What do Ford owners in Signal Hill usually need?
Most Ford calls from Signal Hill follow a few patterns, and the patterns follow how people here live and park. Up on the hilltop, around the view-home tracts off Panorama and Skyline drives and the gated Promontory communities, the typical call is a spare that was never made, or a hardware-store copy that opens the door but will not start the engine. Down along Willow Street and Cherry Avenue, where the apartments cluster, the call is more often a lockout, or a key that went missing somewhere between the car and the unit.
The Signal Hill Auto Center district on Cherry Avenue is a different kind of customer altogether. Dealership lock and key work is a commercial job, not one driver with one key, and we scope it that way. And anywhere in the city, whether you are at Costco Signal Hill, Hilltop Park or Signal Hill Park, a dead fob battery or a worn key that sticks in the ignition can stop an ordinary errand cold. If you are locked out right now, our car lockout service in Signal Hill is the faster page to start with.
These are the Ford problems that come up most often:
- Worn ignition lock wafers: the key sticks or stops turning, usually on high-mileage vehicles
- Worn 8-cut key blades that no longer lift the wafers properly
- A flashing PATS theft light: the engine cranks but will not start because the chip is not being read
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which open the doors but will not start the engine
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons
- Dead smart-fob batteries and a 'No key detected' message
- Cheap cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently
How does mobile Ford key service work at the curb?
You do not need to tow the car anywhere. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 29 miles from Signal Hill, so the work happens from a mobile van parked next to your Ford. Here is the sequence on a typical call.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour, every day of the year. Tell us the year, model and trim, whether you have a metal blade key or push-button start, and how many working keys you still hold.
- We tell you what the job involves for that vehicle. If the model year puts it in dealer-only or credential-only territory, we say so on the phone, before anyone drives out.
- The van comes to you: a driveway, a street space, an apartment lot, a business lot. We ask for ID and proof that the vehicle is yours, because a key that starts a car is not something we cut for just anyone.
- We cut the blade, and for most 2000s and 2010s Fords we program the chip through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. PATS often imposes a timed security-access wait of around ten minutes, so do not be alarmed when the work pauses.
- We test everything: the door, the ignition or push-button start, and the remote functions. You see it work before we call the job finished.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Ford key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Ford keys fall into rough eras, and knowing yours tells us what the job involves. Changeover years differ by model, so treat this as a map and not a verdict. We confirm by VIN and in person before we promise anything.
- From about 1996 to 1999, SecuriLock/PATS spread across the lineup using a fixed-code Texas 4C chip. This is the H72-PT key era.
- In the mid-2000s most models moved to the Texas 4D63 crypto chip, the 40-bit era.
- Around 2011 to 2013, depending on the model, the 80-bit version of the 4D63 phased in. The Expedition is often listed as holding out until its 2015 refresh.
- From roughly 2013 to 2015 on, bladed keys on newer platforms use the 128-bit NXP Hitag Pro chip. That is confirmed on the 2015–2020 F-150 and the 2019 and later Ranger.
- Smart proximity fobs with push-button start spread trim by trim through the 2010s and are standard on most 2018 and later redesigns.
Are there Fords that break the pattern?
Yes, a few. The US Focus used the Texas 4D60 chip in 2000 to 2004. The 2013 to 2019 Escape kept 80-bit bladed keys and never made the move to 128-bit. The Ranger lagged the rest of the lineup: most trucks before 1999 have no transponder at all, and 2.5L four-cylinders have none through 2001. After that the Ranger takes 4C and 4D63-family keys like other Fords.
This is why we ask for the VIN instead of guessing from the badge on the trunk. If you want the broader picture, our Ford key pages and the general car keys overview go through the same ground, and our Signal Hill car key replacement page covers other makes.
What if I have lost every Ford key?
All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On bladed-key Fords, all-keys-lost by OBD is routine work: we cut a new blade from the vehicle's information, then program a new key through the OBD-II port, with that timed PATS wait in the middle.
Proximity-fob models are a bit harder. On roughly 2016 and later fob models, all-keys-lost can require an 'active alarm' bypass adapter alongside the programmer. Vendor kits list coverage for 2016 to 2020, and we confirm coverage for your exact vehicle first.
The newest Fords, roughly 2021 and later, are the honest exception. Ford's FDRS/FJDS software path requires NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) credentials, or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request, for PATS functions through non-dealer logins. Aftermarket tool coverage on these varies. Where a job may be dealer-or-VSP-only, we tell you that on the first call instead of sending a van and finding out at the curb.
