What do Lexus owners in North Hills usually need?
North Hills used to be called Sepulveda, and the ranch-tract character is still obvious: 1950s homes in two halves, North Hills West and North Hills East, divided by the 405. Apartment clusters run along Parthenia Street and Sepulveda Boulevard, North Hills West has gated townhome and condo communities, and Nordhoff Street carries the business strips. A Lexus here might sleep in a ranch-house driveway, an apartment space, a townhome community lot or a work lot. Each of those puts a different kind of strain on a key.
Lockouts tend to happen where people are rushed or where there is no spare within reach: stepping out at an apartment on the Sepulveda corridor with the fob still in a cupholder, or locking up at a Nordhoff Street business and realizing the fob is inside. If that is your situation right now, our North Hills car lockout service is the page to read. This page is about the key itself: replacing it, copying it, or programming a new one. Here is what Lexus drivers in this part of the Valley typically call about:
- A smart fob that stopped working, with the dash saying the key is not detected
- A fob locked inside the car at an apartment or work lot
- A lost fob with no spare in the house
- An older RX, ES or GX whose key sticks in the ignition or will not turn
- A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine
- A cracked fob shell, dead buttons or a board that got wet
How does mobile Lexus key service work at the curb?
North Hills is about 15 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and our mobile vans carry the cutting and programming equipment. Most Lexus jobs are finished right where the car is parked, so you do not have to tow a car just because the key is gone. Here is how a typical call goes.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
- Tell us the model, the year and whether you still have any working key. If you can read us the VIN, even better, because Lexus changed systems partway through some generations.
- We tell you which kind of key your car uses, what the job involves, and what will drive the cost, before any work starts.
- We confirm you are the owner or authorized to have the key made, using your ID and the registration or title.
- We cut the blade, whether that is a laser-cut blade for a transponder key or the hidden emergency blade inside a smart fob.
- We program the key to the car through the OBD-II port with professional equipment.
- We test everything: door locks, trunk, remote buttons, push-button or ignition start, and the emergency blade. Then we explain how to look after the fob battery.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Lexus key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Lexus follows Toyota's chip technology but adopted smart keys earlier than most brands. That means a Lexus from the 2000s can have a completely different key from one a few years newer. The era decides how the key is cut, what chip is inside, and how it gets programmed. Exact changeover years vary by model, which is why we check your specific year and, when needed, the VIN rather than guessing from the badge.
These are the main stages:
- Late 1990s to roughly 2005: Texas 4C fixed-code transponder keys on laser-cut blades, a longer blade first (TOY40) and a shorter one later (TOY48).
- 2001 to 2009: the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip in a short high-security key (TOY50-PT), found on models such as the LS430, GX470, ES330 and RX330 or RX350.
- Roughly 2006 to 2012: first-generation SmartAccess push-button start, arriving model by model. The IS got it in 2006, the ES and LS in 2007, and the RX and GX in 2010, using the HYQ14AAB fob.
- 2010 to 2017 RX, GX and LS: the HYQ14ACX fob with DST80 security.
- 2013 onward: 128-bit DST-AES smart keys from the HYQ14FBA, FBB, FLB and FBF families.
- 2022 and newer NX, 2023 and newer RX, and the new GX550: the newest server-authenticated DST-AES smart keys.
What if you have lost every Lexus key?
All-keys-lost is the hard case on any modern car, and the honest answer for a Lexus depends on its era. Toyota-family immobilizer tooling covers much of it, and Toyota's own immobilizer and smart-key reset path, which uses Techstream with a security pass-code, reaches 1998 through 2023 models. But what a locksmith can do at the curb varies. Here is where things stand:
2000s bladed keys with 4C or 4D-68 chips usually program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, all-keys-lost included. This is the most routine group.
First-generation smart-key cars, roughly 2006 to 2012, historically meant resetting or replacing the smart ECU, or going to the dealer. Current professional tools can usually reset the smart code over OBD, but we confirm coverage for your specific car before promising anything.
On 2013 and newer 8A-era cars, adding a key when you still have one is easy over OBD. All-keys-lost uses DST-AES emulator hardware.
From about 2020, all-keys-lost increasingly requires Toyota or Lexus server codes. That means locksmith-credentialed access (NASTF VSP) or tool-specific authorization.
The newest platforms, meaning 2022 and newer NX, 2023 and newer RX, 2024 and newer GX550 and the 2026 ES, use server-authenticated key registration. All-keys-lost is possible with specialist server-connected equipment on many of them, but coverage is still maturing and some jobs remain dealer-only.
We will not promise that every newest-generation Lexus can be finished at the curb. If yours cannot, we will tell you plainly on the phone or when we arrive, so you do not lose a day. Our page on lost car key replacement in North Hills explains the process in more detail.

Call (213) 577-1366Dead batteries, worn blades and the other common Lexus key problems
Not every key problem needs a new key. The most common one on smart-key Lexus models is a dead fob battery: the car reports that the key is not detected, while the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. That points to the battery or the fob, not to the car. It is worth sorting out before you pay for a replacement.
