Why won't my gate lock, latch, or open?
A gate takes more abuse than any door on your property. It lives outside all year, gets slammed, leaned on, bumped by vehicles, and almost never gets any maintenance. When a gate won't lock, the cause is usually one of a short list of problems, and most of them are easy to see once someone looks closely.
Here are the causes we run into most often when we are called about a gate that won't lock or won't open:
- The gate has sagged on its hinges, so the latch no longer lines up with the strike plate and the bolt can't catch.
- Dust and grit have packed into the lock cylinder or padlock, so the key sticks, drags, or refuses to turn.
- The latch spring is weak or the latch tongue is worn, and the gate bounces open after it closes.
- A keypad or electronic gate lock has a dead battery, a failed keypad, or moisture in the electronics.
- A post, strike, or latch is bent or cracked from a vehicle bump or someone forcing the gate.
- Hinges or pivots have rusted or seized, so the gate no longer swings true.
- A key has snapped off inside the lock.
Is it the lock, or is it the gate?
This is the first question we answer on every gate call, because it decides what you should spend money on. A brand-new lock bolted to a gate that has dropped out of alignment will fail the same way the old one did. If the lock is fine and the gate is the problem, we will say so rather than sell you hardware you don't need.
Sometimes the fix is on our side of the work: adjusting or replacing the latch, resetting the strike, cleaning and servicing the cylinder, or swapping the whole lock. Sometimes the gate itself needs welding, new posts, or new hinges, which is a fence or gate contractor's job. We'll tell you plainly which one you have, and we'll still make the gate secure as far as the hardware allows.
How does a gate lock repair work, step by step?
We keep the process simple and we explain each piece as we go. This is how a typical gate call runs with Wilshire Lock & Key:
- You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and tell us what kind of gate it is: a pedestrian side gate or a driveway gate, swinging or sliding, wood, steel, or iron, and what lock is on it now.
- We send a mobile van from our own company. There is no third-party dispatch service in the middle, so the person who answers the phone is part of the same operation that sends the technician.
- The technician inspects more than the lock. We check hinges, posts, strike alignment, latch travel, whether the gate closes by itself, and how the lock behaves from both sides.
- We tell you what we found and whether we recommend repair or replacement, and we explain the scope of work before we start.
- We do the work: clean and service the lock, realign the strike, replace the latch, rekey the cylinder, or install a new gate lock, depending on what the gate needs.
- We test the gate closed and latched from both sides, over repeated cycles, then hand over keys or codes and show you how the lock operates. If you want the old parts back, just ask.

Call (213) 577-1366Should I repair or replace my gate lock?
Repair is usually the more economical route when the lock is basically sound and something around it has gone wrong. Replacement makes sense when the lock itself has worn out, is the wrong type for outdoor use, or no longer fits how you use the gate. Our lock repair and lock replacement work covers both, and on a gate call we decide between them on site.
Repair tends to make sense when:
- The lock turns smoothly with a clean key but the latch has drifted out of alignment.
- The cylinder is only dirty or dry and can be cleaned and serviced.
- A spring, strike, or latch tongue can be replaced without changing the whole lock.
- The hardware is a good grade and the damage is limited.
- Replacement tends to make sense when the lock body is corroded through, the cylinder is badly worn, the keypad has failed, the hardware is an indoor-rated lock that was never meant to live outside, or parts are no longer available.
What are my options for keypad, electronic, and smart gate locks?
Gate lock installation today ranges from a plain keyed latch to a fully electronic setup. Each has trade-offs, and we would rather you choose the one that suits your gate than the one with the most features.
A mechanical keyed gate lock is the simplest and often the most reliable outdoors. It has no battery and nothing to short out. The downside is that keys get lost and copied, and everyone who has had a key still has one until you change the lock.
A keypad gate lock removes the key problem. Family, a dog walker, or a landscaper can each use a code, and you can change the code when something changes. The trade-offs are batteries, weather exposure, and the need to pick a keypad rated for outdoor use. Electronic gate locks that use fobs or cards add convenience for shared entrances, and larger multi-user setups overlap with access control installation.
