What kind of key does your Ford Edge use?

The Edge was sold in the US for two generations, and the key changed more than once along the way. The first generation (internal code U387) ran from 2007 to 2014. The second (CD539) ran from 2015 to 2024, and 2024 is the last US model year, since production ended in April 2024. Inside those two generations there are really four key eras, and each one calls for a different kind of job: plain transponder keys, remote-head keys, bladed flip keys, and smart proximity fobs with push-button start.

Knowing your era matters because it decides what we need to see before we start, what the key is made of, and how much of the job can be done in your driveway. The year-by-year table on this page lists the key type for each model year. The sections below explain what that table means for you in practice. If your Edge sits near one of the boundaries, such as a 2011 or a 2019, give us the VIN and we will confirm the exact setup rather than guess from the year alone.

Everything here applies whether you drive in from Westwood or need us to come to you. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

2007 to 2010: transponder keys on the early first generation

The earliest Edges use a Texas 4D63 transponder key. These are the 40-bit-era vehicles, and good aftermarket chips that work in both 40-bit and 80-bit modes cover them. There is no remote built into the key head on these years. The key is a metal blade with a plastic head holding the chip, and it works with Ford's PATS immobilizer, the passive anti-theft system that decides whether the engine is allowed to run.

If you have a 2007 to 2010 Edge, the most common reason you call is one of two things. Either you lost the only key, or you had a copy made at a hardware store and found it opens the doors but will not start the car. That second case is easy to explain: a plain cut key turns the lock, but without a programmed chip PATS never sees a valid key, so the engine cranks and will not fire. A key with a chip that is cut correctly but not programmed does the same thing.

Programming on these years is done through the OBD port and does not require dealer credentials. The data also shows that a duplicate is possible when you have an original key, and that an all-keys-lost situation is possible too. We confirm the details by VIN when you call. These Edges also carry a mechanical backup key, which matters when we need to get into the car before we start the programming.

2011 to 2014: remote-head keys with 80-bit chips

The 2011 refresh brought the remote-head key: the lock, unlock, and panic buttons are built into the key head, and the chip is an 80-bit Texas 4D63. The data we rely on lists these keys as fitting Edges from 2011 through 2015. Ford also offered Intelligent Access, a smart fob with push-button start, as an option on upper trims starting with the 2011 refresh. We have not verified which trims got it, so if your Edge has a start button, tell us on the phone and we will confirm the fob type from the VIN before we order anything.

For a standard remote-head Edge, the job is two parts: cutting the blade and programming both the chip and the remote functions. Programming runs through the OBD port. As with the earlier years, a duplicate needs an original key, and an all-keys-lost job is possible.

The wear pattern on this era is different from the one before it. Owners here are usually dealing with a cracked key shell, buttons worn flat, or a dead battery in the key. Those are not always a reason to replace the whole key. Sometimes the shell and battery are the whole problem, and we will tell you if that is the case rather than sell you a new key.

2015 to 2018: flip keys and an honest word about the chip

The second generation arrived for 2015 with a bladed flip key on most trims, a design in the N5F-A08TAA family. It is the same key family used on the 2013 to 2016 Fusion. Some upper trims came with a smart proximity fob and push-button start instead. We do not assume which one you have from the year; we look at the car.

Here is where we will be straight with you: the chip in these keys is a genuine point of disagreement among suppliers. Strattec and CLK material says the chip is a Texas 4D63 80-bit. UHS aftermarket listings say 128-bit. We cannot call that settled, so we do not pretend to know it from a year-and-model lookup. Our practice is to read the existing key, or test the chip, before we cut and before we order a replacement. If you have lost every key, we confirm by VIN and by testing in person.

The blade on these keys is a high-security, side-milled design, which cannot be duplicated on a basic hardware-store machine. It needs a specialty cutting machine. Programming is done through the OBD port, and both duplicates and all-keys-lost jobs are listed as possible for these years.

2019 to 2024: smart proximity fobs, and where dealer-only enters the picture

We believe the 2019 refresh made push-button start with a smart proximity fob standard on the Edge. We have not verified that, and we have not verified the chip family, which appears to be a 128-bit Hitag Pro type. So on any 2019 or newer Edge we confirm the exact setup by VIN before we promise anything.

For 2019 and 2020, programming is listed as an OBD job and an all-keys-lost job is possible, though proximity systems can require an active-alarm adapter when no working key remains. That is extra equipment and extra steps, and it is one of the reasons a lost fob is a bigger job than a lost older bladed key.

For 2021 through 2024 the picture is less certain, and we would rather say so than gloss over it. Ford's own tools (FDRS and FJDS) used with a non-dealer login require NASTF VSP credentials, or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request, to perform PATS functions. Aftermarket tool coverage for these years varies. We do not have a verified programming method or a verified all-keys-lost answer for these years. Our practice is to confirm current coverage on your VIN before we quote, and to say so plainly if your job turns out to be dealer-only or requires VSP access. If the dealer is the right place for your Edge, we will tell you that.

Duplicate or all keys lost: what changes by era

For every model year in the data, a duplicate needs an original key. That is the lighter-cost route in most cases, so if you still have one working key, do not wait until it breaks or goes missing. Copying from a key you hold is simpler than rebuilding access from nothing.

All keys lost is a different job. For 2007 through 2020 the data lists it as possible, and the work is done through the OBD port. For 2021 through 2024 the answer is unconfirmed, and we check current coverage for your VIN first. If you have lost every key, here is what to expect by era:

  • 2007 to 2010: the key is cut to the lock, a new 4D63 chip is programmed, and the old key is removed from the vehicle's memory if you want it gone.
  • 2011 to 2014: same process, plus the remote functions on the key head.
  • 2015 to 2018: we test the chip rather than rely on a catalog entry, then cut the side-milled blade on the specialty machine and program the key.
  • 2019 to 2020: smart fob work; an active-alarm adapter may be needed with no working key.
  • 2021 to 2024: we confirm coverage by VIN first and tell you if the job is dealer-only or needs VSP access.

