What Hyundai owners in Signal Hill typically need

Signal Hill is a small city on a hill, and the way people live here shapes how Hyundai key problems show up. The lower slopes hold 1920s-1940s oil-boom cottages with street parking. The hilltop has view-home tracts, townhomes and gated developments. Apartments run along Willow Street and Cherry Avenue. A Hyundai in any of those places is usually parked outside, overnight, within sight of the street.

That mix produces a fairly predictable set of calls. Most are a lost or broken key, a smart fob that has stopped being detected, or a car that is locked with the key inside. Some are about theft. Hyundai's base turn-key trims from the 2011-2022 stretch were hit hard by the 2021-2023 theft wave, so we also get people whose ignition was damaged and who need more than a new key.

  • Lost or snapped keys, including worn ones on high-mileage cars
  • Add-a-key jobs when you only have one working key left
  • Smart fobs that show 'key not detected' even though the battery was recently changed or the blade still opens the door
  • Ignition lock cylinders and steering columns damaged in an attempted theft
  • Hardware-store copies that open the door but will not start the car

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

We bring the equipment to wherever the car is sitting: a driveway off Panorama Drive, a curb near Hilltop Park, an apartment lot on Willow Street. The work is done on the spot, so the car does not need to be towed to a shop or the dealership.

Here is how a typical job goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers any hour of the day or night. We ask for the year, model and trim, and where the car is parked.
  2. We ask whether the car has a turn key with a plastic head or a push-button start with a smart fob. We also ask for the VIN, since trim and build date matter more than model year on a Hyundai.
  3. If you are locked out, we open the car first without damaging the door or lock. If the car is only locked and you have a working key, that is often the whole job.
  4. We check what the car actually carries. A base trim with no immobilizer is a different job from one with a chip, and we tell you which you have before we cut or program anything.
  5. We cut the blade by code or from the lock, program the key or fob through the OBD-II port where the car calls for it, and test every function: door, trunk, remote buttons and starting.
  6. You see the result working before payment is settled. Any old keys that are still around can be kept or removed from the car's memory, as you choose.

Hyundai key eras in plain terms

Hyundai's US key history is unusually split by trim level, so the model year alone rarely tells the story. Here is the short version of how the chips progressed, when a chip is present at all.

Some late-1990s and early-2000s cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60 chip. Through the 2000s and early 2010s the common system was the Philips ID46. In the mid-to-late 2010s Hyundai moved to DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with Texas DST-AES listed on some models. The newest generations use NXP Hitag-AES smart keys: Elantra from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024 and Tucson from 2025.

Parts sellers label those newest NXP chips inconsistently. Most are listed as '4A', but the 2021 and newer Elantra is split between '4A' and '6A' listings. Because of that, we confirm the chip by the fob part number instead of trusting a listing. That is why we ask for the VIN and, when we are with the car, look at the key itself.

  • Older chip keys (4D-60, ID46): usually a straightforward OBD-II programming job
  • Mid-2010s flip keys and Hitag-3: also programmed by OBD-II with professional tools
  • Newest Hitag-AES smart keys: possible, but we confirm coverage for your exact car first

Why a plain metal copy sometimes starts a Hyundai and sometimes does not

This is the part that surprises most owners. A very large share of 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers the Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even the Palisade 2020-2021. That missing immobilizer is the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave.

On those cars no programming is needed. Any properly cut metal key starts the engine, which is why a hardware-store copy can work. On a chip-equipped trim the same copy will turn in the door and then fail to start the car. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.

If your Hyundai is one of the no-immobilizer cars, a new key may be only part of the fix. Owners often also need a repaired ignition and Hyundai's free anti-theft software update. We can handle the key and the ignition side, and we will tell you plainly when the software update is a dealer matter.

What if I've lost every Hyundai key?

All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On immobilizer-equipped Hyundais, the car programs through the OBD-II port with professional tools. On most 2006-2019 models the tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN, so add-a-key and all-keys-lost are routine locksmith jobs that do not require the dealer.

On a base no-immobilizer car, it is even simpler. We cut a key and the car starts, with nothing to program.

The newest Hitag-AES '4A' generations, roughly 2023 and newer depending on the model, are a different story. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented. A 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost, for example, has been done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing and PIN-read support varies by tool and model. Some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage for your car before starting, and we say so up front if the dealer is the right route.

What affects the cost of Hyundai key replacement in Signal Hill?

We do not quote numbers on a web page because the same model can be a very different job from one VIN to the next. These are the things that actually move the cost.

The biggest factor is the type of key: a plain metal key for a no-immobilizer trim, a transponder key, a flip key, or a smart fob. They are different parts and different labor. Next is whether you have a working key. Adding a copy is usually less involved than starting from zero when every key is lost.

