What do Lexus owners in Maywood usually need?
Maywood covers about 1.2 square miles and is among the most densely populated cities in California. The housing is small 1920s-1940s bungalows, many with rear units, plus two- and three-story apartment buildings, and most households rent. That shapes the car key calls we get here. Several people often share one household and one set of keys, and the car gets used by everyone. A spare fob can end up in someone else's unit or never get made at all.
The Lexus problems themselves are fairly predictable. Most come down to a short list:
A lot of these calls start away from home. Commuters who park near Maywood Riverfront Park and head off for the day sometimes come back to a dead fob or a missing key. A mobile technician is useful there because the car stays where it is and nobody has to arrange a tow.
- A dead smart-fob battery. The dash says 'key not detected', yet the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
- A lost smart fob, which is the most involved and costly replacement on newer models.
- A worn ignition lock on a high-mileage 2000s Lexus, where the key sticks or stops turning.
- A worn or chipped laser-cut blade that no longer turns the locks even though the chip inside still works.
- A hardware-store copy cut without a transponder. It opens the doors but will not start the engine.
- A cracked fob shell, broken buttons, or a water-damaged board.
How does mobile Lexus key service work at the curb?
We bring the cutting and programming equipment to wherever your Lexus is parked. Here is how a typical visit goes:
- You call (213) 577-1366 and give us the model, the year, whether it has a push-button start, and whether you still have any working key.
- We tell you what we know about that system and what we still need to confirm, usually by VIN or in person. We will say so plainly if your car is one that may end up at the dealer.
- A van heads to your location. We ask you to show the car is yours, and you should expect that from any locksmith you hire.
- We cut the blade on the spot for bladed keys and program the transponder through the OBD-II port. For smart keys we register the new fob with the matching equipment.
- We test everything before we call the job done: the door locks, the remote buttons, the emergency blade, and starting the engine.
- If you are down to one key, we will point that out. A spare made now is usually easier than a lost-key job later.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Lexus key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Lexus follows Toyota's chip technology, but it adopted smart keys earlier than most brands. Knowing which era your key belongs to explains why one Lexus is a quick job and another needs specialist gear. Exact changeover years vary by model, so we verify the year and model rather than guess.
These are the main stages:
- Late 1990s to roughly 2005: Texas 4C fixed-code transponders on laser-cut blades, first the longer TOY40 and then the shorter TOY48.
- 2001-2009 models such as the LS430, GX470, ES330 and RX330/RX350: the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip in a short high-security TOY50-PT key.
- First-generation SmartAccess push-button start, arriving model by model: IS in 2006, ES and LS in 2007, RX and GX in 2010. These use the HYQ14AAB fob.
- 2010-2017 RX, GX and LS: the DST+/DST80 HYQ14ACX fob.
- From 2013: 128-bit 8A (DST-AES) smart keys in the HYQ14FBA, FBB, FLB and FBF families.
- 2022+ NX, 2023+ RX and the new GX550: the newest server-authenticated 'B9' DST-AES smart keys.
What if you have lost every key?
All-keys-lost is where the era matters most. On 2000s bladed keys (4C and 4D-68), professional equipment can usually program a new key through the OBD-II port even with no working key. Toyota's immobilizer and smart-key reset path covers 1998-2023 models.
First-generation smart-key cars, roughly 2006-2012, are different. In the past an all-keys-lost job on these meant resetting or replacing the smart ECU, or going to the dealer. Current professional tools can usually reset the smart code over OBD, but we confirm coverage for your specific vehicle before we promise anything.
On 8A-era cars from 2013 on, adding a key is easy over OBD. All-keys-lost uses DST-AES emulator hardware. From about 2020, US all-keys-lost increasingly needs Toyota/Lexus server codes. That requires locksmith-credentialed access (NASTF VSP) or tool-specific authorization.
The newest platforms are the 2022+ NX, 2023+ RX, 2024+ GX550 and 2026 ES. They use server-authenticated key registration. All-keys-lost is possible on many of them with specialist server-connected equipment, but coverage is still maturing and some jobs remain dealer-only. If yours is one of those, we will tell you on the phone instead of sending a van that cannot finish the job.
What affects the cost of a Lexus key in Maywood?
We do not quote numbers in an article, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost up or down:
- Key type. A bladed transponder key is a much lighter job than a smart fob, and the newest server-authenticated fobs cost well above the older types.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car you can still start is far simpler than all-keys-lost.
