What does lock rekeying actually do?
A standard lock is a cylinder holding rows of small spring-loaded pin stacks. Your key lifts each stack to exactly the right height so the cylinder can turn. Rekeying means we take that cylinder apart, swap the internal pins for a new combination, and cut a new key to match. The lock body, the deadbolt, the handle and the finish on your door all stay where they are. The old key still slides into the keyway, but it no longer turns.
That is why rekeying is usually the more economical route when your locks are in decent shape and the only real problem is that someone else might hold a working key. You are changing who has access, not buying new hardware.
We rekey house locks, apartment locks, gate and mailbox locks, padlocks, and commercial doors. You can have a single lock done, or every lock on the property set to one new key so you carry one key instead of five.
When should you rekey your locks?
The honest test is simple: do you know exactly who holds a key that works? If the answer is no, or even maybe, rekeying is the clean fix. These are the situations we get called for most.
- Rekey locks after moving: you have no way of knowing how many copies of the previous keys exist, who borrowed them, or which contractors and relatives still carry one.
- Rekey locks after buying a house: previous owners, real estate agents, inspectors and workers may all have had keys. Doing this before you unpack is the tidy way to start.
- Rekey locks after a tenant moves out: tenant turnover rekey is standard practice for landlords, because a former tenant's key should not work on the next tenant's door.
- Rekey locks after losing keys: a lost key does not mean someone found it, but especially if it had an address attached or went missing somewhere public, rekeying ends the question.
- After a roommate, partner, employee or contractor leaves and you cannot be sure every key came back.
- After a break-in or theft where keys may have been taken along with other items.
How do we rekey your locks, step by step?
Here is what actually happens when we come out to a house, apartment or business for a rekey.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us how many locks are involved, what type they are (deadbolts, knob sets, handlesets, padlocks, gate locks), the brand if you know it, and whether you want everything on one key.
- A mobile van brings the pinning kits, key-cutting tools and spare parts to your door, so the work happens on site.
- We look at each lock before touching it. It should turn smoothly, the cylinder should come out cleanly, and nothing inside should be worn, bent or corroded.
- We remove each cylinder, replace the pin stacks with a new combination, cut the new keys and reassemble the lock.
- We test every lock with the new key several times, confirm the old key no longer works, and check that the door latches properly and the strike plate lines up.
- We hand over the keys, tell you which key opens which lock if there is more than one, and flag anything that needs repair rather than quietly leaving it.

Call (213) 577-1366Should you rekey or replace the lock?
Rekeying is not always the right answer, and we will tell you when it is not. If a lock is in good working order, rekeying is usually the lighter-cost option and keeps the hardware you already like. If the lock is worn, sticks, has a loose or damaged cylinder, or is simply a weak model you would rather upgrade, then a new lock makes more sense, and that is a lock replacement job.
There is also a difference between changing keys and changing hardware. A rekey fixes the key problem. It does not make a flimsy door stronger or a loose strike plate tighter. If you want new hardware across the whole property, our change locks service covers that. If your goal is only to cut off old keys, rekeying does exactly that and nothing extra.
A few locks cannot be rekeyed in the field, such as some restricted or high-security cylinders where new key blanks are controlled by the manufacturer. If you tell us the brand and model on the phone, we can usually say up front which way it will go.
How much does lock rekeying cost in Lake View Terrace?
We do not quote a flat number over a general web page, because rekey jobs vary a lot, and a price pulled from the air would be wrong for half the people who read it. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost, so the quote you hear makes sense.
On the phone we will ask a few questions and give you a clear picture before a van heads your way.
- How many cylinders are involved. One deadbolt is a small job; a whole ranch house with a front door, back door, side door, garage entry and several padlocks is a bigger one.
- The type and brand of lock. Common residential locks are straightforward. Specialty or restricted-keyway locks take more care and sometimes more parts.
- How many keys you want cut, and whether everything should be keyed alike.
- The condition of the locks. A worn lock may need a part replaced, or may be better swapped out, and we will say so before starting.
- When you call. Nights, weekends and holidays are different from a weekday daytime appointment.
- Where the property is. Lake View Terrace is about 21 miles from our Westwood storefront, and the travel is part of the picture, especially for canyon-edge lots.
- Residential versus commercial. A shop, office or multi-door building has more doors, more key control questions and sometimes a master key plan.

Call (213) 577-1366What about apartments, landlords and business rekeys?
Apartment lock rekey and tenant turnover rekey are routine work. When a unit turns over, the cheap and sensible move is to rekey the entry lock and any secondary locks so the previous tenant's keys are dead, without paying for brand-new hardware each time. If you manage several units, our page for locksmith services for landlords explains how we handle turnover schedules and key records.
Commercial rekey and business lock rekey follow the same mechanics with more planning. If an employee leaves, a tenant vacates a unit, or a key has gone missing, we rekey the affected doors. When many people need different levels of access, a master key system lets each person carry one key that opens only what they should. For broader work on doors, hardware and storefronts, see our commercial locksmith page.
