What do Lexus owners in Hawthorne usually call us about?
Most Lexus calls from Hawthorne fall into two groups, and the age of the car usually tells you which one you're in. Owners of 2000s sedans and SUVs tend to have trouble with the metal key itself: a worn blade, a sticking ignition, or a copy that opens the doors but won't start the car. Owners of newer push-button-start Lexus models tend to have trouble with the fob: a dead battery, a cracked shell, a lost fob, or a board that got wet. The problems we see most often on these cars are:
Where it happens matters, too. Hawthorne is mostly postwar stucco tracts in neighborhoods like Hollyglen and Bodger Park, with dingbat-style apartment buildings along Hawthorne Boulevard and other commercial corridors, plus a newer gated townhome community, ThreeSixty at South Bay, on the west side. A Lexus can have a key problem in any of those places: at the curb outside a building on the Boulevard corridor, in a driveway on a tract street, or behind a townhome gate where we need to be let in. Others run into it at work, in the industrial district around Hawthorne Municipal Airport and SpaceX, where the car sits all day and the problem only shows up at the end of a shift.
If the immediate problem is simply that you're locked out, that's a different job from key replacement. Our Hawthorne car lockout service page covers it. This page is about getting a working Lexus key made and programmed.
- A dead smart-fob battery. The dash says 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door.
- A lost smart fob, which costs far more to replace than an ordinary bladed key, especially on 2020 and newer cars.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage 2000s models, so the key sticks or stops turning.
- A worn or chipped laser-cut blade that no longer turns the locks even though the chip inside still works.
- A hardware-store copy cut without a transponder, which opens the doors but will not start the engine.
- Cracked fob shells, broken buttons and water-damaged boards.
How does mobile Lexus key service work at the curb?
Our vans carry the cutting and programming equipment, so the work happens where the car is parked. Most Lexus key jobs do not require a trip to a shop, and you don't need to arrange a tow for a car that still has a working key or only needs a duplicate. Here is how a typical call goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366. It is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us the model, the year, whether the car has a push-button start, and what happened to the key.
- We talk through what we know about that model and year. If a job is one we confirm by VIN or in person, or one that may be dealer-only, we say so on the phone instead of letting you find out at the curb.
- A mobile van comes to the car, whether that is a street in Hollyglen, an apartment lot on Hawthorne Boulevard, a work parking area or a townhome community. Hawthorne is about 15 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- We confirm that you are the owner before any key is made. Expect to show ID and proof the car is yours.
- We cut the blade if the key has one, then program the key to the car, usually through the OBD-II port. We check that it unlocks the doors, turns the ignition or starts the car by push button, and that the remote functions respond.
- You get working keys at the curb, and we answer any questions about spare keys or fob care before we leave.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Which Lexus key do you have? The key eras in plain terms
Lexus follows Toyota's chip technology, but it adopted smart keys earlier than most brands. The type of key in your hand decides how the job is done and what it involves. Here is the progression in plain language. Exact changeover years vary by model, so we verify the year on your specific car.
If you can't tell which one you have, that's fine. Tell us the model and year, or send the VIN, and we will sort out the key type before anyone drives out.
- Late 1990s to roughly 2005: Texas 4C fixed-code transponder keys on laser-cut blades, first a longer blade style and then a shorter one.
- 2001 to 2009 models such as the LS430, GX470, ES330 and RX330 or RX350: the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip in a short high-security key.
- Roughly 2006 to 2010 and on: first-generation SmartAccess push-button-start systems, arriving model by model. The IS came in 2006, the ES and LS in 2007, and the RX and GX in 2010.
- 2010 to 2017 RX, GX and LS: a newer 'DST+' (DST80) smart fob.
- From 2013: 128-bit 8A (DST-AES) smart keys, in several fob families.
- The newest generation: server-authenticated 'B9' DST-AES smart keys on the 2022 and newer NX, the 2023 and newer RX and the new GX550.
What happens if you've lost every Lexus key?
Losing the only key is the hardest version of this problem, and it is also where Lexus models differ most from each other. We will tell you honestly where yours falls.
On most 2000s bladed Lexus models, the 4C and 4D-68 keys, an all-keys-lost situation is handled through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. Toyota's immobilizer and smart-key reset path covers models from 1998 through 2023, so older cars are usually the more straightforward case.
On first-generation smart-key cars, roughly 2006 to 2012, all-keys-lost historically meant resetting or replacing the smart ECU or going to the dealer. Current professional tools can usually reset the smart code through the OBD port, but we confirm coverage for your specific vehicle before promising anything.
On 2013 and newer 8A-era cars, adding a key when you still have one is fairly easy over OBD. All-keys-lost needs DST-AES emulator hardware. From about 2020, all-keys-lost in the US increasingly requires Toyota or Lexus server codes, which means locksmith-credentialed access or tool-specific authorization.
On the newest platforms, the 2022 and newer NX, 2023 and newer RX, 2024 and newer GX550 and the 2026 ES, key registration is server-authenticated. All-keys-lost is possible on many of these with specialist server-connected equipment, but coverage is still maturing, and some of these jobs remain dealer-only. If yours is one of them, we will tell you on the phone, not after a van has made the drive. Our lost car key replacement page explains the general process.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Lexus key in Hawthorne?
We don't quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost up or down, so a quote over the phone makes sense to you.
