What do Lexus owners in Irwindale usually need?

Irwindale is an unusual place to lose a car key. Fewer than 2,000 people live here, in a few small enclaves of modest single-family homes near the Civic Center along Arrow Highway. Most of the city's land is gravel quarries, warehouses and manufacturing plants. So a Lexus that needs a key here is often not sitting in a home driveway. It is more likely parked at a trailhead lot, a transit stop or a work site.

Those are the situations that fit this city best:

  • A smart fob dies or goes missing during a day at the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, and the car is stuck in the parking lot.
  • A fob gets lost somewhere around the Irwindale A Line park-and-ride, and the owner needs a replacement made at the car.
  • A worker near the Live Oak Avenue or Arrow Highway industrial corridors has a cracked fob shell, or a blade that no longer turns the lock.
  • A homeowner in the Civic Center enclave has only one key and wants a spare before it disappears.

How does mobile Lexus key service work at the curb?

Irwindale is about 32 miles from our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, so we do this as mobile work. The van comes to you, wherever the Lexus is parked. We will not promise an arrival time before we know where our vans are, but we will tell you plainly when you call.

If you are locked out and the key is inside the car, that is a different and usually simpler job. See our page on car lockout service in Irwindale. This page is about making new keys.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers around the clock, every day of the year. Give us the model, the year, and whether the car starts with a push button or a key you insert.
  2. Tell us whether you have any working key. A car with one key left is an add-a-key job, and a car with none is all-keys-lost. They are handled differently, as explained below.
  3. At the car, we confirm you are the owner or authorized to have a key made, using ID and registration that match the vehicle.
  4. We verify the immobilizer and key type by VIN and in person before cutting or ordering anything. Lexus changed systems several times, and a wrong guess wastes your time.
  5. We cut the blade if there is one, then program the key through the OBD-II port with professional equipment.
  6. We test every function before we leave: doors, trunk, remote buttons, the emergency blade and starting the engine.

Which Lexus key does your car use?

Lexus follows Toyota's chip technology but moved to smart keys earlier than most brands. Here is the progression in plain terms. Exact changeover years vary by model, so treat these as a guide and not a promise about your specific car.

Late 1990s to roughly 2005: Texas 4C fixed-code transponders on laser-cut blades. The blade style was the long TOY40, then the shorter TOY48. These are the simplest Lexus keys to replace.

2001 to 2009: the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip, usually on the short high-security TOY50-PT key. This covers models such as the LS430, GX470, ES330, RX330 and RX350.

First-generation push-button start (SmartAccess) arrived model by model: the IS in 2006, the ES and LS in 2007, the RX and GX in 2010. These use the HYQ14AAB fob.

2010 to 2017 on the RX, GX and LS: the DST+/DST80 HYQ14ACX fob. Because the dates overlap with the first-generation systems, we confirm by VIN rather than by year alone.

From 2013: 128-bit 8A (DST-AES) smart keys, in the HYQ14FBA, FBB, FLB and FBF families.

The newest cars, the 2022 and later NX, the 2023 and later RX and the new GX550, use server-authenticated 'B9' DST-AES smart keys. Registering a key on these involves a connection to Toyota-side authentication, which changes what is possible at the curb.

If you want the model-by-model overview, our Lexus car key page goes deeper, and car keys by make covers other brands.

What if you have lost every Lexus key?

All-keys-lost is where Lexus differs most from one era to the next, so here is the honest version by generation.

2000s bladed keys (4C and 4D-68): most program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, including when no key is left. Toyota's own immobilizer reset path covers these years too.

First-generation smart-key cars, roughly 2006 to 2012: historically, losing every key meant resetting or replacing the smart ECU, or going to the dealer. Current professional tools can usually reset the smart code through the OBD port, but we confirm coverage for your vehicle before promising anything.

2013 and later, 8A-era cars: adding a key while you still have one is easy over OBD. With no key at all, we use DST-AES emulator hardware to get the car to accept a new one.

From about 2020: in the US, all-keys-lost increasingly requires Toyota or Lexus server codes. That means locksmith-credentialed access or tool-specific authorization, and it adds steps.

The newest platforms, meaning the 2022 and later NX, 2023 and later RX, 2024 and later GX550 and 2026 ES, register keys through server authentication. Specialist server-connected equipment can handle all-keys-lost on many of them, but coverage is still maturing. Some of these jobs remain dealer-only, and we will tell you so on the phone rather than send a van that cannot finish the job.

