What do Lexus owners in Sun Valley usually need?
Most Lexus key calls in Sun Valley follow how people here live and park. In the Stonehurst tract and on the postwar bungalow and ranch-house streets, a Lexus usually sits in a driveway or at the curb out front, and the trouble is typically a dead smart-fob battery or a key that disappeared somewhere inside the house. Along Glenoaks Boulevard and the other busy corridors, apartment pockets mean shared lots and street parking, and a lost fob there can turn into a lockout and a replacement in a single visit.
Some cars are not at home at all. A Lexus left near the Sun Valley Metrolink Station can sit for a long stretch, and the key problem shows up only when the owner walks back to it. Along the San Fernando Road industrial corridor, vehicles are parked at work behind yards and gates, and a lockout there interrupts the whole day. We bring the van to wherever the car is.
In every case, the first things we need are the model and the year. A Lexus from the mid-2000s and a 2023 RX are completely different jobs, and the rest of this page explains why. If you are locked out but still have your key somewhere, our car lockout service in Sun Valley covers that separately.
How does mobile Lexus key service work at the curb?
A mobile visit saves you from towing a car that cannot be started. Here is how it normally goes.
- Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us the model, the year, whether the car has a push-button start or a key you turn, and whether you still have any working key.
- We explain what that kind of Lexus involves before we drive out, including whether the job is one that may need manufacturer server access or the dealer.
- The van comes to your curb, driveway, apartment lot or work yard. We ask for proof the car is yours, such as registration and ID that match the vehicle.
- We confirm the exact key type by VIN and in person, because changeover years vary by model.
- If the key has a laser-cut blade, we cut it. Then we program the key or fob through the OBD-II port with professional equipment.
- We test everything before you sign off: the doors, the buttons, the hidden emergency blade, and several engine starts.
Which generation of Lexus key do you have?
Lexus follows Toyota's chip technology but moved to smart keys earlier than most brands. Here is the progression in plain terms. Exact changeover years differ by model, so treat this as a guide rather than a promise about your particular car.
- Late 1990s to roughly 2005: fixed-code transponder keys on laser-cut blades, first a longer style and then a shorter one.
- 2001 to 2009: a more secure chip in a short high-security key, on models such as the LS430, GX470, ES330 and RX330 or RX350.
- About 2006 onward, model by model: first-generation push-button-start smart systems. The IS arrived in 2006, the ES and LS in 2007, and the RX and GX in 2010.
- 2010 to 2017: a newer-generation smart fob on RX, GX and LS models.
- From 2013: 128-bit encrypted smart keys, sold in several fob families.
- 2022 and newer NX, 2023 and newer RX, and the new GX550: server-authenticated smart keys, where the key registration is tied to the manufacturer's system.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What if you have lost every Lexus key?
All-keys-lost is where the model year matters most, and we would rather be plain about it than oversell. On 2000s bladed keys, all-keys-lost programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. Toyota's own reset path, which uses a security pass-code, covers 1998 through 2023 models.
First-generation smart-key cars, roughly 2006 to 2012, historically meant resetting or replacing the smart computer, or going to the dealer. Current professional tools can usually reset the smart code through OBD, but we confirm coverage vehicle by vehicle. Cars from 2013 on accept an added spare key easily over OBD, while all-keys-lost on those uses specialist emulator hardware.
From about 2020, all-keys-lost in the US increasingly requires Toyota or Lexus server codes, which means credentialed locksmith access or tool-specific authorization. On the newest platforms, meaning the 2022 and newer NX, 2023 and newer RX, 2024 and newer GX550 and the 2026 ES, all-keys-lost is possible on many with specialist server-connected equipment. Coverage is still maturing, though, and some jobs remain dealer-only. If yours is one of them, we will say so on the phone rather than send a van for nothing. Our page on lost car key replacement in Sun Valley walks through the general process.
What affects the cost of a Lexus key in Sun Valley?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car. These are the real factors that move the cost:
- Key generation. A bladed transponder key and a smart fob are very different parts.
- The newest systems. Replacing a lost smart fob costs well above an ordinary bladed key, especially on 2020 and newer server-authenticated cars.
- Whether you still have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route compared with all-keys-lost.
- Server access. Newer Lexus models may need manufacturer server codes or specialist connected equipment, which adds to the job.