Newer generations with Hitag-AES smart keys can take more time and more specialized tool support than a 2010s chip key. Fob quality matters too. Cloned or low-grade aftermarket chips and fobs sometimes fail intermittently, which is why we point out when a cheaper-looking part is a false economy. Finally, damage counts. If an ignition cylinder or steering column was hit in a theft attempt, repairing it is separate from making the key.

Because time of day and location also play a part, we give you the figure by phone once we know the VIN and the situation, before we start work.

Dealer or mobile locksmith: what's fair to say

The dealer is a reasonable choice in some cases. If you need Hyundai's free anti-theft software update, that comes from the dealer. If your car is one of the newest Hitag-AES models where tool coverage is still maturing, the dealer or a NASTF-credentialed service may be the only route, and we will tell you so honestly.

For most other situations, a locksmith can do the same work on site. Immobilizer-equipped Hyundais program through the OBD-II port, and PINs are readable on most 2006-2019 models. You avoid arranging a tow, and you do not need to wait for a service appointment when the car is stranded at night or on a weekend. For a car that has no key at all, mobile service is often the more practical route.

One more point: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their number before they work on your car, including us.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key

We have been in business since 1987, working from a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood with mobile service vans on the road. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch center that resells the job to whoever is available. The person who answers works for the same company that sends the van.

David is the owner and lead technician, and he oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, which includes Signal Hill. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, because car keys get lost and break at all hours.

Our main Hyundai key page goes through the make in more depth, and our car key replacement overview for Signal Hill covers other brands.

Hyundai key service around Signal Hill: neighborhoods and ZIP 90755

Signal Hill is covered by a single ZIP, 90755, but the city has several distinct parking situations. In the hilltop view-home district along Panorama and Skyline drives, cars are usually in driveways or garages, and calls tend to be about a lost key or a fob that has stopped working. In the gated Promontory at Signal Hill communities, we need gate access arranged ahead of time, so tell us when you call.

In the Eastbluff Estates area, the housing is a similar mix of tracts and townhomes, and a mobile visit is typically an add-a-key or a smart-fob problem. Along Willow Street and Cherry Avenue, where apartments cluster, lockouts are common because cars sit on the street or in shared lots. If you are near California Heights on the Long Beach side, we reach you the same way.

Around the Signal Hill Auto Center on Cherry Avenue, we do commercial lock and key work for dealerships. If a Hyundai is on a lot there, or you are parked at Costco Signal Hill, Hilltop Park, Signal Hill Park or Discovery Well Park and the key is locked inside, we can come to you. See our car lockout service in Signal Hill for that.

Signal Hill sits well above the surrounding coastal plain, so it catches marine-layer damp and a steady onshore breeze. Exterior hardware sees moderate salt exposure, less than beachfront Long Beach. For a Hyundai, that mostly means door-lock wafers and ignition cylinders can wear and stiffen over the years, which shows up as a key that sticks or does not turn smoothly. If your key feels rough in the lock, bring it up when you call.

If your fob is the problem, not the key, see key fob replacement in Signal Hill. For everything we do in the city, start at our Signal Hill locksmith page, or contact us to describe the car.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Hyundai key without the original?

Yes, in most cases. On immobilizer-equipped Hyundais the tool can usually read or calculate the PIN on most 2006-2019 models, so all-keys-lost is a routine job. On base no-immobilizer cars we simply cut a key. On the newest Hitag-AES models we confirm coverage for your VIN first.

Why won't my copied Hyundai key start the car?

Probably because your car has an immobilizer chip and the copy has none, or it was never programmed. A plain metal copy only starts the no-immobilizer base trims. Trim and build date, not model year alone, decide which kind you have.

Does my Hyundai have an immobilizer?

It depends on the trim and build date. Many 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped without one. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021. We check by VIN and in person instead of guessing from the model year.

My smart fob says 'key not detected.' Is the fob broken?

Often it is just a dead fob battery. If the emergency blade still opens the door, that points to the battery. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob itself may be failing, and that is a replacement or reprogramming job.

Is the free Hyundai anti-theft software update something you do?

No, that update comes from Hyundai, and it applies to the no-immobilizer models on their list. We can repair a damaged ignition and make keys, and we will tell you plainly which parts of the fix belong to the dealer.

Do you come to gated communities in Signal Hill?

Yes. For gated areas like the Promontory communities, tell us when you call so we can plan for gate access. We can also arrange to meet you at the entrance if that is easier.

Will you work on a Hyundai that is locked with the key inside?

Yes. We open the car without damaging the door or lock, and then handle the key side if needed. If the car is only locked and you have a working key, opening it may be the whole job.

How do I know your company is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts. We have been in business since 1987 with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and you can call (213) 577-1366 any hour.
