What do Hyundai owners in Sherman Oaks usually need?

Most Hyundai key calls from Sherman Oaks fall into a few groups: a key that is lost, a spare nobody has made yet, a fob that quit working, or an ignition that was damaged when someone tried to steal the car. Which group you are in matters a great deal, because Hyundai's key history is unusually split by trim. Two Hyundais of the same model and year can need completely different work.

Where the problem happens is local. Sherman Oaks has a lot of condo and apartment stock along Ventura, Sepulveda, and Riverside, including many HOA-managed buildings from the 1960s-80s. Cars in those buildings live in shared parking and assigned spaces, so a key lost between the car and the front door, or a fob that dies when you are already home, is an ordinary evening call. Around the Galleria and Fashion Square, where people park for work and errands, the typical story is reaching the car and realizing the key is not in your pocket. In the hillsides south of Ventura, cars sit in driveways and behind gates, and key trouble often comes with a move-in or a sale, when you want every old key accounted for.

If you are not sure whether you need a key, a fob, or an ignition repair, call and describe what the car does. We will sort it out before we drive over.

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

We run mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, about 8 miles from Sherman Oaks. The work happens where your car is parked, whether that is a curb on Magnolia, a condo space off Riverside, or a hillside driveway. You do not need to tow the car anywhere.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. It is answered around the clock, every day of the year. Tell us the model, year, trim, and whether the car uses a turn key or a push-button start.
  2. We ask a few questions about the key situation: all keys lost, one key left, a fob that stopped working, or a damaged ignition. We also confirm that you can show ID and registration tying you to the car.
  3. A technician drives to your location in a van carrying cutting and programming equipment.
  4. On site, we work out what your particular car has. That means checking whether it has an immobilizer at all and, if it does, identifying the chip, usually by the fob part number or the VIN.
  5. We cut the blade if one is needed, then program the key or fob through the OBD-II port using professional tools.
  6. We test everything before we leave: starting the car, locking and unlocking, the remote buttons, and the spare key if you ordered one.

Which Hyundai key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Hyundai did not move from plain keys to chip keys to smart keys in one clean line. When a chip is present, the progression looks like this:

  • Late 1990s to early 2000s: a few cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60 chip.
  • 2000s to early 2010s: Philips ID46 chips were the standard where a chip was fitted.
  • Mid to late 2010s: DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES chip listed on some models.
  • Newest generations: NXP Hitag-AES smart keys. By model, that is Elantra from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025.

Why the chip type is not always obvious

Parts sellers label the newest NXP chips inconsistently. Most models get a '4A' label, but the 2021 and newer Elantra is sold under both '4A' and '6A'. Because of that, we do not trust a listing or a guess. We confirm the chip by the fob part number before we order or program anything.

The bigger point is that a model and year do not tell you whether there is a chip at all. A very large share of 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even Palisade 2020-2021. That missing hardware is the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave, and it is why chip identity gets verified per vehicle, not assumed from the model name.

Why a hardware-store copy works on some Hyundais and not others

If your Hyundai is a base trim with no immobilizer, any properly cut metal key will start it. No programming is involved. That is why some owners get a cheap copy that works fine and then are surprised when a friend's Hyundai refuses the same kind of copy.

On a chip-equipped trim, a plain metal copy will turn in the ignition but will not start the car, because the car is waiting for a chip it recognizes. Trim and build date decide which situation you are in, not the model year alone. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.

We will tell you straight which case your car is. If it has no immobilizer, we will not sell you programming you do not need. We will cut a proper key, and if the ignition has been damaged we can talk about that repair separately.

What if I have lost every Hyundai key?

All-keys-lost sounds worse than it usually is. On immobilizer-equipped Hyundais, programming runs through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and on most 2006-2019 models the tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN. That makes add-a-key and all-keys-lost routine locksmith jobs, with no dealer involved.

The newest cars are where we are careful. On the Hitag-AES '4A' generations, roughly 2023 and newer depending on model, aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost done with an Autel IM-series tool and an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage for your specific car and tell you plainly if it is a dealer-only case before you commit to anything.