- Blade cutting. A laser-cut blade has to be cut in addition to the electronic programming.
- Condition of the old key. A cracked shell or broken buttons can sometimes be fixed, but a water-damaged board may call for a new fob.
- The actual fault. If the fob only needs a battery, you should not be paying for a new key.
Dealer or mobile locksmith: what makes sense for a Lexus?
Both are legitimate choices. The dealer can reach manufacturer systems directly, which matters on the newest platforms where some jobs are still dealer-only. If your car falls in that group, we will tell you honestly, and you should go to the dealer.
For many other situations, a mobile locksmith is the practical call. The car does not have to be towed, which is the main problem when no key will start it. You are not working around dealer appointment hours, and our phone is answered around the clock. For 2000s Lexus models and many from the 2010s, professional equipment handles the job at the car.
If you have a working key and just want a spare, it is reasonable to ask both places what they would do and compare. And if a dead battery is all that is wrong, you may not need either. See our overview of Lexus key services for more on the models we handle.

Call (213) 577-1366What Lexus key problems come up most often?
Telling these apart saves money, so we diagnose before we replace anything.
- Dead smart-fob battery. The car reports that the key is not detected, yet the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. A battery often solves it.
- Worn ignition on high-mileage 2000s models. The key sticks or stops turning because the lock wafers are worn, not because the key chip failed.
- Worn or chipped laser-cut blades. The blade no longer turns the locks even though the chip inside still works.
- Hardware-store copies. A blade cut without a transponder will open the doors but will not start the engine.
- Cracked fob shells, broken buttons and water-damaged boards. Some can be repaired, and some need a replacement.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Lexus?
We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call, you reach the company that sends the van, not a dispatch middleman who passes your job to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
One practical point whoever you call: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. You can also explore our wider car key services or reach us through the contact page.
Lexus key service around Sun Valley
Sun Valley is about 17 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we cover ZIP 91352 with mobile vans. That includes the Stonehurst tract with its 1920s river-rock cottages, the La Tuna Canyon area, and homes along the Roscoe Boulevard, Glenoaks Boulevard and Sunland Boulevard corridors. We also work around the Sun Valley Park area and the edges near Shadow Hills and Hansen Dam.
If your Lexus is parked outside the Stonehurst Recreation Center, the Sun Valley Recreation Center or the Fernangeles Recreation Center, or near John H. Francis Polytechnic High School or La Tuna Canyon Park, tell us the closest cross street and we will find you. The same goes for lots along San Fernando Road or near the Metrolink station.
Local conditions matter a little. Hot, dry summers swell wooden doors and frames, and Santa Ana winds carry dust that works into exterior lock cylinders. If an older Lexus has a key that has started to stick, mention it when you call. For the full picture of what we do here, see our Sun Valley locksmith page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you come to a Sun Valley address late at night?
Yes. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and the mobile vans work the same hours. Tell us the cross street or the lot you are parked in.
My Lexus says the key is not detected. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead smart-fob battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade will usually still open the door. Call us with the model and year, and we will tell you whether it sounds like a battery or a failed fob.
Can you make a Lexus key if I have lost all of them?
Often, yes, but it depends on the year. Many 2000s models program through the OBD-II port, and 2013 and newer cars use specialist emulator hardware. The newest platforms may need server access, and some jobs remain dealer-only. We confirm by VIN.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Lexus?
A blade cut without a transponder chip will usually open the doors but will not start the engine. The chip has to be programmed to the car, so the copy by itself is not enough.
Can you replace the key for a 2023 or newer RX or the new GX550?
We may be able to, since these use server-authenticated keys and specialist connected equipment works on many of them. Coverage is still maturing, and some jobs are dealer-only. We confirm by VIN and tell you plainly before we come out.
Do I need to prove the car is mine?
Yes. We ask for registration and ID that match the vehicle before cutting or programming a key. It protects you as the owner.
Can the key be programmed at my car, or does it need to go to a shop?
For most 2000s bladed keys and many later models, programming happens at the car through the OBD-II port. We confirm what your specific Lexus needs after checking the VIN.
My Lexus key sticks in the ignition. Is the key bad?
On high-mileage 2000s models it is often worn lock wafers in the ignition rather than the key itself. A worn or chipped blade can cause similar trouble. We look at both before replacing anything.
