What do Hyundai owners in Maywood usually need?
Most Hyundai calls from Maywood fall into a few groups: someone lost their only key, someone has a fob that quit working, someone is locked out with the key visible on the seat, or someone owns an older base-model car and wants a spare made without paying for more than the car actually requires. Maywood is about 1.2 square miles and among the most densely populated cities in California, so these problems tend to show up right where people live and park.
Think about how life works here. Most households rent, in small 1920s-1940s bungalows (many with rear units) and two- and three-story apartment buildings. Your car key usually rides on the same ring as your apartment key, your mailbox key, and maybe a security screen door key. When that ring goes missing, you can lose access to the car and the home in one afternoon. We handle the car side on this page, and the home and building lock side in Maywood is a separate job we can coordinate on the same visit if you ask.
Commuters are the other regular group. If you leave a Hyundai near Maywood Riverfront Park for the day and come back to a dead fob, a snapped blade, or a missing key, you need someone who comes to the car instead of asking you to get it to a shop. That is the whole point of our mobile vans.
- Lost your only Hyundai key and need a new one made and programmed
- Spare key or add-a-key so you are not one lost ring away from a bad day
- Smart fob that says 'key not detected' or no longer starts the car
- Worn or broken metal key, or a worn ignition or door lock
- Ignition or steering column damage after a theft attempt
- Keys locked inside the car (see our Maywood car lockout service if that is all you need)
How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?
We do the work where the car is parked, whether that is in front of a bungalow, outside an apartment building, in a shared lot, or along Atlantic Boulevard or Slauson Avenue. You do not need to tow the car anywhere for most key jobs. Here is how a typical visit goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. A person answers, not a menu. Tell us the model, the approximate year, whether it has a turn key or a push-button start, and how many working keys you still have.
- We ask a few questions that decide the job: Is there a chip in your current key? Is the car a base trim? Is there a part number on the back of the fob? Photos of the key or fob can help.
- We come to the car and confirm the vehicle with you. We check the VIN and your proof that the car is yours, because we only make keys for vehicles whose owner we can reasonably verify.
- We check the ignition and the system type. A no-immobilizer base trim is a different job from a chip key or a smart fob, and we test rather than assume.
- We cut the key or prepare the fob, then program it through the OBD-II port with professional tools where the car requires it.
- We test everything before we leave: door lock, trunk or hatch, ignition or push-button start, and the remote functions if the fob has them. If you have a spare that was never tested, we test it too.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Hyundai key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Hyundai's key history in the US is unusually split by trim, so model year alone does not tell the story. When a chip is present, the systems have moved through a few generations. Here is the short version, and we confirm the details on your actual car.
On some late-1990s and early-2000s cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe, the chip was a Texas 4D-60. Through the 2000s and into the early 2010s, Hyundai used Philips ID46 chips. In the mid-to-late 2010s you see DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 systems, with a Texas DST-AES chip (sometimes listed as '8A') on some models.
The newest cars use NXP Hitag-AES smart keys, arriving by model: Elantra smart keys from 2021, Santa Fe from 2023, Sonata and Kona from 2024, and Tucson from 2025. Parts sellers label these newest chips inconsistently. Most are listed as '4A', but the 2021 and newer Elantra has a '4A' versus '6A' split. That is why we confirm the chip by the fob part number rather than trusting a listing or a guess from the model name.
- Older chip keys: usually cut-and-program jobs done at the curb
- Flip keys: the blade folds into the fob, and the chip and remote both need to be right
- Smart keys: push-button start, with the fob battery and the emergency blade as part of the diagnosis
- Newest Hitag-AES generations: we confirm coverage per job before promising anything
Does your Hyundai even have a chip?
This is the most important Hyundai-specific fact, and it surprises people. A very large share of 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers the Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022, and even the Palisade 2020-2021. The missing immobilizer is the root of the 2021-2023 theft wave you may have heard called the 'Kia Boys' trend.
What this means for key replacement: on a no-immobilizer car, any properly cut metal key starts it, and no programming is needed. On a chip-equipped trim, a hardware-store copy will turn the lock but will not start the car. Trim and build date decide, not model year alone. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so later builds always carry a chip.
If your Hyundai was a theft target, you may need more than keys. Owners often come to us with a damaged ignition lock cylinder or steering column. We can look at the ignition side of that. Hyundai's free anti-theft software update is something to ask your dealer about for the models on that list, and it is separate from key work.

Call (213) 577-1366What if you have lost every Hyundai key?
All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. On most 2006-2019 Hyundais, the immobilizer PIN can be read or calculated by our programming tool, so add-a-key and all-keys-lost are routine locksmith jobs without dealer involvement. We make a new key, program it, and remove the missing key from the car's memory if the system allows it so a lost key cannot be used later. See our overview of lost car key replacement in Maywood for the general process.
If your Hyundai is a base trim with no immobilizer, the job is simpler still: we cut a key to the lock and the car starts. We can usually do that from the door or ignition lock, without a key to copy.
The newest cars are where we are careful. On the Hitag-AES '4A' generations (roughly 2023 and later, depending on the model), aftermarket OBD programming is documented. One example is a 2023 Santa Fe all-keys-lost done with an Autel IM-series tool using an on-tool OBD PIN read. But tool coverage is still maturing, PIN-read support varies by tool and model, and some jobs may need Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We tell you which route your car needs once we have the VIN and have looked at the system. If it is dealer-only, we say so plainly and do not waste your time.