How much does Hyundai key replacement cost in Sherman Oaks?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car in front of us. Here is what moves the cost up or down:

  • Whether the car has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer base trim needs only a cut key, which is usually the more economical route.
  • The key type: a plain metal key, a chip key, a flip key, or a push-button smart fob.
  • The chip generation and how well tools cover it. Newer Hitag-AES cars can need more equipment and more verification.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car you can still start is generally simpler than an all-keys-lost job.
  • Whether the ignition or steering column was damaged in a theft attempt, which turns a key job into a repair job.
  • Time of day and your location. Late-night mobile calls cost more to run than daytime ones, and we will say so up front.

A fair comparison of the Hyundai dealer and a locksmith

The dealer is the right call in some cases. If your car is one of the newest generations where aftermarket tool coverage is thin, the dealer or a NASTF-credentialed service may be the only path, and we will tell you that rather than attempt it and waste your time. The dealer also handles the anti-theft software update on the trims Hyundai listed, which is separate from key work.

For most Hyundais, a locksmith is the more practical route. We come to you, so you are not arranging a tow or a ride to a service department. We can usually do add-a-key and all-keys-lost on immobilizer cars without dealer involvement, and on no-immobilizer trims we cut a key and you are done. If your car turns out to need the dealer, you will hear it from us at the start.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Hyundai

We have been in business since 1987, and we are one company with a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus our own mobile vans. There is no dispatch middleman reselling your call to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it, including us, before they start. A real company will not mind the question. We cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and Hyundai keys in Sherman Oaks are a regular part of that. For a wider view, see our pages on Hyundai keys and car keys in general.

Hyundai key service around Sherman Oaks neighborhoods and ZIP codes

We work across Sherman Oaks, including ZIP codes 91403, 91423, 91401, and 91411. In the flats north of Ventura Boulevard, where the 1930s-50s ranch and traditional homes are, most Hyundai calls are driveway or street-parking jobs: a lost key, a spare to make, or a fob that stopped responding. Along the Ventura Boulevard, Magnolia Boulevard, and Riverside Drive corridors, the condo and apartment buildings mean shared parking, and we are used to working in those spaces and with building rules.

In Longridge Estates, Royal Woods, and Chandler Estates, and on the hillsides toward Mulholland, properties often have gates, side-yard doors, and multiple entry points. A car key problem there often arrives alongside a gate or lock question, especially after a sale or move-in. We can handle the car and talk through the house. Valley summer heat is hard on plastic fobs and dashboards, and hillside homes get extra sun and wind exposure, so a worn key or fob case is worth replacing before it fails.

Near the Galleria and Fashion Square, a lot of Hyundai calls come from people who parked for work or errands and then found the key missing or the fob dead. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Hyundai key if I have no original key?

Usually yes. On immobilizer-equipped Hyundais, the tool can often read or calculate the PIN, especially on most 2006-2019 models. On a no-immobilizer base trim, we simply cut a key. On the newest generations, we confirm tool coverage for your exact car first and tell you if it needs the dealer.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Hyundai?

It depends on the trim and build date. On no-immobilizer trims, a properly cut metal copy starts the car. On chip-equipped trims, a plain copy will not start it. We check which one you have before cutting anything.

My Hyundai says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the emergency blade will still open the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be failing, and low-quality cloned or aftermarket fobs can fail intermittently.

Can you program the newest Hyundais, 2023 and later?

Often, but not always. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented on some Hitag-AES cars, including a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost job. Tool coverage is still maturing and varies by model, so we confirm each job. Some cases need the dealer or NASTF-credentialed service.

Does my Hyundai even have an immobilizer?

Many 2011-2022 base turn-key trims do not. Hyundai's own anti-theft update list covers several models across those years. Immobilizers became standard on vehicles built after November 1, 2021. We can usually tell on site, and a VIN lookup confirms it.

My Hyundai's ignition was damaged in a theft attempt. Is that a key job?

It can be both. A damaged ignition cylinder or steering column needs repair before any key works properly. Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update on listed trims, which is a separate dealer matter. We can repair the ignition and make the key.

Will you come to my condo parking or hillside driveway?

Yes. Our vans work where the car is, including shared condo parking along Ventura, Sepulveda, and Riverside and hillside driveways. If a gate or building rule affects access, tell us when you call.

Are you licensed for Hyundai key work?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work begins, including us. You can check a license with BSIS. To start the conversation, call (213) 577-1366 or use our contact page.
