What do Hyundai owners in Hermosa Beach usually need?

Hermosa Beach is under 1.5 square miles, and the whole city sits within a few blocks of the ocean. People live in small-lot beach cottages, rebuilt multi-story townhomes, duplexes, triplexes and small apartment buildings, and many of them rent. That shapes what a Hyundai key problem looks like here. A shared rental often means one set of keys for two drivers. A walk-street cottage means you may be locked out a short stroll from where the car is sitting. High turnover in units means keys change hands more than they would in a neighborhood of long-time owners.

The Hyundai key jobs we handle in a place like this tend to fall into a few groups:

  • A spare key for a second driver or a roommate, before the only key goes missing
  • All keys lost, with nothing to copy from
  • A car locked with the key inside, which is a separate job from replacing a key (see our page on Hermosa Beach car lockout service)
  • A smart fob that stopped working, usually a dead battery or a worn-out unit
  • A worn metal key that turns badly in the ignition or the door
  • An ignition that was damaged in a theft attempt and needs repair as well as a key

How does mobile Hyundai key service work at the curb?

You do not need to tow the car anywhere. Our vans carry the cutting and programming equipment, and we work where the car is parked: at the curb, in an alley, in a garage, or in a lot. Here is how a typical job goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the model, the year, the trim if you know it, whether the car starts with a turn key or a push button, and where it is parked.
  2. We work out what you actually have. Many Hyundais from 2011 through 2022 have no immobilizer at all, and many do. We check the ignition type, the build date, the fob part number and, where needed, the VIN.
  3. We ask you to show that the car is yours, then get into the car if it is locked, using methods that are not meant to damage the door or the paint.
  4. We cut the key by code or by hand. On a chip-equipped car we program it through the OBD-II port. On a base car with no immobilizer, a properly cut metal key is all it needs.
  5. We test everything before we leave: the door, the ignition or push-button start, the remote functions on a fob, and any other keys you still have.
  6. If something on this car is outside what our tools cover, we tell you that before we start and explain your options.

Does your Hyundai even have a chip? The key eras in plain terms

Hyundai's US key history is unusually split by trim level, so model year alone does not tell you what your key is. When a chip is present, the systems moved through roughly these stages:

  • Late 1990s and early 2000s: a Texas 4D-60 chip on some cars, such as the EF Sonata and the first Santa Fe
  • Through the 2000s and early 2010s: Philips ID46 chips
  • Mid to late 2010s: DST80 flip keys and Hitag-3 ID47 keys, with a Texas DST-AES chip (often listed as '8A') on some models
  • Newest generations: NXP Hitag-AES smart keys, arriving by model. Elantra smart keys start in 2021, Santa Fe in 2023, Sonata and Kona in 2024, Tucson in 2025

Why the same year can mean two different keys

Here is the part that surprises people. A very large share of 2011 to 2022 base turn-key trims shipped with no immobilizer at all. Hyundai's own anti-theft software-update list covers the Elantra 2011-2022, Sonata 2011-2019, Tucson 2011-2022, Santa Fe 2013-2022, Accent 2018-2022, Kona 2018-2022 and even the Palisade 2020-2021. On those cars, a plain metal key that is cut correctly starts the engine. Hyundai made immobilizers standard on vehicles produced after November 1, 2021, so anything built later carries a chip.

That is why a hardware-store copy works on one Hyundai and fails on another that looks identical. Trim and build date decide it, not the model year. The newest chips are also labeled inconsistently by parts sellers. Most are called '4A', but the 2021 and later Elantra shows a '4A' versus '6A' split. So we do not guess from a catalog listing. We confirm the chip by the fob part number and by looking at the car.

What about the theft-wave Hyundais and ignition damage?

The no-immobilizer trims are the same ones targeted in the 2021 to 2023 theft wave that people call the 'Kia Boys' trend. If your Hyundai was one of them, you may be dealing with a damaged ignition cylinder or steering column, not just a missing key. In that case a new key alone will not fix the problem, because the cylinder it goes into is the part that was hurt.

Hyundai also offers a free anti-theft software update for the models on its list. That update is done by Hyundai, not by us, and it is worth asking your dealer about. What we can do is repair or replace the ignition lock cylinder, cut a key that fits it, and make sure the car starts and locks the way it should. If your car has no immobilizer, we will tell you that plainly, so you understand your risk and your options.

What if I lost every Hyundai key?

All keys lost is stressful, but on most Hyundais it is a normal job. Immobilizer-equipped models program through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and on most 2006 to 2019 models the immobilizer PIN can be read or calculated by the tool. That means we can make a working key from nothing without involving the dealer. If your car is a base no-immobilizer trim, there is nothing to program. We cut a key to the lock and you are done.

The newest cars are where we are more careful. On the Hitag-AES '4A' generations, roughly 2023 and later depending on model, aftermarket programming over the OBD port is documented. One example is an all-keys-lost 2023 Santa Fe done with an Autel IM-series tool that reads the PIN directly. But coverage is still maturing. PIN-read support varies by tool and by model, and some jobs may need the Hyundai dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm coverage for your specific car before we promise anything, and we say so honestly if it points you to the dealer.

If the lost key was on a ring with your apartment or house keys, think about that too. Someone holding both can find where you live and what the key opens. Our page on lost car key replacement in Hermosa Beach covers that side of it.