Smart gate lock installation is possible, but a gate is a harder place for one than a front door. A gate may be far from your Wi-Fi router, exposed to sun, dust, and rain, and not near any power. If you want app control or a connected lock, we will look at the signal, the power source, and the weather rating of the product first. Our smart lock installation page covers connected locks in general. For a gate, we will tell you honestly if a good mechanical or keypad lock is the smarter choice.
One boundary worth stating: we work on the lock and latch side of a gate. If you have a motorized swing or sliding driveway gate, the opener motor and control board are a different trade. When your problem turns out to be the operator and not the lock, we will tell you so you don't pay for the wrong repair.

Call (213) 577-1366What makes a good outdoor, weather-resistant gate lock in Sylmar?
A weather-resistant gate lock is built for the conditions it will actually see. In Sylmar, the two that matter most are heat and dust. Summers in this northern corner of the Valley run very hot, which heats metal and plastic and can loosen or warp materials around the lock. Strong Santa Ana winds funnel through Newhall Pass and the foothill canyons and drive dust into outdoor padlocks and gate locks.
That combination is hard on a cheap indoor-grade lock. When we choose an outdoor gate lock, we look for:
- Corrosion-resistant bodies and cylinders made for exterior use, rather than plated indoor hardware.
- Dust covers or shutters on the keyway, or padlocks with shrouded shackles that keep grit out of the mechanism.
- Keypads and electronics rated for outdoor exposure, with sealed housings and replaceable batteries you can reach.
- Latches that tolerate a little gate movement, since a gate in wind and heat never sits perfectly still.
- Maintenance that suits dust: a dry lubricant on a clean lock works better than oil, which holds dust like flypaper.
How much does gate lock repair cost in Sylmar?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because gates vary too much for a figure to mean anything. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost, so the quote you get from us or anyone else makes sense.
Several things affect the cost of a gate lock repair or replacement:
- Repair or replacement: cleaning, realigning, and adjusting is usually the more economical route when the lock is otherwise sound.
- Type of lock: a mechanical latch, a keypad lock, an electronic fob lock, and a connected smart lock sit in very different ranges.
- Grade of hardware: outdoor-rated, corrosion-resistant hardware costs more up front and lasts longer on a gate.
- Condition of the gate: if the gate or post needs structural work before a lock will hold, that work is separate.
- Number of locks: keying several gates or padlocks alike is more work than one lock.
- Power and wiring: electronic locks may need power, a transformer, or cable routing.
- Time of day: after-hours and weekend calls involve different logistics than a scheduled daytime visit.
- Distance: Sylmar is roughly 24 miles from our Westwood storefront, and the trip is part of a mobile call.

Call (213) 577-1366What to know before you hire any locksmith
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, called a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work starts, and expect a straight answer. A company that won't give one is a company to walk away from.
Also ask for the scope of work and the reason for it before the technician starts. A reputable locksmith explains what is wrong, shows you what they plan to do, and lets you decide. That is how we run our calls, and it applies whether you hire us or someone else. If you want a mobile technician in general, our mobile locksmith page explains how vans work.
Gate lock work around Sylmar: Foothill Boulevard, El Cariso, and the canyon edges
Sylmar, ZIP code 91342, has a lot of gates, and they aren't all the same kind of gate. Housing is largely postwar through 1980s tract homes, and in those neighborhoods, including the tract streets around Los Angeles Mission College, the gate that fails is usually the wooden or metal side gate on the property line. Latches sag with the wood, dust gets into cylinders, and a gate that no longer latches properly leaves the backyard open. If you've just moved into a tract home, it is also worth having the house locks looked at, and our lock rekey service handles that.
Along the Foothill Boulevard corridor there are newer gated townhome and small-lot developments. Shared pedestrian and vehicle gates in a community like that usually belong to the association or management, not to an individual resident. If you are in a gated townhome community off Foothill Boulevard, the first step is to contact your property manager or board. We will ask who is authorized to approve the work, because we need that confirmation before changing or repairing a shared gate.