As a general rule, a plain bladed key for a 2000s Lexus is the more economical route, and a lost smart fob on a 2020 or newer car is at the far end. Replacing a damaged shell or fixing a button on a fob you still have is usually lighter in cost than replacing the whole fob. If you only need the shell, board or buttons repaired, our key fob replacement page is the place to look.
Ask for a total, including the visit, the key, cutting and programming, before the van rolls. A reputable company will give you that.
- Key type: a 4C or 4D-68 bladed key, an early smart fob, an 8A smart key or a server-authenticated key are very different products.
- Whether you have a working key: adding a spare when you still have one is simpler than starting from zero.
- All-keys-lost on newer cars: server-connected equipment and credentialed access add real cost and time.
- Model and year: the same model name can use different key systems depending on the year.
- Condition of the car's lock hardware: worn ignition wafers on a high-mileage 2000s car may need work in addition to the key.
- Time and place: a night call or a hard-to-reach spot, such as a gated lot, can change the job.
Dealer or locksmith for a Lexus key: what's fair to say?
Both are legitimate options, and the right choice depends on the car. The dealer has factory-direct access to Lexus systems. On the newest platforms, where all-keys-lost registration depends on server authentication and coverage is still maturing, that can mean the dealer is the only route for some jobs. We will say so if we're not able to do it.
For most other situations, a mobile locksmith is the more practical choice. A dealer visit usually means getting the car to the dealership, and with no working key that can mean arranging a tow. A mobile service brings the equipment to the car in Hawthorne, which saves you that step. For duplicates, older bladed keys, worn blades, 8A-era add-a-key jobs and many smart-fob replacements, we can usually handle the whole job at the curb.
If you aren't sure which way to go, call us and describe the car. We'd rather tell you honestly that your car needs the dealer than send a van that can't finish the job.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Lexus?
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including Hawthorne. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us directly, and the same company that answers the phone sends the van. There is no dispatch middleman passing your job to whoever is available. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work, including us. It takes ten seconds and tells you a lot about who is at your car.
For more on how we handle the brand, see our Lexus key service overview, or visit the Wilshire Lock & Key home page for everything else we do.
Lexus keys around Hawthorne: neighborhoods, ZIP 90250 and the places cars get stuck
Hawthorne is a single ZIP, 90250, and a compact city, but the settings are varied. In Hollyglen and Bodger Park, the postwar stucco tract homes mean most cars sit in a driveway or at the curb of a residential street. Moneta Gardens, Ramona and North Hawthorne have the same mix of homes and small apartment buildings, and the dingbat-style buildings along Hawthorne Boulevard put many cars on the street or in building lots close to commercial traffic. At ThreeSixty at South Bay, the gated townhomes mean we may need a gate code or someone to let the van in, so mention it on the call. Del Aire, adjacent to the city but unincorporated, is also in our service area.
The industrial district around Hawthorne Municipal Airport and SpaceX is a separate case. Cars parked there are usually parked for a work shift, so a lost or broken Lexus key often means the problem comes up away from home. If you work there, tell us which building or lot and we will plan the van around it. A park such as Eucalyptus Park or Jim Thorpe Park can also serve as a meeting point if you aren't able to wait at the car.
Hawthorne's marine-layer mornings are mild year-round, and the climate has only a modest effect on locks. Fob problems here are usually age, battery or water damage, not the weather. Our Hawthorne service area page lists everything else we do in the city, and the Hawthorne car key replacement page covers every make.

- The VIN, visible through the windshield at the driver's side corner, or on your registration or insurance card.
- Whether you have any working key left, and whether the problem is a lost key, a broken key or a fob that won't work.
- Your ID and proof that the car is yours.

Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a Lexus smart key if I've lost the only fob?
Often yes, but it depends on the year. On 2006 to 2012 smart-key cars we confirm coverage per vehicle, and on 2013 and newer cars it requires DST-AES equipment. On 2020 and newer cars it can require server codes or credentialed access. Some of the newest models remain dealer-only, and we tell you that on the phone.
My Lexus says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a very common cause, and the hidden emergency blade inside the fob will still open the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the car still doesn't recognize the fob, or the shell is cracked or has been wet, call us.
Will a hardware-store copy of my Lexus key start the car?
Usually not. A copy cut without a transponder chip can open the doors but will not start the engine. The chip has to be programmed to your car. If you already have a cut key that won't start the car, we can often program a chip into it or make a proper replacement.
Do you come to Hawthorne at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Hawthorne. We don't promise a specific arrival time on a web page because it depends on where the van is and what the job involves. We'll give you a realistic one on the call.
Can you make a key for an older Lexus like an LS430 or GX470?
Generally yes. Those models fall in the 2001 to 2009 range that used the Texas Crypto 4D-68 chip in a short high-security key. Most of these keys are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, including when every key is lost. We confirm by VIN or in person.
Is a new Lexus RX or NX harder to get a key for?
Yes, the newest ones can be. The 2022 and newer NX and 2023 and newer RX use server-authenticated key registration. All-keys-lost is possible on many of them with specialist equipment, but coverage is still maturing and some jobs remain dealer-only. If you still have a working key, adding a spare is simpler.
Do I have to bring my Lexus to you?
No. Our vans come to the car, wherever it is in Hawthorne. You can also visit our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, but for a car you can't start, or a fob you lost, mobile service saves you the trip and a possible tow.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, so ask for the license number before work starts, from us or anyone else. Also ask for a total quote for the visit, the key and the programming, and expect to be asked for proof of ownership of the car.
