What do Hyundai owners in Paramount usually need?

Most Hyundai calls we get from Paramount fall into a handful of situations: someone down to a single key and wanting a spare, a key that is gone entirely, a smart fob that stopped working, a locked-out car, or an ignition that was damaged in a theft attempt. Some people also call after a hardware-store copy refused to start the car, and that one confuses a lot of owners.

Paramount was formed in 1948 from the dairy towns of Hynes and Clearwater, and the housing reflects it: mostly small 1940s and 1950s single-family homes, a high share of renters, numerous 1960s to 1980s apartment complexes, and several mobile home parks. For many Hyundai owners here, the car sits right where they live. That means lockouts and lost keys tend to happen in an apartment complex lot, at a curb outside a postwar house, or inside a mobile home park, not in some far-off parking structure. Because we come to the car, the location mostly does not matter.

  • Spare or replacement keys for chip-equipped Hyundais, including add-a-key when you still have a working key
  • All-keys-lost situations where no working key is left
  • Smart-fob problems, including a dead battery that triggers a 'key not detected' message
  • Ignition lock cylinders and steering columns damaged in theft attempts
  • Worn ignition or door-lock wafers on high-mileage cars
  • Failed cloned or low-quality aftermarket chips and fobs that work only some of the time

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

You do not need to tow the car or find a ride to a shop. Our mobile vans carry cutting and programming equipment, and the work happens next to your Hyundai. Here is how a typical call goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366, which is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and tell us the model, the year, and whether the car has a turn-key ignition or push-button start.
  2. We ask a few questions that decide the job: do you have any working key, is the car locked, and is the trim a base model or a higher one. Trim and build date matter on Hyundais, as explained below.
  3. We confirm what the car needs, which can include checking the fob part number or VIN, before anything is cut or programmed.
  4. At the car, we get you inside if needed, then cut the key or prepare the fob to match your vehicle.
  5. For chip-equipped cars, we program through the OBD-II port with professional tools and test that the key starts the car and that the remote functions work.
  6. You leave with working keys, and we tell you plainly if anything about your particular car is worth fixing later, such as a worn ignition.

What kinds of Hyundai keys are we dealing with?

Hyundai's US key history is split by trim, so the model name alone does not tell us what is in your hand. When a chip is present, the technology progressed in stages. Some late-1990s and early-2000s cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60 chip. Through the 2000s and early 2010s, Hyundai moved to the Philips ID46 chip. In the mid-to-late 2010s you find DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with a Texas DST-AES chip listed on some models.

The newest generations use NXP Hitag-AES smart keys, arriving by model: Elantra smart keys from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025. Sellers label these newest chips inconsistently. Most are called '4A', but the 2021 and newer Elantra shows a '4A' versus '6A' split in listings. For that reason we do not trust a listing description. We confirm the chip by the fob part number before we order or program anything.

Programming for chip-equipped cars goes through the OBD-II port. On most 2006 to 2019 models the immobilizer PIN can be read or calculated by the tool, so adding a key or replacing all of them is routine locksmith work that does not involve the dealer.

Does your Hyundai even have an immobilizer?

This is the part that surprises people. A very large share of 2011 to 2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers the Elantra 2011 to 2022, Sonata 2011 to 2019, Tucson 2011 to 2022, Santa Fe 2013 to 2022, Accent 2018 to 2022, Kona 2018 to 2022, and even the Palisade 2020 to 2021. Those missing immobilizers are the root of the 2021 to 2023 theft wave that people call the 'Kia Boys' problem.

In practical terms, a no-immobilizer Hyundai needs no programming. Any properly cut metal key starts it. That is why a hardware-store copy works on one Hyundai and fails on another that looks identical from the outside: trim and build date decide, not the model year alone. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.

If your car is one of the no-immobilizer trims and was a theft target, a new key may not be your real problem. Owners often need the ignition lock repaired and Hyundai's free anti-theft software update, in addition to or instead of a key. We will tell you that honestly rather than sell you a key you do not need.

What if you have lost every Hyundai key?

All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On immobilizer-equipped Hyundais through roughly 2019, the tool can read or calculate the PIN, so we can create a new key from scratch at the car without involving the dealer. On a no-immobilizer trim, it can be as simple as cutting a metal key to the lock.

The newest Hitag-AES '4A' generations, roughly 2023 and later depending on the model, are the honest exception. Aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage for your specific car before promising anything. If your Hyundai falls in the dealer-only group, we will say so on the phone instead of having you wait at the curb.

If you are in that spot right now, our page on lost car key replacement in Paramount covers what to gather and what to expect.

What affects the cost of Hyundai key replacement in Paramount?

We do not quote numbers in an article because the real answer depends on your car. These are the factors that move the cost up or down, so you can see why two Hyundais can be priced very differently.

