BMW key replacement in Pomona

Wilshire Lock & Key replaces and programs BMW keys in Pomona with mobile service, answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. How far we can go depends on your BMW's key generation: older cars are routine, many F-chassis cars are specialist work, and the newest models are dealer-only. Call (213) 577-1366.

What do BMW owners in Pomona usually need?

Most BMW calls fall into a few buckets: a key that's lost, a fob that quit working, a spare wanted before the only key disappears, or a car locked with the key inside. Where the car lives in Pomona explains a lot of it.

Apartment buildings line the Holt and Garey corridors, and there's apartment living near Western University of Health Sciences downtown. Cars sit on the street or in shared lots, keys get passed between roommates and partners, and one fob in a coat pocket is easy to lose. Student housing near Cal Poly Pomona is the same story with people moving in and out. A key that has passed through several hands is a good reason to program a fresh one rather than trust an unknown spare.

Event days at Fairplex are the other pattern: a long walk back to the car, a key left on the seat, or a fob that won't register. That's a lockout first, and a car lockout call in Pomona is a different job from a key replacement. We sort out which one you have on the phone.

On a BMW, the first question is always the same: which key generation is the car? Everything else follows from that.

How does mobile BMW key service work at the curb?

Most BMW key jobs we take don't involve towing the car anywhere. Our mobile vans come to wherever it's parked: an apartment lot, a curb, a driveway, a fairground space. Pomona is about 43 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, so we'll be straight on the phone about what the trip involves rather than reciting a promise we can't keep.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. It's answered at any hour. Tell us the model, year, and whether you have any working key.
  2. We identify the key system from the model and year and tell you plainly whether it's a curbside job, a specialist module job, or dealer-only, before anyone drives out.
  3. On arrival we ask for ID and ownership paperwork that matches the car, and we confirm the VIN in person.
  4. We check the key system and the condition of any key you still have, and we confirm which generation the car actually uses.
  5. We prepare the key, program it to the car, and test every function: starting, locking, unlocking, and the emergency blade where there is one.
  6. We hand over every key and explain what we did, so you aren't guessing later.

Which BMW key generation does your car use?

BMW key systems fall into clear eras, and yours decides what the key looks like, how it's programmed, and whether a locksmith can do it at all.

  • EWS era (through the mid-2000s, and through 2010 on the E83 X3): the EWS immobilizer with an ID44 (PCF7935) remote-head 'diamond' key.
  • CAS era (from the 2002 E65 7-series, then the 2004 E60 5-series, 2006 E90 3-series, 2007 E70 X5 and 2013-2015 E84 X1): an ID46 (PCF7945/Hitag2) fob that inserts into a dash slot, with a Start button. The CAS module runs from CAS1 through CAS3+.
  • F-chassis era (F01 7-series 2009, F10 5-series 2011, F25 X3 2011, F30 3-series 2012, F15 X5 2014, F48 X1 2016): true keyless smart fobs on the ID49 (PCF7953P, Hitag Pro) chip. The F01, F10 and F25 use CAS4/CAS4+ modules; the F30, F15 and F48 use FEM/BDC body modules.
  • G-chassis era (from the 2016 G11 7-series): a BDC2 body controller and an N5F-ID21A-family 434 MHz fob.
  • Newest generations (G70 7-series 2023, U11 X1 2023, G60 5-series 2024, G45 X3 2025): Digital Key architectures with no established aftermarket path yet.

What can be done for each BMW era?

Model year alone can mislead. The E83 X3 stays on the older system until 2010, and each era spans different years by model. When a car sits near a boundary, we confirm by VIN and in person before saying what's possible. Here's the honest picture:

  • EWS cars: routine specialist work. Keys are originated from the EWS module data on the bench, all-keys-lost included.
  • CAS1 to CAS3+ cars: documented OBD add-a-key and all-keys-lost procedures exist. Late CAS3+ firmware can need a flash downgrade, which is extra work, and we'll tell you if yours does.
  • CAS4/CAS4+ and FEM/BDC F-chassis cars (2009-2022 depending on model): advanced specialist jobs. Some tools work through OBD, others need bench module work. Possible, but only with dedicated BMW equipment.
  • G-chassis BDC2 cars (2016 onward): add-a-key is specialist-possible when you have a working key. All-keys-lost is effectively dealer-only.
  • G70, U11, G60 and G45: dealer-only for key work, period.

What if you've lost every BMW key?

All keys lost is where BMW differs most from other makes, so it's where we're most careful about what we promise. On EWS and CAS cars, a lost-key job is something a specialist can solve. On F-chassis cars it's advanced work, and we'll tell you on the call whether your car is one we can do.

