What do Ford owners in Sherman Oaks usually need?
Most Ford calls from Sherman Oaks fall into a handful of patterns: a key that was lost, a key that finally broke, a spare that was never made, or a cheap copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine. That last one catches people off guard. A key cut without a transponder chip can turn the lock and still leave the engine dead, because Ford's PATS immobilizer never reads a chip.
Where these problems show up is shaped by how people live here. Sherman Oaks has a lot of condo and apartment stock along Ventura, Sepulveda and Riverside, including many HOA-managed buildings from the 1960s to the 1980s. If you live in one, your Ford is probably parked in a shared space, and a dead fob or snapped key means the problem is sitting in the building's parking area, with the building's rules around it. Others get stuck while out: along the Ventura Boulevard corridor, near Westfield Fashion Square, or around the Sherman Oaks Galleria, when a worn key finally quits or a fob battery gives up and the dash says no key is detected.
Hillside owners have their own version. Homes south of Ventura, up toward the Mulholland corridor, often have gates, side-yard doors and several entry points, so a spare key can end up somewhere that is awkward to reach. When the only working key is the one that just broke, that spare matters a great deal.
- Worn ignition lock wafers, where the key sticks or stops turning on a high-mileage truck or car
- Worn 8-cut key blades that no longer lift the wafers properly
- A flashing PATS theft light: the engine cranks but will not start because the chip is not being read
- Hardware-store copies that open the doors but will not start the engine
- Broken flip-key hinges, cracked remote-head shells and worn buttons
- Dead smart-fob batteries showing 'No key detected'
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail on and off
How does mobile Ford key service work at the curb?
We run mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Sherman Oaks is about 8 miles from that base. The work happens where the Ford sits: a driveway, a condo space, a curb on Magnolia or Riverside, a spot near the Galleria. You do not need to tow the car to anyone.
Here is how a typical visit goes. The details change by model and year, but the sequence is steady.
- Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. A person answers, and it is the same company that sends the van, with no dispatch middleman in between.
- Tell us the make, model, year and what happened: lost, broken, or you want a spare. If you can read the VIN through the windshield, that helps a lot.
- We confirm the key type for your exact vehicle, because Ford changed chips and key styles several times and the changeover years vary by model.
- At the car, we verify you are the owner or have the owner's authority, using your ID and registration or other proof that matches the vehicle.
- We cut the blade if your key has one, using the vehicle's key code or by working from the lock itself if needed.
- We program the key to the car, usually through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and test it: doors, remote buttons, start, and shutdown.
- If you want, we also make a second key while we are there, since a spare is far easier to make than a replacement after everything is gone.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Ford key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Ford's key technology changed in stages, and knowing the stage tells us what the job involves. This is the general picture. Exact changeover years vary by model, and we check them by vehicle rather than guess.
SecuriLock, also called PATS, rolled out across the lineup from 1996 to 1999 using a fixed-code Texas 4C chip. Through the mid-2000s most models moved to the Texas 4D63 crypto chip, a 40-bit system. An 80-bit version of the 4D63 phased in around 2011 to 2013 depending on the model, and the Expedition is often listed as holding out until its 2015 refresh. Bladed keys on newer platforms use a 128-bit NXP Hitag Pro chip from roughly 2013 to 2015 on. We can point to the 2015-2020 F-150 and the 2019 and newer Ranger as confirmed examples.
Smart proximity fobs with push-button start spread trim by trim through the 2010s, and they are standard on most 2018 and newer redesigns. If your Ford starts with a button and the key stays in your pocket, you are in this group.
- Focus: the US Focus used the Texas 4D60 chip in 2000-2004, which is different from most other Fords of that time.
- Escape: the 2013-2019 Escape kept 80-bit bladed keys and did not move to the 128-bit chip.
- Ranger: PATS arrived late. Most trucks before 1999 have no transponder, and neither do 2.5L four-cylinders through 2001. After that, Rangers use 4C and 4D63-family keys like other Fords.
- Mixed-year households: two Fords from the same family can need quite different keys, so never assume one key type fits both.
What if you have lost every Ford key?
All keys lost is the situation people dread, and it is more routine than most expect. On the bladed-key Fords of the 2000s and 2010s, an all-keys-lost job through the OBD-II port is routine work for us. The PATS system includes a timed security-access wait during programming, so the job is not instant, but it is steady and predictable.
Newer proximity-fob Fords are where it gets more specific. On roughly 2016 and newer fob models, all keys lost can require an 'active alarm' bypass adapter alongside the programmer. Vendor kits list coverage for 2016 through 2020. We confirm what your particular vehicle needs before we promise anything.
The newest Fords, roughly 2021 and later, are the honest exception. Ford's FDRS/FJDS software path requires NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) credentials, or an OEM-assisted immobilizer request, for PATS functions through non-dealer logins. That comes from NASTF's own service guidance. Aftermarket tool coverage for these models varies. If your Ford falls in that group and the job may be dealer-or-VSP-only, we tell you so on the phone instead of sending a van that cannot finish. Our lost car key replacement page for Sherman Oaks covers the general process if you are not sure which situation you are in.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Ford key in Sherman Oaks?
We do not quote a figure before we know what you are driving, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Ford key pricing moves with a few real variables, and here they are.