How we handle an Edge key job, step by step

The process is the same in outline whether we meet you at home, at work, or at the shop on Wilshire. The details change with the era.

Because we are one company with a storefront and mobile vans, the person who answers the phone is part of the same operation that does the work. David oversees the work, and nobody hands your job to a dispatch middleman.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, the trim if you know it, and whether the car has a start button or a key slot. If you can read the VIN from the dash or the door jamb, we use it.
  2. We ask what you still have: an original key, a damaged key, or nothing. That decides whether this is a duplicate or an all-keys-lost job.
  3. We confirm the key type and chip for your exact vehicle. On 2015 to 2018 Edges we read or test the chip rather than rely on a listing, and on 2019 and newer we confirm by VIN.
  4. We tell you before we start if the job looks dealer-only or needs special access, instead of finding out halfway through.
  5. We cut the blade, program the key through the OBD port where that applies, and test everything: door locks, remote buttons, and starting the engine.
  6. If you want old, lost keys removed from the vehicle's memory, say so and we will do that as part of the programming.

What affects the price of an Edge key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car and your situation. These are the factors that move the cost up or down:

  • Key type. A plain transponder key costs less to make than a remote-head key, and a smart proximity fob typically costs more than either.
  • Duplicate or all keys lost. Copying from an original is usually the more economical route. Starting from nothing takes more time and sometimes more equipment.
  • Active-alarm adapters or special access. Proximity all-keys-lost work can require extra hardware, and the 2021 to 2024 years may require VSP credentials or dealer involvement.
  • Blade cutting. Side-milled high-security blades on the 2015 to 2018 flip keys need a specialty machine, which adds to the work compared with a standard blade.
  • Whether the key can be saved. A cracked shell or a dead battery can be a repair, not a replacement.
  • Where you are. Mobile service to your location is a different job from coming to the shop.
  • How many keys you want made. A second key made during the same visit is generally more economical than a separate trip later.

Common Edge key problems

The problems cluster by era, and the data lists them clearly, so you can often tell what is wrong before you call.

  • 2007 to 2010: worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage vehicles, where the key sticks or will not turn; worn 8-cut key blades that stop turning the locks; the PATS theft light flashing when the chip is not read; and hardware-store copies that open the doors but will not start the engine.
  • 2011 to 2014: cracked remote-head shells, worn buttons, key or remote battery failure, a flashing PATS light, and worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars.
  • 2015 to 2018: broken flip-key hinges, worn shells, fob battery failure, a flashing PATS light, and side-milled blades that need a specialty machine to duplicate.
  • 2019 to 2024: dead smart-fob batteries that bring up 'No key detected' even though the hidden emergency blade still opens the door; the fact that a lost fob costs more to replace than an older bladed key; and water-damaged or crushed fobs.
  • When the engine cranks but will not start and the theft light flashes, the car is not reading a valid chip. That points to the key, not the engine.

When to call us and when the dealer makes sense

Call us if you have lost your Edge key, broken it, or want a spare made before you lose the only one. Our line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. We have been in business since 1987, and David oversees the work. You can also use the contact page to reach us, or read more about our car key services and what we cover for Ford vehicles. Our home page has the general picture of what we do.

The dealer can make sense in a narrow set of cases, mostly the 2021 to 2024 Edges, where non-dealer programming access can be limited. We will tell you if we find your job falls there. We would rather say that on the phone than leave you waiting on a job we cannot do.

One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you call for it. That applies to us and to everyone else in the trade.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Ford Edge key if I lost all of them?

For 2007 through 2020 Edges, all keys lost is possible and is done through the OBD port. For 2021 through 2024 we confirm current tool coverage on your VIN before quoting, and we say plainly if the job is dealer-only or needs NASTF VSP access.

Do I need my original key to get a duplicate?

Yes. For every Edge model year in our data, a duplicate needs an original key. If you still have one, copying it is generally the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job.

Why does my Edge crank but not start with a copied key?

The key probably turns the locks but carries no programmed chip, so the PATS immobilizer never sees a valid key. A flashing theft light usually confirms it. The key needs a correct chip and programming, not just a cut blade.

What chip does the 2015 to 2018 Edge key use?

Suppliers disagree. Strattec and CLK material says Texas 4D63 80-bit, while UHS aftermarket listings say 128-bit. We do not guess. We read the existing key or test the chip before cutting, and confirm by VIN.

Does my 2019 or newer Edge have push-button start?

We believe the 2019 refresh made push-button start with a smart proximity fob standard, but we have not verified that. Give us the VIN and we will confirm the exact fob type and chip before ordering anything.

My smart fob says 'No key detected.' Is the car broken?

Often it is just a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade in the fob should still open the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob may be damaged or water-affected, and we can look at it.

Will a 2021 to 2024 Edge need the dealer?

Possibly. Ford's PATS functions through its own tools with a non-dealer login need NASTF VSP credentials or an OEM-assisted request, and aftermarket coverage varies. We check coverage first and tell you honestly if it is dealer-only.

Can you come to me, or do I have to bring the car in?

We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation.

Is a cracked key shell a reason to replace the whole key?

Not always. On the remote-head and flip-key years, a cracked shell, worn buttons, or a dead battery may be a repair. We will tell you if the key can be saved before suggesting a replacement.

We cover all these cities
