What do Hyundai owners in Oxnard usually call us for?
Most Hyundai calls fall into a few groups: a lost or broken key, a smart fob that has quit, a door locked with the key inside, and a car that was tampered with and now needs its ignition looked at. Hyundai's key history is more mixed than most makes, so the first thing we do is work out which kind of key your car actually uses.
Where it happens follows how people live here. Oxnard has a lot of apartment stock, and in the denser areas near Oxnard College and along Saviers Road, cars sit in shared lots and on the street. A fob goes through the wash, a spare was never made, or a door shuts with the key in the cupholder. If you park near Mandalay State Beach or Channel Islands Harbor, a key that slips out of a pocket on the way back to the car is the kind of call that makes sense. In newer neighborhoods like RiverPark, the common story is a household that has one working key and has never needed a second until now.
Our Oxnard car key replacement page covers every make. This page is about Hyundai specifically, because it is the make where trim and build date most often change the answer.
Why does trim matter more than model year on a Hyundai?
Ask what key a Hyundai uses and the honest answer is often 'it depends on the trim.' Two cars of the same model and year can have different systems: one with a transponder chip, one with no immobilizer at all. So we ask about trim and build date before we talk about model year. When a chip is present, the general progression looks like this:
- Late 1990s and early 2000s: some cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, used a Texas 4D-60 chip.
- 2000s into the early 2010s: Philips ID46 chips.
- Mid to late 2010s: DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 chips, with Texas DST-AES '8A' listed on some models.
- Newest generations: NXP Hitag-AES smart keys, arriving by model. Elantra from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, Tucson from 2025.
What about Hyundais that have no chip at all?
This is the part owners are most often surprised by. Per Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list, a very large share of 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer. The list covers the Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022 and even the Palisade 2020-2021. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.
In practice that changes the job. On a no-immobilizer car, any properly cut metal key starts it and no programming is involved. On a chip-equipped car, a hardware-store copy will turn in the door but will not start the engine. Sellers also label the newest NXP chips inconsistently ('4A' on most models, a '4A' versus '6A' split on the 2021 and later Elantra), so we confirm the chip by the fob part number instead of trusting a listing.

Call (213) 577-1366How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?
Everything happens where your car is parked, whether that is a driveway, an apartment lot, a harbor-area space or a street. Here is the sequence.
- You call (213) 577-1366. It is answered 24 hours a day, every day. Tell us the model, year, trim, whether the car starts with a turn key or a push button, and whether any working key remains.
- We narrow down the likely key type by phone and say plainly what still needs to be confirmed in person, including any chance the car falls into a dealer-only case.
- A mobile van comes to you from our operation based out of Westwood. We do not hand your call to a third-party dispatcher.
- At the car we ask for proof that you own it, such as registration and photo ID, before making or programming a key.
- We check the VIN, the fob part number if you have one, and whether the car has an immobilizer at all.
- We cut the key if it has a blade, then program through the OBD-II port when a chip or smart key is involved.
- We test every function before leaving: door, ignition or push-button start, and the remote buttons.
What if I have lost every Hyundai key?
It depends on the car. Immobilizer-equipped Hyundais program through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and on most 2006-2019 models the tool can read or calculate the immobilizer PIN. Add-a-key and all-keys-lost work are routine locksmith jobs on those cars, with no dealer involved.
On a base no-immobilizer car, the job is making a key, not programming one, because there is no chip to teach the car.
The newest generations are where we are careful. On the Hitag-AES '4A' generation, roughly 2023 and later depending on the model, aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage per job and tell you before you wait on us. More on the process is on our lost car key replacement page for Oxnard.
What other Hyundai key problems do we see?
Not every call is a lost key. These are the common ones, and several are not fixed by a new key alone.
- Theft-damaged cars: no-immobilizer base trims were targeted in the 2021-2023 theft wave. Owners often need ignition lock repair and Hyundai's free anti-theft software update, not just keys. That update comes from Hyundai, not from us, and a new key will not add an immobilizer to a car that never had one.
- Damaged ignition lock cylinders and steering columns from theft attempts.
- Worn ignition and door-lock wafers on high-mileage cars.
- Dead smart-fob batteries. The car says 'key not detected' while the emergency blade still opens the door. Try the battery first, since that is the lighter-cost fix.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that work for a while and then fail intermittently.
- Locked-out situations with the key inside, covered on our Oxnard car lockout page.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of Hyundai key replacement in Oxnard?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the same model can be a very different job depending on the car in front of us. The real factors are:
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A cut metal key on a no-immobilizer trim is usually the more economical route compared with a chip key that must be programmed.
- Key type: plain blade, chip key, flip key or smart fob.
- Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost. Making a spare while you still have a working key is usually the more economical route.
- Generation. The newest Hitag-AES cars may need more specialized tools, or in some cases dealer-level service.
- Related repairs, such as a damaged ignition cylinder or worn wafers.
- Fob quality. Cheap clones can cost you twice when they fail.
- Time of day and the trip to your location, since Oxnard is about 58 miles from our Westwood base.
Should I go to the dealer or call a locksmith?
Both are legitimate, and the right choice depends on the car. A dealer has direct manufacturer access, which matters for some of the newest smart-key Hyundais. The tradeoff is that a car with no working key usually has to be moved to them before anything can be done.
For the large middle of the market, including immobilizer cars from roughly 2006 to 2019 where the PIN can be read or calculated, a mobile locksmith can do the whole job at your car. For 2023-and-later cars, we check what the tools support first. If your car needs dealer or NASTF-credentialed service, we will say so on the phone, which saves you a wasted wait. If you are unsure which category you are in, our Hyundai key guide is a good place to start.

Frequently asked questions
Can a hardware-store copy start my Hyundai?
It depends on the trim and build date. On no-immobilizer trims, a plain metal copy that is cut properly will start the car. On chip-equipped trims it will open the door but not start the engine.
Do you come to Oxnard at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Oxnard around the clock.
My Hyundai says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, especially if the emergency blade still opens the door. If a new battery does not help, the fob itself may need replacing. See our Oxnard key fob replacement page.
Does my Elantra or Tucson have an immobilizer?
Many base turn-key trims of 2011-2022 Elantras and Tucsons shipped without one. We confirm by VIN and in person rather than guessing from the model name.
Will you work on a 2024 or 2025 Hyundai?
We check coverage per job. Aftermarket programming is documented for some of the newest generations, but tool support varies by model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We will tell you which applies.
Do I need to show proof of ownership?
Yes. Before we make or program a key, we ask for registration and photo ID that matches the vehicle.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
We can explain what drives the cost once we know the model, trim, key type and whether you have a working key. We do not publish numbers on this page because they depend on the exact car.