  • Whether the car has an immobilizer at all. A plain metal key on a no-immobilizer trim is the lighter-cost job, since no programming is involved.
  • The key type: a standard chip key, a DST80 flip key, or a push-button smart fob each cost differently to supply.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a key is usually more economical than an all-keys-lost job, which takes more steps.
  • The generation of the car. Newer Hitag-AES systems can take more tooling and checking than older ID46 cars.
  • Whether the ignition or door lock is worn or damaged and needs repair before a new key will work reliably.
  • Fob quality. Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips are a common cause of intermittent failures, so we talk through the options with you.
  • Whether the car is locked and needs entry first, and where and when you need us.

Dealer or locksmith for a Hyundai key: which is the fair choice?

The dealer is not the enemy, and we will say when it is the right call. For some of the newest Hyundais, especially 2023 and later models where aftermarket tool coverage is still maturing, the dealer or NASTF-credentialed service may be the only route for certain jobs. If that is your car, we will tell you after checking the fob number or VIN.

For most Hyundais from the 2006 to 2019 era and many older chip-equipped cars, a locksmith can do everything the dealer can, without the tow and without leaving the car somewhere for days. We come to you, program on site, and the work is usually the more economical route. And if your Hyundai is a base trim with no immobilizer, a dealer visit may not be needed for the key at all.

If you are comparing options, ask any locksmith for their California BSIS LCO license number before work starts. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and a legitimate company will give it to you. You can compare what we do with the broader service on our Paramount car key replacement page, or read about Hyundai keys in general.

Where in Paramount do we work on Hyundai keys?

Paramount is a flat coastal-plain city in the southeast part of Los Angeles County, ZIP 90723, about 23 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. We work throughout it, including the old Hynes and Clearwater districts, the Paramount Boulevard and Downey Avenue corridors where apartment complexes are common, the Alondra Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue corridors, the Somerset Boulevard area, and the streets around Progress Park. We also reach the area near Hollydale in South Gate.

The scenarios here shape the work. In apartment complexes, a Hyundai owner who locks the fob inside or loses the only key often needs a lockout and then a spare. Postwar single-family homes mean cars at driveways and curbs, where an add-a-key visit is easy. In the city's mobile home parks, we meet people right at their space. Near the Paramount Swap Meet, Paramount Park or Ralph C. Dills Park, a lost or locked-in key can happen far from home. If you are locked out first, see our Paramount car lockout service.

The climate is mild with a morning marine layer. Salt-air corrosion is not a meaningful factor here, so worn keys and locks in Paramount are usually from age and mileage rather than weather. Damp winters can swell older wood doors on homes, but that affects house doors, not your Hyundai.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Hyundai?

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are one company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, not a dispatch service passing your call to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

Our approach is plain. We tell you whether your Hyundai has an immobilizer, whether it needs programming, and whether a dealer is the better fit. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. For fob-specific questions, see our Paramount key fob replacement page, or visit the Paramount locksmith page to see everything else we do. You can also contact us directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Hyundai key at my home in Paramount?

Yes, in most cases. Our mobile vans come to the car, whether it is at an apartment complex, a house curb, or a mobile home park. We confirm the key type and your car's immobilizer status by phone first. If it falls into a dealer-only case, we will tell you.

Will a hardware-store copy work on my Hyundai?

It depends on the trim and build date. On no-immobilizer base trims, a properly cut plain metal key starts the car. On chip-equipped trims, a plain copy will open the door at most but will not start the engine.

Does my Hyundai have an immobilizer?

Not necessarily. Many 2011 to 2022 base turn-key trims shipped without one, and Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021. We check your specific car by trim, build date and VIN instead of guessing from the model name.

Can you replace a Hyundai smart key if I lost all of them?

Often yes, but it depends on the generation. On many models through 2019 the tool can read or calculate the PIN. On 2023 and newer Hitag-AES cars, aftermarket coverage is still maturing and some jobs may need the dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm before starting.

My Hyundai says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not always. A dead battery is a common cause, and the emergency blade can still open the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be failing, especially a low-quality cloned or aftermarket one. We can test it.

My Hyundai was targeted by thieves. Is a new key enough?

Often it is not. Owners of no-immobilizer trims frequently need ignition lock or steering column repair, and Hyundai's free anti-theft software update. We can fix the lock and keys, and we will point out where the dealer update fits in.

Do I have to prove I own the car?

Yes. A responsible locksmith will ask for ID and proof of ownership, such as registration or title, before making a key. It protects you as much as anyone.

Is a locksmith cheaper than the Hyundai dealer?

Often it is the more economical route, mainly because we come to you and skip the tow. But cost depends on the key type, whether you have a working key, and the car's generation. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will walk through the factors for your car.