On a G-chassis car, we won't promise all-keys-lost. There is one advertised aftermarket route, but it locks the car against future dealer keys. We don't use it. If your G-series BMW has no working key, the realistic path is the dealer, and we'd rather say that at the start than after you've waited for us.

Dealer paths require proof of ownership, and BMW doesn't use the NASTF SDRM process the way domestic makes do, so have your registration and ID ready. For more on lost-key situations, see lost car key replacement in Pomona.

If you still have one working key, a spare now is almost always the more economical route compared with a lost-key job later.

Is it really the key? Problems that look like key failure

A lot of BMW 'key problems' aren't new-key problems. Before programming anything, we look at these:

  • Dead rechargeable key batteries on 2000s EWS and slot-key cars. The remote dies but the chip still starts the car.
  • Electronic steering-lock (ELV) failures on E-series slot-key cars, misdiagnosed as key problems.
  • Worn dash key slots and fobs that no longer hold a charge.
  • Dead smart-fob coin cells on F/G-chassis cars: 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Cracked key shells, broken flip hinges (E83) and worn buttons.
  • Comfort Access door-handle sensor faults blamed on the key.

What affects the cost of a BMW key in Pomona?

We don't quote numbers on a web page because a BMW key price depends on facts we don't have until we know your car. These are the real drivers:

  • The key generation and module. An EWS key and an F-chassis smart fob are very different jobs.
  • Whether you have a working key. Add-a-key is a lighter job than all-keys-lost on every era.
  • The key itself: a new fob, a replacement shell, or only a battery.
  • Extra work, such as a flash downgrade on late CAS3+ cars or bench module work on some F-chassis cars.
  • Time of day and distance, since we're driving out from Westwood.
  • Whether a lockout is part of the call.

Dealer or locksmith: which is the fair choice?

Sometimes the dealer is simply the right answer. For the G70, U11, G60 and G45, it's the only one. For G-chassis all-keys-lost it's effectively the only safe one. If we can't do your car, we'll say so.

For EWS, CAS and many F-chassis cars, a specialist locksmith can do the work, and we come to you. That matters when the car is stuck at a Pomona apartment lot or you can't drive it. You skip the tow and the wait for a service appointment. Ask any shop what a quote includes, and compare like with like. For the broader picture, see our BMW key pages.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We've been in business since 1987, with a storefront on Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans. You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman who hands your call to someone you've never heard of. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work starts. You can read more about car key replacement in Pomona.

Where in Pomona do we help BMW owners?

We work across the city, in ZIP codes 91766, 91767 and 91768. That includes Downtown Pomona and the Arts Colony, the Lincoln Park, Wilton Heights and Hacienda Park historic districts, Ganesha Hills, Phillips Ranch, Westmont, Spadra near Cal Poly Pomona, North and South Pomona, and the Garey Avenue corridor.

Hot, dry summers and Santa Ana winds are part of life here, and wood doors and frames expand and stick during prolonged heat. If a stuck door is also on your list, see our Pomona locksmith services. To ask about your BMW, use the contact page or call (213) 577-1366.

Frequently asked questions

Can you program a BMW key on the spot in Pomona?

On many cars, yes. EWS and CAS cars have established procedures, and many F-chassis cars are possible with dedicated equipment. G-chassis add-a-key needs a working key. The newest generations are dealer-only. We confirm by VIN before we come out.

Do you handle 2023 and newer BMWs?

Not for key work. The G70, U11, G60 and G45 use Digital Key architectures with no established aftermarket path yet, so the dealer is the route. We'll tell you that on the phone.

Can you do all-keys-lost on a G-series BMW?

We won't promise it. The one advertised aftermarket route locks the car against future dealer keys, so we don't use it. Effectively, all-keys-lost on a G-chassis car is dealer territory.

My BMW says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?

Often not. On F and G-chassis cars a dead coin cell in the smart fob causes this, and the emergency blade still opens the door. A Comfort Access door-handle sensor fault can also be blamed on the key. We check before replacing anything.

What do I need to show you?

ID and ownership paperwork that matches the car, and access to the VIN. Dealer routes require proof of ownership as well, so it's worth having it ready either way.

Why do you ask for the VIN?

Model year alone doesn't always tell us which key system the car has. The E83 X3, for example, uses the older EWS system through 2010. The VIN lets us confirm the generation instead of guessing.

I'm locked out at Fairplex with the key inside. Is that a key replacement?

No, that's a lockout, and it's a different and lighter job than replacing a key. See our Pomona car lockout page, or call and we'll sort it out.

Do you answer at night and on weekends?

Yes. (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Distance from our Westwood base and the time of day both affect how a job is quoted, and we'll explain how.