One practical tip for landlords and property managers: decide in advance who is authorized to approve the work, so a tenant turnover does not stall waiting for someone to confirm.
What does a rekey look like around Lake View Terrace?
Lake View Terrace, ZIP 91342, is a semi-rural neighborhood, and that shapes how rekeys play out here. Much of the housing is 1950s-to-1970s ranch homes, many on horse-zoned lots with barns, corrals and long gated driveways. A single property can have a front door, a back slider, a side door, a garage entry, a gate, and a barn or tack room, all on different keys that have piled up over decades. Rekeying the ranch homes near Little Tujunga Canyon often means pulling all of that into one tidy set, so the family, the farrier and the feed delivery do not each hold a different key from a different era.
Along the Wentworth Street equestrian corridor, the common request is the whole property: house, gate and barn on matching keys, or at least a clear plan for which locks share one. Gate and barn padlocks live outdoors, and this is where local weather matters. Strong seasonal Santa Ana winds blow dust and grit through the Hansen Dam basin, which can foul exterior gate locks and padlocks. A gritty lock that sticks is not always a keying problem, so we check it first, and if the gate hardware is the real issue, our gate lock repair page covers that side. Summer sun can also dry out wood doors on unshaded lots, which can make a latch bind even when the lock itself is fine.
Along the Foothill Boulevard corridor, apartment and condo complexes bring steady tenant turnover, which is where apartment lock rekey work comes in. Rekeying between tenants is the standard approach. Around the Hansen Dam area, and on larger exposed canyon-edge parcels near Shadow Hills and Kagel Canyon, homes sit farther apart and often farther from the road, so people tend to ask for a full set of locks done in one visit rather than several trips.
Because we work from mobile vans, we can come to those longer driveways and canyon-edge properties with the kit on board. You can also read how our mobile locksmith service works if you want details on that side.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We have been in business since 1987, and rekeying is one of the most basic jobs in the trade, which means we have done it on nearly every type of lock you are likely to own. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so there is a real shop behind the van that arrives. We are one company. There is no dispatch middleman who takes your call and hands the job to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, so if you are searching for rekey locks near me at an awkward hour because a key went missing, a person picks up.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, issued by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Ask any locksmith for that number before they work on your locks. It is a fair question, and a reputable company will not mind it.
What should you do after the rekey?
Once the locks are rekeyed, the new keys are the only ones that matter, so a little housekeeping goes a long way.
Decide how many copies you actually need and who gets them. If you want spares, the cleanest time to cut them is right after the rekey, so we can duplicate keys from the new set rather than copying from a worn original. Keep one spare somewhere secure that is not under the doormat or inside a fake rock.
If you run a rental or a business, write down who received which key and when. When someone leaves, you will know exactly what needs to be rekeyed next. And if you notice any door that sticks, drags or does not latch crisply, mention it while we are there. A rekey is a good moment to catch a small problem before it becomes a lockout.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a lock rekey take?
It depends on how many locks you have and what type they are. A single deadbolt is a short job, and a whole house with several doors, a gate and a barn takes longer. When you call (213) 577-1366, we will ask about the locks and give you a realistic idea of the visit before we come out.
Can you rekey my locks if I do not have any working key?
Often yes, as long as the lock itself is in working order and we can get the cylinder out. If you are locked out and cannot get in at all, that is a lockout first and a rekey second. Tell us the situation on the phone and we will plan it in the right order.
Will the old keys still work after rekeying?
No. The old key may slide into the lock, but it will not turn, because the internal pins no longer match its cuts. We test this on every lock before we leave, so you see for yourself that the old key is dead.
Can all the locks on my house use the same key?
In most cases, yes. We can rekey compatible locks to a single key, which is popular for ranch homes with several doors, gates and outbuildings. If your locks are mixed brands or have restricted keyways, we will tell you which ones can be combined and which cannot.
Is rekeying cheaper than replacing locks?
Usually it is the more economical route when the locks are in good shape, since you keep the hardware and only change the pins and keys. It is not automatic, though. If a lock is worn or damaged, replacing it can make more sense. We will tell you which applies before we start.
Can you rekey smart locks or high-security locks?
Many smart locks have a keyed cylinder underneath, and that part can often be rekeyed, while the electronic codes are changed through the lock itself. High-security cylinders vary, and some require manufacturer-controlled key blanks. Give us the brand and model and we will confirm what is possible rather than guess.
Do I need to be home when you rekey the locks?
Someone with authority over the property needs to let us in and approve the work. For a rental, a property manager or landlord can arrange this. We can discuss access options on the phone.
Can I rekey my own locks with a kit?
Some residential locks can be rekeyed with a retail kit, and handy people do it. The risks are mismatched pins, a lock that binds, or a key that works only part of the time. We rekey locks every week, and we test each one before we leave.