Key type is the biggest one. A basic transponder key with a blade costs less to make than a flip key with remote buttons, and both usually cost less than a proximity smart fob. Chip generation matters too, since the 128-bit Hitag Pro keys involve different parts and procedures than the older 4C and 4D63 keys.
- Whether you have any working key: adding a spare from a working key is typically the lighter-cost job, while all keys lost involves more steps.
- Model year: newer proximity-fob Fords may need a bypass adapter for all-keys-lost, and the newest models may be dealer-or-VSP-only.
- Blade work: cutting an 8-cut blade, or repairing a worn ignition that will not accept a fresh key, adds labor.
- Condition of the car: a worn ignition lock, damaged wiring at the port, or a low vehicle battery can add time.
- Time of day and location: after-hours calls and hard-to-reach spots can affect the total.
- Quantity: making two keys in one visit is usually the more economical route than making one now and one later.
Dealer or locksmith for a Ford key: a fair comparison
A Ford dealer is a legitimate choice, and sometimes the only one. If your vehicle is a recent model where the immobilizer functions are restricted, the dealer may be the right call. Dealers also have access to factory key data and can order parts for unusual configurations.
The tradeoff is logistics. With a dealer, a car that cannot start usually has to be towed there or the work has to be scheduled, and keys may need to be ordered. A mobile locksmith can make the key where the car already is, and for most 2000s and 2010s Fords the work can be done at the curb, including all-keys-lost. That is where we tend to be the more practical route.
Whoever you choose, ask for their California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and any honest company will give it to you when asked. Also be wary of any caller who quotes a price without asking what you drive. Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Ford?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. That long run means we have seen how Ford's key systems changed from fixed-code chips to crypto chips to proximity fobs, and we have worked on each stage.
We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood as well as mobile vans, so we are not a call center that hands your job to whoever answers a lead. The company that picks up the phone at (213) 577-1366 is the one that sends the van. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, which matters when a key fails at night or on a holiday.

Call (213) 577-1366Ford key service around Sherman Oaks neighborhoods and ZIP codes
We cover Sherman Oaks across 91403, 91423, 91401 and 91411. In the flats north of Ventura Boulevard, where the housing is mostly 1930s-50s ranch and traditional homes, the usual call is a driveway or street-side Ford with a lost or worn key. Chandler Estates is known locally for remodeled ranch homes, and owners there often want a spare made at the same time as other home upgrades.
Up in the hills, the Longridge Estates, Royal Woods and the Mulholland corridor south of Ventura have gated and multi-entry properties. If a Ford key is lost and the house gate also needs attention, we can look at both while we are on the property. If you are buying or moving into a hillside home, our Sherman Oaks locksmith page covers home rekeying and gate work alongside car keys.
Along the Ventura Boulevard, Magnolia Boulevard and Riverside Drive corridors, the condo and apartment buildings often have HOA rules about parking and vendor access. If you call us from one, tell us the building name and any gate or guest-parking instructions so the van can get to the car without delay. Around the Galleria district and the Fashion Square area, we can meet you wherever you parked.
If you are locked out rather than keyless, see car lockout service in Sherman Oaks. If the key works but the fob is damaged, our key fob replacement page is the better fit. The full overview is at car key replacement in Sherman Oaks.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Ford key in Sherman Oaks without towing my car?
In most cases, yes. Our vans come to the car and cut and program the key on site. The main exception is the newest Fords, roughly 2021 and later, where PATS functions can require NASTF VSP credentials or an OEM-assisted request, and those jobs may be dealer-or-VSP-only. We tell you that on the phone.
My Ford key opens the doors but will not start the engine. Why?
That usually means the key has no working transponder chip, or the chip was never programmed to the car. Hardware-store copies are a common cause. The PATS theft light may flash when you turn the key, and the engine may crank without starting. A properly programmed key fixes it.
Can you program a Ford key if I lost every key?
For most bladed-key Fords of the 2000s and 2010s, all-keys-lost through the OBD-II port is routine. On roughly 2016 and newer proximity-fob models, a bypass adapter may be needed. On the newest models we confirm whether the job is possible for us before sending a van.
Do I need to bring my own key if I want a spare?
It helps. Many bladed-key Fords allow owner onboard programming of an additional key when two working programmed keys are available, but we verify that for your generation because trim and model-year exceptions exist. With only one working key, we can usually program through the OBD-II port.
Is the 2013-2019 Escape key the same as other Fords from those years?
Not necessarily. The 2013-2019 Escape kept 80-bit bladed keys and did not move to the 128-bit chip that many other Ford platforms adopted around that time. This is why we confirm the exact vehicle before cutting or ordering anything.
My Ford says 'No key detected' even with the fob in my hand. Is the key broken?
Often it is just a dead fob battery, which is an easy fix. If a new battery does not help, the fob itself may be damaged or the key may need reprogramming. Our key fob replacement service can sort out which.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
Ask for their California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and a legitimate company will give it to you. Be careful of anyone who quotes a price without asking your make, model and year.
What information should I have ready when I call?
Your Ford's make, model and year, your location in Sherman Oaks, and whether you have any working key. The VIN, visible through the windshield, helps us confirm the key type. Have your ID and proof of ownership ready for the visit. Call (213) 577-1366 any time.
