or cutting anything rather than assuming a standard lock will drop in.

Call (213) 577-1366How do heat and Santa Ana winds affect new locks in Sylmar?
Summers in this part of the Valley run very hot, and that matters for installation. Heat can warp wood doors and loosen weatherstripping, which changes how the door sits in the frame. If a door has shifted even a little, a freshly installed bolt may rub or fail to seat fully. That is why we check door fit before we drill, and why we sometimes adjust hinges or the strike as part of the job. A lock cannot fix a door that no longer closes properly.
Strong Santa Ana winds funnel through Newhall Pass and the foothill canyons and push dust into outdoor hardware. Padlocks and gate locks take the worst of it. For exterior and gate installations, we favor weather-rated hardware and recommend simple upkeep, such as keeping keyways clear of grit and not over-lubricating them, since sticky oil collects dust. Where a padlock has to live outside, a shrouded design and a well-placed hasp help keep it working longer.
What about commercial lock installation?
Businesses in Sylmar need lock installation too: new tenants, renovated suites, added back doors, storerooms, offices. Commercial doors are usually heavier, may be metal or aluminum-framed glass, and often have to meet requirements about how people can exit. The right lever function, mortise body or cylinder depends on the door's purpose, not just on preference.
We install and set hardware on commercial entries and interior doors, and we will tell you plainly when a door needs different hardware altogether. For the wider range of closers, exit devices and frames, see our commercial door hardware page.

Call (213) 577-1366How do you choose a locksmith you can trust?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), called an LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start work, including us. A legitimate company will give you the number without hesitation.
A few other signs are worth checking. The company should give you a real business name on the phone, not a generic greeting. They should explain what affects the cost before they arrive. They should be willing to look at the door before recommending hardware. And they should not push a full replacement when a simpler service would do.
For more about how we work in your area, visit our Sylmar locksmith page, or call us directly and describe the door you need a lock for.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between lock installation and lock replacement?
Installation means fitting a lock where there is none, or where the door needs new preparation. Replacement means swapping an existing lock for another in the same openings. If the holes already match the new lock, the job is usually simpler. We confirm which one you need when you call or when we look at the door.
Can you install a lock on a door that has never had one?
Yes. We drill the bores, cut the edge for the latch, mount the lock and set the strike on the frame. Before we start we check that the door is thick and solid enough for the hardware, and that the frame can anchor the strike securely.
Do I need to buy the lock first, or can you supply it?
Either works. We can bring hardware that suits your door, or we can install a lock you already purchased if it fits the door and is a sound product. If we think the lock you bought will not work well on your door, we tell you before we start, not after.
Can you install locks on a mobile home door in Sylmar?
Yes. Mobile home doors often differ from standard residential doors in how they are prepared, so we check the fit in person before choosing hardware. That way the lock goes in cleanly instead of being forced into a door that was not built for it.
Do you install mortise locks and lever locks?
Yes, we do both. Mortise locks sit in a deep pocket in the door edge and are common on older and commercial doors. Levers are used on many commercial doors and in accessibility upgrades. The right choice depends on your door, so we look at the existing preparation before recommending one.
Will a new lock work if my wood door has warped in the heat?
Not reliably. Sylmar's hot summers can warp wood doors, and a lock only works as well as the door's alignment. We check how the door sits in its frame, and adjust hinges or the strike where needed. If the door is badly warped, we tell you honestly that the door may need more than a lock.
Do you handle commercial lock installation as well as residential?
Yes. We install hardware on storefronts, offices, storerooms and back doors, as well as on homes. Commercial doors have their own requirements for how they lock and how people can exit, so we choose the function with the door's purpose in mind.
How do you decide what the installation will cost?
Cost depends on the lock you choose, the existing preparation of the door, the condition of the frame, how many doors there are, the keying you want, and when and where we are working. We explain those factors on the phone and confirm the details once we see the door.
Can I call for lock installation at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you need a door secured outside normal hours, call and we will work out the next step with you.