Other problems we see on Lexus keys fall into a few patterns:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage 2000s models: the key sticks or stops turning. A new key will not cure a worn lock, so sometimes the lock itself needs work.
- Worn or chipped laser-cut blades: the blade no longer turns the locks even though the chip inside still works. A fresh blade cut can bring it back.
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder: they open the doors but will not start the engine, because the car never hears the right chip.
- Cracked fob shells, broken buttons and water-damaged boards: sometimes a shell swap or repair is enough, and sometimes the whole fob should be replaced. Our key fob replacement in North Hills page covers that decision.
What affects the cost of a Lexus key replacement in North Hills?
We do not put numbers on a web page because a Lexus key job is not one thing. Two cars with the same badge can need very different work. These are the factors that move the cost:
- Key type: a bladed transponder key sits at the lighter-cost end, while a smart fob costs well above it, especially on 2020 and newer server-authenticated systems.
- Whether you have a working key: adding a key is simpler than all-keys-lost, which can need emulator hardware or server access.
- Server authorization: newer cars that require Toyota or Lexus server codes add steps and equipment.
- Condition of the locks: a worn ignition or door lock may need attention on top of the key itself.
- Fob damage: a new battery or shell is a different job from a full fob replacement.
- Where the car is and when you call, since mobile service means we travel to you.
Dealer or mobile locksmith: what is the fair comparison?
The dealer is the right call in some cases, and we will say so. Dealers have factory access, and on the newest server-authenticated Lexus models some jobs are still dealer-only. If your car is a 2023 or newer RX or a new GX550 and our equipment does not cover it yet, the dealer is where it goes.
Where we make sense is everywhere else: you do not have to get the car to a service department, which with every key lost can mean a tow. We cover 2000s bladed keys, first-generation smart keys and most 8A-era cars, and we answer the phone at any hour. For an add-a-key job on a car you still can drive, mobile service is usually the more economical route, though we would rather you call both and compare.
One more point whichever route you take. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for their license number before work starts. Be careful with anyone who dodges the question.

Lexus key service across North Hills and the 91343 ZIP code
North Hills sits in ZIP code 91343, and we work across all of it. In North Hills West, west of the I-405, that includes the gated townhome and condo communities where cars park in shared areas. In North Hills East, we serve the ranch-tract streets on the other side of the freeway. We also come to the Sepulveda Boulevard, Nordhoff Street and Parthenia Street corridors, and the VA Sepulveda campus area.
If your Lexus is near the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, the Mid-Valley Regional Branch Library, James Monroe High School, North Hills Community Park or the I-405 and Nordhoff Street interchange, tell us where you are parked and we will meet you there. If you work on a Nordhoff Street business strip and the fob is stuck inside the car, we can handle that too, and we also do commercial lock work in the same area.
The climate matters a little. North Hills is in the north-central Valley with hot summers, and there are no coastal corrosion factors here, so a water-damaged fob board usually traces back to a spill or a drop rather than salt air. Lexus models in our key guide
Frequently asked questions
Can you come to me in North Hills if I have lost my Lexus smart key?
Yes, our mobile vans serve North Hills, about 15 miles from our Westwood storefront. Call (213) 577-1366, tell us the model and year, and we will explain what your car needs. Some of the newest models may need dealer involvement, and we will say so up front.
Why does my Lexus say the key is not detected when the fob is in the car?
The most common cause is a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob should still open the door even when the battery is dead. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob itself may have a problem, and we can test it.
Can you make a key for an older Lexus like an RX330, GX470 or ES330?
Yes. Those 2001 to 2009 models typically use the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip in a short high-security key, and we can cut and program them through the OBD-II port, including when every key is lost. We still confirm your specific year and VIN first.
My hardware-store copy opens the doors but will not start the car. Why?
Copies cut without a transponder chip can turn the locks, but the car never receives the right immobilizer signal. The key needs a proper chip programmed to your Lexus, or the copy has to be replaced with a correct transponder key.
Can you do all-keys-lost on a 2023 RX or a new GX550?
Maybe, and we will be honest about it. The newest platforms use server-authenticated key registration. Specialist server-connected equipment can handle many of them, but coverage is still maturing and some jobs remain dealer-only. We confirm by VIN before committing.
What do I need to show you to get a new Lexus key made?
We need to know you are the owner or authorized to have the key made. Have your photo ID and the registration or title ready. If the car is locked in a shared lot, we can discuss options on the phone first.
Is a spare key really more economical than waiting until all are lost?
Usually, yes. Adding a key while you still have a working one is simpler, especially on 2013 and newer cars where it is an easy OBD job. All-keys-lost can require emulator hardware or server authorization, which makes the job more involved.
Do you work nights, weekends and holidays?
Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. Lexus key problems do not keep business hours, and neither do we.