What affects the cost of a Lexus key in Irwindale?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the same word, 'Lexus', covers keys with very different technology inside. These are the factors that move the cost:

  • Key type. A bladed transponder key costs far less than a smart fob. Lost-fob replacement on 2020 and later server-authenticated systems runs well above an ordinary bladed key.
  • Add-a-key or all-keys-lost. Having one working key left is usually the more economical route, because the car can authorize the new key without special codes or emulator hardware.
  • Generation of the car. Server-authenticated platforms require extra equipment and access, and that work costs more.
  • Blade cutting. Laser-cut blades need a precise cutter, and a worn original can need a code-based cut instead of a copy.
  • Condition of the old key or ignition. A cracked shell or water-damaged board may only need a repair or a new shell instead of a full new fob.
  • Where and when. Mobile service to a lot at the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area at night is a different job from a daytime visit, and we explain the difference when you call.

Dealer or locksmith: which makes more sense for your Lexus?

Both are legitimate, and the right answer depends on the car. A dealer can be the right call for some of the newest Lexus models, where server-authenticated registration is still maturing and certain all-keys-lost jobs remain dealer-only. If your car is in that group, we will say so and not take your money for a job we cannot finish.

For most older Lexus models, a locksmith is the more practical choice. The car does not have to be towed anywhere, because we come to it. If it will not start with no key, getting it to a dealer usually means a tow before the key conversation even begins. For many 2000s and 2010s models, we can cut and program the key right where the car sits.

Ask both for the same thing: a key that opens the doors, starts the engine and works the remote functions. Then compare based on your situation, not only the sticker number.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987. We run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, CA 90024, plus mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you are reaching one company, not a call center that forwards your job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, called a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they touch your car, including us. If they hesitate, call someone else.

If you would rather write than call, use our contact page and include your Lexus model, year and what happened.

Lexus key help around Irwindale

We work across the whole city, in ZIP codes 91706 and 91702. In the small residential enclave near the Civic Center, around Arrow Highway and Irwindale Avenue, the need is usually a spare key for a Lexus parked at one of the modest single-family homes. Along the Arrow Highway and Irwindale Avenue corridors, it tends to be a work or errand vehicle with a dead fob or a worn blade. In the Live Oak Avenue industrial district, it is often a Lexus parked on a shift with a lost key.

The Santa Fe Dam area brings its own kind of call: a car parked at the recreation area, a fob that vanished somewhere along the way, and a driver who needs to get home. Other places people mention, such as Irwindale City Hall or the I-605/I-210 interchange, usually just tell us where to find the car.

Climate matters a little. Summers are hot in this inland valley, and heat is hard on fob batteries and plastic shells. Quarry operations add dust that works into exterior locks, and Santa Ana winds periodically rake the open San Gabriel River corridor. Dust can gum up a door cylinder, so the emergency blade in your fob may be stiffer than you expect.

Common Lexus key problems and what they usually mean

Many calls turn out to be smaller than the caller feared. Before assuming you need a new key, check these:

  • 'Key not detected' on a smart-key car with the hidden emergency blade still opening the door usually means a dead fob battery. That is a quick fix, not a replacement.
  • A key that sticks or stops turning on a high-mileage 2000s model often points to worn ignition lock wafers, not the key.
  • A laser-cut blade that no longer turns the locks may be worn or chipped even though the chip still works.
  • A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine was cut without a transponder.
  • Cracked shells, broken buttons and water-damaged boards are repairable in some cases. See our page on key fob replacement in Irwindale for what can and cannot be saved.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a new Lexus key if I lost the only one?

Often yes, but it depends on the model year. Many 2000s and 2013-and-later cars are workable. From about 2020, and especially on the newest platforms, all-keys-lost can require server-connected equipment, and some jobs are dealer-only. We confirm by VIN before we commit.

Will you come to the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area parking lots?

Yes. Mobile service means we come to the vehicle wherever it is parked in Irwindale. Tell us which lot and where in it, and we will find you.

My Lexus says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause, and the hidden emergency blade in the fob should still open the door. If a fresh battery does not help, the fob itself may be failing and we can test it.

Why will my hardware-store copy open the door but not start the car?

Most Lexus keys from the late 1990s on carry a transponder chip that the car must recognize. A plain copy has the right cut but no chip, so the doors open and the engine will not start.

How do I know which key type my Lexus has?

The era gives a rough guide, from 4C and 4D-68 chips to 8A smart keys and the newest B9 smart keys. Changeover years vary by model, so we confirm by VIN and in person.

Do I need to tow my Lexus to get a key made?

Usually not. We come to the car and program the key on site. The exception is a model where the job can only be done at the dealer, and we tell you that on the phone.

What do I need to show you before you make a key?

Photo ID and proof you own or are authorized to use the vehicle, such as registration that matches the car. We ask for this on every job.

Is it cheaper to go to the dealer?

Not reliably. Cost depends on key type, generation and whether any key is left, and a dealer visit can add a tow. Compare what each option includes for your specific car.
