What do Hyundai owners in South Gate usually need?
Most Hyundai calls here fall into a few groups: a lost or stolen key, a spare that was never made, a fob that has stopped working, or a car that will not start with a key that used to work. There is also a question that belongs to Hyundai more than almost any other brand: does my car even have a chip? We come back to that below, because the answer changes the whole job.
Where these calls happen follows how people live. South Gate grew quickly from the 1920s through the 1940s, and much of it is small bungalows and early post-war homes, often with a rear unit or converted garage sharing the lot. Cars end up on the street, in a shared driveway, or in a lot behind the building, and one key often serves several drivers. When that single key disappears, there is no spare to fall back on.
Small apartment buildings along Long Beach Boulevard follow the same pattern: street parking, many renters, and keys passed between roommates and relatives. A key lost somewhere between the building door and the car is a typical story. If the key is simply locked inside, see our South Gate car lockout service. If it is gone for good, read on.
How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?
We drive to the car, wherever it is parked. You do not need to tow it anywhere, and for most Hyundai key jobs a tow would only add cost. A typical visit goes like this:
- You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. We ask for the year, model and trim, and whether the car uses a turn key, a flip key, or a push-button start.
- We ask what you have in hand: a working key, a broken one, or nothing at all, and whether the dash shows a key or lock light.
- At the car, we confirm you own it by checking your registration or title against your photo ID. We do this on every job, and it is the reason a stolen car cannot simply be keyed up.
- We check the VIN and, when needed, the fob part number, so we cut or order the right key instead of guessing.
- We cut the blade. If the car has an immobilizer, we program the key through the OBD-II port. If it is a base trim with no immobilizer, the cut key is the whole job.
- We test it: start the car several times, then try the door locks, trunk and remote buttons before handing over every key.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Hyundai key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Hyundai's key history is split by trim, so model year alone will not tell you what is in your hand. When a car does have a chip, the general progression looks like this:
- Late 1990s and early 2000s: a Texas 4D-60 chip on some cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe.
- Through the 2000s and into the early 2010s: Philips ID46 chips.
- Mid to late 2010s: DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES '8A' chip listed on some models.
- Newest generations: NXP Hitag-AES smart keys, arriving by model. Elantra from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, Tucson from 2025.
Why we confirm the chip before ordering a fob
On those newest smart keys, parts sellers label the chip inconsistently. Most are listed as '4A', but the 2021 and newer Elantra splits between '4A' and '6A'. We do not trust a listing. We confirm the chip by the part number on your fob before anything is ordered.
One simple check first: if a smart Hyundai says 'key not detected' but the emergency blade still opens the door, the fob battery may just be dead. That is a battery issue, not a replacement. If the fob itself is the problem, our key fob replacement in South Gate page explains how we handle it.
Does your Hyundai have an immobilizer at all?
This is the Hyundai-specific part, and it surprises people. A very large share of 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers the Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even the Palisade 2020-2021. That gap is the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave.
In practice, on a no-immobilizer car any properly cut metal key starts it, and there is nothing to program. That is why a hardware-store copy works on some Hyundais and not others. On a chip-equipped trim, the same copy may turn the lock but will not start the engine. Trim and build date decide, not model year alone. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.
If your car was caught up in the theft wave, you may need more than a key. Ignition lock cylinders and steering columns are often damaged in attempts. We handle the lock and key side. The anti-theft software update is Hyundai's own program, so ask a Hyundai dealer about it.
What if you have lost every Hyundai key?
It sounds worse than it usually is. On an immobilizer-equipped Hyundai, we program through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and on most 2006-2019 models the tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN. Add-a-key and all-keys-lost are routine locksmith jobs there, with no dealer involved. On a base car with no immobilizer, we cut a new key and it starts the car. More on that process is on our lost car key replacement page for South Gate.
The newest cars are the honest exception. On the Hitag-AES '4A' generations, roughly 2023 onward depending on model, aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is an all-keys-lost on a 2023 Santa Fe using an Autel IM-series tool with an on-tool PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage per job, and we tell you before we start if the dealer is the right path.
One caution: low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs often fail intermittently. A bargain fob that works for a week and then strands you is no bargain.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Hyundai key in South Gate?
We do not print numbers on a web page, because an honest quote depends on your car. These are the things that move it:
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A cut metal key on a no-immobilizer trim is the lighter-cost job. A chip car needs the key plus programming.
- The key type: plain blade, flip key, or push-button smart key.
- Whether we have a working key to copy (add-a-key) or all keys are lost.
- The confirmed chip and fob part number, which matters most on the newest smart keys.
- Whether tool coverage lets us finish at the curb or the car needs dealer service.
- Damage to the ignition or door locks, including damage from a theft attempt.
- The time of day and how far the van travels. South Gate is about 17 miles from our Westwood storefront.
How to keep the bill down
We quote once we know the year, trim and key type, and before work starts. The usually more economical route is a spare made while you still hold a working key, because that avoids an all-keys-lost job. On a no-immobilizer trim, a properly cut key is often all you need.
Dealer or locksmith: an honest comparison
A Hyundai dealer has real advantages on the newest models, where factory access can matter, and it is the place for the anti-theft software update and warranty work. If your car falls in a tool-coverage gap, we will say so and point you there.
For most other Hyundai key jobs, we are the more practical choice. We come to the car, so there is no tow, and the work is usually done in one visit. Dealers generally need the car delivered to their service department and work business hours. If you are stuck in a parking lot at night, that matters.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. You reach one company, not a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work begins. That applies to every company you call, including us.
Hyundai key service around South Gate and ZIP 90280
We serve all of 90280 and the streets around it. That includes Hollydale in the southeast, the Tweedy Mile business district, the area around South Gate Park and the Civic Center, and the Long Beach Boulevard, Firestone Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue corridors. The industrial northwest along the LA River is covered too, as are cars parked near Hollydale Regional Park, the Azalea Regional Shopping Center, or the East Los Angeles College South Gate Educational Center.
The setting is a flat inland plain with mild winters and warm summers. Salt-air corrosion is not a practical concern here, so a worn key or sticky ignition on a South Gate Hyundai usually comes from years of use rather than weather.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new Hyundai key if I have lost all my keys?
Usually yes. On most 2006-2019 immobilizer models, our tools can read or calculate the PIN through the OBD-II port, so it is a routine job. On the newest 2023-and-later generations, coverage varies by model and tool, and some jobs may need the dealer. We confirm that before starting.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Hyundai?
Only if the car has no immobilizer. Many 2011-2022 base turn-key trims have none, and a properly cut metal key starts them. On chip-equipped trims, a plain copy will not start the car. Trim and build date decide, so we check your specific car.
Does my Hyundai need programming?
If it has an immobilizer, yes. If it is a base trim without one, no programming is needed. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.
Can you work on a 2023 or newer Hyundai?
Sometimes, and we are straight about it. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented on some newest models, including an all-keys-lost on a 2023 Santa Fe. Tool coverage is still maturing, though, and some cars may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm per job.
What do I need to show you?
Your registration or title and a photo ID that matches. We check ownership on every key job. It protects you and keeps stolen vehicles from being keyed.
Do you come out at night and on weekends?
Yes. Our line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our vans come to you in South Gate.
My smart key says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. If the emergency blade still opens the door, the fob battery may be dead. Try a battery first. If the fob still fails, it may need replacement or reprogramming.
Is my Hyundai one of the cars in the theft-wave software update?
Hyundai's list covers many 2011-2022 models, including the Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Accent, Kona, and the 2020-2021 Palisade. The update comes from Hyundai, so ask a dealer. We can repair a damaged ignition lock and cut keys.