What affects the cost of a Hyundai key in Hermosa Beach?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car in front of us. These are the things that move the cost up or down:

  • Whether the car has an immobilizer. A plain metal key on a no-immobilizer trim is usually the more economical route, while a chip key or smart fob needs programming
  • The key type: a basic metal key, a flip key, a smart fob with push-button start, or a proximity key
  • Whether you still have a working key. Adding a spare is usually simpler than all keys lost
  • Whether the PIN can be read on the tool for your model, or whether the job needs extra steps
  • Ignition or door lock damage that has to be repaired first
  • Where the car is, and whether we are coming outside normal hours. Night and weekend calls are part of the service, but they can affect the job
  • The quality of the fob. We would rather tell you when a cheap clone or aftermarket chip is likely to fail intermittently than sell you one that causes problems later

Dealer or locksmith for a Hyundai key: which makes sense?

Both are legitimate, and the right choice depends on the car. A Hyundai dealer is the better call when your car is among the newest generations where aftermarket tool coverage is still catching up, or when you want the free anti-theft software update done. Some jobs on those cars may require dealer or NASTF-credentialed service, and we will say so rather than start something we cannot finish.

A locksmith makes more sense when the car is on the road and you are not. On most 2006 to 2019 immobilizer models, and on any no-immobilizer base trim, we can do the job without a tow and without you arranging a ride to a service department. We come to the car, which saves you the trip and often the extra step of towing a car that otherwise runs fine. For a simple spare or a basic key, that is usually the easier path. For a car near the edge of tool coverage, a call to us first will tell you quickly which way to go. You can read more about Hyundai keys in general on our main Hyundai page.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and send mobile service vans out from there, serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Hermosa Beach is about 19 miles from our base, and we cover it as part of our normal area. When you call (213) 577-1366, it is answered around the clock by our own company, not a call center that passes your job to whoever is free. There are no dispatch middlemen between you and the technician.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters most on the difficult jobs, such as a newer Hyundai near the edge of tool coverage, where someone experienced has to decide whether to proceed.

One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before they start work. It is a fair question and we are glad when customers ask it.

Hyundai key service across Hermosa Beach

We serve all of 90254, from the Sand Section and Pier Plaza down to South Hermosa and up through North Hermosa, East Hermosa and Hermosa Valley. We also work along the Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation Boulevard corridors. If you are parked near the Hermosa Beach Pier, Clark Field, South Park or the Hermosa Beach Community Center and Theatre, we can meet you there.

The housing around here affects how car keys get lost or damaged. Walk-street and alley-access homes are typical near the beach, so a locked car and a locked front door can end up being the same bad evening. Duplexes and triplexes in the Sand Section turn over often, and when tenants move, keys do not always come back. Salt air is a real factor too. Exterior locks, hinges and gate hardware corrode here routinely, and marine-layer damp can swell doors and make deadbolts stick in older wood-frame cottages. That does not change how a Hyundai key is programmed, but it does mean a worn key, a stiff garage side-door lock or a corroded gate lock near the Hermosa Valley Greenbelt is easy to find, and we can look at those while we are there.

We also do lock and panic-hardware work for bars and restaurants around Pier Plaza, rekeying for rental turnover, and replacing corroded exterior locksets on beachfront units. If you need more than car keys, our Hermosa Beach locksmith page lists everything. For the full picture of car key service in the city, see car key replacement in Hermosa Beach, and if your fob is the problem, key fob replacement in Hermosa Beach covers it. Frequently asked questions

Can I just get a hardware-store copy of my Hyundai key?

Maybe, but it depends on the trim and build date. On a base no-immobilizer trim, a plain metal copy starts the car. On a chip-equipped trim, it opens the door but will not start the engine. We check which one you have before cutting anything.

My Hyundai is a 2011 to 2022 base model. Does it have a chip?

It might not. Many base turn-key trims in that range shipped with no immobilizer, including models on Hyundai's anti-theft software update list. Because it varies by model, trim and build date, we verify per vehicle rather than assume.

Do you come to my car in Hermosa Beach?

Yes. Our mobile vans work at the curb, in an alley, in a garage or in a lot anywhere in 90254. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and tell us where the car is.

Can you make a Hyundai key if I lost all of them?

On most 2006 to 2019 models, yes. The immobilizer PIN can usually be read or calculated by the tool. On the newest 2023 and later generations, coverage is still maturing, and some jobs may need the dealer or NASTF-credentialed service. We confirm before we start.

My smart fob says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not always. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the emergency blade inside the fob should still open the door. If the battery is fine and the car still does not see the fob, we can test it and tell you whether it needs replacing. Our key fob replacement page has more detail.

My Hyundai was targeted in a theft attempt. What should I do?

Check the ignition and steering column for damage. You may need an ignition lock repair as well as a key. Ask a Hyundai dealer about the free anti-theft software update for eligible models. We can handle the ignition repair and the key, and we will tell you if your car has no immobilizer.

How do I know the locksmith is legitimate?

Ask for their BSIS LCO license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a legitimate company will give it to you without hesitation. Also be wary of anyone who will not tell you their company name when they answer.

Is the dealer ever the better choice?

Yes. On the newest Hitag-AES generations, or when you want Hyundai's anti-theft software update, the dealer may be the right place. For most older models, and for base no-immobilizer trims, we can usually do it at the car without a tow. Call us and we will tell you honestly which way to go.