- Model year. Cars from about 2020 onward may need server codes or specialist equipment, which adds time and cost.
- Whether blade cutting is needed, and whether the old blade is worn.
- Fob repair versus replacement. A cracked shell or a dead battery is often a lighter-cost fix than a new fob.
- Time and place. A night call, or a car parked somewhere hard to reach, takes different effort than a daytime visit.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or mobile locksmith: a fair comparison
Both are legitimate options, and which is better depends on your car. A dealer has direct access to Toyota and Lexus systems, which matters on some of the newest models. The tradeoff is that your Lexus has to get there. If you have lost every key, that usually means a tow and a wait for an appointment.
We come to you, which is the main advantage, and we work on the older and mid-era systems regularly. For many 2000s bladed keys and 2013+ add-a-key jobs, mobile service is usually the more economical route because it skips the tow and the trip. For some 2022+ and newer platforms the dealer may be the only route, and we will say so.
Our advice is to call us first. If we can do it at the curb, we will. If we cannot, you will have lost a few minutes of conversation and not a day of running around.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood alongside our mobile vans. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call, you reach us. We are one company, not a dispatch service that sells your job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call for it, including us.
Lexus key service across Maywood
Maywood's ZIP code is 90270, and we work across the whole city. That includes the Atlantic Boulevard corridor, the Slauson Avenue corridor, and the riverfront blocks near Maywood Riverfront Park. We also cover northern Maywood near Vernon and southern Maywood near Bell. We are about 18 miles from our Westwood base, which is why mobile vans, not a walk-in counter, are how we serve you here.
In a renter-majority city of bungalows, rear units and apartment buildings, a car key problem often shows up next to a home lockout, a mailbox lock or a rekey between tenants. We handle those too. Our Maywood service page covers the home and business side. If you are locked out of the car itself, see car lockout service in Maywood.
Summer heat can swell wooden doors in older buildings here. That is a door issue, not a car one, but it is worth knowing if your front door is sticking too.

Call (213) 577-1366Keeping your Lexus keys working
Replace a smart-fob battery before it dies, because a dead one is the most common reason for a 'key not detected' message and an unnecessary call. Keep the emergency blade usable. On older cars, do not ignore a key that sticks, since a worn ignition lock gets worse. Skip the cheap blade-only copies, which open doors but will not start the car. A spare made while you still have a working key is usually the easier path. See our Lexus key page and general car key guide for more detail.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Lexus key in Maywood if I have no working key?
Often yes. On 2000s bladed keys, professional OBD equipment can usually handle it. On 2013+ cars we use DST-AES emulator hardware. Some 2022+ models may be dealer-only. Call (213) 577-1366 with the year and model and we will tell you honestly.
My Lexus says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?
Not always. A dead battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade usually still opens the door. Check the battery first. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may need repair or replacement. See our key fob replacement in Maywood page.
Why will my copied Lexus key open the door but not start the car?
Most likely it was cut like an ordinary key without a transponder chip programmed to your car. The blade fits the locks, but the immobilizer does not recognize it. We can program a proper key to your Lexus.
Do I have to tow my Lexus to you?
No. Our vans come to you in Maywood and we cut and program at the car. The exception is a case that needs dealer-only access, and we will say so on the phone before anyone drives out.
Which Lexus models use which kind of key?
It depends on model and year, so we verify. As a general guide: 4C bladed keys to about 2005, 4D-68 on 2001-2009 models like the LS430 and RX350, smart keys from 2006 onward model by model, 8A smart keys from 2013, and server-authenticated keys on 2022+ NX and 2023+ RX.
Can you replace a lost Lexus key if the car is parked near Maywood Riverfront Park?
Yes, that is a normal call for us. Tell us where the car is, what model and year, and whether you have any working key. Our vans serve all of Maywood, ZIP 90270, and we will confirm what is possible before heading out.
How do I know the locksmith is legitimate?
Ask for their BSIS LCO license. California requires locksmith companies to hold one. Also ask whether you are dealing with the company itself or a dispatch service. We are one company, with our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.
Where can I read more before calling?
Start with our Maywood car key replacement page or our guide to lost car key replacement in Maywood. You can also reach us through the contact page or call (213) 577-1366 at any hour.