What affects the cost of Hyundai key replacement in Maywood?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car in front of us. Here is what actually moves the cost, so you can judge any quote you get from anyone.
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A base trim with no chip needs a cut key only, which is usually the more economical route. A chip key adds programming. A smart key adds a fob and more programming.
- Key type. A plain metal key, a flip key, and a smart fob are very different parts.
- How many working keys you have. Adding a key to a car you can start is usually simpler than all keys lost, where the tool must get access to the immobilizer with no existing key.
- Model and generation. The newest Hitag-AES cars can take more work, and some may need dealer service.
- Part availability and quality. Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs can fail intermittently, so a part that is slightly more expensive up front can save a repeat visit.
- Time of day and location. After-hours and distant jobs involve more of our time and travel. We tell you how the visit is priced before we begin, not after.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or locksmith: which is the right call?
Both are legitimate, and the right choice depends on the car. For most Hyundais through about 2019, a locksmith with the right tools can do add-a-key and all keys lost at the car, so you do not have to arrange a tow or lose a day. That is where we are strongest.
For the newest generations, the dealer may be the right answer. Tool support for some 2023-and-later models is still maturing, and certain jobs need dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. If we find your car falls in that group, we will say so before we start the job. A dealer is also a sensible place to go for the free anti-theft software update on the models Hyundai lists, since that is software work and not key work.
Whichever way you go, ask any locksmith for their California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a legitimate company will show it. Ask us too. We would rather you ask than guess.
Hyundai key service around Maywood
We serve all of Maywood, ZIP 90270. The Atlantic Boulevard corridor and the Slauson Avenue corridor are the busiest parts of the city, with storefronts, small businesses, and apartment buildings sharing the same streets, so cars there get parked and left for long stretches. If you lost a key at a shop on either corridor, or the fob died as you came out to the car, we can come to you. The intersection of Atlantic and Slauson is an easy landmark to give us when you call.
The riverfront blocks near Maywood Riverfront Park and the Los Angeles River bike path are where many commuters leave a car and head off for the day. A lost key on the walk to the river path or a fob that stops responding in the lot happens more than you would think. Tell us the nearest cross street and we will find you.
Northern Maywood near Vernon and southern Maywood near Bell are both within our service area. So are the blocks around Maywood City Hall and Maywood Park. In a city of mostly renters in older bungalows and apartment buildings, a key ring often carries the car, the unit, the mailbox, and a security screen door. If you lost the whole ring, think about the home locks too. Rekeying between tenants, or after a loss, is a normal job here, and we can look at both on one visit.
Summer heat in this inland part of the LA basin can swell wooden doors in older buildings, which is the main seasonal lock issue at home. For the car, it is simpler: if something about the key or fob has been flaky, do not wait for the day it stops entirely.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Hyundai?
We have been in business since 1987. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Maywood included. When you call, you reach us, not a dispatch broker who sends whoever is available. That matters on a Hyundai, where telling a no-immobilizer base trim from a chip car from a newest-generation smart key is the whole job.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We would rather tell you honestly that your car needs the dealer, or that all you need is a cut key, than sell you something you do not need. Our line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round: (213) 577-1366. You can also visit our Hyundai key overview for the wider picture, our Maywood car key replacement page for all makes, or our key fob replacement service if the key is working but the remote is not.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Hyundai key without the original?
Usually yes. On most 2006-2019 Hyundais with an immobilizer, our tool can read or calculate the PIN, so all keys lost is a routine job. On base trims with no immobilizer we can cut a key to the lock. On the newest 2023-and-later cars, coverage varies by tool and model and some jobs may need the dealer, so we confirm per vehicle.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Hyundai?
It depends on the trim and build date. On a no-immobilizer base trim, a properly cut metal copy starts the car. On a chip-equipped car, the copy will turn the lock but will not start the engine because it has no programmed chip.
Does my Hyundai have an immobilizer?
Not necessarily. Many 2011-2022 base turn-key trims shipped without one, including models on Hyundai's anti-theft software-update list (Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Accent, Kona and the 2020-2021 Palisade). Vehicles produced after November 1, 2021 carry one as standard. We check your car directly.
My push-button Hyundai says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not always. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the emergency blade will still open the door. We check the battery first. If the fob still fails, the fob itself or its programming may be the issue, and we can test and replace it.
Can you come to me if my car won't start?
Yes. We work at the curb in Maywood: in front of a house, in an apartment lot, or near Maywood Riverfront Park. If the car will not start because of a key or ignition problem, we diagnose it on site. Call (213) 577-1366 any time.
My Hyundai was a theft target. Can you help?
We can look at damaged ignition lock cylinders and steering columns and replace or repair keys. Hyundai's free anti-theft software update for listed models is separate, and you would arrange that through a dealer.
Do I need to show proof of ownership?
Yes. We make keys only for vehicles whose owner we can reasonably verify, usually by ID and registration or title matched to the VIN. It protects you, and it is how a legitimate locksmith should work.
Is the dealer ever the better choice?
Sometimes. On the newest Hitag-AES generations, some jobs may require Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. If your car is one of those, we tell you before starting rather than after.