If you are in the lost-key situation now, our lost car key replacement in Signal Hill page walks through what to gather before we arrive.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Ford key in Signal Hill?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your vehicle and your situation. These are the factors that move it:
- Key type: a basic transponder blade, a flip key, a remote-head key and a smart proximity fob are different parts with different costs.
- Model year and chip generation: older 4C and 4D63 jobs differ from 128-bit Hitag Pro and push-button systems.
- How many working keys you have: adding a spare to a car you can still start is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
- All-keys-lost complexity: some 2016 and later fob models need the extra bypass adapter on top of the programmer.
- Condition of the vehicle: a worn ignition lock or worn blade cuts can mean the new key still sticks, and that may need separate lock work.
- Time and place: a middle-of-the-night call from a parking lot is a different dispatch than a scheduled visit to your driveway.
- Quality of the key itself: low-quality clones can fail intermittently, so we do not treat the lowest-grade part as a saving.
Dealer or mobile locksmith: what is the fair comparison?
A Ford dealer is a perfectly good choice in some cases, and we will say so. On the newest models, where the work may require VSP credentials or an OEM request, the dealer can be the only route. If your Ford will not run at all and you would like the car diagnosed beyond the key, the dealer shop can do that too.
For most 2000s and 2010s Fords, a mobile locksmith is the more practical route. We come to the car, so you avoid towing a vehicle that will not start. The work is usually done in one visit, and we can often cut and program without the car leaving the curb. A dealer generally works through an appointment and the car coming to them.
So the honest answer is that it depends on the model year and on whether you can move the car. Call (213) 577-1366 with the year and VIN and we will tell you which side of the line your Ford is on, even if that line points to the dealer.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Ford key?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. There is a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile service vans, so you are dealing with a business that has an address and not a lead-generation site. When you call, you reach us. There are no dispatch middlemen passing your job to whoever is free.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on Fords because the model-year exceptions are real, and the right answer often comes from knowing when to check twice.
One more point that is just good practice: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts. Do the same with every company you call.

Call (213) 577-1366Ford key service around Signal Hill
Signal Hill sits above the surrounding coastal plain, so cars and keys catch marine-layer damp and steady onshore breeze. Exterior hardware sees moderate salt exposure, less than beachfront Long Beach. That is not a huge factor for key blades themselves, but damp and wear are friendly to sticking ignition cylinders and tired key buttons over the years.
We work all over the city under ZIP code 90755. On the hilltop, that includes the view-home district along Panorama and Skyline drives and the gated Promontory at Signal Hill, where we plan around gate access when we arrive. The Eastbluff Estates area and the older cottages on the lower slopes are part of the same service area. Along the Willow Street corridor and Cherry Avenue, apartment lots are the usual setting for lockouts and lost-key calls. The Signal Hill Auto Center district and the Spring Street industrial corridor get commercial work. We also cover the blocks near California Heights on the Long Beach side.
For a fob that has simply stopped working, our key fob replacement in Signal Hill page explains what is repairable and what is not. The full list of what we do here is on our Signal Hill locksmith page, and you can always reach us through the contact page or at (213) 577-1366.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Ford key if I have lost every one?
Usually yes. On bladed-key Fords, all-keys-lost by OBD is routine. Newer proximity-fob models can need extra equipment, and on roughly 2021 and later Fords the job may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We tell you which case you are in when you call.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Ford?
Often it will not. A copy cut without a transponder chip opens the doors but cannot start the engine, because PATS does not read a chip. A chip that is present but poorly made can also fail intermittently.
Can I program an extra Ford key myself?
On many bladed-key Fords, yes, if you have two working programmed keys. Trim and model-year exceptions exist, so we verify per generation. If you cannot meet that condition, a professional programmer is the next step.
My Ford says 'No key detected'. Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead smart-fob battery is a common cause of that message. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob or its programming may be the problem, and we can check which.
Do you come to apartment lots on Willow Street and Cherry Avenue?
Yes. Apartment lots in Signal Hill are a common place for lockouts and lost-key calls, and the van works right at the car. Have your ID and proof of ownership ready.
Can you get into the gated Promontory communities?
We can service vehicles there, but we will need the gate opened, either by you, a resident or the property's access process. Tell us when you call so we can plan for it.
How do you know which key will fit my year of Ford?
We go by the VIN and the physical vehicle, not by the model name alone. Changeover years vary by model, and there are outliers such as the Focus, Escape and Ranger. We confirm in person.
Is it cheaper to go to the dealer?
It depends on the vehicle and whether you can move it. Costs depend on key type, model year and how many keys you have left. For many older Fords, a mobile visit is the more economical route, but we will say plainly when the dealer is the only option.