On the larger lots, long driveways, detached garages, and perimeter gates are common, and the foothill edges include horse-keeping parcels. Gate lock and padlock work on horse-keeping properties near the foothills is its own kind of job. The gate holds animals in and keeps people out, so a latch that bounces open or a padlock packed with dust is a real problem, not just an inconvenience. Properties in the El Cariso area, the Olive View area, and near Kagel Canyon or Lopez Canyon are the kind of foothill-edge properties where exposure to wind and dust is highest and where hardware choice matters most.
Sylmar's mobile home parks are another setting where gates and locks are shared or semi-shared. Many are managed communities, so the same rule applies: we'll confirm who can authorize work before we change a shared gate. If you're on the Hubbard Street corridor or the Glenoaks Boulevard corridor and aren't sure whether a gate belongs to you or to a landlord, the first call is to whoever manages the property. Landlords with several gated units can also read about our locksmith for landlords service.

Call (213) 577-1366What should I have ready when I call about a gate?
A few details make the call quicker and let us bring the right parts on the van:
- Whether it is a pedestrian gate or a driveway gate, and whether it swings or slides.
- What it is made of: wood, tubular steel, wrought iron, chain link, or aluminum.
- What lock is on it now, and whether it is keyed, keypad, electronic, or a padlock.
- What the gate is doing: not latching, key won't turn, keypad dead, or gate won't open.
- Whether a key has broken in the lock, in which case see our broken key extraction page.
- Whether you share the gate with neighbors, a landlord, or an association.
What if the gate isn't the only problem?
Gate calls sometimes turn into something bigger. If a gate lock failed and you are now locked out of the house behind it, that is a house lockout situation, and the same van can handle it. If you want help on a different property, our Sylmar locksmith page lists the full range of services. We stay on the service you called about, and we will tell you what else we notice.
Frequently asked questions
Can you repair my gate lock the same day?
We answer the phone 24 hours a day at (213) 577-1366 and send a mobile van, and we will tell you what is realistic once we know your gate and your location. Many gate repairs, such as cleaning a cylinder, realigning a strike, or swapping a latch, can be finished in one visit. Unusual or specialty hardware sometimes has to be ordered, and we will say so up front.
My gate won't lock even though the lock itself works. What's wrong?
Usually the gate has sagged or the post has shifted, so the latch no longer meets the strike. Heat, age, and repeated slamming all contribute. We check alignment first. Sometimes adjusting or resetting the strike fixes it, and sometimes the gate needs hinge or post work that a gate or fence contractor should do.
Can you install a keypad lock on my existing gate?
Often yes, but it depends on the gate. We look at the material, the frame, where the latch sits, and whether the keypad needs power or can run on batteries. We also make sure the keypad is rated for outdoor use. If your gate won't support the lock you want, we will tell you what will work instead.
Do you work on motorized driveway gates?
We handle the lock and latch side of pedestrian and driveway gates. The opener motor, remotes, and control board belong to a different trade. If we find that your problem is the operator and not the lock, we will tell you so you can get the right repair.
Is a smart gate lock a good idea in Sylmar's heat and dust?
It can be, if the product is rated for outdoor use and the gate is within reach of your Wi-Fi and power. Sylmar summers are very hot and Santa Ana winds push dust into outdoor locks, so a cheap or indoor-rated smart lock will not last. For many gates, a quality mechanical or keypad lock is the more dependable choice, and we will say so honestly.
Do I need permission to change a shared community gate lock?
Yes. If the gate belongs to a townhome community, mobile home park, or landlord, the owner, association, or manager has to authorize the work. We will ask who is approving it before we change or repair shared hardware, and we may ask for confirmation that you are authorized.
Can you rekey a gate lock instead of replacing it?
If the lock is in good shape, rekeying is often the more economical route, and it makes old keys useless. If the lock is corroded, worn, or the wrong type for outdoor use, replacement makes more sense. Our key duplication service can also cut extra keys once the lock is sorted.
My gate won't lock tonight and I have animals or a pool. What should I do?
Call (213) 577-1366 any time of day or night. Tell us what the gate is doing, and we will send a van. If the right replacement hardware isn't on hand, we will do what we can to secure the gate until the permanent fix, and we'll be honest about what that temporary fix can and can't do.
How do I know a gate locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, so ask for the license number before work begins. Also ask what the problem is, what the scope of work is, and why. A trustworthy locksmith will answer plainly and let you decide.
